Press Release

BlackBerry 10 Launch Event to be Held on January 30th, 2013

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 12, 2012) - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) announced today that it will hold its BlackBerry 10 launch event on January 30th, 2013. The event will happen simultaneously in multiple countries around the world. This day will mark the official launch of its new platform - BlackBerry 10, as well as the unveiling of the first two BlackBerry 10 smartphones. Details on the smartphones and their availability will be announced at the event.

"In building BlackBerry 10, we set out to create a truly unique mobile computing experience that constantly adapts to your needs. Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features combined with a best in class browser, a rich application ecosystem, and cutting-edge multimedia capabilities. All of this will be integrated into a user experience - the BlackBerry Flow - that is unlike any smartphone on the market today," said Thorsten Heins, President and CEO of Research In Motion. "Thanks to our strong partnerships with global carriers and a growing ecosystem of developers, we believe our customers will have the best experience possible with BlackBerry 10. We are looking forward to getting BlackBerry 10 in the hands of our customers around the world."

BlackBerry 10 will offer a large catalog of the leading applications from across the globe and across all categories, including Games, Productivity, Social, Lifestyle and Leisure, Multimedia and Published Content, as well as applications designed for business and enterprise use.

The BlackBerry 10 platform has recently achieved FIPS 140-2 certification, which means that government agencies will be able to deploy BlackBerry 10 smartphones and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 as soon as it is available. This marks the first time BlackBerry products have been certified ahead of their launch. In addition, RIM recently announced that BlackBerry 10 smartphones have now entered more than 50 carrier labs with many more entries expected in the coming weeks.

Some key features of the new BlackBerry 10 devices already unveiled recently include:

BlackBerry Flow and BlackBerry Hub
BlackBerry Flow is a new user experience that allows seamless navigation across open applications and the BlackBerry Hub. All messages, notifications, feeds, and calendar events come into the BlackBerry Hub and no matter what the user is doing with the device, with a simple gesture, they can peek into the Hub at any time.

BlackBerry Keyboard
The BlackBerry Keyboard learns how you write and adapts to how you type so you can write faster and more accurately, giving you the kind of legendary typing experience that only BlackBerry can deliver.

BlackBerry Balance
BlackBerry Balance offers the most elegant way to satisfy both customer and corporate needs without compromising on either. With BlackBerry Balance, personal apps and information are kept separate from work data, and the customer can switch from their personal to work profile with a simple gesture. The work profile is fully encrypted and secure, enabling organizations to protect their content and applications, while at the same time letting customers get the most out of their smartphone for their personal use.

Press Release: BlackBerry 10 Launch Event to be Held January 30th, 2013!!!!!!!!!!

yaaaaaaaaaaay How exciting can't wait. Two days after my bday not bad!! I shall have enough bday cash lol!!

#BB10 FTW!

My Birthday is Jan 25, wife's and son's Feb 12 and daughters Feb 20.. Sounds like new phones for all in the New Year!

It's going to be Lengen.................... wait for it............ DARY!

GOOD NEWS this aint vaporware. That extra delay probably helped hugely in fine tunning and building the eco system waiting for things is not so bad better then rushed halfbaked goods and whinning.

Already got a limited edition steal of a fire sale PB.BrIng on the phone I still rock a 8590 proudly and have used no other phone so im pumped for this been waiting for RIM to step up.And now we are here approaching the throne seat with bridge tech good times to come.

Great IDEA! Get some of that Christmas money this season.... Only thing is, the majority of the public knows very little of what bb10 will bring unlike us. So they will unlikely per-order in numbers without seeing it first.

congratulations!! ^^

now as to be realistic, if there be pre-order or loyalty discounts, those who have birthday in launch date should be the ones who get it :D

also all of us here who always loyal to blackberry :p

I'm completely intimidated but curious about Blackberries because they're so different. I'm in Austin and have 4GLTE service with AT&T; does BB "run" on this? If I got a BB10 in January, would I be able to take photos of my salon clients and file the photos along with tips on how I created that look? No camera is mentioned. I know it's primarily a phone, but somebody clue me in: how does it compare to all other smartphones? thanks.

It so much more than just a phone -- it may be the smartest phone yet. Yes, there is a camera (with wonderful technology) and everything else you'll need.

Juanita, Different is Good! I can't really speak on the 4GLTE/AT&T service etc. But I can say if you make the decision to join #TeamBB you will be more than satisfied. In comparison to other smartphones it's the smartest one! My best advice for you would be to just wait til it comes out and play with it in the store. Yes, it will have a camera. No matter what anyone tells you about a phone, YOU have to make the decision, YOU will be the one using it.

if the leaked specification is true, then it will have LTE and 8mp camera with flash, 1080p rec at 30fps and 2mp front facing camera at 720p.

you can read the full leaked specification here:

Those are therumoured Aristo specs. That phone will be coming out in the summer AFTER the L & N series phones

ah right lol. meh, i guess RIM won't let the L&N specs out but keep us wondering by leaking the aristo spec sheet :p i hope the L&N specs are not far from aristo's specs XD

@Juanita....I'm in Houston and was in Austin just this past weekend. Also a photographer...I can tell you with absolute certainty that you will be able to use BB10 effectively on AT&T. I currently have and use the BB Torch and BB Playbook for taking and/or editing pics. BB10 will be even better than what I currently have.

As to how it compares to the other phones...there's a lot more to that question. The short answer, if you just want a phone to play games on, won't make much difference. However, if you want/need a phone that you can be much more productive with, and play games, and feel comfortable knowing that your data/communications are secure, then absolutely BlackBerry is your choice.

Proud owner of a BlackBerry Playbook & Torch

Hey Kevin and CB team!

I'm from Ecuador (are we on that world list? haha)!! Do you think that RIM is going to have the phones early next year over here?

That would be awesome! We are so anxious for this mobile. Its gonna be nice!!

So, what are the chances BB10 will be available for the Playbook on on 31 Jan?

Well finally a release date. I've moved off from my 9810 to a Galaxy Nexus and the Note 2 will be my next phone to be honest. However, I'm rooting for BB10 and in all probability will get a touch-based BB10 phone. Hopefully BB10 for the PlayBook is not too far off as well. I want RIM to come back hard.

This is great news!!! Can't wait for BlackBerry 10 :) for now my Lumia 920 will help with the wait :) go RIM!

Any guesses on the size and width of the phone? I have read a 4.7" screen. So I am thinking possibly 5"x 2.5". Something along the lines of maybe the LG Spectrum 2 or Samsung SIII?

Please Help!! January 30 th is not soon enough. My Crackberry is becoming and embarrassment, Small Children are laughing at me, teenagers are shuning me, the techically advaced like my older childern are shaking ther heads and showning me their droid or IPhones like I am an addled child and hipsters are nodding approvingly.

I work in a techinical field and when I take out my Blackberry some start question my core competency.

I am not a luddite, Save Me!!!!!

Seriously, because I as an IT manager laugh at professional people who *don't* use BB... As a matter of fact, last time when we were looking for an external vendor for some of our stuff one company lost because they weren't using BB and not because me or our company is a BB fan, but because a) we did not take them seriously; b) we did not want our information (emails, etc) on devices that weren't secure enough...

Kevin, tell them any way you can (e.g., editorial, phone calls, emails) that they should have gift certificates available for Xmas, at least in N.A. I understand this could be a problem for them to work out; also understand that this Xmas isn't the end of the market and there will be other times to sell. BUT, RIM is in critical need of cash flow and once someone buys a phone this Xmas, s/he is likely locked in for a contract period, blah, blah.

I was standing in line in a café scrolling through twitter posts. The I saw a post from another site and run out the establishment laughing with excitement.. lol folk must have thought I was nuts... Great stuff...

Stop it !! I like my 9900 and am looking forward to using for 1 more year. Then maybe the BB10 ... Something odd about the BB10 coming out in the first month of 2013 - LoL

Wow they couldn't get their act together to launch just 2-3 months earlier than Jan 30 to make the holiday rush?? Haven't they seen Apple's and Microsoft's method of releasing a slighly under-baked product then updating within a month? Geez.

Geez, when did you decide to show up and act like you know something? This has been discussed ad nauseam over the last few months. Geez . . smh

RIM tried that a couple of times already: they no longer have that luxury. Any goodwill and forgiveness from media pundits has long been spent. If they don't get the software right on day one, their goose will be cooked...

Well, well, well.......looky here......The light at the end of the tunnel is SHINING BRIGHT today ladies and gentlemen..........WE WIN!!!!!!!!!!

hopefully RIM dosent make a mistake and start putting Exclusive to there phones. all phone should be release on all carriers....

Now, where are the so called analysts and their predictions ???...... IOS and Android (90%) still nt able to get FIPS certification in any of their devices till very best for playing angry Birds....

"Lord of the Smartphones" - The Return of Blackberry .........Jan 30th 2013

To ALL that declared RIM DEAD already... Blackberry is back!!! Zombies anybody?!? Maybe the new OS should be called BBZ! lol

My hope is the phones will be released before Valentines Day (2/14) when I leave for a three week trip to Australia. I'd hate to find out all of you are using your new "10" while I'm gone and I'm there with my Torch. I wonder if I could get Verizon to ship it overseas....

Rejoice! Life is worth living again! Watch out tech world because the RIMpire strikes back!

Finaly bb 10. Now apple and samsung can sew fight each other while I wait for bb 10 l-series to be releases in storesand bb"doesnt copy other smartphones" I hope skype will be on it in the mean time start saving :)

I'm new to Crackberry, but follow the comments from time to time to keep abreast of attitudes to RIM's progress. As of now I've only invested in the playbook. I got the 64G model with the rapid charger along with the case and keyboard. I went with RIM's tablet after a careful look at the specs of other tablets on the market at the time,(I got mine in early spring 2012). I'm quite happy with it's portabilty and it's speed. Every update, except, which drained my battery, was an improvement. The playbook does what I need and hinders me very little in regards to the lack of apps. I would like it to be more versatile but understand that it is more a question of politics than ability that leaves it lacking and feel that these issues will be taken care of soon enough. I'm referring to cross platform access to video chat mostly and beefing up the native browser to allow access to more sites.
I have my own take on the differences in hardware and OS's.
Android sounds like a good deal but allows every stray mutt to come in for a sniff and start humping everything in sight. Bastards everywhere. Apple is wound so tight that the only way for a dog to get some action is to pay through the nose, and then realize you've just been locked up in an overpriced kennel and will get fed only after you've cut off your own balls and wear an overpriced leash... I would rather take my chance with RIM, at least I'll be allowed to run around in a very safe environment and still be able to browse other neighbourhoods without having to compromise my independence or my individuality. A dog's got to run
I feel BB10 will be a game changer but have enough patience to get through another few months without the world coming to an end. Rock on RIM!

Welcome Rubus! I certainly hear your concerns about apple and android products. As I have iPads, iPods, BN phones, and a playbook. And prefer my BN products purely for their functionality suiting my needs without any fearof security issues.

Like you, we're all waiting and hoping bb10 is what we hope it to be.

And, finally, it comes up. The long time waiting for this moment. Can't wait to hold Blackberry 10 on my hands and in my pocket.

Can't wait! The previews I have been seeing online are looking great! Can't wait to finally able to use an actual BB10! :P

They must have planned this as a 40th bday gift for me on 27th Feb, great timing guys. Glad I didn't upgrade my three year old 9700 a year ago.

Plus I got 64gb PlayBook waiting for updates too.

BTW Just tried sending an mp3 from my wife's iPhone 5 to my bb and it couldn't even do that most basic of tasks. It's always good to get a reminder of why never to buy apple products, you can't do basic tasks that we take for granted on bbs.

This is amazing news. I have been following Rim from January of 2012 and I love the change I have seen in the company. I think that they just decided to announce a launch date for all us diehard fans since there have been much negative speculation of when it will have been launched.

I guess Jan 30th is the offical annoucement date does not mean it will be available Feb 1st, few weeks after Jan 30th with me the realstic date..I am guessing we will be able to purchase around feb 15th. My work IT manager had demo of bb10 and he was impressed with new bb10. Go RIM Go

If these phones are weeks upon weeks away to buy on the 30th Jan/2013, then I am not interested....wake up Rim or else!!!!!!

If these phones are weeks upon weeks away to buy on the 30th Jan/2013, then I am not interested....wake up Rim or else!!!!!!

I think it's safe to expect a launch within 2 weeks of the announcement, the only delaying factor in my opinion could be if the launch is planned to close to another major competitors release such as the iPhone 5s or samsung galaxy s4.

For RIMS sake, let's hope that they steal all the sunshine in Q1 and get a few months head start on apple or samsung's newest devices.

BB10 = the ultimate multitasking device, Jan 30th can't come soon enough, my 9860 wants to retire!

The best part is that it is on a Wednesday, my day off!! I will be glued to the interwebs all day. Will have to stock up on supplies...

Check this out:
(0+1)+(3+0)+(2+0+1+3) = 10!

Even 3+0+0+1+2+0+1+3 = 10!

Pick up your date, numbers don't lie, it will be AWESOME!
Proud BlackBerry owner since 2007

Hey Kevin! You guys should make an official countdown ticker on the front page of Come on guys lets get everyone jacked for the launch. I'm super excited!!!!

That should've been the releaese date not the announcement date. I'm upgrading to the Nexus 4 (unlocked). So when they release a slider, hopefully, sometime next year then I will use my upgrade for it.

Hmm, I'm thinking "Backberry Balance,...should be renamed to "BLACKBERRY PROFILES"!

What do you think?

JMD need of a better Smartphone,..preferrably a new "Blackberry"!

I went from many different Blackberries, then to iPhone now Galaxy S3. (All good products) I really hope BB10 Hits a Monster Home Run. If its as good as what I see and hear, I'd switch in a heartbeat..

FUCK YES!!!!!!! GO GO BLACKBERRY 10!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I LOVE FREE SPEECH!!!! :) THIS 9900, and BB10, and my PLAYBOOK, will be a seemless seem!! :)

I have to say that the part that I love the most in the list of things anounced is bb balance... I have a bb from work that I can't use for anything but work so if I could start using apps or personal email on it because of this dual environmnent that is separate from each other it would be awesame!

Date math.

BB10 reveal date 1/30/2013 = 10 as mentioned before.

BB10 avalible date 3/1/2013 = 10 (guess)

Having come from a session on BES and BB10... all I can say is RIM is ready.

I had to sign an NDA so I can't say much about what they haven't made very public but RIM is incredibly forward thinking about the mobile computing environment.

It doesn't stop with just a smartphone or a tablet.

From what I saw today, I can say I'm very confident RIM is serious about being a player. First to enhance and build upon enterprise but also get the consumer market back.

One thing I can tell you is that release date of the first device (and within 2 months the keyboard versions) relied on when providers choose to release. They have their product release cycles so they're working with RIM right now to determine actual device release dates.

Keep the faith, I was very impressed with where RIM is looking to go.

Finally get to see the real thing after such a long wait. Have always been a fans of blackberry since i get my first bold 9000. Love the physical keyboard. There's no other competitors who can win over the feel..
Hope the launch date will be official soon and hope it doesn't takes too long to reach the market.

Will Blackberry 10 be compatible with Blackberry 7 in terms of tranferring over group contacts for texting and for e-mail? Will there be limits on how many contacts can text on one send message??
Last time I upgraded from curve to the torch got a down grade on these features had unlimited on texting now I have 100 group limit!!! on the fence right now to wait for BB10 or get android, texting and e-mail is the feature keeps me hanging on to BB!!!!

Does anyone know if there will be an area for the public to attend the launch?? Or maybe a crackberry contest to attend?? I wanna go to the NYC one soo badly. I even took the day off from work in hopes that I can.. lol.

so are we losing the physical keyboard for a virtual one with the BB10? will there no longer be keys to click?

no, there will be one with a virtual kayboard its called the x10 the full touch screen is the z10... bb10 is going to be amazing!

You know what would be cool...if Heins showed up for the launch in a Volkswagen or BMW, then proclaimed, "If you will be in ze Vatuhloo area und wud like a Blackberry ZEEE 10, call 519-DU WERDEST EINE KRANKENSCHWESTER!!"

Ok, maybe I watch too much Family Guy. Long live King Heins and the RIMpire!!! Five more days to go!!

I guess they are thinking ooVoo would be good enough?
...yep... no skype is definetely going to suck, but then again there was never skype for blackberry anyway(nevermind the verizon glitch)

If bb10 is popular Microsoft will get skype on it soon enough regardless, either just to plug the hole for the ooVoo siphoning or simply because their own internal competition within the MSFT to get the numbers up.
