is that a guy?

LOL read that question and looked at the picture of Mike and thought "wow, thats kind of harsh". I get it now though.

Mike does the playbook multitask?

Best post thus far!

Posted by netposer Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I always forget what Ina/Ian is now...a girl or a guy. And I guess he/she moved up to the NYT from CNet.
And he/she is an arse for saying a BB doesn't do all that other smartphones can do? What can't it do? copy/paste? multi-task? play games? email? Web? photos and videos?
Where the heck was he/she when iOS lacked basic OS functions?

Posted by drjay868 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

It seemed like he/she went out of his/her way to knock the BB platform anytime he/she could. Granted, there are things that BB doesn't do as well as other platforms, but it just seemed a little excessive.

Posted by hodgsonb Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 530 days ago

It's not a matter of he/she, it's an "it" and it's disgusting. I hope she runs into a lion cage at a zoo.

Idiot.

I think the Playbook looks great but would like to see mike talk more about other things than multitasking.

the million dollar question is what are the other devices?????????????????

Posted by joshua.worth Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

Maybe he is refering to other tablets in other sizes. Or maybe even laptops. Being the top Tech Company in Canada now may have went to RIM's collective head. I'm excited to find out and I'm hoping for those Smartphones to shop up asap

Posted by Xecutioner88 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Mike the Dodger... Thats my new nickname for him.

I've never seen so many incoherent answers in my life! but its ok, i still want the PlayBook :D

Posted by bigtime2 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Especially when she asked him about the price. It sounded like it would be more expensive than iPad.

Posted by jwmax Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

It should be, it's better. It shouldn't be a ton more expensive than iPad but I don't see why it should be lower. A big market for RIM is business types and 5 or 6 hundred isn't a lot of money to them, especially if the product really delivers.

I think they are going to sell a ton of these to businesses.

Anybody know what file formats you can play on this for, well, anything? Video, Audio, etc? I know it obviously can handle word docs and pdf files (the two mentioned here) but how about MP4, MP3, WMV, etc...

Posted by Lil Blackk Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Woah, I'm utterly disgusted with the comments here. I'm an 18 year old male who just graduated high school, and I would assume you all are adults. How dare you make obscene and totally un-needed comments about someone being trans-gender. WHO CARES. You all bitch and complain about not having a sneak-peak at seeing the PlayBook tablet, and when a video get's posted 80% of you complain about the interviewer being trans-gender and or whatever they look like.
Yes, it's different seeing someone such as the interviewer, but really? What's up with all the rude comments. Grow up and act like adults. I'm 18, and I would hope you guys have more common sense and decency than I.
Really...Kevin and Blaze you guys should probably just disable comments for this particular video, seeing as the comments are hurtful and totally un-needed. Let's all keep CrackBerry a family oriented site.

Posted by JasonM. Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Keep it a family oriented site when your 4th word is the biggest curse you can deliver? Like them or not, the comments weren't as undesirable as dropping the F bomb in a rant of maturity.

Kevin and Bla1ze should listen to you, people shouldn't be allowed to curse in the comments. You've illustrated that.

Posted by Lil Blackk Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I dropped the F bomb..The swear-filter's should have picked it up. Regardless, the nature of YOUR comments as well as a few others were far worse. You think by making fun of the way someone looks/lives there life is okay? Yet I use a four-letter word that's allowed on TELEVISION and I'm the bad guy? You truly are misguided on that one, kiddo.

You're an adult who really comes off as a bigot. Like I said, grow up.

Posted by JasonM. Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Whatever dude, I'm 14 I didn't know any better. Sorry to have offended you, and I'm sure the trans-gender community is glad to have you as their spokesperson.

Posted by Lil Blackk Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

14? Pa, right. You have a ton of maturing to do. Better go get started on your homework. >_<

And transgenders community..I'm straight, not gay or bi. I just have the common decency to not call people names and ridicule them for an alternative lifestyle.

Once again, grow up, you're acting like a 12 year old.

Posted by jwmax Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

I agree with you kid. It' the annonymity that makes people write things they would never say in public. But that's the nature of the web.

They had their say and you called them on it, that's the best we can hope for.

Posted by Alex338 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Way to shoot yourself in the foot by using the f word while trying to seem mature on a "family oriented" website.

That said, after reading the comments I agree that they should be disabled.

Posted by Lil Blackk Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

The comments SHOULD be disabled. Yes, using the f-word probably wasn't the best use of words, however it's nothing that isn't seen on television. The comments above are despicable regardless of me using the f-word. Are we 12 year old's, or are we adults?

Thank you.

PS: "Seem mature" -- I've proven that clearly I AM more mature than a portion of the commenter's in here. When is it ever okay for an adult to make fun of someones lifestyle? NEVER. Therefore being 18 and recognizing that what was said is wrong, yeah, I am mature. I don't need to "seem" like anything, thank you very much.

Posted by bigtime2 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Why should comments be disabled? So no once could voice opinions?

Posted by reeneebob Sunday, Dec 12, 2010 529 days ago

You call saying someone is disgusting and should run into a lion cage at the zoo an opinion?

It's not opinion. It's uneducated hate speech. And it's the disgusting thing.

I don't know what i am looking at and so do others who watched this video. Why do we need to grow up for being honest about that?

Perhaps you need your mother to wash your mouth out with soap? 18 or not... "Family oriented" site ??? Not with the type of language you choose to use. Just keep in mind kid, when you go pointing your finger at others, you've got three pointing right back atchya ;)

I don't know why people feel Mike was avoiding questions. I think the interview was fine, and alas, we still got a sneak preview of the PlayBook.
Can't wait to buy the 32gb when they launch!

Posted by JasonM. Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Listen man, I know my post was deleted because I used the unaccepted vernacular "tranny" to refer to the interviewer... I never insulted or made fun of him/her or his/her decision to change sex. To be honest if it makes him/her happy I could care less. You've drawn this out enough and it needs to end. If you truly reflect the 18 year old demograph I feel sorry for the rest of us; we have someone willing to curse like a sailor and stand up for something he knows nothing about because its PC to accept everything.

Posted by joshua.worth Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

We all have the right to say whatever we would like as far as I'm concerned and know. Let's keep it uncensored here. I live in the U.S.A. And if I don't like someones life style I have the right to say that in the U.S.A. If I believe it to be a sinful lifestyle I also have thr right to point that out. To me I hope that Guy in the Video turns from his ways repents and God saves him from his sins and where he is headed if he doesn't repent. I don't hate that guy this isn't bigotry (by the way I couldn't care any less about grammar or if the word before the parenthesis is spelled correctly) I do hate that type of lifestyle it is totally disgusting. That's my right to express that. Its also part of my belief system that thah is a sinful lifestyle. (In the U.S.A. We have freedom of religon as well) ////* So anyway I'm pretty stoked to hear that there are a couple "Smartphones" with QNX and multi core processors in the works in Waterloo. I had a feeling they wernt going to sell the Playbook for less than full retail of the current generation of smartphones. Let's hope Mike doesn't get his way pertaining to this. I want to see it for $399 but I'm thinking the cheapest one will be at least $699. Lets all hope I'm wrong us poor folk anyway. I can't believe they allowed to say that type of stuff on TV nowdays good thing I don't watch it.

Posted by 123berryaddicted Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

In every regard - well put. Long live freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Oh uh... Also.. Don't worry about spelling and grammar... If you really want, from your BlackBerry, hit  and then select "check spelling" works great!!! - sent from my Bold 9700 on the Telus Network. ;)

Posted by zrfdude Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

You need to repent. How many people have you drove to suicide with your bigotry (which is EXACTLY what this is).

All men are sinners, but you're holier than everyone else?

Posted by josh05 Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

When did he ever say that he was holier than anyone? You're getting defensive because what he says applies to you too. All he said is I hope this guy repents and gets saved, so how is that being annoyingly self-righteous? Do you even listen to people before you attack them?

Posted by joshua.worth Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

I said I hope this guy repents and is saved. I had to repent and be saved as well nothing holier. Oh and if anyone acts holier they would be wrong since All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Including me)

Posted by joshua.worth Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

To be even clearer than my previous comment All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (All includes me).

Posted by MarketRide Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

God is a view point you choose to believe in, that doesn't mean that others have to follow the same belief. You choose to believe the interviewer is a sinner based on rules YOU follow. But those are your rules and others that don't agree shouldn't be bound by your rules.

Posted by joshua.worth Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

But everyones Creator whose views are being expressed. Regardless I still at this point in the U.S.A. Have the right to speak those views. If all other views are wrong and people do actually die and go to hell (which I assure you is factual) then people don't have to accept them but they will not be happy with that choice once the die on this earth and live forever burining in the flames of hell./// Just saying

Posted by Zanshin- Sunday, Dec 12, 2010 529 days ago

There is nothing factual about hell. I don't care what people believe in as long as it isn't harmful to other people. - But saying that there are facts supporting that hell exists is completely false. There is no physical proof or evidence that heaven or hell exists.

You're free to believe in whatever you want, but when you lie, it doesn't give integrity to any of your statements.

Posted by joshua.worth Sunday, Dec 12, 2010 529 days ago

Even if I can't prove if somethings a fact its still a fact this isnt a court case I'm not proving anything I will call things fact that I know to be facts because they are facts.

Posted by Zanshin- Monday, Dec 13, 2010 529 days ago

You don't make any logical sense. I'd like to see these "facts"...

Posted by reeneebob Sunday, Dec 12, 2010 529 days ago

Yup. Do as I say as long as it suits my agenda. Check. Then hide behind a book.

You can wrap hate in a religious blanket all you want, it's still hate.

And your hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Posted by ALCie Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

People need to be more like this. Making comments about the interviewer's and saying "Is that a GUY LOL!!" is NOT appropriate. These comments should have moderation. Off topic comments, especially insulting ones, should not be posted.

You're much too sensitive. ;)

I would like to know if the PlayBook can browse the web if connected to a BlackBerry device. I also would like to know if BBM is one of the apps that can be used on the PlayBook when connected to a BlackBerry.

Posted by Lil Blackk Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Yes connected to your device or wifi you will be able to browse the web. Yes BBM will be on the PlayBook.

Your BlackBerry device will be able to connect with the PlayBook, and sync I believe.

Posted by JasonM. Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Do you need a tethering plan to support this?

Posted by Lil Blackk Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I doubt it. Couldn't you use your phones internet and use tether berry or the likes?

Posted by shupor Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

you might. I am aware of a few carriers that do not let you tether your phone as a modem.

the tether for blackberry app might let you do this though

Posted by jacmeister68 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

We should be looking and talking about the playbook rather than get off topic with these sick side issues. What's happening to CB man

Immature people. Agreed.

Posted by ReccaKun Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

its a free country, if you don't like what other people have to say you have the option of ignoring it. by responding or getting mad about their comments is just what they want. anyways the video was ok, it didn't answer much from what was previously known. I would like to have some demo on how a bb device can sync with the playbook and how it would look like. as for OS6, I'm happy with my OS6 as it is a big improvement over OS5.

Posted by Working Class Hero Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Are we talking about the playbook or a transgender reporter? Grow up everyone.

NOW, BACK TO THE SUBJECT...

I agree with one of the above posts where they said they were going to call Mike by his new nickname, "dodger". This guy couldn't be more vague when it comes to questions regarding the future of BB and QNX. He should have been a politician.

The biggest thing that has always bothered me about BB is being "leap frogged" in the technological aspect. EVERYONE else is running 1Ghz with AMOLED and SAMOLED screens and are near the capabilities of BB's "push". Obviously QNX and multicore CPU's are the wave of the future and Mike said BB will comply. My concern is the pace RIM competes at. It seems like RIM is always playing catch-up to everyone else. It seems this is the same with the playbook. Look at all the tablets that are now coming out running android and the mulitcore tablets are due out sometime next month and into the FY 2011. WHERE ARE YOU RIM?? I'm betting by the time the playbook is released it will be on par with some of the tablets on the market, however, STILL LAGGING BEHIND THE GAME.

By the time RIM comes out with a smartphone running a multicore CPU running QNX with 4G it will be 2014! Oh, but that will be ok because the rest of the world will be just turning on their 4G by then. BAH! Screw them! It's about what's going on HERE, RIGHT NOW!

Posted by corymcnutt Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Couldn't agree more...an artful dodger. I am really depressed about the future of BB Phones after listening to him avoid the issue of when these features would show up on a phone. He also has the nerve to believe that if RIM is growing in foreign countries where BBs look like a transporter; so in other words, as long as we can keep selling these 2001 phones to 2G countries, there's no reason for us to update in the US. I was also concerned about his attitude toward the pricing structure; Apple products are all overpriced, the Playbook is smaller than the iPad, yet he refused to say it would cost less, since it is smaller, even after he was asked more than once...then he laughed and is actually convinced it is a more advanced product, therefore, should cost more...does he not realize that Apple is coming out with it's next genberation iPad?? I LOVE BB products and I love my Storm2, but this guy is living in a fancy world and he is one of the main players for RIM!

Posted by HotJava Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

You cannot expect Mike to answer the questions any differently than he did. The answer regarding the Playbook's pricing is pretty much what can be expected at this time. The fact that there is a Playbook roadshow speaks to the fact that RIM needs to promote the product and get feedback. I'm certain that there is an estimated price but you better believe that if RIM believes they can get more for the product that they are likely to tweat the price. When he spoke about the Playbook being more powerful that the IPAD he was simply pointing out that the PBook does have to be cheaper because it is smaller. We all know that it will come in priced under the IPAD and not just because of the IPAD but because there will be many more tablets on the market and thus more consumer choice. I expect the IPAD2 to be cheaper as well when launched. There is no way in the world RIM would mess up by pricing the PBk higher then having to reduce it when the IPAD2 comes out in April.

Posted by WillieLee Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

You should try to be a little more hysterical. And would you care to name all these other CEOs that divulge their product roadmaps? Steve Jobs has denied the existence of products that he launched a month later.

As far as your idea that RIM is being passed by, the other manufacturers do not have a microkernal OS. RIM will remain ahead of the competition when it comes to flexibility and scalability.

And who has a push ability close to RIM? The most the others can manage is a push notifications which just wake up the device to make it poll the server. RIM has an "always on" connection to transfer data and also allow developers to push 8kb of data at a time. That's a major difference.

Posted by Kennedy.L Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

is this post for the questions lingering about the interviewer or playbook?? come on lets get our priorities straight.

Posted by sf49ers Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Lazaridis is an honest guy, but he can't admit that publicly, so he ends up saying things like "What the PlayBook allows us to do is jump into the next stage of mobile," and "we focused on our strategy for the next decade. It's a multi-core strategy."

So let me translate Lazaridis's speech into English:

"The PlayBook is awesome, and we're really jazzed about it. But we've positioned the QNX platform to be our OS for the next decade, just like the existing BlackBerry OS has lasted us about 10 years. The hardware to get the new OS into smartphones with the battery life we want just isn't there yet. It'll probably come next year as everyone goes dual-core.

So until then we're going to sell OS 6, which is great for messaging, great with slow networks, and has really low power consumption. In fact, even after we start transitioning to QNX.

There. He didn't say that in so many words, but I'm pretty sure that's what he really wanted to get across.

Here's the difference, though. Microsoft is rolling in dough by rolling out WP7 and replacing it's old OS, so the company could afford a year's worth of essentially zero sales while they made the transition. RIM can't. RIM has to keep selling BlackBerries. And to keep selling BlackBerries, Lazaridis has to keep pretending OS 6 is awesome(indeed it is) and forward-looking. Thus the incoherence.

Posted by BBThemes Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

pretty much nail on the head there, im sure he`d love to come out and say `we have this, this, this and this coming out next year` but no company will ever do that, basically when dualcore cpu`s come for mobile then BB will have some sweet as phones, but iv gotta be honest the torch is fine for me, the OS isnt as resource heavy as say an android phone, so maybe less power and such is needed to run it? people who just look at a spec sheet rather than a hands on wont get that (most reviewers) but people who try all products will.

Posted by HotJava Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Well said.

Posted by Kennedy.L Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I think Mike wants to punch the interviewer at times - because of his questions and saying "people are becoming increasing less happy with the current generation of blackberry's" and "blackberry's just dont do the things people want smartphones to do" lol
I don't think the interviewer is a BB fan at all.

I knew I should have done this interview.

Posted by corymcnutt Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I wanted to punch Mike for side-stepping the questions. The interviewer was asking the questions we should all want to know and Mike was so excited about selling BBs to 3rd world countries and gushing that the PB is going to cost more than the iPad because, even though it's smaller, it is more advanced and therefore worth more! No wonder RIM is behind in their development! I am very sad about my next smartphone purchase because I won't wait until 3rd or 4th Q2011 for them to finally come out with a QNX LTE phone.

Posted by fass Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I'd like to believe that Mike is avoiding certain questions so that information is gradually leaked closer to ship date. Regardless, this is a classy piece of equipment that could make all the other tablets look a little childish. It just says "business". I sit thru more and more presentations where middle aged men are using ipads and I keep expecting them to start spontaneously playing Angry Birds in the middle of them.

Posted by Lil Blackk Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

What you said makes a lot of sense. I'm sure they aren't just trying to give away all the goodies until we get closer to the release date.

: thumbs up :

Posted by 1canuck2 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I love the look of the PlayBook, but I have to admit, Lazaridis comes across as shady sometimes. He does a poorer job of selling his new flagship product than the British guy from the Roger's event did. He seems evasive, he seems like he wants to punch interviewers who ask tough questions, and he does what is a fabulous product a disservice by not answering questions straight up and coherently. It ends up leaving people with the feeling like he's hiding something.

The new game in all these recent slew of interviews seems to be say something insulting about Torch or RIM or BB6 in the form of a question and watch Mike not even address the question and bring up multi-tasking and next generation of mobile device...

Thankfully the product seems to sell itself - despite Mike best efforts :) - so I still want one!

Posted by Dodger52 Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I'm Sure MR lazaridis is'nt given anwsers about any dates concerning multi-core phones due to strategical-tactical concerns, trust me they have been and are working hard at making, new up to date phones.

Me being a Torch onwer i dont like to say this but i think the Torch is just a stopgap solution, to bridge the time to QNX-smartphones. Don't get me wrong the torch is'nt that bad it runs on a Armv7 Cortex-A8 compliant CPU wich is fairly up to date but it lacks a dedicated GPU and doesn't run on 1Ghz as most competitors do.

What carrier is going to get the Playbook first, when and how much?

Posted by fass Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

I assumed that it wasn't going to a carrier since one isn't needed. I would hope that it would be sold at retailers like Best Buy.

This is why I think the PlayBook will be pretty expensive. No carrier contract, so no equipment discount. Your top of the line smartphones retail for $500 - $600 but you can get them for $99 or less with a carrier contract. Can't imagine how much this tablet will cost with no carrier discount.

In regard to BBOS I'm still struggling to find things my torch doesn't do thing that android or iphone do. yeah android and iphone can be snappier but my torch still does everything those do.

Also, can just one interviewer just flat out ask Mike L how the pairing between the playbook and a BB is going to work and stick with the question until you get an answer. Do we need a separate app or is it going to tether or what. This is my single biggest wonder about this whole thing.

And just cause:
Hey Lil Blackkk you better go buy a helmet cause life is going to be a bumpy ride if you get that upset over some comments about how someone looks. And she did look like Pat from those old SNL skits. Some should of told her to update her look from 1994

You are in corp america, I doubt that very much kid. My best guess is you are zit faced 15 year old. I mean look at your screen name.

You posts a generally pathetic and don't come anywhere close to intelligent.

Camera work - Horrendous (learn how to expose properly and turn off the auto-iris. While you're at it, learn how to FOCUS and shoot the subject who's actually talking).
Editing - Bush league (I could cut a video of a turd falling out of my ass that would be better than this video any day).
Interviewer - Don't quit your day job (this has nothing to do with the transgender issue and everything to do with a boring interview).

Sorry to get righteous, but unless you can make an interview clip even remotely close to something bearable, than I can't bring myself to pay attention to the subject without stopping myself from involuntary vomiting all over my own cockhole.

Posted by fass Friday, Dec 10, 2010 531 days ago

Although your comments do offer a wealth of graphic imagery, (vomit, turds), they really don't bring much to the table regarding the playbook.

Posted by Zanshin- Sunday, Dec 12, 2010 529 days ago

Agreed, I apologize. I made that comment long before this thread went way off topic with the whole transgender thing and I didn't intend to deviate it any more.

lol @ Mike trying to avoid the Android comment

A little bit more power than the IPAD, as he looks down like a child who has just been asked who broke the vase lol

I like this guy/girl(s) non bias variety of questions

His evasiveness in this interview is rather disappointing. He needs to step and start answering the big questions. This makes me not want to continue supporting BlackBerry. Idk i have a sour taste in my mouth because there aren't any BlackBerrys out there worth upgrading from my 9000. So sad... I was a loyalist! Even a 9000 with a trackpad would satisfy me now. Dont' expect too much from RIM, they end up shattering all your dreams. ahahha

Get some other marketer who can talk more than about how great University of Waterloo is. Only reason your number 1 in Canada now is because Nortel Imploded. Marketing of products is atrocious and this and the other CEO's double talk is the reason.

I don't know if u all have been paying attention, but all of these PlayBooks have been early models. I would Luv to see one of these bad boys with the newly required TAT also running on there......

Does no one remember the executive from Palm last year who made wild statements about how the Palm Pre was going to sell ten million devices and how everyone would throw away their iPhone? Those weren't harmless bragging statements as Palm had to scramble to issue press releases clarifying that they weren't actual expectations of Palm.

There's more at stake here than just your childish needs to have answers. Companies have to follow rules, especially when they're in a quiet period before earnings.

Bring on the Storm 3 with dual-core processor and QNX OS! (or am I just wishfull thinking?)
Maybe a Torch 2 with dual-core and QNX? end of 2011?

What a poor poor interview, they couldn't even take ML somewhere quiet for god sake, lighting terrible, very off the point questions. With blackberry there will always be people that want Rim to bring something new and even more people that like it the way it is. Mike's 2G point is very good, in UK for example there's very little 3G, only in cities, anywhere else you're back to gprs or edge. 3G is getting busy now thanks to android and iphones hogging bandwidth. I've been getting failed calls and congestion messages on my bold quite often lately when I try to make a call and when that happens I switch back to 2G. Tell you what, if blackberrys would use just as much data as them there would probably be no bandwidth left.

Sorry I'm very happy with my Blackberry but in my opinion Mike Lazaridis shouldn't give interviews anymore. Every time I see him answer some very interesting questions about the future he lets RIM seem like they don't know actually in which direction they should go. And who's going to invest into a company that doesn't know where to go...
Also his Playbook arguments are just: Multitasking and Flash. They need someone who really presents the Playbook and shows that it really fits into business and entertainment.

Too much teasing, just give me a pre-order and the date I'll be receiving it.

I don't think mike like that tranny Ina that much lol

Sounds like Mike made it pretty clear that the Playbook will be more expensive than the ipad because he didn't correct the interviewer. Oh well, i would still love to get one of these.

Posted by DrewDT Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 531 days ago

By virtue of Mike's avoidance/redirection of the question posed multiple times on when we should expect to see QNX on BB smartphones, I wouldn't hold my breath on it. Maybe 2012??

I think a majority of people commenting here really need to take a step back, re-evaluate their lives, and move on.

Has it occurred to anyone that, perhaps, RIM isn't trying to build hype like their competitors do? Perhaps RIM is only making promises that they'll be able to keep? Maybe, just maybe, they're being realistic in what they can offer with their products.

Unless you've invested in RIM's stock, then there really isn't a point in getting yourselves all worked up about all of this. Time and again, those of you who "can't wait for RIM for release a good product", just go. You guys make it so difficult to come on this forum and enjoy the potential RIM has, regardless of when they come out.

Sheesh. I'm scared to think of what would happen if the technological age suddenly died and we all had to revert to paper and pencils.

What the Hell...this stopped being about the BB playbook and more about transgenders and stupid concepts like god....
I didn't even notice the interviewer till I saw the posts about his gender and then to top it all off we have a religious discourse about what is acceptable....
Jokes about indeterminate gender aside, what was more offensive was the stupid assertion of God existing and Hell being real.....one step away from f***kin Osama....
Forget god..he is upto his own stupid devices...I just want to know when Mike and Co. are bringing the playbook out...enough waiting already....

I agree, it's ridiculous how off-topic these comments stray sometimes.

And has it ever occurred to anyone that maybe JUST MAYBE Mike is trying to not spill the beans on any future product releases? Kinda how like Apple does?

Posted by darkmanx2g Saturday, Dec 11, 2010 530 days ago

Ummm Mike, Blackberry didn't "flawlessly" multitask/switch apps from day 1. As I remember my blackberry froze by switching apps and had to reboot caused by the low memory and poor processor. LOL. I don't even have to mention the quality of apps. Face Palm.

I think RIM has it backwards. I can afford to have a notebook, a tablet, and a smartphone, but what a ridiculous redundancy, in function and cost; and frankly it is too much to carry around. Do I really need internet connectivity via 3 or 4G on two or three devices? I wonder if RIM isn't missing the boat--the next iteration: a tablet that is also a phone. The Dell Streak is sort of one, but it runs Android and the size really is too big for a phone and too small for a tablet. What if a Playbook could make calls via bluetooth and trhe playbook had a robust bluetooth headset and bluetooth keyboard option? Maybe there is a small market for that, I don't know; maybe a big one. But when I heard RIM's chief talking about third world countries and WiFi, it struck me that RIM may be positioning itself for third world adoption, but its bread and butter is the first world and it needs to be looking ahead. Kevin M is always talking about how RIM's older devices are perfect smartphone intros for first and third world, and he is right. But this is a new product. Whether you buy my huge bluetooth headset idea or not, it should have cellular capability from the get go. Otherwise it is really going to be a non-starter. The quality time I spent in WiFi environments is with a computer.

The only counterpoint is what RIM has settled on: use your phone to get the Playbook online when you are away from WiFi. That's a great idea, assuming your phone is capable of becoming a hotspot and has a huge battery. I suspect that RIM plans to sell a bunch of new phones with that capability. However, unless cellular providers get on board and end their stupid tethering surcharges and data tiers, I don't see alot of people doing that. It is too complicated. It requires manipulation of the phone, making and maintaining the connection, etc., and the afore-mentioned tethering plan. Seems like alot of trouble, especially for the quickie online experience you'd expect to have with a tablet (given the limitations of its operating system, input methods, and screen size).

So, who is this for? Someone who spends alot of time in WiFi environments--travelers, businesspersons, students--who doesn't need the power of a notebook computer, but need to check their email and read a magazine, but their phones aren't good enough of large enough. Are these people walking around large business campuses? Schools? in buses and trains? Really, checking your email (not from your phone), looking at pictures, playing games, and watching movies do not strike me as core business pursuits, and the price of the Playbook is rumored to be about the same as a decent notebook computer.

I just don't get it.

No need to get it. Motorola is about to drop their version on a proven platform with a real app market place. That pretty much pounded the last nail in the Playbook's cauffin. Same ol' RIM. Same ol' song and dance. What isn't vapor-ware drops a day late and a many dollars long over target. On the plus side, not long after they drop it, you'll be able to find it on the clearence shelves with the rest of the dead tech. Gee, ya think they could'a got into this market when it was competitive? Nah, that's crazy talk.

You're both wrong. The corporate world is waiting in extreme anticipation for this device, and they will buy it by the millions - mark my words. Every business person I know has expressed to me that they have been waiting and longing for something like this... And, just like the BlackBerry smartphone, corporate will spill over into the consumer world, RIM will do well with its tablet(s).

Well, at least he was truthful when he said BlackBerries were perfect for much of the World that is still on 2G networks! He may well have just said "yeah, we're behind in the rest of the World!" So, Mike, when do those of us in more advanced lands get to see advanced BlackBerrys?

Does anyone else think RIM needs to send someone else out to do interviews and such?
