We Have 1,000 2,500+ Private Beta Invites To Give Away. Details Below!

* UPDATE 2: Gotta love Private Betas! From Bitstream...

Sometime after noon Eastern today, the server handling the downloads "blew up." We are now in the process of switching over to a dedicated server we're confident can handle the demand. We appreciate everyone's patience. We expect the new server to be online by 4:00 PM Eastern today. Also, to those who have already downloaded BOLT, a big thank you. From feedback we've received just since yesterday we've already made improvements to BOLT, and our beta is only about 24 hours old.

* UPDATE: John from Bitstream sent me an email with some updated information on the Bolt Browser Private Beta....here's the update:

We were overwhelmed by requests to participate in the private beta, so this morning at 9:00 AM Eastern we cut over from a manual process to an automated one. We've already exceeded 1000 downloads on the CrackBerry code, and we're continuing to distribute download links to those who use it. The automated system still takes about 2 to 3 hours to process these requests. But if anyone has applied for a link before 9:00 AM ET and have still not received a link they can either reapply and get into the automated queue or wait until tomorrow when the backlog will be completed by hand.

Thanks to beta testers the BOLT browser has also been upgraded, just since yesterday. Yesterday we were sending links to build 0.7 and now we're sending links to 0.73. Beta testers identified some issues and they've been corrected. Most notably, people will notice that the trackball will scroll much easier now; it won't take as many scrolls to navigate. If anyone wants to get the new version to replace the old, the process is fairly simple. I haven't done it myself but I'm told they will be prompted to replace the existing install with the new version and also ask if they want to keep their current settings (which they should reply "yes").

At this moment we're not shutting down the private beta and will try to accommodate all the requests. We have shut down outreach to more so it's just those we've already engaged who are getting referral codes. We greatly appreciate the enthusiastic response from your readers, as well as the invaluable data we're collecting from their use which has already led to software improvements!

* Original Post: I received an email from Bitstream letting me know about their new J2ME mobile browser called Bolt. the Bolt mobile web browser is in Private Beta mode right now (you'll need an invite to download it) and as the name suggests is built for speed. Server side rendering makes it uber-fast and it's based on the WebKit engine and Bitstream's ThunderHawk browsing technology so the pages render accurately. Bolt does not support flash, but it will display YouTube vids which you can then launch and watch.

The Miracle on the Hudson River had me distracted from my inbox for a few hours, so it wasn't until later in the evening that I installed Bolt on my Bold and gave it a go. As you can tell from the time of this post and if you watch the video above, this smok'n hot web browser had me too excited to sleep so I figured I'd better put the time to productive use and get this post up asap. You can check out the video above for a slightly loopy hands-on overview of Bolt and for full details can view the Bolt browser fact sheet after the jump. Our buddy Doug has spent a few hours on Bolt too and has put together some initial observations that you may want to check out. Bolt is definitely still in beta... but you can call me IMPRESSED. I like speed and Bolt delivers.

Private Beta Invites: Bitstream gave us 1,000 invites to get CrackBerry Nation rocking on the beta of Bolt. If you want to give it a go, hurry on over to BoltBrowser.com and sign up using the referral code CrackBerry. Please keep in mind it is not an instant download. Once you register, Bitstream will get back to you (could take several hours) with your one time use download link. *

If you're lucky enough to download the beta, be sure to report back in the comments with your observations and findings. In the meantime, I'll start bugging the folks at Bitstream to up our # of Invites... 1,000 just isn't enough!

BOLT *Beta* BROWSER FACT SHEET

Bolt Browser
Bolt Seems to Render Pages Quickly and Accurately

Overview
BOLT is a free mobile browser that offers an uncompromised full Internet browsing experience even on entry-level mobile phones. BOLT is compatible with virtually any handset that supports Java ME (commonly referred to as J2ME); in other words BOLT works on lots of phones, even basic ones.

Rather than offering a simplified, mini-version of the Internet, BOLT provides users with an efficient, feature-rich way to enjoy full PC-style Web pages and rich media applications on all levels of mobile devices.

BOLT is built using Bitstream's award-winning and patented ThunderHawk mobile browsing technology. The BOLT browser is the fastest mobile browser available - routinely more than 25 percent faster and as much as 50 percent faster than the next fastest browser. The BOLT browser is not only fast, but it conserves resources to extend battery life and minimize data transfer. What's more, there are no requirements for web developers to optimize their websites for BOLT; developers can simply design their websites exactly as they would for a PC browser.

Pricing
BOLT is available to consumers for free.

Supported Platforms
The BOLT beta is currently available for phones that support Java ME (also referred to as J2ME). These are typically phones used by GSM carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S., and Rogers and Microcell (Fido, Cityfone) in Canada.

BOLT's underlying ThunderHawk mobile browsing technology also supports BREW, Windows Mobile and Symbian and it is planned for BOLT to support these platforms in the future.

Phone Requirements

  • J2ME MIDP2 (virtually all J2ME phones produced in the last three years)
  • BOLT supports all common/standard screen sizes
  • Approximately 150k storage space for application
  • 500k of RAM to run application

Architecture
BOLT utilizes client/server architecture to maximize the browsing experience on mobile handsets. This Client/Server approach allows BOLT to transcode multimedia to provide streaming video, compress images and other data to minimize data network usage (and therefore user cost), preserve battery life and dramatically increase the speed of web page downloads.

Geographic Availability
At this stage in the beta, the BOLT user interface is only available in English, however it can render web pages in any Western-European language.

Speed
BOLT is built for speed. The compression and rendering technology makes BOLT the fastest mobile browser available. In comprehensive speed tests that included all the popular mobile browsers, BOLT is routinely consistently 25 to 30 percent faster than the next fastest browser.

Bitstream measured download speeds of 13 popular websites including Amazon.com, CNN.com, ESPN.com and nytimes.com. The second fastest browser averaged download speeds in excess of 18 seconds across all pages. On the same phones, using the same networks, BOLT's average download speed was under 13 seconds, a full 5.5 seconds faster. For comparison, tests of a native browser on a popular handset averaged more than 2 minutes 40 seconds on these same pages, while 5 of 13 top pages wouldn't even open at all.

Quality of Website Rendering
BOLT was built using the WebKit rending engine to deliver the same web page layout as found on PC desktop browsers and includes high standards compliance such as AJAX.

Proprietary Bitstream mobile fonts and font rendering technologies improve readability, speed content delivery, and enable BOLT to fit more information into smaller screens.

Multimedia Support
At this time BOLT supports flash video. If the video has data embedded in 3gp format then it is sent directly to the device in 3gp. Otherwise the client/server architecture is used to transcode the video on the flv into 3gp format, then sent to the device. In some devices (e.g., Motorola RAZR), video is played directly in the browser window as it would be on a PC. In others (e.g., BlackBerry smartphones), the video is played through the device's native media player via the native browser. The device's capabilities determine the process used to display video.

Plug-in Support
The BOLT beta supports Ajax (except timer events) and Flash video. BOLT does not support Flash.

Full Page Display
Full pages are rendered on the server exactly as they are on a PC, and compressed by a factor of 23:1 before being sent to BOLT on a user's mobile phone. The page information is transmitted in a compact transport format, containing the information about anything that may appear on the web page (e.g., text, images, UI, etc.). The client receives this information and renders the pages and UI elements.

Navigation and Display Features

  • A simple keystroke toggles a patented split screen browsing mode to allow for quick navigation across a large web page (see below)
  • Easy keystroke navigation, including: 2 - up, 8 - down, 4 - left, 6 - right
  • Works with native navigation features (e.g., trackball, rocker switch, etc.)
  • Dynamic content adaptation automatically fits text to the width of any screen
  • SmartBar auto-completes URL entry based on history
  • Easy zooming (see below)
  • Pop up blocker
  • Click-to-call phone numbers from websites
  • Text and visible region of web pages rendered first, speeding content delivery
  • Proprietary Bitstream fonts and font rendering engine improve readability and usability

Zooming
BOLT features five levels of magnification and smoothly scales text and images.

BOLT's patented split screen mode features a rectangular magnifier floating over a zoomed out mini-map of the entire Web page on the top 2/3 of the screen and a magnified view of the content under the magnifier on the bottom 1/3 of the screen. Content beneath the magnifier is always readable and is selectable with a single click. This technique provides users far more utility than mini-map features in other mobile browsers.

Bookmarking & Favorites
BOLT supports bookmarking, history (by day/session), single click access to recent history (hold back button for 2 seconds), and RSS subscription.

Easy Search
One click Google search is integrated into URL entry bar.

Content & File Downloading
Images and files can be downloaded to device through BOLT which can then be shared using email.

Requirements for Web Developers
Although BOLT can be detected by websites, there are no special requirements for developers to optimize their websites for BOLT. Web developers can design sites exactly as they do for PCs.

I think the speed is phenomenal, it far surpasses the preloaded browser. Navigation with the cursor is a bit of a chore in my opinion. Possibly even at the Beta stage it makes the preloaded browser a dinosaur.

VERY HAPPY AND SURPRISED WITH IT. ONLY A FEW PROBLEMS THE MOUSE WHEN BROWSING ON THE STORM :(. BESIDES THAT, JUST AMAZING! I HOPE TO SEE THIS TO BE ON ALL PHONES IN THE FUTURE

PS;I FEEL SO BAD, BUT I SIGNED UP FOR THE BETA 4 TIMES. EACH DOWNLOAD IS A 1 TIME USE. I HAVE 3 EXTRA COPIES FOR ANYONE THAT NEEDS! I'LL FORWARD IT TO YOU, JUST EMAIL ME AT Zackz115@yahoo.com

Given the extremely large number of users that wanted to try BOLT, we experienced some  delays in processing key requests.  We have worked through the weekend and emails are on their way to you. You can also ensure a key by filing our the form again. Bitstream support is giving their utmost attention to all requests.
Thanks,

I was able to get a download for the Curve and the Storm within minutes of my requests this morning. On the first one I did not put in Crackberry as the sponsor. I still got the link. For me it did not work well on my Storm (on a BES, using .86). More cumbersome than Opera Mini is on the Storm. If and when they write a version for the storm I would give it another shot for now Bye Bye.
On the Curve it was much better, but for me it performed no better than Opera Mini and in fact has many of the same short cuts and features. Other than the neat split screen feature, not much difference. Someone needs to write flash for one of these browser and we can all rejoice!!

By: tizomcat | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 20:32

I read the update where they said that the trackball scrolling had been fixed...
...I would hate to see what it was like before, b/c I am running build .73, and I am still experiencing VERY slow scrolling on my curve 8310(OS 4.5)
Other than that, I think that this blows every other browser that I have ever used on a mobile device out of the water

By: boltsupport | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 00:25

Scrolling speed and control (especially on the trackball) is an issue that is dependent upon the device.  As this is an area that we would like improve on in our next releases, please let us know if you are having any scrolling issues and which Blackberry device you are using.  Also, if you were lucky enough to be part of the first wave of adopters, you may see some improvement in scrolling if you download a new release at http://www.boltbrowser.com/download.html.  We did make some improvements based on initial comments received during the first day of launch.  We also have faster scrolling using 2 -up, 8-down, 4 -left and 6-right as these keys are not device dependent.

All I can say is DAMN! This thing is fast. Using it on a 9530, and it makes the BB browser and Opera Mini look like Netscape from 1997 on a dialup connection LOL.

By: smknv8s | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 23:13

Had to email support. I keep getting the download faild error. I never tried clicking on the links on my desktop just copy and pasted on my BB. All of the other links say that they have expired. Anyone have a idea before they get back to me?????

sign up for Bolt from CrackBerry got it sent to my Storm in seconds, haven't downloaded it yet.

By: samsams | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 04:36

Wow, instantly received email! Now let's see if the download link also is that bolt-fast...

By: samsams | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 06:12

Thx CB and ppl from Bolt. Really fast browser. And considering this is only the beta...
FYI: I kicked out Opera!

By: omgim50 | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 11:55

My convenience keys don't work, changed them to different functions and still no go, also the escape/back key doesn't work when I am browsing. Anyone else come across this issue? T-Mo Curve 8320 Other than that it's nice and fast. Did a battery pull which helped to smooth out the scrolling.

By: Storm9530BES (not verified) | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 12:57

I got my copy (.73) after a couple hours of waiting on the day it was announced, but I think my IT policy is restricting its use just like Opera. Doesn't work (not Bolt's fault). Would love to try this out!!! I am running .86 on the 9530.

By: tritan | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 15:17

what happend to precentral.com I don't see it?

By: tylavin | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 15:42

This is my second post on this so far, I have used it a bit, it is a lot easier to move around than I expected, however I dont know how I feel about the pointer (I'm aware that with the storm, a lot of the browsers features are not going to be functional.) I also like how you can adjust the font size...the large reads just fine although on some wehbsites, I needed to have a larger font. This app is still pretty buggy, it crashes when you try to go to some sites, I was able to save a few of my favorites. I will use both for now, hopefully someone out there (Mozilla?) will have the solution for a much better mobile browser

By: Anonymous (not verified) | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 17:19

Promising, but even scrolling is very slow (so far, tested on my Blackberry 8800). Mobile View also involves a lot of positioning at first, which is pretty annoying as, as has already been stated, scrolling itself is very slow.

Opera Mini is WAY faster (at scrolling around, including scrolling down)- at least on my BB. That is, it still needs a lot of work. For the time being, I'd prefer Opera Mini.

Hi,

Thank you for your interest in Bitstream's BOLT browser technology.

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience. We will try to fix this in next releases, in the mean time you can try this solution on your device.

In order to use BOLT browser on your Blackberry device, you must first establish a Blackberry Access Point Name (APN). An APN is a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or high-speed connection provided by your telecom operator. If your phone is not set up with an APN, you may add one
manually.

To add an APN:

1. Where is the APN:

- on most of the Blackberry devices, APN is in Options -> TCP
- on 71XX series BlackBerry devices, APN is in Tools -> Settings -> TCP
- on 87XX series BlackBerry devices, APN is in Settings -> Options ->
Advanced Options -> TCP

2. Fill the APN field
3. Fill the Username/Password field
4. Once you have saved the APN information, you should reboot your Blackberry device by removing and reinserting the battery.

Please note that APN settings are carrier specific and can differ depending on the carrier service being used.

For more information about APN and its setup, please see the documentation for your Blackberry device or contact your network operator or service provider.

We're listening to all the feedback to make BOLT even better, and we appreciate all that feedback.

Thanks,

Bolt's agonizingly slow cursor renders it useless on my 8330. Deleted it - will try again on a later release.

We wanted to take a moment to extend our personal thanks for all of the blog users on crackberry.com that have tested our BOLT browser. BOLT is our latest entry into the mobile browsing space and this is the first time that we have launched a private beta through the use of blogs. The response has been outstanding! As you may have seen, we have received so many responses in a few short days that it overloaded our registration process. On Friday, we were able to build an automated process that continued to be stressed by the sheer volume of requests happening every minute. The great news is that we were able to expand the number of invites so many more of you could participate.

We have received countless emails providing extremely valuable feedback, feature requests, and favorable comments on the experience. The private beta build was created to allow people with J2ME phones to browse and for us to get real world feedback. Given the monumental response from Blackberry users, we are already working on Blackberry-specific improvements recommended by bloggers to greatly improve the experience on Blackberry devices given the demand. An example of this is improving the use of specific hardware keys found on Blackberries. As many of us are Blackberry users, we completely understand the benefit such improvements will provide.

Although many reported that BOLT is very fast, we also heard that some users were having speed issues. Earlier today, we made some improvements to our backend servers to improve the speed of delivery of pages to you so pages should load even faster than before. If you were having difficulty earlier, we would encourage you to test again and see what happens. Then let us know if this has improved the speed on your device.

We encourage you to continue to provide your feedback to us either by posting or by sending an email to support@boltbrowser.com for support issues. You can also email contact@boltbrowser.com for any other matters. Our team is making every effort to respond to all of your inquiries as soon as possible. As you can imagine, this is keeping us quite busy given the volume of email we are getting. Over the coming days, you may also see posts from our team on certain technical issues. Although it will be difficult to respond to everyone who has posted, we will post information for everyone to see on common issues.

We hope that none of you were unable to participate due to our launch issues, as that was not our intention. If you have not received your software, please sign up again at www.boltbrowser.com and you should receive the download very shortly.

Thank you for being a part of our private beta launch! We look forward to hearing your feedback! You are the most valuable part of our beta process!

With your help, we hope to make BOLT the best mobile browser on the market today.

Anna and the BOLT team

This is way worse than Opera on my Curve. So slow and inaccurate with the pointing device. I tried to uninstall the browser and the icon won't go away. Truly sucks!

By: Miz.Michele | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 23:38

I couldn't connect at first. Then, all of a sudden, it connected. I like it. I was never a fan of Opera and used the native Browser. It's quite fast. I have a Pearl and it is a little weird scrolling. I can deal with that through for the speed it gives. Thanks for letting us know about the Beta.

By: bb_flyboy | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 05:23

well its not looking good on my 8120, using the latest beta and the trackball navigation is very poor and getting to teh menu is next to impossible, it flickers badly so you cant realy see it...have emailed my feedback so will see what happens next

By: bkop | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 05:25

okay a little off topic i guess, but kev, who did the battery cover for your bold?? it's freaking awesome!(how late am i on know about this btw? lol)

almost makes me want a bold instead of the new curve(whenever they hit the big V)

By: EndoRush | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 09:38

Ok I downloaded the unsigned version to my 8100 and can open the app but it reads "Error: Internet not available. Check network services." Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

i recieved an extra download today if anyone is interested. it is for the storm. i have been using bolt since it came out and it's freakin fast! just reply to my post with email if you are interested and i can send it your way.

RIM should seriously consider collaborating with Bitstream on this one and developing a new default browser.

By: Pierrohhh | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 12:38

i really like it. but the cursor rendering should be a lot quicker for me to actually start using this over the default browser. i like it a lot more the the oem browser but i would like fluid cursor rendering

By: Pierrohhh | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 12:38

By: griffin | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 14:37

Same as above it loads quickly but the cursor is kinda weird. seems like cursor should go up down and diagonal like in other apps.

By: wcmarchese | Date: Mon, 01/19/2009 - 16:09

For sake of speed, ill cut through being formal too much.
1: the cursor on my Curve 8330 moves very slow-though, for some reason when a screen is loading it moves fast. But its always slow.

2: of course, you knew this was coming-Flash support-at least GIF support for now, if Flash is in the works.

3: more video support.

4: expanded zoom feature. I love that I can see the words even in large mode, but zooming in for articles when my eyes start to hurt is becoming a pain. Maybe some easier zooming key, so when I'm done reading I can zoom back to regular (large).

Issues: here are some issues.

1: I notice that if I get an error code, or if it doesn't let me go through the first time, if I keep trying, I can get through.

2: typing is excruciatingly slow.

This is all I can think of for now, as I am on my blackberry's small screen in the snow in NY lol. More thoughts later.

By the way, I'm probably deleting my Opera, this browser's awesome!

If this browser keeps working like it has so far, I'll never be able to use the native browser again. Its a little weird using with a 9530 Storm, since the interface seems to be directed more towards a Blackberry with a trac ball. Other than that... its amazingly fast.

Thanks,
A Crackberry.com User

didn't work

Got the link from a friend of mine that was watching the forums and picked it up from a fellow crackberry addict. Thank you crackberry, the guy who gave away his extra code, and of course the good friend of mine that was looking out for me.

As far as Bolt goes it's very nice to see the pages in full especially the cnn.com's and nytimes.com's. Very very nice.

I download in on my Blackberry Bold. but when i try to open a website it stop at 20% nothing happen after that, no webpage loaded no rendering. sound like a good but still need some work. I hope this is like the skyfire browser but for the BlackBerry.

got my donwload link in 5 seconds, installed it and within minutes went back to the default BB browser. the bolt is anything but fast. the biggest complaint is that when you enter a URL, you have to hit the BB button and click GO, instead of just hitting the enter key. small issue for sure, but it drives me nuts.

The browser itself is pretty fast when it comes to loading, but I seriously can't deal with a so-slow-it's-borderline-unresponsive trackball/typing UI. It took me longer to type in Youtube.com than to load a video, and on an 8110 that's saying something.

I'm going to switch back to Opera, it may not be perfect, but at least it's responsive

Wow. I am VERY impressed. Running this on my 8330 on Verizon. It blows away the Blackberry Browser AND Opera mini in terms of rendering time. I cannot believe how much faster it is. A few more Blackberry specific tweaks and you folks will have the HOTTEST browser on the market! Just get the trackball navigation flowing more smoothly.
