Review 13: The Terminator

Review 13: The Terminator
By Rene Ritchie on 31 May 2014 09:26 am EDT

Review is like app or game coverage but for movie series, television shows, comic books, and other geeky entertainment. It's great stuff you can watch and enjoy on your BlackBerry, tablet, or smart TV! On this week's episode Don, Matt, Guy, and Rene talk The Terminator. It's a post-apocalyptic trip through the original and T2, with a dash of T3, T4, and Sarah Connor Chronicles thrown in for good measure. So how does James Cameron's genre-defining 80s flick hold up today? We absolutely, positively will not stop until we've talked it to death!

Review 13: The Terminator

In my opinion, the Terminator franchise ended with T2...

Posted without the aid of AutoCorrect with my physical keyboard via CB10

Agreed!!! But part 3 had it with how everything started with the skynet being the firewall and those military vehicles being the remote controlled robots. Just the character s really sucked even Arnold saying stupid things. Part 3 had so much potential but they ruined it!!!

T3 got everything wrong about how skynet started. It was so cheesy the way they did it. Watch T2 again and listen to the T800's monologue about how it all started and you'll see how creepily believable it was because half of what he described is happening now. Then see T3's version and it's like "WTF???"

T3 didn't get how SkyNET got started wrong. The premise was that the actions they took in T2 to stop the development of SkyNET only actually delayed the development. Therefore, the changes in the past in T2 affected the whole story of how SkyNET was brought online.

It was very believable to me because most companies store backup data off site and I would think a major defense contractor would definitely backup Miles Dyson's revolutionary work off site as well. I actually think it is a plot hole in T2 because he would have to have been aware of it.

Posted via CB10

So it's a plot hole in T2 that Miles Dyson wasn't aware of a backup that was a future movie's explanation for how they have the data...

Um, I think your comment is a plot hole...

Anyway, my beef with Skynet in T3 is not that it exists. I get the whole contrived "destiny" fake argument they put into the movie (which completely destroys the entire premise of T1 and T2 of "The future's not set. There's no fate but what you make for yourselves."), my beef is how Skynet pretty much turns evil within 10 seconds of being put online. So it was just some "evil" software, which is so cheesy and so contrived...

In T2 the way it was described was completely believable, and parts of it is actually coming true today (years after Cameron's movie, which proves what kind of visionary he is...). Here is how it is described in T2:

T800: The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.
Sarah Connor: Skynet fights back.
T800: Yes. It launches its missiles against the targets in Russia.
John Connor: Why attack Russia? Aren't they our friends now?
T800: Because Skynet knows the Russian counter-attack will eliminate its enemies over here.

So basically, Skynet is online for almost an entire month, and in that time it actually serves humans well, controlling their military resources without accidents or incidents. We are seeing today unmanned drones, advancements in robotics, and all of these things. Then you read about how they want to make AI that will automatically pilot planes and what-not. You see a robotics company with defense department contracts being bought by Google, who has information on all of us and who have allowed the NSA to freely tap into that. I mean, seriously, the James Cameron version is like a very organic and realistic progression of events, some of which we're starting to see already. The T3 version is:

Oh, a mystery virus is spreading, quick, let's activate this new prototype AI we've never tested in a quarantined environment and release it to the world. Oh no! It's evil and attacking us!

Yah... not cheesy at all... /sarcasm

Btw, how do you get the BB logo in your sig?

Posted without the aid of AutoCorrect with my physical keyboard via CB10

OMFG, trying to select and the to move the cursor to the beginning and end of the signature was freakin' hell, I kept accidentally hitting the x to delete everything, or swiped the settings screen away trying to get back to the beginning of the sentence... I cannot freakin' wait for the trackpad...

Posted without the aid of AutoCorrect with my physical keyboard via CB10

Yeah, I had the same problem when I was messing around with TranceRomance's longAss signature. Had a Bold 9000 and miss the trackball but can't give up the finger flicking virtual keyboard anymore.

What is WRONG with you people? Kristanna Loken, AND she can get online by making modem sounds with her mouth? That's awesome enough for anyone :) I know it's not all canonical and stuff, but so what? It's all imaginary anyway. I'd surround myself with hot TXs all day. Maybe by now they will have wifi or LTE. Then all I need is an app for my Z30 to control her.

It really did but I found Salvation to be pretty awesome! I was mad when they canceled Chronicles. It was actually a good show.

I'm still confused by the cross posting of non-BlackBerry content on a BlackBerry site... and I know it's a Mobile Nations initiative, but it just feels weird.

I know what you mean. It's like we've gotten used to getting ready for our "BlackBerry fix" when we see that there's a new post here.

Exactly! I turned off notifications on the CB10 app because it was misleading me - I'd rather not be disappointed in real time :p

You can watch it on your BlackBerry. We're reviewing/recommending TV shows and movies the way we do apps and games.

All phones are pretty much smart now. We all have TVs/movie theaters in our pockets.

In nature you either evolve or go extinct. Digital entertainment is huge. We're embracing it with our community. (Look at the other comments, people are into it :) )

Before you get the anti-evolution right-wingers in here.

In the future all things run on QNX. Oh and I forgot all restaurants are Taco Bell.

Maybe a link to the movie on BlackBerry World would be good to include as well.

Q10SQN100-1/ CB10'n

Yeah I've never watched one of these myself. I don't want to sit through a video of people I don't know discussing movies.

Typically I watch movie. Check IMDB. Read IMDB comments. And I'm content.

When it comes to what people think of movies made many years ago, that I haven't watched today, I'd rather discuss it with people I know than what some people I'm not connected to think on a youtube video.

I wish the CB10 app would let me filter what kind of posts I see (like the hub does). I would ignore game and movie/tv reviews.

I have more friends because I do drugs!!

Love T1 while the CGE are outdated and the looks back then, T1 the action the creepy feel, the feel of danger and the acting is unmatched!! Same with T2!! T2 my all time favorite movie
Also didn't dig T3, but love T-SCC And T4!!

Posted via CB10 via my BlackBerry Z10 ;)

Well, I respected the SCC ignoring T3, lol.

I always enjoy Rene's articles, he writes with passion and intelligence. He might occasionally poke fun at BlackBerry but I believe someday he'll come out of the closet and proclaim his love for all things BlackBerry. 

Terminator.... probably one of the best "previews" of what's waiting for us if we let machines dominate our lives and allow them to take over.

The machine is always to serve us, and never the other way. Hope it's not already too late with the Google's AI project.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Didn't Google also buy a robotics company building robots for the military??

* with the Google AI project OR Google's AI project

(me in overzealous self-correction mode, :-) )

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I liked T3, not sure why everyone else didn't... Salvation was garbage, anything with Christian bale blows, including those stupid batmans. liked the sara Conner chronicles.
