We were on the edge of our seats this morning waiting for the first half of the BlackBery DevCon 2011 General Session to start. I think what we were all hoping for was a look at a QNX BlackBerry, or the announcement of the release of the much anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0. While we didn't get either of those things, some other interesting topics were touched on.

Alec Saunders, VP, Developer Relations & Ecosystems Development, took the stage after Mike Lazaridis. While speaking with Danny Winokur from Adobe, they kind of let slip the information that PlayBook OS 2.0 will be available today, but only for developers. You can register to download it at the link below, or if you are attending DevCon you many choose to have it installed today. While not what we were hoping for, exactly, I suppose it's a step toward it being available for everyone, developer or not.

Want... it... now! :P

moe1up

"but only for developers"

What exactly does this mean? Will it operate as normal as my current OS version?

maxb1ack

DevCon - Developers conference.. not product announcement for end user... RIM was clear when they said: OS2 AFTER DevCon!

ifarlow

Wait... am I understanding correctly that the good bits are now over? So no talk of PlayBook OS 2 at all? Really, or is there more coming?

djdnz

I hope that was not everything :(

ifarlow

Me too. I've never watched one of these before, and I was/am genuinely excited to see this one... but if this is essentially it, then I am disappointed. With all the bashing of RIM, I would have expected them to talk about OS 2. Fingers crossed that more is coming.

LegenJERRY

OS2 NOW AVAILABLE......................... For developers. Lol fail

HofstraJet

All you need to do is enter your PlayBook's PIN and then you are registered - who will be the brave soul to try it?

ifarlow

Already done. Waiting for download to show up.

Can I run Native SDK 1.0.7 applications while using Tablet OS 2.0?
It is not possible to deploy applications that are created with version 1.0.7 of the native SDK on tablets with BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0. But we’re excited to announce that a beta release of the native SDK 2.0, which supports BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0, will be available soon. Until then, please use the simulator or a tablet with BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.7 to test your applications.

So basically, if you upgrade to this BETA 2.0, you will not be able to use any of the current apps as they are developed using the 1.0.7 SDK (most of them), only the ones that were developed using the BETA NDK I guess and of course your own Android repackaged apps (as I don't think there are any available yet in App World). Their purpose on releasing this is so Android developers can start testing their repackaged apps... Basically this is just prepping the ground to be able to release 2.0 (hopufully in some near future) with some Adroid Apps already repackaged and tested and available...

So, to reiterate, DO NOT INSTALL THIS unless you want to test a repackaged Android App or want a crippled PB...

Lumute

This also means they will NOT release OS 2.0 to the public in a long while as they first need to release the SDK 2.0 (who knows when as all it says is "soon") and then start bugging all the developers to update their apps which I think will take a while... I guess they will only release 2.0 when the majority or at least a good portion of the apps have been updated using the SDK 2.0.

cookie_m0nster

Most apps are build with flash sdk or webworks and will run (even better) on the 2.0 beta. Only the apps build with the native SDK (also called NDK) won't run, which are mostly games like dead space, n.o.v.a, tofu, etc.

Marc_Paradise

Alternatively you won't be able to run the small subset of apps you may have (most people probably don't) that were created with NDK 1.x

That being said - what do you expect? It's not for consumers, it's for developers.

checkyoulater

a lot of my apps are still working...so far web reader being the only one to fail so far....however since they did release the native SDK with TAT UI elements I may go back to OS1.x if a better RSS/Google Reader comes along.

strikeIII

All my apps are running fine after doing the upgrade.

brkiko201

Just give us the OS 2 already n stop beating around the bush .. Sheeshh

Barefoot_Kevin

So how do we install the leak that will most likely come out?

theman71

i can't sign up not let me pust my email in

CAJ

No need for an email - its optional. Refresh page - enter PIN - check the box - submit. Done

youngdrake

It's cap sensitive as well. my first attemp failed cuz of that... now im waiting for the download.

artsheart

Regarding Playbook:. This is less than reassuring. No mention of 2.0 by co- CEO? BBX is the future of RIM though, not Playbook. So that I get.

balding1

So much for leapfrogging, what a bust today is turning out to be.Steve can rest in peace knowing what a joke devcon turned out to be.

TongueDar

Congratulations on making such an asinine comment.

br14

Thats Jims Balsilly for you. Always getting over excited.

Leapfrog :-D

The new OS software is really good, and the development tools look promising, but "leapfrog"?

Not to mention the slap in the face to BB Java developers.

Lets see a device on sale first.

Jim is becoming a liability. He needs to do "Setting Expectations 101".

andino

Devcon is a multiday event. There's still time for other things to be announced

IslandCombat

Lots of promising news, but nothing to really hit it home for todays users...

efd2051

As an end user I only care about "when can I use my playbook" for Skype or VPN into corp network, remote desktop. I am holding onto my PB (and hope) until end of week - but its going to my kids or craigslist after that. I just got an iPad and its working great ! ...which makes me even madder at RIM : (

IslandCombat

True enough... I've been talking about what my Playbook MIGHT be able to do oneday more than what it can do more of late. It's a hard sell.

djtaube

I feel that for sure. Being the only PlayBook owner in my organization and with a position of tech support I have been asked about several things it can do and I am left saying what it is stated to eventually do. Long story short, VPs don't care about that and just get iPads.

br14

The new Citrix Connect app looks fantastic and should be available for Playbook very soon.

nasigorengpete

So damn annoyed by Blackberry. Promises over promises. Where the f*ck is OS2 for public?!?!

IslandCombat

Just remember your playbooks going to be a brick, unless you develope :)

mapsonburt

They never said OS2 would be available today... they said they'd show it off today. They also said there would be a developer preview for Android BEFORE they released it... that's happening today. Other than Mike's "I believe its scheduled for 60 days" comment on native email which they then clarified would be q4 and the initial miss of 17 days on launch.... what promises, promises?

br14

Jim Balsillie yesterday rather foolishly made all manner of claims in an interview to the Financial Post newspaper in Toronto. Included in the claims were the following...

"We’ve leapfrogged everyone with what we’re announcing tomorrow and you’re going to see it on display"

There was some cool stuff on display today, but "leapfrogged everyone" - I don't think so.

Jim is rapidly losing credibility. Actually I think what credibility he had might already be lost.

http://business.financialpost.com/2011/10/17/rim-co-ceo-jim-balsillie-we...

balding1

If they release nothing this week they deserve every negative comment from peeps.
Guess Mr. Balsillie played leapfrog in reverse as a kid because that's what gear BB is in.

ryanlrobinson

It will work for non-devs, but there won't be much new that you'll actually care about. Stuff like native apps aren't going to be on it anyway from what the page says.

checkyoulater

As long as anyone can confirm that browsing, music, and video will work i'll take it, that's all i really use my PB for anyway

djtaube

You mean, that's all you really can use your PB for anyway, right?

At least that's how I feel when I answer questions in comparison of iOS or Android.

the brother

This reminds me of BB7. You can have it, install it and it does wonderful shit....but it doesn't work with your current apps. You will need to upgrade those..................when they become available.

WHAT THE #$%?

Superfly_FR

Cant' wait to see it on my PB. BUT warning folks: this IS NOT for every day use, no end-user application included. Stay calm :D

buzzon

Says invalid pin when I try to download it.... Do you have to register as a developer, then enter your pin in there?

OneSlyFox

I'm getting the same message and I'm a developer for the PlayBook...for now, anyways. :|

Donnee

its case sensitive so make sure you have the caps in :)

pushfan

RIM has no credibility left. Empty promises from CEOs make you understand the desire to change leadership. What are we shooting for now for 2.0, Spring?

PLTM

i dont know if you guys notices, but the devcon webcast, the devices they are using are on version 2.0, so they are close to release. I noticed the Video Store on there also.

balding1

Rims stock is up 2.5 % because investors are looking for news of a software upgrade for the company's PlayBook tablet and information about its next-generation BlackBerry, which will operate on the new QNX system.
Lets see what the stocks are worth by the end of week? lol

djtaube

Very true. It wont really matter if everyone bails on RIM and THEN they release what they believe to be amazing.

Yamcha

A bit disappointed that OS 2 hasn't been released yet..

world traveler and former ceo

RIM is making major strides!! .. massive new features and functionality are in the process of being rolled out to the Playbook!! ... Its an iterative process!! ... This is a developers conference .. day 1!

Great things are imminent ... the professionals can see it! ...

decypher44

Please tell me I'm supposed to be reading that with a sarcastic inflection. :)

djtaube

Which professionals? The developers I assume is what you refer to due to the ease of development strides RIM has tried to make. However, what is the situation going to be when RIM hasn't even finished developing their Tablet OS to have email and calendar for the actual business professionals?

I would love to hear the debate for buying a PlayBook right now over an iPad and I have owned the 16GB PlayBook since shortly after release.

Giving great developer tools and environments right before the holiday season wont help BlackBerry sales why they develop their apps.

Spawn12

What the hell is the matter with you muppets?? RIM have said that OS 2 wont be made public until after Devcon...are all you really that stupid to think they would release it to the public...damn some of you douchebags need to go outside and get a life lol.

djtaube

I think the bigger frustration is that they were hoping for something and were in denial. The fact that it was stated for release "after" devcon can mean never... as far as the original release statements, there are still things that don't exist on the PB.

So, "after" doesn't mean anything and that's the frustration people are voicing more than anything it seems.

br14

The frustration is they claimed they were making huge announcements that would be ON DISPLAY.

Instead what we get is stuff that for the most part has been announced earlier.

In fact nothing new at all so far. Apart from learning that QNX will be BBX - but then even that had been leaked.

Thunderbuck

What WOULD be nice would be if we had some sense of just how long after DevCon it's going to take until we see 2.0...

I've looked at the emulator, though, and it's got some REALLY intriguing pieces. For instance, while the native e-mail/PIM isn't resident, in the system settings there's a new category for e-mail/social media accounts.

I WAS able to sign into my Gmail account, and the alerter said I had a couple hundred messages. I just couldn't actually SEE any of them :-)

dcgore

Did you get native email with this?

ciscobear

The leapfrog got knocked to hell out by the container truck of nothingness

checkyoulater

the demo videos look wicked, the new UX tools are sick, but the deployment is far worse than on any other platform of late. I can't understand why they couldn't have released v2.0 sooner and made all those snazzy upgrades available for OS3.0, that way basic functionality that EVERYONE is looking for, is finally satiated.

i'm hoping those new cascade things make for cooler RSS readers, i can't wait to use my PB for anything other than the occasional browsing and video

alpinechem

I am very dissapointed with RIM. Now investors can saves this company by kicking those 2 motherfuckers Co- CEO out . Nothing positive ever comes out of those 2.

r0v3rT3N

VIDEO STORE?
Haven't heard of this before.
If it's any good the Playbook could get ahead.

br14

Announced at an earlier conference.

If they can deliver something in partnership with one of the online video delivery services it could be just the thing to help them "leapfrog" the competition.

Here's hoping. Though they generally make the announcements the first day.

Maybe they'll release stuff in time for Thanksgiving.

nasigorengpete

They only one i hope to be leapfrogged is Mr. Balsillie.
Someone fire him please!

Zippygit

Registered around 1:00 PM EST.. still not able to DL PB OS 2.0. Has anyone been able to yet?

john_kaufman

Nothing here yet. My expectation is that the 1 hour advertised on the page is optimistic on day one...

patpatiar

how many developers at RIM does it take to implement spell check on the playbook?

Siiid

i'll wait a bit longer...

checkyoulater

Been looking through the TAT demos both old and new, and it may seem that the absence of OS2 may have taken center stage, but the release of the native SDK with the TAT UI elements may well be enough to hold off non-believers

assuming...of course, there are indie developers that can churn out enough apps to appease the masses for the time being....

....will someone make a kick-ass, super responsive RSS reader with awesome UI elements please!

demzzy

this is such a big ass fail....

Reregister!

Re: When will we be able to Register for Beta 2.0
Options

There were issues with the registration system and some applications have been lost. I recommend everyone who signedup before now re-register to ensure that your application was not missed.

If your PIN contains letters, use upper case (fix coming for this).

If your email address is not accepted, leave it blank (fix coming for this too).

Just a quick heads up.

This was posted on the Developer support forums.

So anyone worried that their update hasn't yet become available needs to re-register.

CF

CreaturesFarley

Oops, double post. My bad.

carbon98accord

Someone needs to make a PlayBook Hybrid OS now. :)

alexp_9

just started my download 2 min ago
exited :)

jeremydizon

were you EXCITED or EXITed? lol

starfleet_k

so if i download this and try it out could i try it for a week or so then go back to 1.7??

igotberryfever

Running 2.0 . if anyone cant get the update to show try plugging your playbook in. i put it on the charger and bam the update came.

igotberryfever

it works like a charm. keyboard is a little different. all my apps work. everything works just no android apps or native stuff. i recommend to download.

igotberryfever

o wait the bridge mail and bbm or files dont work. :(

Bobcat665

A beta? I should've known...
It looks like it could be at least another month or two before this hits final release, then. If the OS2 RTM isn't out by the end of this year, things aren't going to be looking very good for either the PlayBook or RIM in general. It could be a disaster indeed. :(

tropenman

I am not a developer, but can't buy any apps, so i just put in my PIN and email, HOPPA its downloading now. and i will see what happens later.

Ruslan Botsyurko

EVERYONE RE-REGISTER AND PLUG YOUR PLAYBOOK TO THE CHARGER - the update pops up immediately after you do so. Thx to user "igotberryfever" for this tip, cat wait for the update to download.

john_kaufman

I'm up on 2.0, bridge works fine with my 9780/T-mobile

rexrim

have u try bbm via ur playbook when bridge sir? share some experience..smooth or still got delay like os 1.7?

john_kaufman

Damn! I don't have any Bluetooth gadgets with me, but it looks like AD2P finally works - my Phone shows AV control :-)

igotberryfever

No dice my friend.I just paired my bt headset. It says no services :(

TongueDar

That was easy. Registered, then about a minute later I checked for software updates and now it's downloading. :)

++

I found a few bugs with the folder when moving things around, but was able to get it resolved. Dead Space doesn't work, but I figured that would be the case based on the NDK notes on the download page, but all my other EA games work that were built natively, including Bejeweled.

Anyways, some really nice changes, but I honestly prefer the labeled tab system better to this approach and would have liked a further expansion of that, but with the added folders and tab customization.

And on the folders, they do work well outside of the bugs I encountered. At least they don't annoy me when they open and close like iOS's folder system -- even though it's similar -- as RIM refined the approach.

Bluetooth works better with my little thumb-keyboard, as key repeat works now, but it still disconnects and reconnects, so I'm not sure if it's the driver, or maybe my battery is just getting low.

Oh, and one thing that the browser absolutely needs, is a search in page.

checkyoulater

Still can't get bridge to work with my 9800, bummer, that's definitely a deal breaker. i'll try a few things but if bridge can't work there's no reason for me to use OS2.0.....i don't mind not having native mail yet, but losing bridge is nuts

well....it seems as if the bridge apps are a bust, but while connected i can still browse using the regular browser...

BlackBerry Brian

I am in the same boat, bridge apps give a server error.

The only think I can think of is we need a new bridge app for the phone.

I have a friend with a OS7 phone and his works fine.

I hope someone figures this out soon, I love everything else about 2.0 but broken bridge apps is a deal breaker.

echomouse

my 9900 bridge doesn't work, but I don't think it is suppose to with this beta version, One thing I did notice is the Kobo app is screwed up, pages are all messed. anyone else have this problem?

*Never mind kobo seems to be working fine. must have needed some time to work the bugs out of it haha. just closed it and opened it again and works fine. everything in OS2 seems to be pretty good. big fan of the folders. and insted of tryin to do a guess touch in the middle of the word to edit a certin letter theres an edit arrow that u can move to the exact spot.

strikeIII

Bridge apps work fine from my Torch 9810.

thymaster

It's available people. Read the article carefully. Click the link and enter your PIN and email and they will give you the green light to try 2.0.

1lomeri

I'm going to try it out, i just ensured that i backed up my device beforehand. I'm not a developer but I couldn't resist trying it out! Ill probably switch back after i try it out but still. 31% done, the anticipation is at an all time high!

Gelzz

Is anyone having trouble accessing to Email and BBM through BB Bridge with the new OS 2.0 ??

lrzintsm

i get a "Server Error" with my 9850. Re-installed the bridge app and re-did the Bluetooth connection. It shows connected but no data transfer.

logan

juliankueh

So what native apps do work? Music? Videos, pictures, browser, bridge.....????

crackberrytraitor

Haha I think Kevin now owes some kid 20 bucks. He was sure the guy's source was wrong and bet him playbook OS 2 wouldn't be avalible to the public today, lol.

Maxxberry

WARNING!!! (if you used your blackberry ID email address for this OS2 download/trial.)

I got 2.0. Played with it. Liked it. Learned from it. Now I want to go back to OS1 so all my needed apps can work. BUT.... Once you successfully downgrade, the setup process for OS1 demands your Blackberry ID email, if you also used it for the OS2 upgrade, then you will instantly be taken through the software update back to OS2 with no way to stop the loop. downgrade->upgrade->repeat.

I called RIM. 2 hours on the phone and tier 2 support yields the following answer: We are aware of this issue and have raised your ticket to 'critical'. We will be contacting you within a week with a solution.

Just one question: The OS2 registration page actually lists where to get downgrade instructions: didn't anyone test it before releasing this on unsuspecting developers. (just sayin')

Oh well...Here's hoping for a quick turn around.

yukiyuli

WTF..... beta for developer only, when can public user have it? after devcon for sure, probably a year after. RIM please stop fooling us!!!!

Crackberrykills

The Leapfrog comment from Ballsillie has not been realized at Devcon yet. I am hoping it happens either today or tomorrow. This developer release has good points and bad. The bridge function works, but not as well as it should. Most of the apps still work also. I am hoping to see some TAT work on the UI when the finished version arrives. This seems rather basic, but that is to be expected since it is a beta release. As the bobblehead guy pointed out, this is more of a behind the scenes for the developer release.

drsweat

I can't even get it to downgrade. Opened up Desktop Manager and it sees it as an unknown device. I go to the update option and it just spins. I left it running for 6 hours last night only to wake to it doing the same things. Any help?

drsweat

finally got it to recognize the playbook, tells me there are no updates, did a security wipe on the playbook and it reloaded OS2, hooked back into laptop and ran desktop manager, still no updates. Reloaded backup and still on OS2.

drsweat

Yeah, I had read that prior to posting. I thought that I had only used my PIN but maybe I didn't. Looks like my daughter is getting an OS2 Playbook when I get home and I'm taking hers.

drsweat

So as i sat and pondered how to get back to OS1, i thought of registering a new email address and blackberry id and boldly stated "they won't get the best of me by god". Well, they did. It reloaded OS2 and no updates in DM either. Oh well.

drsweat

So this finally worked. Turned the playbook off, hooked it to the laptop and started DM. It gave me the three options, clicked on update and away it went. Once it rebooted, I used the new email address I registered and when it went to check for updates, it pulled the lastest OS1 revision. I'm now on 1.0.7.3312....YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

drsweat

As a footnote, I then restored from my backup and it changed my BlackBerry ID back to my original one, put everything back just as it was pre OS2 update, and tells me no updates are available. Had to update a few apps but all is good.

waheeed

hey does anyone know if i install OS2, will my pictures and files get erased after the update?

lrzintsm

My pictures and pdf files survived the update.
Logan

davidloz

Is anyone else having bridging issues since loading os2? if so how did you fix it?

Aljreeh Mob

I hope that was not everything ......
