If you remember a few weeks back we let you know about Spencer West, an amazing man who was planning a climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro for the charity Free The Children. Spencer and co. started off on their climb a few days ago and today they have finally achieved their goal as they reached the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Along the way they have been documenting their journey through video, blog posts and Twitter with the help of their BlackBerry phones and PlayBook.
"I set out to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro not only to redefine what's possible for me, but to inspire others to overcome obstacles and challenges of their own, and to give back to communities, that need our help," said West. "Reaching the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro was the most mentally and physically challenging thing I have ever done, but in doing so, it reinforced the powerful message behind believing in yourself, and believing in others. So many people made this journey possible for me and I am so humbled by everyone's support."
In making the climb they have raised over $500,000 for Free The Children, bringing sustainable clean water programming to thousands of Kenyans. You can check out video updates from the entire climb and find out more about Free The Children from the link below. Congrats Spencer!

We create most of our limitations, or let others convince us of them. He shows anything is possible.

Whether it's RIM, Android, or Apple the real story is not technology it's about people and how we give ourselves away to others daily. This story is incredible and demonstrates just that; in spite of incredible adversity.
All of us have (in us) the possibility to make a difference. Failure + Perseverance = Success. Just do it for the right reasons.

Congratulations to the team of climbers! I can't imagine a more triumphant journey. Your selflessness is what all of human kind should long for. I hope to have learned a little something from this story.

Wow. That is an incredible accomplishment and very exciting. That this man could even survive with so much of him gone, not to mention climb a mountain is amazing. Many people with 2 arms and 2 legs give up and sit around watching TV all day.

Well, half of him made it......
(Before any of you jump down my throat you should know that I'm a victim of thalidomide.)

If you cant make jokes about things then you are taking yourself way too seriously.
by the way,
CLIMB: to go up or ascend, especially by using the hands and feet or feet only:
based on that definition.......well.....
:)
BTW - I am not a victim of anything except my own sick sense of humor.

"If you cant make jokes about things then you are taking yourself way too seriously."
Either that or blow your brains out. Some just don't understand. If all it took was determination and hard work than everyone would be a millionaire as well. The real world doesn't work that way.
I think that to a person like Spencer West not having any legs was irrelevant. He is the type of person who would have made no matter what. Legs or no legs.
Labelling those who don't have this as being lazy or parasites is just wrong and ignorant.

maybe they should have taken the old tighty whitey's down from behind and above his head first before the picture was taken. good job, shows you can do anything with corporate sponsorship.
ckl_88 Jun 20, 2012 at 12:47 pm
He should be in a RIM commercial.... seriously.
BlackBerryRulesTheWorld Jun 20, 2012 at 2:11 pm
This is inspiring for anyone. This guy has shown me the way, and now I will try harder to achieve what I want to achieve in life. Thank you Spencer.
