One of the first things I do when purchasing a new BlackBerry smartphone is pick up a case. So it's no surprise that over the years I've accumulated quite a few. Some I've used, some are dented, and others have not been up to the task of having me as an owner. As Barney Stinson would say, my klutziness is, wait for it, LEGENDARY. People actually take bets on when the next drop will be. Now I own the Seidio ACTIVE case and holster for both my Torch 9800 and Bold 9900 but they have a tendency to lock up your device or be slippery in the hands. That's why after a little bit of searching through the CrackBerry Store I decided to check out the Case-Mate Tough Case and see if could withstand the rigors of daily use. What's the final verdict you may ask? Click on the jump to find out.
The Review
The Case-Mate Tough case is comprised of two layers to help protect your device from the sudden drops, falls or any other kind of impact including falling from a desk to the floor. The outer layer is a polycarbonate hard shell while the inner layer is made of soft dual layers of silicone to guarantee your device is snug and fully protected while still granting access to all the ports.

What had me sold was the textured back. It's the first thing I noticed when taking it out of the box. It offers a firm non-slip grip, feels amazing in your hands, and is extremely sturdy. There's also no chance of fingerprint residue or smudges dirtying up the back and it stays put when placed on a flat surface. Unlike the exterior shell of the Seidio which is thin but effective, I'd much rather go with the stronger material in this one. The cutouts in the back are just the right size and do not interfere with the flash or when taking a picture or video.

The left side lets you access the charging port and the headphone jack with cutouts that do not prohibit you from plugging in your chargers or wired headsets.

The right side covers the volume buttons and convenience key but doesn't take away from how they operate or their response to your touch.

Both the top and bottom are fully protected by the silicone layers. While this gives additional protection for all the corners it ensures you won't be able to fit it into the BlackBerry Charging pod without removing.
After all of my numerous drops and bangs, falls to the carpet, being placed in different jacket pockets, and going up and back from my bag, it withstood all that I threw at it. Plus, I rarely found it to collect dust and dirt so that the eye-popping blue stayed clean and shiny the entire time. It's available in three colors (outer shell remains black): black/pink, black/black, and my personal favorite, black/blue. One of my co-workers saw it on my desk and picked it up immediately (I know how could I let her) and she too fell in love with the color and how light it was.

Leaving the front view up to our imagination? ;)

Didn't mean to :) All fixed.

I loved the Case-Mate and didn't have any trouble with it for about the first two months. Since then, it has caused my phone to freeze, it won't allow my phone to charge, may continually push the right side key, and/or won't allow the side keys to work. I go back to it once or twice a month with the same results.

I'm sorry you're having that issue. On the sides of your device does the silicon gel buttons match up exactly with the outer skin? Or do you see it pulling or off in any way?

I've alternated putting on the outter shell first beginning with the left and then the right side. By the time I have fiddle farted around with it, l have to do a battery pull, and I'm frustrated. I love how the case feels in my hands and it gives it just enough extra bulk. I just don't understand why I didn't have problems all along.

So why can't I get it in green like in the first picture?
Alicia Erlich Mar 31, 2012 at 5:07 pm
It's actually blue, must be the lighting in my apartment.
Barefoot_Kevin Mar 31, 2012 at 5:10 pm
Too bad. I would've bought the green.

What's with these cases and leaving some extra space under the camera led light as if there is something there... What is it that they are giving breathing room for?
My Otterbox does the same thing.

It's for NFC. Not that the hole is NFC ; ) but potentially for better contact of the NFC.
xtremesniper Apr 1, 2012 at 1:46 pm
Ahhh I think that might make sense... I guess I'll have to try NFC out with another 7.1 user to know if it actually works. It never did between me and a 7.0 user so I'm hoping that's just an OS thing.

What's up with only doing 9900/9930 cases and skins, why no 9850/9860 products? Not every blackberry user had a curve or bold.

Have you found a holster for it? Case mate doesn't make one but with your plethora of cases and holsters I was wondering if you found one that fits.
Alicia Erlich Mar 31, 2012 at 10:11 pm
I found that the Seidio Active Holster works with it. It clips on perfectly and doesn't fall out.

Does anyone know if the Case-MateTough Case fit in the Blackberry 9000 leather slip in holster?
