RIM Offers Preview Of MediaSync For Mac! Posted in BlackBerry Apps on 19 Dec 2008 20:38 by Bla1ze |
It's been something RIM has been promising to bring to consumers forever now although I probably would have started with the launch of a BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac users first before I'd have even think about MediaSync. But that's just my opinion :-) Hot on the heels of their Windows update of MediaSync, RIM is now offering up a "Preview" of the application for all you Mac users out there. Be sure to check it and let us know what ya think in the comments. Was the wait for some Mac tools worth it or should RIM go back to the drawing board? Keep in mind this is a preview and not final product. [ Thanks Al! ]

Does anyone know if the final version will work with Missing Sync?
As a Mac owner, my thoughts are that syncing my Blackberry with iTunes falls very low on my wants for Mac tools. I'm already running a parallel program (VMware Fusion) just so I can upgrade my OS, and PocketMac for the rest!! Which I might add already has a syncing feature for any playlist I choose from my iTunes app. So RIM step up already and give us Mac users a proper DM please!!!
I am already syncing my Bold with a Windows Laptop and an IMac, but none of the tools let the songs that came from the ITunes Store be downloaded. All syncs, including this one, are limited to those songs in your library that came from other sources. FYI!
sigh....DM please! I don't use my phone for music. On a positive note, I do enjoy Apple users getting some attention from RIM.
If RIM is not yet releasing a sync product for the Mac, then they should not interfere with other existing sync products.
weird it does that.
one plus though...it actually creates a playlist on your device if your berry supports playlists. better than missing sync!
This software made me loose all usb connectivity and bluetooth. Ive just reinstalled Leopard, which has taken 2 hours. DO NOT INSTALL THIS SOFTWARE AS IT BREAKS LEOPARD.
*After installing the Preview Version of BlackBerry® Media Sync, other software previously used to synchronize data with your Mac®, such as PocketMac® for BlackBerry® devices or Missing Sync, will no longer be able to connect to your device and will not work until BlackBerry® Media Sync is uninstalled.*
Agree that I'd rather see a DM for Mac instead. This really doesn't do anything different than PocketMac.
Do we know if they are going to do a DM for mac?
Rumor has it there is one in the works...
Does this really not work with OS X 10.4 (Tiger)?
I don't know what you did NintendoLinky, but I have installed it on three leopard machines so far and it has worked flawlessly.
RIM.... Steppin it up nice.... working flawlessly so far, but i do agree i would've loved dm first, but hopefully it'll soon follow..
Er...
I have Pocket Mac running fine at the mo..
Will this do everything that PM does?
This isn't made very clear.. So its scary -
Is i just for MEDIA - or does this replace Pocket mac..
Sound like you could mess up a good thing..
I'm not into cramming my berry full of music. When I want music on the go, that's why I have an iPod. Gimme a Mac Desktop manager!!
Doesn't always recognize the connection. Had to uninstall/reinstall.
Also, it takes some time to catch up with changes to the playlist you create in iTunes.
This is certainly good news, and something RIM must do if they really want to go toe-to-toe with the iPhone.
Still, I would much, much, much rather have my calendar and contacts sync properly without me having to face east, hold up a feather, close one eye, stand on one foot, chant blackberryblackberryblackberry, reboot, burn incense, reboot, drink green tea through my ear, repair permissions, blink really fast, and use a PC to get it to work properly.
so sweet....only wish there was a way to just use your library instead of just playlists. oh well its nice though!
In reply to 4ster: I totally agree. If RIM really want to get into the consumer arena, they need to opt up the game and give and least some standard features to us via BIS. I wouldn't mind to pay a little bit more for BIS if I would get at least 2-way mail syncing and my calendar and contacts synced too.
Currently, the suppport for this does not exist. Only offline.
Regarding MediaSync: Nice attempt but it is really just a preview. I tried to sync my Bold with it and while it finds my 16 GB media card in it (unlike PocketMac) the sync itself gets complete screwed up. If you look into the folders, then you will suddenly find song files with with song names from Album A under Album B though the song itself is from A and the MP3 tags are kind of correct. Looks like someone writing MediaSync hasn't quite understood yet how Objective C works ;-)
I DO use my Storm as a media player and for some reason this product only allowed me to put 1/3 of the music that ITuneMyWalkman did. I'm glad it's just a preview and hope that most of their time is focused on a DM for Mac and not this product. I'll try this again after they attach it to the DM so I don't have to bounce around from computer to program to sync my phone. I won't give up hope!
I'd rather have a DM or even a solid backup/restore program (stand alone, whatever), but I'm imagining now that even if it was created it would only be compatible with Intel based Macs so it's useless to me either way. Preview requires 10.5+.
What a waste! The time, energy, and money used to develop this software should have been used on the development of the Desktop Manager for Macs. If I am not mistaken, I can add playlists to my Blackberry using Pocketmac, so why this?

I just installed the MediaSync for my Mac and it's ok. I was hoping that I would be able to transfer music I downloaded from iTunes to my phone but there is no way to do it unless I burn the song to a disk and then import it back. If anyone has a work around for this let me know.
Hi... you can use TuneClone... It's a windows program but that way I have freed my music from the DRM. And it works fine on the Bold now.
Not a very sharp program. I already had about 50 songs on my card, then 'synced' some playlists that had some of the same ones. This program put the new songs on the card, but put the duplicate ones AGAIN. Meanwhile, it did not load the playlist information. Sync is supposed to mean "synchronize", not merely copy and paste! I'll be tossing it out and returning to pocketmac.
I downloaded the software to my new Bold and after one day uninstalled. No syncing of address book and ical makes no sense to use the soft which is blocking missing sync or pocket mac. I do not recommend this new release unless it will become full solution (incl. not only iTunes music but also other data). The good thing is the graphics - looks like real mac soft, congratulation on this.
I agree with Bla1ze. The first thing RIM needs to work on is making Desktop Manager for Mac and maybe have it like windows where you can install Desktop Manager with the media sync.
I downloaded it, works great got all my tunes expect the one's i bought from Apple
Synchronise my life or listen to a little music? I know which one i'd prefer. Mac users who download this preview will be dissapointed when confronted with a warning stating that any previously installed synch software (MissingSync, Pocket Mac, etc) will no longer work after MediaSync is installed. Come on RIM, where's the Desktop Manager for Mac???
its just ok. for some reason not all the songs in the play list will transfer. Not a techie so I dont know why. Also once you install it, it would not let me run Missing Sync.
Hopefully the soft wear for mac will get alot better. there are a lot of us out their.
So a pretty much an unwanted disaster of a Mac debut by RIM.
OH well...
This is dumb. I can drag and drop the music to the flash card on my phone. How hard is that?
What I need is this: To be able to update the OS on my phone using a MAC.
PLEASE!!! thank you.
