Quick look at Facebook for PlayBook v1.0.40
Yesterdays BlackBerry PlayBook OS update brought with it some new features for the software as well as a new version of Facebook for PlayBook. The latest version of Facebook is now at 1.0.40 and has some cool new features to go along with it. Along with some tweaks and fixes, Facebook for PlayBook has also added:
-
Video Uploading - Shoot video and directly upload or choose a video from your media folder to upload.
-
Facebook Search enhancements - Revamp of the search features now allows for easier finding of friends and Facebook Page using the Pages Search.
-
Improved access to Pages - A new Pages tab is accessible from the Friends list where you can view My Pages and Pages You Like.
-
Message deletion - You can now delete a Facebook message. Simply press and hold the screen until a delete button appears, and then tap the delete button to remove the message.
-
News Feed improvements - Interact with your News Feeds via the More button to Like or comment on posts without having to leave the News Feed view
-
Photo Upload Album Selection - when uploading a photo, simply select the album that you would like to upload the photo to.
-
Options and Help Center - Options and Help Center, Logout button now moved. Swipe down on the top bezel to access them
Overall some pretty cool new updates. Facebook for PlayBook is free in BlackBerry App World, but if you already updated your PlayBook to the latest OS you should have it rocking already. Check out the video above for a quick look at all the new features.

Does this app download Facebook content when bridged through the phone (3G, etc) or does it require a WIFI connection for the PlayBook?
xweb10 Jun 7, 2011 at 2:52 pm
Anyone?
tuffy100 Jun 7, 2011 at 3:12 pm
no, it isn't a Bridge app. You can, however, use it if you are tethered to your phone. Other than that, it requires a wifi connection.
xweb10 Jun 7, 2011 at 3:45 pm
Thanks. That kills it for me because WIFI access is never to be depended on. Having my Blackberry is. If tether.com ever gets going on the playbook, I will be purchasing one.

Its good you can view your fan pages but I want to know if you can edit them and upload content like video and pictures. I would buy the playbook tomorrow if I could get a Facebook app on blackberry that allows me to manage my small businesses Facebook fan page. I-rip off has had that feature for ever now and I would love to see it soon.

How do yo "refresh" the page while on FB? Mine does not seem to update unless I close and re-open the program.
f1mx Jun 7, 2011 at 2:46 pm
you have to scroll like wanting to see what's up from the top of the news feed (no bezel sliding) and the app refreshes itself
texasbid Jun 7, 2011 at 2:53 pm
Thanks!
f1mx Jun 7, 2011 at 2:46 pm
this app will be much better if it displays groups and events
f1mx Jun 7, 2011 at 2:46 pm
and supports group chat
theHip Jun 7, 2011 at 2:50 pm
Yep. Still waiting for the ability to view Event pages. Why is this never included on BlackBerry's?
texasbid Jun 7, 2011 at 2:55 pm
I agree! I use the events for clients and not being able to update those from my BB PB is inconvenient. Rim really needs to add this functionality to the PB and our BB phones.

I installed Facebook beta for BB and that doesn't even include event integration. I sounded off in the feedback survey surronding that app, so hopefully they hear us out!

Whats the 411 on the Crackberry Icon? Or is that just a shortcut?
thaboy Jun 7, 2011 at 5:37 pm
im very interested in it. it appears to be the cb launcher icon. i tried to download it on the playbook and i am getting an error once trying to open it.
ad396 Jun 7, 2011 at 10:26 pm
It kept telling me that I am not connected to the internet. And when I try again it works. Is anybody else getting this error?

can I download this updated version of the FB app WITHOUT the updated OS? I would like to keep reader's digest so i don't want to update my os just yet.

Is it just me, or does playbook in vid seem to lag? I am a little disappointed in seeing playbook in actual use, with all the hype of hardware and how "powerful" it was suppose to be, I would expect zero lag and seamless operation.
I have only played with playbook at bestbuy once for approx 5-10 min, not enough time to have understanding of tablet yet.
I am still on the fence on whether to get one.......

Hey guys, can anyone help me out? I seem to keep getting an "error has occurred" message every time I try to upload any kind of media from the facebook app from my Playbook. Is there a workaround? Thanks
titusilvering Jun 8, 2011 at 12:11 pm
upload photo portion dont work at all....
1canuck2 Jun 8, 2011 at 3:36 pm
Upload photo works for me. I did one already. Note: I have the OS update as well...
Thunderbuck Jun 9, 2011 at 11:38 am
One MASSIVE, important change that comes from this update, GPS!!
The communications controller chip had GPS support built-in, but the previous system software didn't support it. It now works.

I have the same problem too. I cannot upload any photos or any media from my bb playbook. Everytime I try, it immediately gives me the "an error has occurred" message. Has anyone come across any solutions yet?
