Review: BlackBerry Flip Shell Case for the Q10

By James Richardson on 2 May 2014 12:31 pm EDT

I don't mind admitting that I'm not a case kinda guy when it comes to my BlackBerry. I like the naked feel of it, but I know most folk like to have some sort of protection from daily bumps and the occasional drop. After all, there's nothing worse than having chunks out of your beloved device - or worse case scenario a screen smash.

Luckily, the BlackBerry Flip Shell Case for the Q10 will prevent the aforementioned disasters from taking place. It's a beautifully crafted accessory with leather on both the front and back of the case and a velvet style material inside to prevent any marks or abrasions to your BlackBerry's display. It also has the famous BlackBerry magnetic magic built in, so when you open the case your screen will turn on and closing will have the opposite affect.

The actual shell of the case is made from hard plastic for extra durability and the Q10 sits tightly inside, but not too tight that it's a pain to remove. Available in both black and white the case really does feel nice in the hand - very much like a premium product. I'd say the only thing that you'll need to get used to is the flap that hangs below the device as you are typing away, but that's a small price to pay for protection.

Using the case won't hinder you from using any of the ports, media keys or the camera on the Q10 as there are cut outs for all. I was pretty impressed with the fact that there is also a hole in the front of the case so you can see your LED flashing when you get a notification - clever.

  • OEM BlackBerry case
  • Flips down
  • Full protection, front and back
  • Message notification light visible
  • Durable, lightweight
  • Hand-crafted genuine leather
  • Access to camera, ports and buttons
The Good
  • Great protection from every angle
  • A premium product - both in the looks and feel department
  • Stylish looks in both colors
  • Lightweight and doesn't add bulk to your BlackBerry
The Bad
  • The flap will seem a bit alien to start with
  • Not as durable as the likes of an Otterbox but certainly not as bulky
The bottomline

Before the BlackBerry Flip Shell Case for my Q10 arrived I wasn't particularly excited about it. However, once it was on the device I soon changed my mind as it really is a beauty. I'm not saying that I will use it every day, but for certain occasions (maybe drink related) it will potentially pay for itself easily.

If you're looking for a high quality, good looking case for your Q10 give this one some serious thought.

Review: BlackBerry Flip Shell Case for the Q10

At FIRST I thought it was a Bold 9900.

But in my view the Q10 should be naked. Without a case. or at least the original pouch holster! Plain and simple.

Me too!

I agree I Iike a holster & when in my hand I like it bare but the flip shells are cool too

Nicely done. Hey Quickie dr mike. It can be done well if done with some creativity.

Blackberry always.....

Right? I think it's fair game if someone post "first" and nothing else. Not even I can you. You are left to the mercy of nestle Quick.

I've already said this in the forum and i will say it again. This case is very slick design, proffesional style, elegant looking and really stands out, the cover doesn't really gets on the way when you try to recomendation is if you have a black q10, go for the black case. its really blends together nicelly..

I agree I have this on my white Q10 right now and love it. But sometimes the flap is a little annoying. Sometimes I go bare.

But anytime I have it on it makes my Q10 look so premo. Every friend I have is like wow that's a BlackBerry? Where did you get that?

This case is really high quality and makes your Q10 look kick ass.

I really like it, looks premium and the silver shiny logo leaves no doubt about what device you're using, especially the black one.

Was actually planning to attach a velcro dot on the flap, so it's stays closed securely. Bought some already a few months ago to avoid certain scenario which happened yesterday. (didn't actually get around to doing it, now paid the price for it...)

Fell out of my pocket when I parked the car, flap open or twisted to the side. Small scratch on the upper left corner now.

Only drawback with this case is the fact that for the swiping and to make it comfortable to hold, the plastic cover on the corners and around the bezel does not reach all the way up to the same level of the glass, leaving the device's corners exposed when it drops with flap open or when the flap gets pushed to the side on impact.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Yea, top flap got too loose on mine to hold anymore and it just shifted around and became useless. I ended up cutting the flap off and the case is pretty awesome without the flap.

Hmm, nice idea to cut the flap. Exactly what happened to me, it's too loose to hold together. Definitely not for heavy users opening it several times per minute. Wait, BlackBerry users are these heavy users ;-))).

I've been using this case for nearly a year. My Q is still in pristine condition in spite of a number of drops, and no screen protector is required. NFC function works fine with Tim's app and others. Battery life increases because the display turns off so quickly when the cover is closed. The grippy leather and ergonomic design enhances the look, and the cover really isn't a bother when open. A quick flip of the wrist is all I need to close it (like the old Star Trek communicator - 'Kirk out')

The only issue I had was that eventual stretching of the leather hinge meant the clasp was no longer tight. I improved it with a couple neat bumps of hot-melt glue on the inside of the hinge.

Would it be possible to show us a picture of how it looks so I know I'm gonna do it right?

Love to. I have a picture, and I know how to attach for a forum post, but haven't seen an option for attachments when replying to article-related comments.

Can you open a topic and post link here?

Otherwise, I'll go with my planned velcro dot solution.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

A velcro dot. A great idea, though I suppose you will have to stick it to the phone itself. I might actually try that.

And Prem, I will try to open a Forum post later with a picture and a few details.

Posted via CB10 on Q10

Thanks, just posted my velcro dot solution with a series of pics.

Plan to update, and let you know how it went. Will test several ways, and reverse the dots.

I've had this case since last May, and I love it. There isn't a more stylish way to protect the Q10 from falls and dust. And it makes a screen protector unnecessary. It's about time someone reviewed it!

Posted via CB10

I have this case and like it. The feel of the leather is soft and the joint where the cover folds over is nice and loose. I had a folding cover on my Note 3 and while it looked nice it never wanted to stay closed because the faux leather was so stiff.

Really, the only thing I wished was that the case opened like a book or folded at the top. I understand that with the camera folding from the top or even side is probably not the best idea for many, but I still think I would prefer it. Oh, I also wish the hook that keeps the case closed at the top was a bit tighter.

I ordered this the same time I ordered my Q10. I got it in white since I could only get my Q in black. I love it!

Post by 9of13's Q

It was the first case I bought for me Q. The clip to keep a closed, failed after a couple months. The case is great! The clip is junk!!!

There are (hopefully) always new BlackBerry and Crackberry users. Not everyone is going to sift through a thousand past articles to find valuable recommendations. You're welcome to cruise on by if it's something you've seen before.

After a few months of use the clip went really weak... anyone knows how to make it sit tighter there or how to make it gain the strength it once had?

Sweet fix bro! I wish I knew that before Xmas. Got a Vaja now. Just really missing the LED indicator window.

Secret Squirreling with my Q  BBM Channel C0001FE5D  DPI Private Investigations

I bought one on amazon, last week, in black. I quite like it.

The cons?

The clip slash a little on the power button and contrary to what the article says, it doesn't completely protects the Q10, since all corners still remains relatively exposed.

Bought this case when I bought my Q10 last July, and I love it. The cutout in the front to reveal the LED was an absolute must. The case fits the phone extremely well, and while I do my best to hang onto my phone, I do occasionally drop it! Not a mark on my phone--still as pristine as the day I bought it. I'd love to not need a case at all since the phone is so beautiful, but I'm not going to risk gashing it.

And I'm a BB snob, so I really wanted something with the BB symbol on the front! :o)

As others have mentioned, the clasp does loosen a bit with use, but it still stays closed on its own. I can see where the flap hanging down might bother some people at first, but I honestly don't even notice it.

I bought it in white, which can make it look like an iPhone from a distance, which is the only downside. It cleans up nicely with gentle leather cleaner. If something happens to this case, I would buy another one right away. I love the total protection it gives, and it's beautiful, besides.

I have this case for my Q10. My favorite part about is how well the LED shows through the case. Perfect. My greatest. Frustration in the magnetic on/off feature. However, this is because of my use and not anything wrong with the case. The problem is I use a holster during the week and this case on weekends. The holster I better for my business suits and this case it better for pockets. So, let's take a look at settings. I have set to ring when out of holster and vibrate when in holster. That makes no sense with this case so you need to change the setting and change it back to go back to a holster. Another setting allows you to have the phone hang-up calls when placed in the holster (unless using a wired or bluetooth headset). I use this during the week. On the weekend, when using this case, I have had the phone on speaker phone and closed the case, mistakenly terminating the call. Frustrating indeed. I could change the setting, but they I am changing settings all the time. Just something to think about if you are using this case side by side with a holster.

I bought this case for my white Q10 as well and I totally agree with your assessment, James. I have to say that what really impressed me was the small hole in the front of the case through which the ubiquitous LED will flash when a message has arrived - nice touch!

I too had a broken clasp on mine after 3 months or so of usage. All I ended up doing is cutting to flap part off and keeping the back on for protection, ok so I don't get screen scratch protection but hey I'm not too fussed.

Nice case overall, flip lid looses pressure after a while and after a few months the edges of flip peal off. The rubber at the edges seem so be not to well connecting to the leather and the plastic at the core of the lid.

Overall not bad, but could be improved a bit after a year on the market.

Been using this case since I got my Q10, and after well over 6 months of use, I can say that it has withstood all the abuse i've thrown at it. My only gripe is that the moulded leather "hook" that keeps the case shut did not stay tight for long, and by about the 3 month mark, it loosened to the point that it would not stay closed if you were to hold the phone up face-down. That said, it is far more durable than the Z10 flip shell, and thanks to its magnet, can be used to end calls (setting under the phone app) simply by closing it. Really nice accessory, just wish that top bit hadn't worn out so fast.

See my earliest post in this thread. There is a 'fix' for the clasp when it gets looser over time. The solution is to take up the slack in the hinge, which is where the problem lies.

I picked up one of these after months of using an OE holster which I found to be uncomfortable especially when sitting in the car (and having the handset fall out of the holster and onto the pavement when getting out of the car). It probably doesn't protect as well against drops as the pocket pouch but is easier to use and does not run the same risk of being lost. The Q10 is no longer my daily device (having been won over by the larger display of the Z10) but I would recommend this case, for all of the reasons given by the reviewer, to other users who can live with their handset in a non-naked state. I would add only that I did not find handset removal from the case to be as easy as did the reviewer. The fit of the hands to the case is rather tight, enough so that it feels as though the plastic may deform when trying to pry the handset from it. If frequent access to the battery, sim card, or micro SD card is important then this case might not be the best option.

Had it from day 1 with my Q and I still love it. It is fully protected and, most importantly for me, I don't need a screen cover.

Initially thought opening from top down was weird, but it is way better than the side so I can comfortably type.

Great job BlackBerry!

I got this case when I got my Q10 last month and totally like it. The way I drop stuff accidentally ( a neuropathy thing), well this case protects my device awesomely. I couldn't have asked for more. I had a case for my 9310 Curve also, but it wasn't nearly as nice as this one is.

I have a very similar Blackberry case for my Q5 in case any of the readers are wondering about a Q5 case. The hanging flap does take a bit of getting used to when texting and as I can see from the above posts that the clip may be the weak part of the design. The black case covers up the plastic look of the black Q5 and the phone fits well and it has all the cut outs for the ports. Definitely recommend it.

Sweet case and thank you. BUT Enough with Black & White; to me it is boring, give us more colors.

I used this case for awhile before I finally got an Otterbox. I really liked the flip case, until the little clip that holds the flap in place kind off gave up. Still works ok without the clip, but not quite the same.

I have this case...the black one, and I'm not complaining at all, it does exactly what it's said about it...must have

Posted via CB10

Very slick case for sure! Have in black on my phone ad no major issues but flap sure gets annoying after a while!

I already got this !!! Loving it... Only problem is because its white in colour its gets little dirty soon !

Love this case. Only thing I recommend to change is to cut out a small piece of the leather where the speaker is... even at full blast, the ringer is quite muffled... in my experience anyway.

Posted via CB10

So, anybody bought it and tried it out? It looks nice but, I do prefer the Q10 plain and simple.

Why don't blackberry updates new addictive game like Dr.Driving, etc which are there in samsung mobiles?

Posted via CB10

surprised nobody said to flip back the top to the back side. i use it like that when in hands and it works perfectly. not even bothered when using the camera, just swipe it away to the left a bit - all done smooth and ease. i love the case and mine still closes firm after half a year use, but i keep it open when in longer use, not closing and opening that often.

Looking for a better case for the z10. Would you recommend the poetic atmosphere case. Plz reply
