RIM launches BlackBerry News Feeds beta

RIM has launched their BlackBerry News Feeds app today via the BlackBerry Beta Zone and BlackBerry App World Test Center. The app is an integrated RSS reader for BlackBerry that makes it easy to catch the news and share with contacts. Unlike other 3rd party RSS readers, BlackBerry News Feeds will be more integrated with the BlackBerry OS to create a better overall experience. The app will be rolling out to the Beta Zone and BlackBerry App World Test Center over the course of the day today, so if you don't see it now just check back later.

Hope this is beTter than viigo ...
ealvnv Dec 13, 2010 at 10:33 am
Wish they had put google reader integration on this one, other then that is nice
kangalex Dec 13, 2010 at 10:37 am
so this app doesnt work like google reader? or do u mean that it just doesnt sync well with googlereader?
ealvnv Dec 13, 2010 at 11:10 am
For now doesn't sync with Google reader
mscooley Dec 13, 2010 at 12:30 pm
This app would be totally useless if it doesn't import/sync with Google Reader.
victoriak68 Dec 13, 2010 at 1:31 pm
Google Reader is a RSS reader. There's no reason RIM would integrate it. You want the articles from Google Reader to show up in this reader then import the feeds. If you want a Google RSS Reader for your BlackBerry? There's an app for that as they say, price is $9.99.
OMFG! Take a moment and think people!
Shexo Dec 13, 2010 at 10:34 am
How is this any different to Social Feed?
GenTsoChicken Dec 13, 2010 at 1:45 pm
I have the same question.
nojok3 Dec 13, 2010 at 6:17 pm
Its not. At all.
gthoffman Dec 13, 2010 at 10:39 am
It isn't showing up online if I search App World through BlackBerry.com. Also, I agree with Shexo, anybody want to detail what is different, or is this basically the RSS part of Social Feeds for non-6 users?
Pilot Prop Dec 13, 2010 at 10:46 am
It isn't showing up for me...guess i'll check back later.
123berryaddicted Dec 13, 2010 at 12:12 pm
The search function didn't work for me, however - I went to the catagories, its in under "test center"... Found it there - good luck!
Ospot Dec 13, 2010 at 10:48 am
Ditto on the social feeds/news feeds comments. I just started getting use to the RSS feeds in the social feeds app and was assuming they would just enchance this app. Doesn't make sense to have 2 RIM apps serving up RSS feeds??? It will be interesting to see what becomes of these two apps.
AgentScribe Dec 13, 2010 at 10:53 am
I deleted Social Feeds off of my Torch. I use Google Apps' Reader to read my RSS feeds. I wouldn't mind looking at an RSS-only version of Social Feeds.
spcurtis81 Dec 13, 2010 at 12:17 pm
I agree. I'm gettin confused. I have the leak of OS6 on my 9700 and I can't work out whether they want me to use the social media apps or the social feeds. Are we going to lose those apps in replacement for social feeds or are we going to have them both. All very confusing.
I am glad they added an RSS option through social feeds but it is so lacking in substance I still use a reader on my iPod but this is limited to wifi zones. Will check out this new app and see if it has a bit more about it.
I personally loved viigo as I enjoyed sharing stuff with friends on FB and twitter but it missed the two way google reader sync.

Supported Countries...
Canada
United States
Boo Hiss from the UK!
I mean come on! How can it make a difference?????
ElSteve9 Dec 13, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Aw, nobody wants to support multiple languages while they're developing a beta. So right now, they're just shipping it to English speaking countries.
oh yes, I did!
CGSCOT Dec 15, 2010 at 11:02 am
I do hope you are joking with this comment ?
nurofenplus Dec 19, 2010 at 4:15 pm
You funny bugger ;)
mssca Dec 19, 2010 at 9:04 pm
Ya... British don't speak English... Last time I was there I don't what the hell they were speaking! LOL
theninjasquad Dec 13, 2010 at 10:52 am
Of course... a few days after I bought BeReader. But then again, I prefer Google Reader and I doubt RIMs solution provides that integration.
frashure Dec 13, 2010 at 10:55 am
I tried OS6 on my 9650 and hated it. Not only is OS6 made primarily for touch screen devices, but Viigo is one of my most used apps and the RSS reader in the social feeds app was absolutely terrible. I was highly disappointed that was the best RIM could do after buying out Viigo.
Let's hope this is something better, but I won't hold my breath.
pkcable Dec 13, 2010 at 11:06 am
Still nothing for me
ealvnv Dec 13, 2010 at 11:12 am
Clear App World cache to see if u get it peeps alt+RST
Ghostnyc Dec 13, 2010 at 11:18 am
Wasn't popping up in App world, cleared my caches (thanks ealvnv) and did a search...Blackberry News Feeds appeared, installed...testing now.
simonstark Dec 13, 2010 at 11:37 am
Can I download it from somewhere else? I live in one of those cuntries where dragons still fly around, so no appworld for me. Sucks.
KEEMZ116 Dec 13, 2010 at 11:48 am
What was the point of social feeds?
TheTechGuy Dec 13, 2010 at 11:50 am
This better live up to Viigo's standards. Viigo is my most used app and it has been torture living without it since I moved on over to OS6.
Why couldn't RIM just take Viigo... change the name... then update it to work on OS6. Viigo was a fully functioning program that was at the top of it's game. What a waste!!!!
Ospot Dec 13, 2010 at 12:05 pm
Finally installed it and remain confused. Not sure why they have this and the social feeds application. The only real difference is that you can mark and delete items (should have just updated social feeds to do this??). Nothing like having two RIM options for RSS feeds. Weird?
djghettoredneck Dec 13, 2010 at 1:24 pm
I agree. Why have 2? I'm going to delete it I guess. No use in having it when I can get the same with social feeds.
kennyiceberry Dec 13, 2010 at 1:16 pm
Typical RIM confusion and questionable implementation. Does RIM have a PR advisor? If so, do they listen to the advice?
WolfmanRobby Dec 13, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Interesting... it shows up in App World for me, but no download button.
Check the online App World site and it says it's not compatible with my device. Yet, lists the 9700 in the device list.
I'm on a 9700 with AT&T's latest 5.0.0.979 build! Go figure!
As for the comparison's to Viigo, if I understand correctly, RIM bought Viigo and THIS is their first release of it. Now, if they dumped Viigo's code and built their own, or if this is their updated Viigo code, I have no clue.
However, this will get me flamed but, I never liked Viigo. Not one bit. So, honestly, I'm hoping for something a lot nicer, cleaner and that does not feel like Google Reader (something else I can't stand.)
If not, I'll go back to reading my RSS in Outlook 2007's native RSS reader.
erikluyten Dec 13, 2010 at 3:06 pm
I'm having exactly the same problem.
- Appworld website says: This item is not supported for your device.
- BUT Torch 9800 is in the list of supported devices
but well, probably only US and Canada can download this one.. Too bad.
micutu Dec 13, 2010 at 1:43 pm
can you guys post a link for users that get the message: "sorry your country is not supported by appworld" ? I would be thankful
GenTsoChicken Dec 13, 2010 at 1:51 pm
I've been using Social Feed since I upgraded to OS6.The only downside is that I would rather not have BBM and FB, which is why U downloaded News Feeds but so far I haven't been able to manually add feeds that are not made available.
Does anyone know how to manually add a feed that is not on the menu?
jrorion5 Dec 13, 2010 at 2:23 pm
It has some Viigo code, I would guess. You can import all of your Viigo feeds.
motoroid7 Dec 13, 2010 at 2:40 pm
Anyone able to log in using their existing blackberry ID once they have the application downloaded?
simonstark Dec 14, 2010 at 9:28 am
Nope. Tried to log in 10 times, now my account is locked. #fail :/
diswiddlepiggy Dec 14, 2010 at 10:37 am
It won't even let me choose "I already have one."
daspollak Dec 13, 2010 at 3:04 pm
I have it up working like a champ. Works great easy to add feeds, and I just imported my Viigo feeds to speed up the process.
Witmen Dec 13, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Works great, only problem is no option to delete all read articles at once. I don't know why they didn't include this option. I have almost 200 feeds and easily get over 1,000 articles daily. So what am I suppose to do, Let them all pile up or go through and delete them one at a time?
I've heard they get saved to your memory card which is great, But still I'll never go back and re read old articles, so I'd much rather be able to just delete them all and be done with it. Seems like a really stupid thing to leave out. Especially since Viigo does it.
jrorion5 Dec 14, 2010 at 8:40 am
My memory is shrinking with the feeds - so mine appears not to be on the card but on internal memory.
PDM Dec 13, 2010 at 6:21 pm
OTA anyone? Any website hosting it?

it is extremely simple and light weight, but i won't be using it since it doesn't sync with Google Reader, why would i want so much redundancy...i don't.

Playing with this new Blackberry News Feed reader in its beta form, at first I thought it was about time RIM decided to make its own branded RSS reader especially since its been a while since RIM acquired Viigo but I was heavily disappointed once it was loaded and I started using it on my Blackberry Bold 9000 (I know a little out of date but its too hard to let go, sometimes almost literally). I feel that the UI is terrible for a small physical QWERTY, non-touchscreen, Blackberry. Scrolling up and down takes additional effort, most which is due to RIM adding new/all text under each article name. With Viigo a lot of information was presentable right when it was loaded making it easier to navigate and see what you wanted to see. I do admit that it does look quite snazzy. It also feels like it takes some time to open articles. I noticed that RIM has not yet added a way to limit how many articles may be present at a time but they will most likely get to it in time. An auto-update is present which makes it very much convenient for quick in-out use. I also liked how it integrates your Blackberry User ID like in the Blackberry App World.
Overall I am not impressed by this rss reader, mostly in turn to having used Viigo for so long. On a Blackberry 9800 Torch I understand the need for this reader to avoid using the touchpad. The space provided per rss per article seems like there is plenty of space regardless of how large your finger maybe, I was tempted to tap my screen when I first loaded it but Im still waiting for that touchscreen Bold to one day hit the market and will be patiently waiting with for it.

I still can't see any notificaitons upon new RSS feeds...what does that APP has the Social feeds in the OS 6...doesn't have.....I beleive there should be a sort of a statemnt that this APP is useful for OS 5 only..If somebody fint eh notifcations in the TORCH ..please elt me know
curlin31 Dec 14, 2010 at 11:09 am
I've seen some of you mention importing your rss feeds to this app from viigo. Is there a way to import all of them at once from viigo, or do you have to just take each rss url one by one and add it to this new app?
PROB1 Dec 14, 2010 at 10:23 pm
One of the things I enjoyed the most about 6.0 on my Bold 9650 was Social Feeds, but 6.0 was to buggy on my phone so I returned to 5.0.0.975. Social Feeds was nice because it would follow the news feeds, Twitter and Facebook. With 5.0 I missed being able to pick the news feeds I want to follow and get rid of the ones I don't. News Feeds is doing this very well so far. No issues adding my feeds including the local news and getting rid of the stock choices I don't care about. I can choose the refresh frequency, look at the headings , read if I want, return to the top and choose mark prior opened, next feed, and done. Back to work! Good Job RIM. Its not Social Feeds but it does fill the void on News Feeds for us 5.0 folks and it's FREE!

Downloaded it but it asks for BB ID I use the same as I use for Appworld and it says authentication failure. If I say need one I also get an error. Anyone know what's going on? Thanks.
