Slowly but surely we are starting to see apps getting long running headless approval. This means we can start to have them run in the background without the need to leave them in an Active Frame. Personally, there are some apps I like to leave open in an Active Frame, especially when the display useful information. But I like that some apps can go headless. Just like Profile Changer Pro. This is an app I like quite a lot and I am glad to see it get headless approval.

Profile Changer Pro allows you to automatically change your notification profile. You can set the time of day and duration too. It highly customizable and a pretty great app. You can check out our review of Profile Changer Pro to see it in action.

Now that Profile Changer Pro had headless permission, all you have to do is set everything up just the way to like it that's it. No need to remember to leave it open in an Active Frame. It was certainly something many people wanted to see come to the app, so I'm glad it got the green light.

Profile Changer Pro needs to BlackBerry OS 10.2 and above to run. It is available for all BlackBerry 10 devices and costs $2.99.

Nice!! $2.99 is a bit steep but makes up for it in features!

One of the wallpaper changer apps is now headless as well. Would like to see a weather app go headless or Shao's WC HD.

Shifty88

How would a headless weather app work though? Where would you look to check the weather? Headless just means it can run in the background without an Active Frame, not that it can display its info somewhere else like at the top of the screen or in a widget-like window like on Android.

1magine

Could run in a bar along the top of the device or as live icon similar to BBOS 7/7.1, 6 & 5. BEWeather was among my favorite app in legacy BBs. Also see Android's use of headless weather.

Shifty88

But that's what I just said can't happen. BB Hasn't allowed for that. It just grants the app permission to run in the background. I'd love to see apps work like they did on BBOS but it doesn't seem like that's what BB wants to do. I dunno if it's in the works or what but I kinda want it all back.

A bar that updates with information can happen long headless. Whether it is stock information or weather.

Shifty88

Well then, I stand corrected and would love to see this with BeWeather Pro since I just got it free. :P

mnc76

Where does this bar sit on screen? Does BB10 allow apps to use the notification bar at the top to add 3rd party notification icons now?

MNC - see wallpaper changer HD in BB world for example. This app is not yet headless, but you can see wat app developer has done to date.

mnc76

I think what he does is actually alter the background image. So the bar is actually a just picture.

I don't think this is a BB10 notification area (I don't think BB10 has one).

Wallpaper changer by Toysoft is $.99 and is headless, and Watcher is also $ .99 and is headless and has wallpaper changer and customizable LED. Need some of the e-mail and text to voice apps to also start running headless. Hoping to get there by January.

I'm waiting for bebuzz pro to go headless so I can start using it again . Always nice to see updates even for things I don't use, positive sign from developers.

red72

That's what I'm waiting for honestly. The main one. I don't even have it on my phone anymore because of that. Will re-download when it's headless.

Waiting for BeBuzz Pro as well. Then I'll start using it again...

You're in luck. My color led message is now headless also. Check the bb10 apps forum or check BlackBerry world. The first and only headless led app.

Nharzhool

I know that feel, Bro. I forked out for the app so I want it to be headless...I'm tired of leaving an active frame open.

PeterDR1

Please add a feature to lower brightness and switch the phone to airplane mode PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In BB World, when viewing this item, press the overflow button and hit "Contact Developer" and put these requests in a mail to them...this way, they are sure to see your request. :-)

Would love the Auto On/Off feature that I had on my Torch, on my Z10...

But it is taking sooooo long.

Profile changer is a good one, I think I will use it. Definitely need Beweather and BeBuzz to be headless!!!

scalemaster34

Really wanting to see more of these....

But I'm afraid that the battery life on my Z10 is not going to allow them.

When will 10.2.1 be official?

Do you need 10.2 or 10.2.1?

10.2 & above.

Great app, going back to when I had it on my 9900. On my Z10 with 10.2.1.1055, this version crashes everytime I try to use the calendar profiles (from either app main screen or menu screen). A few anomalies, but could be due leak I'm running. So glad it's headless, and that we are seeing headless apps now. Bring back the auto on/off feature Blackberry!

Leonatthebeach

+1 on Auto On/Off

This is off topic, but is there a profile BB10 app available that uses geofencing to set profile settings?

Smiley88

Color led message is now headless also.

Check out Color Led Message in BlackBerry World! You can find it at http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/24595876

Non pro version also looks to be headless

This may be worth me manually updating to 10.2. Since ATT is being so slow about it

Nope...we got a POS Android Port for running...

MrGlenn

Seems like a great app to me, but I do not really need all the additional possibilities. With BeBuzz and FlipShush together I have all the customization I need, and I would rather keep supporting them.

But being among the first official headless apps is pretty good work, well done!

BlackBerry 10 signed.

MrGlenn

Of couse a BeBuzz update is long overdue, if they do not show some activity soon I will switch to the apps by this developer!

poonsaloon

Anybody know if this app allows for greater profile customization?? For example, when in "Phone Calls Only" mode, I'd really like to be able to turn off the keyboard sound and lower the ring tone volume without changing the main volume for my regular profile.

Slash82

Q: Besides the ability to turn off Bluetooth, is it also able to cut other networks??

I'm a teacher and love how this works to silence my phone when I am teaching, then reverts to default. Turning Bluetooth on for the drive home is a nice feature. Great to use with the calendar, too.

Holster/no-holster profile switching would cause me to buy it. Otherwise it's not much use to me.

anyone know how these apps are getting approval for headless? didn't BB say that headless apps required 10.2.1+?

anyway, Profile Changer is great. Another cool one is OnLocation.

Nharzhool

Not that I recall...just needed 10.2. There is an application process a developer must go through to apply for Long-running Headless permission. You can ask some of the developers in the forums who have already had it approved...like Gaspertrix or NemOry.

Cylon69

Awesome!! Getting it now! I was waiting for this to happen

Is there a list of headless apps thus far? I would love to take a look at them all. Also, time for BHIVE Tasks to take advantage of the geofencing capabilities now available. Come on guys

Would love to see Color ID go headless.

Would also love the 10.2 update from AT&T. Sick of waiting......

headless music app. will be buying this one just fr the fun of it. im going to use it for pranks of someone screaming to let them out of my phone. change my fb notifications to that sound. muahahahahaha

rifka_f

So glad that headless apps are coming onstream. But the 10.2 OS requirement is really discouraging. I no longer use a PC, and am reluctant to mess with Bootcamp on my Mac. Guess I'll have to wait for TMOBILE to get its act together and release 10.2.1 officially...such a disappointment.

sinkingphoenix

Ahh, this is exactly 1 of the apps that I wanted. Might try to program it myself just for the heck of it, but I probably will buy this either way.
