Looks interesting but couldn't you just look up the area code? I've done that a few times.

Keep your dollar and download/install Poynt! You can Reverse Lookup from the Phone app with Poynt installed and once you have the lookup info, you can even do other stuff like map the location and even get directions to the location via GPS. Much more rounded solution.

No...

Posted by DravenX Saturday, Sep 12, 2009 985 days ago

I looked up 216 area code and it came up with Cleveland, Ohio. Maybe if it gave a name or company name than it might be worth it. If not than this app should be free.

Posted by laollis Saturday, Sep 12, 2009 985 days ago

and Poynt is free.

On my Tour, I see the option for Reverse Lookup is already built into my phone. It doesn't work, I get some kind of error saying I need to change call logging or some crap like that. The error message also says it is a known problem and they are working on it. So, should I even bother with this app when it supposedly is in my phone and I'm assuming will be fixed?

I paid $0.80 for it (used a coupon) and it totally doesn't work. I tried a bp, and still doesn't work.

Posted by dmglakewood Saturday, Sep 12, 2009 985 days ago

What doesn't work about it? This app doesn't have an icon. The app runs in the background and when a call comes in that isn't on your contact list it will popup. Have you had a call come in that isn't on your contact list?

A lot of users complain about paying for apps, which I can understand in some cases. Apps that are overpriced I could see the reason for a complaint. This app is a measly 1$ though. That's less then a double cheeseburger from McDonalds.

I create apps for a living. If all the apps were free I wouldn't be able to pay my bills or even afford food. All my apps are aggressively priced and great quality. Not to mention the support that comes with all my apps.

I'm not trying to call anyone out, I'm just trying to show you the other side of the spectrum. I don't think you guys would like it if your company decided to stop selling their products and just give everything away free. This would result in you being fired and not being able to pay your bills to eat.

=)

I'd like to think I'm not a moron, but....

I installed the app. When the phone rings (number not in my address book), I don't see anything special. After the call is ignored or goes unanswered, I don't see anything. When I go into the call log and hit menu, I don't see any reverse lookup option.

I'm running 4.5.0.160 on a Verizon 8830.

After you installed the app did you do a battery pull?

Posted by Jonneh Saturday, Sep 12, 2009 985 days ago

I love this place.

A post pops up at crackberry.com about a new app priced at $15. Everyone goes haywire (understandably).

A post pops up with an app priced at $4.99. Everybody still goes nuts (sort of understandably).

Now, a post pops up about an app that costs $1.00. STILL people are complaining in the comments over and over again? Jesus Christ, shut your mouths already. This shit is getting BEYOND ridiculous now. I agreed with you before, now it's just pathetic. You don't even make logical sense anymore. Go take a class at your local community college about logic and reason, PLEASE. Pretty please. You really need this.

i installed this app this morning , paid for it .

well i just checked the totals from the call log . 13 different callers today from outside the phone address book .

NOT ONCE did this app work , not once did it show a single thing on the screen .

to make sure the app was even on the phone i had to check the app list !

might as well haven't been there , did work .

emailed tech support , that was a joke .

my reply was as follows:

"The application doesn't have an icon. The application does all the work for you. When you get a call that isn't on your contact list the app will open up and let you know where the call is from.

I hope that helps

Thanks,
Dave"

DUH ! is that a copy and paste from the description of the app ?

what a waste !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm only 1 man. It's impossible to take care of the 200+ emails per day while trying to work on fixing bugs / creating new apps etc.

I still replied to you within 10 minutes and I was trying to help you out. To call my email support a joke really gets under my skin. What did you want me to drop everything in the world and focus on just your issue? If so pm me your phone number and I will call you directly. How many other developers would do that?

I've released an update for the app and it should solve your issue. Then again I don't know what your issue is. Instead of working with me to solve the issue you just bash my support.

Cool, but not everyone wants all the extras. I bet BerryAddon isn't 17kb in size either.

Great app at a great price, thanks for thinking of it!
You should note, the update you did last night fixed my issue of not being able to exit the app.
I sent a tech support email this morning. If its possible to update the app to show company name/ or caller name from a reverse look up, then I think this app will be a real winner and EXTREMELY worth the price.

Also, I'm on Verizon and the app is not launching until after a missed call. Is that because of CDMA?

thanks again.
And come on People, its only 99 cents! Give the developer some time to work the bugs out!!!

Be encouraged man. Many of the people who have posted comments have more than shown their immaturity. Mature individuals don't make many of the comments made on this posting.

First of all, if you don't want to pay $1 for an app, something is wrong wit you. If a person can take time to make an app that will hopefully benefit the BlackBerry community, is $1 too much to ask? If it is, then you've got bigger problems than paying $1 for an app.

Yes, some apps are free and useful. This one isn't. Get over it. There is no need to cry and whine about every LITTLE thing in life that doesn't quite go your way. This is probably one of the smallest issues in life that you could face, but many of you act like the world is coming to an end. Good grief.

Secondly, if something you bought isn't working as it should, coming on here to complain about it IS NOT going to help the developer at all. Personally, just by seeing that dmglakewood is willing to come on here and subject himself to your scrutiny speaks multitudes to his willingness to stand by his product and offer great support. As I read, he is only one man. If support emails aren't responded to in 5 minutes, wow... Come on here and start ripping him a new one? How adult-like is that?

Some of you need a lesson in communication and respect. If you're above the age of 18, and have been a negative contributor to this posting, then shame on you. You have a lot to learn and I'm more than sure that the road of life for you will be hard until you get rid of that pride and ego issue.

Lastly, I just bought the app because I've on more than one occasion have searched Google looking up an area code to see where the caller was calling from. I didn't have to know their name, but many times knowing where they were calling from was very beneficial. And at only 17kb and for $1, what do I have to lose? NOTHING! If you can't afford a dollar, it's time to find a better job, or put more faith in God to meet your needs from heaven or something.

Grow up people.

That's the lesson of the day.

Great job dmglakewood!!!

hey "fordthunder" & "dmglakewood" thanks for the replies to my question!

Posted by glaz Sunday, Sep 13, 2009 984 days ago

Probably one of the more intense thread I've read in a few days! :-) Here's my two cents. (sorry if I don't use your name because for some reason, the rest of the threads disappeared when I opened the reply thingy up.) I think the programmer that made this app should take a chill pill, or two.

If this is your first time doing business of any kind, you have already failed miserably. :-( First, as a programmer, you should know that a decent to great app needs to be tested in many different environments before pushing the app out to the public. It is understandable that every possible variation can't be tested, and there will be glitches, especially in the first public release, but to start a bitching match with a user/customer isn't the way to do business.

People will complain if the app was only a nickel. You should know this already, unless you just came along yesterday. When people pay anything for a product and/or service, they at the very least expect it t work as advertised. Hell, even close to what was advertised would be fine.

Yes, for those who wish to be paid for their work, should be, but when someone DO pay for it, they expect a solution to their problem, not a programmer that comes on a public site and rant/raves at their paying customer(s)! That's totally uncool, and un-business like! Guess whom I won't be buying anything from?

Also, just another word of advice. Instead of coming on here and telling someone, "what am I suppose to do, drop everything and focus on you?" type statements, (which should basically tell everyone that you REALLY don't care), you should have an auto-reply setup on an email account just for support matters, telling people that their problem(s) are being addressed and will be addressed, but it might not be immediate. Or words to that effort.

You haven't done yourself any favors by choosing the path of the "I'm not going to take this crap from paying customers" road!Just my two cents.

Posted by dmglakewood Sunday, Sep 13, 2009 984 days ago

I agree and disagree to a lot of what you said.

I care about my customers 100%. I spend hours each day answering emails, responding to pm's, responding to comments, responding to youtube comments etc. I post on a public board and I talk to my customers all the time. They request features and I add them. They say something is wrong and I fix it. They can't figure out how to use the app and I explain it to them.

With all that being said I take it personally when someone says my customer support sucks. Just because I wasn't able to fix their problem in 1 email they talk bad about it? It just doesn't make sense to me.

As for testing the app, I had 25 beta testers test the app on multiple platforms and multiple OS's on those platforms. This even includes beta OS's and hybrid OS's. I would never push an app out to the public that I'm not 100% sure it works. If any of the beta testers had a problem with it I would have no pushed it out. I got an "ok" from all 25 of them and released the app. When I started to get a few emails saying users were having issues with the app I looked into the problem. Within 24 hours I released an update that solved all the users problems they were having.

I grateful for all my followers / customers, but at the same time I think some of them require too much. They want everything to be free, if there is an issue they want it fixed right that second. If they don't know how to work the app they want it explained right away. I was just simply trying to say I'm only 1 person and I try my hardest to help everyone asap, but sometimes it takes a little bit to get to their emails.

You can take from it what you want, but those who know me and who have purchased my apps know that I'm one of the best when it comes to customer service and supporting my apps.

Posted by dmglakewood Sunday, Sep 13, 2009 984 days ago

Can you explain a little better? What exactly is it doing? I've had 8 users confirm that the update solved their issue. Have you tired a reboot?

If you can provide a little more info I will be able to fix the issue or help you get it working.

What phone doe you have and what OS are you running?

Come on, this makes no sense. 25 beta testers say the app is okay, you put it out and all of a sudden problems? I think you need some NEW beta testers, sheez.

Something is wrong with the beta testers these days. There have been quite a few apps that were beta tested and put out ONLY to find out there were errors, bwaaaah. I'm thinking there is a problem somewhere with the testing/review process.

This sounds like another beta app pushed out just to make a buck (which is pretty darn sad).

Just a tip, but maybe in the future you should have a public beta for this app, get some feed back, don't whine about it, make the app better than and only then put it out and charge a buck for it. But charging a buck for an app with issues isn't good. Look at the comments above and how people hate this app. You can do what you want with my suggestions but they can only help you in the future. Is the all mighty buck worth your reputation as a developer?

How many of these people would purchase any apps in the future that you have anything to do with based on this app? My guess is not many.

Quote from above...

I'm only 1 man. It's impossible to take care of the 200+ emails per day while trying to work on fixing bugs creating new apps etc. [Yep, sounds like you are just pushing apps out the door to make a buck. Make one app, make sure it works and go on to the next. It is only good business.]

The problem is you can test it all day long, but in the real world that doesn't matter on a large scale. Every single blackberry is different. Some people have tons or 3rd arty apps, while others have none. Some people have data plans while others don't. Some people have less then 5mb of total app memory while others have 100mb+.

Everything is different and it's impossible to simulate everything. I try my best to imagine everything while I'm programming. Then I push it off to the testers and see if they can brake the app. Yes I actually tell them do everything they can to break the app and if they can then I fix the issue.

A good example of this would be the Storm, Iphone, Mac, Windows basically every major company has issues when releasing a new piece of software. I'm sure Microsoft had a ton of highly paid beta testers to test out Windows Vista, but when it was launched it was a huge mess. They've since found the issues and fixed them with patches etc. What I do is no different. I release an app I think is flawless and when I find a bug I fix it and release an update.

I would never release software that I knew had issues.

As for creditability I don't think that's an issue. I released an update within 24 hours of the first release. This means I noticed what the issue was patched it and updated the app. This shows that I truly care about the app and the customers. I could have easily just left it alone and kept the money. That's not who I am though and that's not how I do business. I'm not in business to screw people over I'm in business to help customize and enhance your blackberry.

installed the update immediately last night/this morning .

performed a battery pull .

STILL not working .

BB Curve 8330
US Cellular
OS: 4.5.0.169
color: tungsten
LED color Blue

how much more info do you need to get this app working ?
sorry , just trying to find some humor in the matter.

as for the people saying to grow up , its just a dollar , blah blah ...

when you go to the store , and buy something and it doesnt work or whatever . do you say , oh well or do you go back to the store and complain or return the item ?

if thats the case , i have a few things laying around that are junk , send your money to my paypal address .
i wont even send it , but oh well . you dont care anyways ... right ?

same thing here , the app was purchased REGARDLESS of the price .
the app shows to be installed on the BB yet doesnt do a SINGLE thing . no screen , error , etc...

Posted by tmp3150 Sunday, Sep 13, 2009 984 days ago

This proves you are in it for the money only, and I quote...

"A lot of users complain about paying for apps, which I can understand in some cases. Apps that are overpriced I could see the reason for a complaint. This app is a measly 1$ though. That's less then a double cheeseburger from McDonalds."

What kind of attitude that is? You expect everyone to give you a buck, but in return you wont give them a working app (look at the bugs in this app and in past apps).

How about if I give you my paypal address and you give me a dollar for ever time you make the comment about it just being a buck and people have serious problems if they are complaining about paying a buck?

As I said before, it is your reputation, not mine. If you are so concerned about putting out good apps why not make the apps public beta apps, get tons of feedback, then fix the bugs? Then once the app is working then sell it for a buck?

Enough said on this topic.

Posted by dmglakewood Monday, Sep 14, 2009 984 days ago

While what you say is fine and dandy, you can tell that you have never released a large scale application to the public. I could hold a public beta and get feedback, but that is next to impossible to maintain and keep up with. Having thousands of users emailing me everyday, I would never get anything done.

I've been doing it this way for almost a year and I found what works best for everyone.

I have beta testers test the apps for a few weeks and I make changes based off of their feedback. When they are satisfied with it I go ahead and release it. I make a thread and interact with the customers to make sure all is well. I also monitor comments like on this blog post. If I see something wrong I will fix the issue and upload a new version asap. I've released a dozen apps using this same method including the 2nd most popular blackberry app on crackberry.

While this might not be ideal to you, from my point of view it's the most productive way of doing it. Like I said earlier though I would never release something I know has bugs, but if I find a bug I release an update ASAP.

If I owned a large company and had a support staff doing a public beta would work best, but since I'm only 1 person I wouldn't be able to keep up with everything. I hope that makes sense and I hope you see it from another point of view. You seem to be one sided though and I feel like I'm fighting a loosing battle trying to defend myself.

Hello dmglakewood,

Just downloaded and installed the app and it is not working as it should I think.

When I receive a call, reverselookup does popup, but then it is immediately replaced by the call screen. The call screen is on top of it.

Is that how it should work? Is Reverselookup intended informative AFTER a phone call?

Also, I've called from my home phone, and my office phone and I get weird number and location info.

For example:

Number: ome- 3-3369
Location: No Record Found

Using a BlackBerry Tour.

Please advise.

Thanks

Posted by billarch Monday, Sep 14, 2009 983 days ago

I downloaded ver 1.05, and then updated over the past few days to 1.08 then 1.09 (I think the versions are correct.)

Reverselookup does popup after a missed call now that I installed the latest update. It did not do that before.

I can not access it in any other menu, folder, call log, etc. It only works with a missed incoming call.

As an example it will display:
Number: obi-2053
Location: No Record Found

Verizon, 8330, 4.5.0.138

Thanks

downloaded the second update now ,

i just got a call from my wife . she is in the address book and called from her work number ( second work number )

the screen popped up and displayed :

NUMBER: wor-2423
LOCATION: no record found .

US CELLULAR 8330 , 4.5.0.169

Updated again this morning (v 1.1.1) and now it doesn't work at all, again. I tried rebooting, looking in different folders, called my phone to test and no pop up at all anymore.

Verizon, 8330, 4.5.0.138

Thanks

Upgraded today to 1.1.1. As billarch as stated, it is not working at all now.

Blackberry Tour .42

Posted by kingzee Wednesday, Sep 16, 2009 981 days ago

The application is working great on my Tour. It works as it should now. It only pops up AFTER a missed call.

Posted by kingzee Wednesday, Sep 16, 2009 981 days ago

Well, it seems to work sometimes, and others it does not. I'm testing it. I had a call come through and when I missed it, RL popped up. When I test from my home phone, NOTHING pops up afterward. Also, if I press ignore, shouldn't it still popup? Also, if I miss a call, the missed call window comes up instead of RL on most occassions.
