We Have 1,000 2,500+ Private Beta Invites To Give Away. Details Below!
* UPDATE 2: Gotta love Private Betas! From Bitstream...
Sometime after noon Eastern today, the server handling the downloads "blew up." We are now in the process of switching over to a dedicated server we're confident can handle the demand. We appreciate everyone's patience. We expect the new server to be online by 4:00 PM Eastern today. Also, to those who have already downloaded BOLT, a big thank you. From feedback we've received just since yesterday we've already made improvements to BOLT, and our beta is only about 24 hours old.
* UPDATE: John from Bitstream sent me an email with some updated information on the Bolt Browser Private Beta....here's the update:
We were overwhelmed by requests to participate in the private beta, so this morning at 9:00 AM Eastern we cut over from a manual process to an automated one. We've already exceeded 1000 downloads on the CrackBerry code, and we're continuing to distribute download links to those who use it. The automated system still takes about 2 to 3 hours to process these requests. But if anyone has applied for a link before 9:00 AM ET and have still not received a link they can either reapply and get into the automated queue or wait until tomorrow when the backlog will be completed by hand.
Thanks to beta testers the BOLT browser has also been upgraded, just since yesterday. Yesterday we were sending links to build 0.7 and now we're sending links to 0.73. Beta testers identified some issues and they've been corrected. Most notably, people will notice that the trackball will scroll much easier now; it won't take as many scrolls to navigate. If anyone wants to get the new version to replace the old, the process is fairly simple. I haven't done it myself but I'm told they will be prompted to replace the existing install with the new version and also ask if they want to keep their current settings (which they should reply "yes").
At this moment we're not shutting down the private beta and will try to accommodate all the requests. We have shut down outreach to more so it's just those we've already engaged who are getting referral codes. We greatly appreciate the enthusiastic response from your readers, as well as the invaluable data we're collecting from their use which has already led to software improvements!
* Original Post: I received an email from Bitstream letting me know about their new J2ME mobile browser called Bolt. the Bolt mobile web browser is in Private Beta mode right now (you'll need an invite to download it) and as the name suggests is built for speed. Server side rendering makes it uber-fast and it's based on the WebKit engine and Bitstream's ThunderHawk browsing technology so the pages render accurately. Bolt does not support flash, but it will display YouTube vids which you can then launch and watch.
The Miracle on the Hudson River had me distracted from my inbox for a few hours, so it wasn't until later in the evening that I installed Bolt on my Bold and gave it a go. As you can tell from the time of this post and if you watch the video above, this smok'n hot web browser had me too excited to sleep so I figured I'd better put the time to productive use and get this post up asap. You can check out the video above for a slightly loopy hands-on overview of Bolt and for full details can view the Bolt browser fact sheet after the jump. Our buddy Doug has spent a few hours on Bolt too and has put together some initial observations that you may want to check out. Bolt is definitely still in beta... but you can call me IMPRESSED. I like speed and Bolt delivers.
Private Beta Invites: Bitstream gave us 1,000 invites to get CrackBerry Nation rocking on the beta of Bolt. If you want to give it a go, hurry on over to BoltBrowser.com and sign up using the referral code CrackBerry. Please keep in mind it is not an instant download. Once you register, Bitstream will get back to you (could take several hours) with your one time use download link. *
If you're lucky enough to download the beta, be sure to report back in the comments with your observations and findings. In the meantime, I'll start bugging the folks at Bitstream to up our # of Invites... 1,000 just isn't enough!
BOLT *Beta* BROWSER FACT SHEET
Bolt Seems to Render Pages Quickly and Accurately
Overview
BOLT is a free mobile browser that offers an uncompromised full Internet browsing experience even on entry-level mobile phones. BOLT is compatible with virtually any handset that supports Java ME (commonly referred to as J2ME); in other words BOLT works on lots of phones, even basic ones.
Rather than offering a simplified, mini-version of the Internet, BOLT provides users with an efficient, feature-rich way to enjoy full PC-style Web pages and rich media applications on all levels of mobile devices.
BOLT is built using Bitstream's award-winning and patented ThunderHawk mobile browsing technology. The BOLT browser is the fastest mobile browser available - routinely more than 25 percent faster and as much as 50 percent faster than the next fastest browser. The BOLT browser is not only fast, but it conserves resources to extend battery life and minimize data transfer. What's more, there are no requirements for web developers to optimize their websites for BOLT; developers can simply design their websites exactly as they would for a PC browser.
Pricing
BOLT is available to consumers for free.
Supported Platforms
The BOLT beta is currently available for phones that support Java ME (also referred to as J2ME). These are typically phones used by GSM carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S., and Rogers and Microcell (Fido, Cityfone) in Canada.
BOLT's underlying ThunderHawk mobile browsing technology also supports BREW, Windows Mobile and Symbian and it is planned for BOLT to support these platforms in the future.
Phone Requirements
- J2ME MIDP2 (virtually all J2ME phones produced in the last three years)
- BOLT supports all common/standard screen sizes
- Approximately 150k storage space for application
- 500k of RAM to run application
Architecture
BOLT utilizes client/server architecture to maximize the browsing experience on mobile handsets. This Client/Server approach allows BOLT to transcode multimedia to provide streaming video, compress images and other data to minimize data network usage (and therefore user cost), preserve battery life and dramatically increase the speed of web page downloads.
Geographic Availability
At this stage in the beta, the BOLT user interface is only available in English, however it can render web pages in any Western-European language.
Speed
BOLT is built for speed. The compression and rendering technology makes BOLT the fastest mobile browser available. In comprehensive speed tests that included all the popular mobile browsers, BOLT is routinely consistently 25 to 30 percent faster than the next fastest browser.
Bitstream measured download speeds of 13 popular websites including Amazon.com, CNN.com, ESPN.com and nytimes.com. The second fastest browser averaged download speeds in excess of 18 seconds across all pages. On the same phones, using the same networks, BOLT's average download speed was under 13 seconds, a full 5.5 seconds faster. For comparison, tests of a native browser on a popular handset averaged more than 2 minutes 40 seconds on these same pages, while 5 of 13 top pages wouldn't even open at all.
Quality of Website Rendering
BOLT was built using the WebKit rending engine to deliver the same web page layout as found on PC desktop browsers and includes high standards compliance such as AJAX.
Proprietary Bitstream mobile fonts and font rendering technologies improve readability, speed content delivery, and enable BOLT to fit more information into smaller screens.
Multimedia Support
At this time BOLT supports flash video. If the video has data embedded in 3gp format then it is sent directly to the device in 3gp. Otherwise the client/server architecture is used to transcode the video on the flv into 3gp format, then sent to the device. In some devices (e.g., Motorola RAZR), video is played directly in the browser window as it would be on a PC. In others (e.g., BlackBerry smartphones), the video is played through the device's native media player via the native browser. The device's capabilities determine the process used to display video.
Plug-in Support
The BOLT beta supports Ajax (except timer events) and Flash video. BOLT does not support Flash.
Full Page Display
Full pages are rendered on the server exactly as they are on a PC, and compressed by a factor of 23:1 before being sent to BOLT on a user's mobile phone. The page information is transmitted in a compact transport format, containing the information about anything that may appear on the web page (e.g., text, images, UI, etc.). The client receives this information and renders the pages and UI elements.
Navigation and Display Features
- A simple keystroke toggles a patented split screen browsing mode to allow for quick navigation across a large web page (see below)
- Easy keystroke navigation, including: 2 - up, 8 - down, 4 - left, 6 - right
- Works with native navigation features (e.g., trackball, rocker switch, etc.)
- Dynamic content adaptation automatically fits text to the width of any screen
- SmartBar auto-completes URL entry based on history
- Easy zooming (see below)
- Pop up blocker
- Click-to-call phone numbers from websites
- Text and visible region of web pages rendered first, speeding content delivery
- Proprietary Bitstream fonts and font rendering engine improve readability and usability
Zooming
BOLT features five levels of magnification and smoothly scales text and images.
BOLT's patented split screen mode features a rectangular magnifier floating over a zoomed out mini-map of the entire Web page on the top 2/3 of the screen and a magnified view of the content under the magnifier on the bottom 1/3 of the screen. Content beneath the magnifier is always readable and is selectable with a single click. This technique provides users far more utility than mini-map features in other mobile browsers.
Bookmarking & Favorites
BOLT supports bookmarking, history (by day/session), single click access to recent history (hold back button for 2 seconds), and RSS subscription.
Easy Search
One click Google search is integrated into URL entry bar.
Content & File Downloading
Images and files can be downloaded to device through BOLT which can then be shared using email.
Requirements for Web Developers
Although BOLT can be detected by websites, there are no special requirements for developers to optimize their websites for BOLT. Web developers can design sites exactly as they do for PCs.

got new link and now it works , very nice pretty fast
Much, much better. Had to wait 2 hours before the confirmation email came in, but definitely worth the wait. I was able to load the full version of Crackberry.com within seconds, as compared to sometimes minutes, on my 9530. Entering information is a breeze, and when the browser is optimized for speed (lowering image quality, etc.) this thing truly flies. Now if only my 9530 worked as well...
Received my link in about 1 minute. Took only about 2 minutes to install. It has worked great so far.
The speed is great, everything loads so fast. I do miss highlighting and then clicking on the browser it would make navigating on tabs and links so much more accurate than trying to scroll around the links you don't want to click on. I also miss the double tap zoom like the stock browser. As far as not having a back button, a fast double click on the BB menu button does the job for now. If it's tweaked a little more for the Storm it would be perfect.
Thank you for your comment. Â There is a zoom shortcut 5 (in some device you may need to press ALT +5). Â Our engineering team has seen your suggestion for key strokes and is already working on improving usability for Blackberry devices, including the Storm.
Thanks,

Sorry about the double post
hi all. i finally got my links, but after following the directions exclusively, i get, "Error: some issue in the query: url expired.
I get the same thing. Anyone figure a way around this?
Hi,
Thanks for your interest in Bitstream's BOLT browser technology.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience. The key is one-time use only so if you accidently hit it within your email program, you may find the key unusable. Â If you have this problem, please sign up again at http://www.boltbrowser.com/download.html and you will receive a new key. Please note that all urls are one time usable
Thanks,

tried to install it using 3 different invitations to no avail.the only one that I was able to install was the unsigned version and on the rest of versions I get a URL expired message.when I run BOLT it says that there's no internet connection.I have a att bold running on t-mobile and I don't know if may be this is the reason why I can't run the BOLT application.anyhow would have to wait for some technical expertise from someone,in the meantime I stay tuned
I am also with T-mo and using an unlocked AT&T Bold. Same results as you.
It says, plain as day, to use the unsigned version on a Blackberry phone.
Got link immediately but DL failed with this error:
907 Invalid COD HTTP Error 406: Not Acceptable
??
I just downloaded it about 15 minutes ago and have completely forgotten about the Blackberry browser. This is probably the best browser I've ever used. It's way better then skyfire. The only things I do wish they would add is maybe the ability to zoom for users who have a touch screen device and a tool bar that will give users the ability to browser a little bit more efficiently without having to constantly open the menu. Other then that great browser and I look forward to more improvements and newer versions.
luv the broswer my friends are amazed
Kudos to the Bolt folks for opening up the beta to all of we Crackberrians who want it. Have to admit I was depressed when it looked like I was too late this morning only to find out this afternoon they allowed us all to get it. Well done guys, great customer service! Thanks also to Kevin for his lobbying on our behalf, as always.
I have a favorable response for my first trials with the brower. Looking foward to using it in the coming days.
I'm using it on my 8820 and it loads amazingly fast but the navigation is snail like, hopefully this is just for the beta.
Scrolling speed and control (especially on the trackball) is an issue that is dependent upon the device. Â As this is an area that we would like improve on in our next releases, please let us know if you are having any scrolling issues and which Blackberry device you are using. Â Also, if you were lucky enough to be part of the first wave of adopters, you may see some improvement in scrolling if you download a new release at http://www.boltbrowser.com/download.html. Â We did make some improvements based on initial comments received during the first day of launch. Â We also have faster scrolling using 2 -up, 8-down, 4 -left and 6-right as these keys are not device dependent.
Thanks,

no issues loading - started right up with no errors the first time. pages do load fast. logged into my web version of outlook and navigated through my calendar and inbox. navigation (panning) works better with the keyboard than with the wheel (choppy).. not used to the zooming yet..
Thank you!! I like it better than Opera Mini!! It is faster and works better on my phone than Opera Mini!!

So, I have used it Bolt a little more since I've been home. I tested BBs all day today and now i am testing them again at home. YAY! lol. Anyway, a few points to touch on:
As I stated before, when you switch from landscape to portrait and vice versa, it reloads the page. but, not only that, it reloads and goes back to the top of the page. Therefore, you have to scroll all the way back down to get back to where you were. Which leads me to the next known issue.
Touching a link without clicking on it: While on crackberry, i was scrolling through all of these comments. 4 out of 5 times, i could not make it all the way to the bottom without touching a link and it taking me to another page. This would be okay if the escape key worked and you could click it real quick to stop like in the BB Browser. One time I was able to hit menu and click back and it took me back to where i was. This only happened once.
When I click back, it takes me to the top of the previous page instead of putting me back to where i was.
Hyper links are very small. you have more of a chance scrolling and hitting it by chance than trying to actually click it. Especially if you have any size to your thumbs. lol. It took me 6-7 trys to hit page 5 at the bottom of the crackberry screen.
I think this browser needs a home key that functions like the WWW key in the BB browser. A key that takes you back to the first Bolt screen. I did figure out thought, for Storms, you can show the keyboard and use the keys to navigate around and use the hot keys to type a url or take you to favorites or history. This was great, BUT, this makes the viewable screen very small. A little tool bar at the bottom that you can hide and show like the BB browser would be nice.
Cannot figure out how to organize or delete some of the favorites i do not use
Was able to log into Orchard Bank, but not Capital One or Chase. Not sure of any other financial sites, or account sites, such as Gas, Electric, Cable, etc.
Okay so this is a little long like I am some kind of professional reviewer or something, like that guy who bashed the Storm to death a few days before it came out.
Anyway, I do like the browser. A few bugs could be a little better (for ME, in my opinion). A lot of these may be small to others, but just some things i've noticed.
All in all, I would probably use this browser for some things and the BB browser for others. There are already apps for most of the sites I use, ESPN, Viiago, Myspace, Facebook, CNN, Crackberry, Chase, and some others.
Okay I'm done. sorry everyone. I never get to beta test anything. lol
I applied-got download email with in a minute. Downloaded unsigned version to my Storm 9530 running 4.7.0.76 (platform 4.0.0.96)
Opened BOLT, it prompts me with "The application BOLT has attempted to access us.mysmallplanet.com. Would you like to allow this? Y/N. I click Yes, it opens the browser. All I see is the address bar, History/Favorites/Feeds tabs & Tell a friend icon. I click on address and type in any URL and it starts to download the page and then just stops. Nothing happens.
I have read a lot of replies that state people have it running on their Storm. Can anyone help?
Thx
P.
PS. have already posted it on the BOLT feedback site.
Hi,
Thank you for your interest in Bitstream's BOLT browser technology.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience. We will try to fix this in next releases, in the mean time you can try this solution on your device.
In order to use BOLT browser on your Blackberry device, you must first establish a Blackberry Access Point Name (APN). An APN is a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or high-speed connection provided by your telecom operator. If your phone is not set up with an APN, you may add one
manually.
To add an APN:
1. Where is the APN:
- on most of the Blackberry devices, APN is in Options -> TCP
- on 71XX series BlackBerry devices, APN is in Tools -> Settings -> TCP
- on 87XX series BlackBerry devices, APN is in Settings -> Options ->
Advanced Options -> TCP
2. Fill the APN field
3. Fill the Username/Password field
4. Once you have saved the APN information, you should reboot your Blackberry device by removing and reinserting the battery.
Please note that APN settings are carrier specific and can differ depending on the carrier service being used.
For more information about APN and its setup, please see the documentation for your Blackberry device or contact your network operator or service provider.
We're listening to all the feedback to make BOLT even better, and we appreciate all that feedback.

i get that it's a beta, but dang. they have to improve the speed of this thing. it lags!
Are there any special instructions for Unlocked BB storm users running on T-mobile.
When i launch the app it asks me if I i want to connect to us.mysmallplanet.com. When the app loads it says no internet conection on the bottom of the screen. I tried adjusting my TC/IP settings by removing wap.voicestream.com and replacing it with intermet.com.
No luck.
Can anyone Help?
to pratik.patel and props:
try this:
from the main menu go to Options > Advanced Options > Applications > Bolt
then click on the BB menu button and choose Edit Permissions
make sure you choose Allow for all
Thanks for the suggestion, but I had already ensured that the permissions were set to allow. While reading the rest of the replies, I too can verify that I have the same 20% page load and then nothing, issue.
I got my link instantly! Tried the browser and it's no joke...it's blazing fast! This looks to be my regular browser if all goes well. Thanks again to CrackBerry for all the useful information!! Great Job!
It's choppy when using the trackball, but using the 2-4-6-8 keys isn't bad. I'm gonna play with it a little more.
I was so pumped to try it out, but to my dismay it runs horribly slow on my curve. The websites still load uber fast. Also when I hit the blackberry button for the menu it appears for a fraction of a second and then disappears. I guess I will have to wait until the final version comes out. :(
Thank you for your comment. Our engineering team has seen your suggestion for key strokes and is already working on improving usability for Blackberry devices, including the Storm.

I was able to download the bolt browser without any issues, but I can't seem to get the browser to actually load pages. It goes to 20% loaded and then suddenly stops loading. I am going to try it again when I get home but so far, I'm not having any luck with this browser.
the same here! :-(
It only works with wi-fi on my Bold.
Just downloaded the Bolt beta and it worked well on the Storm. The only issues are navigation is a bit harder and menu options are kind of small but overall it worked very well ... and it is quite fast!
My first test was the CrackBerry.com site. On the storms native browser it took forever to load, and it looked like crap. Bolt rendered it perfectly. This is an awesome browser. I can't wait to see the final release!
I installed it, got it to work. It's ok. Did a practical test accessing the desktop version of UPS.com on Bolt and Mini-Opera. Mini-Opera won hands down on usability and speed. I'll try Bolt again when it matures ...
It didnt send me the link when i typed in Crackberry but I had read somewhere that if you used Crunch it would work that way too so thats what i used and no sooner did i click submit my berry started vibrating...thanks bolt...so far i like it but for some reason my pointer is a bit delayed...anyone else having this issue?
Thanks for the help.
I got my link and am downloading the unsigned version as I speak.
do u have a bold or a curve... im wondering if anyone got this to work on there curve
it's takes a while to get going, but once the page renders it looks really good. As others have mentioned, curser movement is slow but using the hot keys they suggest speeds things up. Pretty cool browser, especially for a beta.
UPDATE: this morning it seems to be working MUCH faster...impressed!!
I installed it on my bold, all seems good pages load quick and im in edge not 3g area. over wifi it's faster, but if i enable wifi in the browser on the wifi setting it will give me an error that it couldn't connect to the internet.. but if i disable I can then surf again..
I find trying to scroll very jumpy on the browser. I do like the opening screen, just need to play with this more as well.
I have a Storm running .75
Things I love
Very fast, no rendering issues, looks great
Things I would like to see
Tabs (I dig the feature on the Iphone and use conctantly on my pc), better interaction for Storm (make use of surepress, back button, double tap for zoom)
Overall very impressed for a Beta. Make it optimized for Storm and easier to click and zoom and we will have the best browser I have ever used and one I would recommend to everyone
Thank you for your comment. Â There is a zoom shortcut 5 (in some device you may need to press ALT +5). Â Our engineering team has seen your suggestion for key strokes and is already working on improving usability for Blackberry devices, including the Storm.

Menu screen won't stay "up". Trackball not responsive. How do I get the upgrades?
Hmmm. I got the unsigned version and when I open, it says internet not connected. I tried turning wifi off and still can't connect....bummer! I've got a pearl 8120.
PS I did get the link almost immediately.
