BlackBerry developers can now get started on making BlackBerry 6 compatible applications. In addition to the unveiling of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and announcement of BlackBerry 6, Research In Motion has also made the BlackBerry Java SDK v6.0 available for all. RIM Announces Java SDK to Support New BlackBerry 6


User Interface Enhancements, Web Kit Browser Support and New Services Make it Easier to Build Compelling and Fresh Applications for BlackBerry Smartphones

Waterloo, ON - Research In Motion - (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced a new Java SDK to support BlackBerry® 6, a highly anticipated new operating system for BlackBerry® smartphones. BlackBerry® Java SDK v6.0 takes advantage of new UI features, offers deeper integration with BlackBerry smartphones, access to new and enhanced services and support for rendering and porting content to the new WebKit-based browser.  

BlackBerry Java SDK v6.0 focuses on providing developers with powerful tools that enable them to create rich, visually appealing applications on the BlackBerry® Application Platform and make it easier to integrate capabilities that have traditionally been difficult for developers.  The BlackBerry developer community can now access more than 40 new APIs that allow them to build visually rich and deeply integrated applications that take advantage of the new features in BlackBerry 6.

“The opportunity for developers to create applications that tie to core applications and features of the BlackBerry Application Platform has never been greater,” said David Yach, Chief Technology Officer, Software at Research In Motion. “Our veteran developers, as well as those who are new to the BlackBerry platform, are going to be thrilled with the new APIs as well as the sleek and powerful user interface.”

Richer User Interfaces
The BlackBerry Java SDK v6.0 supports the fresh new look in the BlackBerry 6 user interface (UI) with new pre-built UI elements including contextual menus, tables, lists, inertial scrolling, activity progress indicators, pane managers, tool bars, title bars and sub menus.

BlackBerry Browser with WebKit
The new browser in BlackBerry 6 leverages a WebKit rendering engine and developers will be able to build dynamic web sites and rich mobile applications as well as advanced widgets that can be seamlessly integrated with the browser and core native applications. BlackBerry Widgets and web applications designed for the BlackBerry Browser v 5.0 will be forward compatible to the new browser.

HTML5 Support
With the added support of HTML5 in the new BlackBerry 6 Browser, web developers will be able to create content for BlackBerry smartphones that is run through the web, including compelling games and interactive media with 3D graphics in real time and more.

Native Feature Integration
Developers can use new APIs to more deeply integrate their applications with various aspects of a BlackBerry smartphone’s core functionality. The Unified Search Framework API will allow developers to register their application and their content partners to be searchable, as well as provide a mechanism for in-app search. The Mapfield API has been redesigned to provide enhanced features including panning, zooming, my location and convenience toolbars. Developers can call the Mapfield API to customize the look of location data and can use multiple mapfields simultaneously on the same screen for added user benefits.

Location Service Enhancements
The Location Service has been enhanced with a Wi-Fi® Geolocation API, allowing developers to build applications that leverage a handset's location based on its proximity to Wi-Fi networks. The API builds on the LBS features already available to developers through cell tower location and GPS. Reverse Geocoding now allows applications to leverage zip/postal codes to obtain local information. The Travel Time API brings estimated time of arrival (ETA) information into applications. The ETA is based on anonymous real-time crowd sourced data combined with historical traffic information.

No BB 6 for the 9 month old Storm 2. Why do we even bother with Blackberries? Oh yeah, because our employers pay for them. I suppose every cloud has a silver lining, just not sure what that lining is good for.

HOW CAN YOU PUT OUT A NEW OS AND IT NOT SUPPORT A LESS THAN A YEAR OLD DEVICE????I MISS MY BB, BUT DARN, AT LEAST WITH MY IPHONE 3GS, IT WILL BE "ALLOWED" TO UPDATE TO ANY NEWER OS! i AM SOOO CONCERNED FOR RIM...VERY CONCERNED.

I WAS A BB USER (AND ABUSER :) FOR YEARS. IT WAS BB'S INABILITY OR LACK OF WANTING TO MOVE FORWARD THAT I HAD TO MAKE THE CHANGE TO A SYSTEM THAT I HAD TO HAVE. AS A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO MOVE ON. AND THAT IS WHERE, I'M AFRAID, THE DIRECTION THAT MOST BB USERS WILL BE FORCED TO GO. SAD BUT TRUE.

AGAIN, I AM NOBODY'S FANBOY, JUST MOVED ON TO A PRODUCT THAT ALLOWED ME TO MOVE FORWARD WITH USEABLE TECH AND NOT PIGEON-HOLE ME INTO A VERY LIMITED FORRAY OF UNUSABLE TECH.

PLEASE, RIM...MOVE FORWARD AND WIN ME BACK!

Amen brother , device support should always be 2 year min. Even if it can't support all the features! For the storm 2 to not have support and the bold 9700 to have is just a marketing ploy since storm 3 is around the corner.

The new OS and this phone look amazing. I have an Iphone and I hate the notification system they use. If the iphone had better notifications, better exchange support, I would never use my blackberry. Im stuck using two phones, and having two phone bills. Im going to look at Adroid Froyo and update and see if can be good for my needs.

Will the new OS allow VOIP applications? Will the new OS allow Mobile Hotspot like both the Android and Iphone do. What about the ability to create a software that can block both calls, and SMS like iblacklist for Iphone and others on Android?
Will the OS allow us to password protect applications?
I hope so, if not and Android notifications work out, Good bye BB. You need to hire innovators!!

Seriously dude..wtf are you even on these forums? Cuz your paid I guess..anytime I read something about anything to do with BB..I see you trolling. What I want to know is seriously wtf makes your android phone sooo much better? Cuz it swipes faster? Cuz you can start your car with it? Or does it have some super cool "transform" app and now is your loyal sidekick like fuking Bumblebee? Honestly..wtf is it? I'm still rocking a storm 1 and can watch movies, online bank, surf the web with relative ease thanks to Opera, stream porn, play the odd game, send and receive emails flawlessly, chat with people. So wtf am I missing here? Maybe someone could explain how any phone is gonna be such a game changer that my life will drastically change. My guess is no one can. So please do me a favor and gtfo outta here and troll somewheres else.

...reading all these negative comments, from folk who lacked belief and so changed devices.

Now they find themselves locked into plans on sub-standard phones unable to catch the wave, with no alternative but to come onto a BlackBerry specific blog and whine.

The thing with BlackBerries is that first and foremost they're communications devices.

Great phones. Great for SMS. Fantastic for email, and above all BlackBerry Messaging.

And now we've got pretty well everything the others have as well.

Any android come out I read ppl say oh I'm getting this bye Rim. Plzzzz nobody cares what phone u haters get. Just buy it have a coke n a smile and shut the fuk up. Get off rim's DICK. Like I said will any of u haters make a better phone or even know how 2 install windows on your pc? Go on the blackberry website u can sign up 4 updates on when that will be available. But its up to your carrier if they will release it. With the 9780 on the way slim chance if tmobile decides 2 do that. Since they screwed us 8900 owners out of 5.0.
