Press Release: BlackBerry Introduces the New BlackBerry Z30 Smartphone with 5” Display and BlackBerry 10.2 OS

Gee thanks mods.

Anyway the Z30 is too big for me. Pass.

via CB10 (BB Z10 : BLK : OS 10.1) [ Channel @ C0012477B for BB News, MMA & Tech Updates ]

I understand your concern, but it's not really that big. Unlike a Galaxy Note 2/3, it fits in your pocket... unless you have very small pockets. Basically, it'll feel like a Galaxy S4 with much better build quality, which will feel a little big for about a week if you are used to phones with small screens like Apple and BlackBerry phones, but it will still be easily useable for most people with one hand. After the first week, it'll be hard for anyone to go back to browsing or watching media on the smaller screen. I think the useability exception may be apps that put key controls on the title bar iOS style... like BlackBerry's own contacts app or BeMaps or something. The design guidelines for BB10 aren't totally against that, but putting the controls closer to the keyboard near the bottom of the screen is the better practice.

You must have big pockets if you think the z30 isn't an unruly size. The specs are nice but anything bigger than the z10 is a tablet to me. Power to you though

Posted via CB10

No, like tens of millions of Americans, I've fit a Galaxy S3 / S4 in the pocket of my suit jacket or pants without any struggle, at all. It's not even a tight fit. This is just what modern competitive mobile phones look like today... Or you could believe that Samsung, HTC, LG, and even the Nokia with the Lumia 1020, which is almost the same size, all simply forgot about pocket sizes in designing their flagship phones...

Yes, I understand Apple argues that 4 inches is a superior size and they sold a lot of iPhone 5 units, but try surfing the web or watching a movie on an iPhone 5 versus a Galaxy S4. It's only an extra inch in screen size, but the difference in useability is very significant.

I love my Z10, but I was never able to get used to the small screen. It felt like using an iPhone, which I own for dev purposes, but which I never use because the screen is just a little too small for comfortable browsing and media. Even email and BBM -- especially HTML email and long, media rich messages -- will be better on a larger screen. Even more so if we would have seen a bump up in resolution, but...

Even so, I understand this is subjective. I've tried a Note, which is only half an inch bigger in screen size and, well, that is too big for me to use comfortably, so I get where you are coming from.

Posted via CB10

It will fit it your pants pockets, but wont fully fit in your shirt pocket.

Size aside, I've had a brief moment with the phone and it just appears to be an afterthought or a "me too" phone. It doesn't look very sleek or high end in person.

The Z10 currently looks sleeker IMO.

Spec-wise, it does appear to be holding it's own though, but I'm just not sure if there is a case for this phone from BlackBerry at this point.

I have a new LG G2 that has a 5.2 inch screen and it fits in my shirt pocket just fine. Although the bezels on the G2 or much smaller so I don't know about the over all size of the 2 phones.

BlackBerry has the video set to private... should go live any minute / second. Have patience if you hit play and it's not there just yet. Thanks!

And how about that Z30 name?!

I was really hoping they would change the name. I really liked the idea they follow the" x"10 naming scheme because it sounds really nice

From the press release:

"New Antenna Technology – The BlackBerry Z30 smartphone features BlackBerry’s new generation antenna technology that dynamically tunes reception to give you better connectivity in low signal areas. BlackBerry® Paratek Antenna can give you faster data transfers and fewer dropped calls in low signal areas, keeping you connected in more places."

Most of us were probably expecting the Z10/Q10/Q5 to utilize the Paratek technology that RIM acquired a while back, but it looks like they finally implemented it in the Z30. Or, it's already in the previous BB10 devices and BlackBerry is just highlighting it again.

More importantly who in The UK is going to send me one. Let me know how much money I owe you!

Posted via CB10

I think they kept "Z" because of it is full touchscreen version. All future models with full touchscreen will have the prefix "Z". As I also believe "Q" means any model with a QWERTY physical keyboard, where all models ended with "0" (zero) would be the TOP of the line of its kind and "5" the more affordable models. Do you believe we'll still have the Radio variation models? It would be just perfect having a real LTE Global phone out-of-the-box, first of this kind.

Why did they skip Z20? The phone itself is okay, if you don't already have a Z10. I thought they could have bumped the rear cam to at least 12 MP and the storage to 32 GB. RAM could also be bumped to 4 GB to allow for more sophisticated apps to be written. The Z10 is still around and didn't need a replacement - the Z10 is still a great phone. What BB needed was a top notch premium phone -- hardware wise, this phone doesn't quite do it when compared to the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S. Software wise, this phone rocks! Still, many folks buy based on hardware specs.

Doesn't Compare to iphone 5s? The only spec on the iPhone 5s that is more technological advanced is Touch ID. I don't think BlackBerry needed to increase the specs any much more than the z10 in the same calendar year. It's a much bigger leap comparing the z10 to z30. Than comparing the iPhone 5 to 5c and 5s. Apple had a year to make a more superior hardware and they failed to do so. Again the z30 has better battery, speakers, micro sd,micro hdmi, much better radio technology... come on.. even on paper the z30 trumps the iPhone 5s, which is really more on par with the z10.

Don't put the Galaxy S4 in the same category as the iPhone 5s when talking about hardware specs. Don't insult samsung.

Posted via CB10

Hey, I really like my Z10 but let's stay realistic. The A7 blows the new Z30 CPU out of the water as does the graphics. Blackberry did disappoint me though with better Hardware. The iPhone 5s actually surprised me. A huge leap in processor speed on every browser benchmark it scores faster than anything else available today in some it is even on par with desktop systems. Anyhow don't want to start a flame war but Hardware wise Apple stills sets the benchmark. However software wise blackberry does really catch up nicely and surpasses others in many areas. Now get that message out, Blackberry marketing. The user experience is what counts and blackberry does deliver with 10.1 and soon with 10.2.

While there are some improvements here, some of them great, the big 3 upgrades consumers expect are Camera quality, display Resolution and available storage memory. Sadly all 3 of these are the exact same (or in the case of resolution, lower).

Again, not being a debbie downer, just raising a flag that this is the same 'good enough' attitude that put them into this position in the first place. We've now seen 3 devices launch with the same camera and storage. Hopefully this is not a deja vu.

"And how about that Z30 name?!"

i was thinking about this the other day, & to me it seems like just another #/letter combination that's strarting to get lost in all the other #/letter combos,,, nothing about it, (the name), grabs me, or probably anyone else out there that may be looking to go to BB,,, just sounds bland to me...

for a while there i thought BBRY was going with that whole beta device-naming system ... and they had a whole ton of names like: Agosto

Some of them are questionable but definitely would stand out more than just a letter number combo like you said.

The z30 was announced in malaisya event? I didn't see none about the event on the post. So maybe the event is all about bbm, right?

Posted via CB10

birdman, birdman, birdman... why are you stalking me?

hit a nerve somewhere?

i'm actually very excited for it being dual core cpu, with quad core GPU. It just shines up my day.

I think a small act of courtesy will do, even if everyone disagrees with everybody else on anything, or every thing.

let him be. CB is full of trolls anyway. But it shouldn't allow us to let this forum to degenerate into a chaotic state. Let it be. After all, I'm just iffed at the idea that to be excited at something warrants a "are you a first time commenter" comment. That was weird in every sense.

But just let it be.

"but it has Miracast no wireless HDMI and no wireless charging..."

this contradicts your post,,, just sayin',,, will the real answer please stand up...

A I haven't even got the 10.2 update for my z10 shouldn't it b available for the people that can't update by a leaked side loading

Posted via CB10

Updates for current hardware are always after it shows up on new hardware, the carriers obviously prioritise approving the new hardware over a software upgrade.

My friend is at the event launch in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia right now. And she uses lumia. Gah.

Posted via CB10

Was hoping for a live blog from Crackberry. I'm still going to spend 50% of my day on Crackberry, but I had to go to N4BB for the live news feed.

I think I may have to renew my contract right when this comes out, I've been lusting for a BB10 phone since the Z10 first came out. The Z30 looks much more bad ass!

I totally love it... Its spectacular... everyone are gonna love this phone... Its gonna be a killa...

Posted via CB10

While I am happy and very excited about the release of this product and want one, I am gonna be a bit more patient and wait to see if the price of this thing will nosedive like the Z10...

Posted via CB10

I don't know why, but it seems that my day has become as normal in beautiful. As i BlackBerry fan I really, really need news like that in these days. Wow!

Posted via CB10

Hey Great Video btw. I think its the first time blackberry delivered an informational video which points out the most interesting things about the device and the software !!! And all this in 1:25 :) they are getting better :D

Yes, but I am retarded and still prefer removable. I have swapped dead batts more times than I can count on my Z10 (I play a lot of games), so I will need to see how it holds up in the Z30 for similar users.

Also, battery age. I would also like to wait until iFixit gets its hands on it to see how easy it would be to replace a fatigued battery.

Posted via CB10 on my kickass media-consuming Z10

Why such a quiet launch? Should there not be a big party? CEO announcing new device? Wait, oh, that only happens at Apple!

Posted via CB10

CEO is busy planning out his future with his $55 million golden parachute which he will receive following the sale of the company in pieces.

Great product and more importantly a great promo video that shows it off instead of the weird Superbowl one earlier this year..

Posted via CB10

I can imagine Frank Boulben storming out of the room when they played that video for him, cursing under his breath in French

I will not buy this..... z30... my z10 contain many problems that I am tired updating it with original and leaking update and the problems still there.

Posted via CB10

Sorry to hear that you're having problems...perhaps listing them all in a thread on the forums might help get them resolved.

Mmmm...CB10! Just the tip though...

I wholeheartedly agree! My Z10 has been nearly problem free, but thanks to Crackberry I have been able to fix any issues I've had.

I'm waiting on bbry to have a phone with captivating stylus capabilities. I love that about the GS and Note line.

Hope this device does well.

Posted via CB10

Just order a stylus from Samsung and use it with this phone. It's all the same and does not require any special technology. It's just a capacitive pen.

Posted via CB10

The Note smartphones have Wacom style screens, so the phone's pens don't use the capacitive part.

--Q10 and Canadian all the way! Posted via CB10 on

S Pens are device specific I think because I had a Note 10.1 tablet and I couldn't use the tablet's S Pen on a Galaxy Note 2 phone. Hence I doubt it will work on other phones or tablets.

Posted via CB10

I like that there was no mention of screen resolution. Instead of specs they concentrated on the features of the phone.

Can't wait to get my hands on the Z30! Looks like the decision for my next phone got that much harder!

Because the specs are sub par. 8mp camera and dual core processor. Those 2 things make the phone far less appealing to Joe bob walking into Verizon

Posted via CB10

While I agree the specs aren't top of the line bleeding edge, I think they will make for a great phone experience.

I disagree that Joe Bob cares only about specs. I would bet that one of two scenarios happen: 1) Walk in looking for the phone their friend showed them and let the sale person show them the phone, 2) Walk in looking for a phone and saw a commercial or is just going to ask the sales person. In either case the sales person is really controlling the information. I don't think it would matter if the Z30 had a 4K HD screen, 10GB RAM, and 1 TB harddrive. In the end it's still a BlackBerry and the sales people have to make the pitch to Joe Bob walking in. If they never show them the phone, or say "oh you don't want a BlackBerry, they are dead", why would Joe Bob purchase a phone? The good sales person won't necessarily sell the flavor of the month to someone if all they care about is communication, which is what BlackBerry excels at.

true,,, if the sales/marketing is as deplorable as it's been for the last 7 months, it won't matter what it does/has,,, on top of that, if the sales person says is that they're up for sale or going out of business, most prospective customers will treat like it's got a std...

Yes, a Q30 is what we've been shouting for all this while... if BlackBerry makes a physical keyboard device with a larger/taller screen. I will drop my iPhone in a heartbeat!

Argh! I love my Q10, but this one looks completely awesome too! Although I am wary of big-screen phones, I can't deny that it'll make stuff like browsing even better. Tempted, so tempted...

Yes certainly this phone is a lot lot better than the Z10 in terms of EVERYTHING. But what is in it that the CEO Heins said will change the way people use their mobile computing devices. Yes this is a great device no denial in that but how does it kick ass S4 and Iphone 5 and HTC One etc of the world? And it finally comes to the same old problem of some MUST HAVE apps which are still missing in this OS. Not much but just like 10 MUST have apps like Netflix, Instagram and 8 more must have apps would not cost BB more than 100 million dollars which they can give to the developers of these apps and get these asap!

Also I sincerely hope BB prices the Z30 smartly and with some offer to get going sales of around 3-5 million per quarter ATLEAST!!

Kevin-Any thoughts on my comment?

rumor posted above says $900+ in UK,,, if there's any truth to that, they apparently haven't learned a thing in 7 months...

Well this bad boy will definitely compliment my Q. I'm planning on using it primarily as an entertainment device. But if I get rolling on that virtual keyboard, my Q may see less daylight. Lol

Launch Price is 620 USD right? If so,not bad at all! In a couple of month Will be 550: competitive Price To me :)

Posted via CB10

I think the uplifting part of the announcement is the part that say 'next week in the UK' instead of 'Coming soon.'

Way to go BlackBerry!

While the look of a phone is a matter of taste (I don't like the look of the Z30) this launch video is not! (besides the good explanation of how the phone works) It's the same aweful presentation as the Z10 and Q10 which are amazing looking but at the same time not presented well. Please don't use this gross background colour on both, your videos and your phones. I talk a lot about BB with other people. I have to show them videos and pictures cause I don't own a BB10 phone yet. And all I hear is how "old" everything looks. My brother has a Q10 and when the same people who say that everything looks old see his phone, they're amazed!! The presentation of new phones (Wallpaper, colours...) has to change in my opinion.. Anyway, good luck with this product, I really hope it will sell well.

You're right. They should have had an actual person walk down the street holding the device, disappear into multi colored dust, then emerge from the sewer with it.

It's a shame that many will pass on this phone ,as they aren't sure where BB is heading down the road, somehow ,get some news out fast, to ensure people that BB is alive and well.

That is not the reason. Most BlackBerry loyal fans have already gotten the Z10 just a few months ago so for the few upgrades on the Z30 most of us will pass. Only hard core fans and those that have yet upgraded to BB10 will go now with the Z30.

Posted via CB10

It's most stupid compare as possible. If for you that is the real indicator then I can write 40 reasons for Blackberry Z30 vs. iPhone 5s.

if you are excited about this I understand why BB is on the death bed...obviously you accuse Apple of releasing the same product every years but BB has done the exact same and the Z30 specs are for a 2012 device. the 5S have specs that BB will probably add in 2015 if they are still around.

It's a legit question. They decreased the PPI from the Z10 to the Z30. One would expect it to go the other way.

How is this any different than Samsung and the Note series? They all have the same resolution as the models with smaller screens, yet the screen is larger therefore the PPI is smaller.

Posted via CB10

I remember reading that all the planned touchscreen devices after Z10 would be 1280x720 (to attain the 16:9 aspect ratio, presumably, as opposed to the 15:9 that the Z10 has at 1280x768.)

Not exactly low-res for a phone, but it's got a lower pixel density than the iPhones due to screen size. It's actually higher 'resolution' than the iPhones, slightly lower than the Z10.

To become somewhat more compliant with existing video formats and standards, I would imagine. Widescreen video content is often 16:9. The less scaling or cropping involved, the better.

Some of the "pro" for iPhone 5s are really stupid: Shorter and Narrower... of course it is - it's a 4" vs 5" device!!
Has built-in HDR mode? Both devices have (wrong answer).
Has 64-bit? As far as I know, we have very little information about the A7 processor. Since the iPhone 5s does not have more than 1GB of memory it is not a matter of a limit here. Most apps are going to be 32-bit for a long time to support older iPhones anyway.

We could also have a question saying: More memory.... Oh...Z30 "wins".

Silly comparison....

I really like the Z30 marketing message: "BB10 amplified.", "See more. Hear more. Do more."

BlackBerry knows to play to their strength on making the best communication device. With the new features such as Natural Sound, Priority Hub, BBM Anywhere and new antenna technology, no other phones come close on the communication front. Next will be more devs and more apps (fingers crossed), and the turn around will finally take hold.

Great advert by the way! As for the handset itself, tempting. As a side note, I'd be more inclined towards this touch screen bb than the Z10, because the Z30 looks less like an iPhone! I want to hear some reports about the efficacy of the keyboard before I jump though, being more of a fan of the physical keyboard bbs [and hence for months pretty much convinced that my first BB10 experience would be on the Q10].

Already going to buy TWO off contract. Now my girlfriend wants to trade up her Z10 too.

I used my Z10 to create this CrackBerry madness!

Will have to wait til I can play with it before making a decision

My Z10 is OK but my farmers hands are cumbersome so the extra size might make it more comfortable for me to hold and use

Posted via CB10

Oh it's on the list .... im getting one and giving my Z10 to my gf :D please Blackberry stay in business, you are on the right track !! :D

I'm super exited to see that battery usage time & especially to see BlackBerry finally using their Paratech antennas :)

Good and clear introduction video this time around! Just missed one thing; they should have added the #IChooseBlackBerry10 tag. ;)

Another failure on giving a simple message, the ad does not mention in any place that is a 5'' display, it just says, BB to the big screen, and don't tell me that it is obvious because is not, people like to here the size, and 5" sounds so appealing, so i believe this ad skipped the main feature of this larger phone, which is the screen size.

I can't wait! I will get one but I love my Z10. I miss the battery life of my Bold the Z30 looks sweet. Some of you need to get the specs race thing out of your head. Looks like there are features and improvements not found on any other devices on the market specifically the antenna. If I recall they purchased a company awhile back for this purpose. I'm just glad they're highlighting some of the features. They need to advertise better for consumers because they can sell its just that people think they aren't in the game anymore. Get with it BlackBerry.

Posted via CB10

I really hope you do another contest to win one of these!! I want one so bad!!

Posted via CB10

So it is going to hit the UK and middle east next week and screw all of us in the USA for 2 more months again. Just freaking great.

Posted via CB10

What's the use of an altimeter? The GPS can serve that same purpose.

--Q10 and Canadian all the way! Posted via CB10 on

NICE! It's going to be a HIT here in the Philippines! :D I'll probably swap my Z10 with it once it gets to Manila. :D

Posted via CB10

Any word on internal memory?

Cannot find it anywhere. Really excited to try this new antenna at the cottage anniversary the best part is wait time is less than expected

Posted via CB10

This will look great at Best Buy and Walmart. The bigger phones really catch the shoppers eye. It will help to draw attention to the Z10 and Q10 as well.

Eh I'm just not excited about it. 5" Screens are too big for me. Can't comfortable use with one hand.

Sent From Q10/HTC One

Mainly because it looks cheap and plastic like and was painted with model airplane paint. My idea of a sexy chin would be a metal insert anadized satin black.

It will become available in the US in November. The 15th's my birthday, I'll buy the Z30. I must have it. Been a BlackBerry fan since always.

Posted via CB10

I've throwing money on the screen of my computer and nothing happens! LOL

I was skeptical when I first saw the z30, nahhh to big for me, but I'm loving it by the minute.
Please CB, stop the torture with all those sweet videos and pictures...

Cool phone even if a lot of people feel that some of the specs should've come out earlier on the Z10. I'm sticking to my Q10 though. Still not sold on the touch keyboard and willing to trade screen size for that. A slider sounds like a great solution for people like me. Anyone thinks the same?

Posted via CB10

I used to be that way. I was determined to only use the Q10 when it came out. I got the Z10 just to try it till the Q came out. When the time came I didn't want to let go of my Z10.

Why another helter-skelter limited launch in only several places? How often is BlackBerry going to keep doing this and then wondering why the launch does not go well?

The Z30 is doomed from the start.

This I have to agree with. The phone should be available everywhere within 4 weeks of the announcement, 2 weeks for major markets. They should have also started selling direct to consumer this Friday. That would have been a launch to notice!

Posted via CB10

That thing looks... fantastic!! oh man I want one I want one I want one. The wife can have my Z10 and dump her Curve!.

Posted via CB10

Now that video is what all of BlackBerry's advertisements should be like. Very good.

--Q10 and Canadian all the way! Posted via CB10 on

I'm glad they kept the Z10 up there. It's still a high end phone even if the Z30 is now an option.

BlackBerry Z10 | Verizon | @addm | In Squircle We Trust

I bought the Z10 six months ago when it was available in France. I will not repeat the same mistake with the Z30, my next phone will be either a Samsung or a Sony. I've got many problems with my Z10, I like(d) BlackBerry but I need a reliable phone.

What issues are you having? Most if not all issues that various others have had are tailored to in the forums. Please don't judge the device because you may have gotten a faulty one. Like it or not, every piece of tech we buy stands a chance of being faulty.

Z30 is exciting news, however I'm unsure if ill commit to BB again as I feel a bit burnt on the last couple products ( playbook and 9900 ) the lack of upgrades on not that old of product is gross. will this phone be forgotten by bb in two years. someone mentioned must have apps, this is very important point, throw some cash at developers. does anyone know why my 9900 shuts off in my pocket when it locked??? I switched from iphone to bb a couple years back, wont go back to iphone, not sure about BB now either.

"Subject to carrier approvals, BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2 is expected to be available ... beginning mid-October."
Verizon subscribers, can you say mid-April?
LEAK! is the new chic!

I'm so disgusted with Verizon over the lack of updates. I started messing with leaks on my Storm 2... Ran a few leaks on my Torch 9850. And my Z10 has seen a lot of leaks... LOVE the Berry Leaks Team!

Pretty much anyone with a BB10 device, a Windows PC, and a life line to CB forums can load up some 10.2 goodness!

Naah! I saw pics of the Z30 with the back cover removed and the battery appears to be held in place by a bracket and screws. I could be right.

Oh let's hope we get it much earlier than January... Lots of great improvements that need to get into the hands of so many!

What a beauty. Getting it. The Paratek antenna sounds interesting. I know that this is a company that they bought a few years ago.

Nice to see this acquisition finally worked in: BlackBerry® Paratek Antenna can give you faster data transfers and fewer dropped calls in low signal areas, keeping you connected in more places.

It remains to be seen if BlackBerry can create a touch screen phone that will catch on with the consumer. Each iteration since the original Storm has been rejected for the most part in the marketplace.

For their future's sake, we have to hope this is the one.

The thing that gets me is how many people are impressed with a demo of my Z10. Yet we don't hardly see them... My place of work just upgraded to BB10. I'm not sure if all got Z10 or Q10 but I know the Z10 is in a few hands for sure.

I was really hoping for a BBM cross-platform announcement here but the Z30 looks sweet! 10.2 when?

Keep it moving BlackBerry. #iChooseblackberry10
