Seems as though the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is getting OS love from lots of carriers these days. While not on par with that of folks on Rogers in Canada, AT&T has just released their latest approved OS. 5.0.0.602 is now officially available via their BlackBerry downloads page. If you're still running the stock OS on your 9700 for AT&T you'll want to look into this one. Thanks cc999!
That's great. I've been out of the loop for a while but is there ever going to be an OS 5 release for the original Bold 9000???
All I see on the link is Desktop Software, EMR Patch and Enterprise Server...where is the OS??
Where it lists all the devices...click on 9700 and scroll to the bottom.
Checked DM and Wireless Update on my BB, haven't seen jack show up for this yet. Ill have to recheck in the morning, might be too early for everything to catch up...

Maybe it's just cause I'm OCD when it comes to OS's, but I cant honestly imagine running a stock carrier OS. If i let T-Mobile have their way, I'd still be rocking .586. But instead I'm on .743

The upper right MUTE button is NOT de-activated, it is still a MUTE button that silences your calls. Obviously you're referring to the previous Standby feature. Yes that's gonzo.
This change is supposedly permanent. Kinda makes more sense to not have 2 lock-type buttons, but we all have our habits… (But I really hope they add back the Owner info to the non-password Lock screen.)

You have to decide, are you NEVER going to upgrade, because this isn't changing.
Is the standby feature disabled? By accident I was muting Pandora this morning and when I went to look at my phone later it asked me to hit the mute button to take it out of standby. I realized I must've held it down too long and put it in standby. I just tested and this also works with the new OS released today. Hold down the mute button and it goes into standby.
As for owner info, do you mean when you hit the lock button it doesn't display your owner info? The lock screen shows mine, but I don't have a password set to test otherwise.
Well I'm at work currently. But as soon as I get home and back my phone up this is going on it. I'll let ya know what changes I see.
I couldn't get this to install on my Rogers phone so I contacted them. I was told that it hasn't been tested yet by Rogers and that they would email me when it was available. It's not on their website or available on the wireless update feature on my phone either.
What's the deal then??? And how come my desktop manager won't recognize that I only have .351?
This is the official for att that's why they tell you that. The official build for rogers on the 9700 is now .743. Talk to them about that.

These ver numbers don't match the crackberry post, and when I am downloading it I get a posted date of dec 12 2009? What am i missing?
Does anyone know why this does not show up when I try to download it OTA through Wireless Update on my handheld? I get the no new update available. I can't download DM on my work computer, so wondering how to get the update on my BB.
Is your BB provided by work? It's possible they need to approve the update. I run a BES Express server and had to initiate a refresh for device software. After I did that, the update notification popped up on my device in seconds. Before that I had the same problem. Figured it'd be searching AT&T's available software, but I guess it was looking at my server's instead.
Does anybody have a list of changes/improvements/deletions caused by this ATT OS update? Is it worth the hassle (I'm currently on V .405)?
I would probably have to redo my folders and stuff.
You shouldn't have to worry about folder moving and stuff. Just back your stuff before you proceed just in case.
when you do an update, usually i just let the application update automatically back up my current settings. which means you don't have to move stuff back and forth when you update it. i also to decided to make a backup folder to where i know where the back ups will be placed ie. my documents > blackberry back up. i delete them after a month cause i update it quite frequently, if i dont like the OS update.

So I downloaded the new OS for the ATT website by my DM is not picking it up that there is a new version when updating the device. I know there is another way to launch the update. How do we did it again? I forgot! lol

Were do I go to delete the carrier software if I want to to this ATT update? I'm on TMobile and hate this .586 from them! When I download to desk I don't see where to go in and look for it! It just wants to download it straight to phone!

When I saw this article I verified it on my device then I went to Blackberry Desktop Manager and Desktop Manager didn't register it so I'm now performing the update OTA. It is official I don't know why Desktop Manager is not registering it though.

Remember to delete the "vendor.xml" file (located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader) -- otherwise, the update will not be visible.

how long did it take for your device to find the available upgrade OTA when the request was sent out? I sent a request and it has now been 18 mins, waiting for my bb to tell me something
Clicking on the official download listed here takes me to AT&T site that shows the .405 upgrade. What am I missing?
Once you click the link here......Scroll to the bottom and you will see the updated software that is available. Did mine as a Wireless update this morning and worked just fine. Also fixed the missing APP WORLD ICON problem from earlier in the week. Thank you for the link and info CRACKBERRY!!

I was gonna do the OTA, but the message said that I may not be able to use my BB for several hours. Approximately how long were you OTA downloaders without use of your phones?
yeah i was worried about that also but i decided to do it anyway.. it took id say about 30-45 mins tops
I tried to do the OTA and an hour later it was stuck at 69% and showed time elapsed of 5 minutes. Guess I'll do it online.
Other than downloading the files to a PC or attempting to download through the device (which says no update available), are there any other options to get the new OS? I'm on BES and this may be why I can't get the download from my device.
Did the OTA update. It took about an hour to complete. The time largely depends on how much data needs backing up
I did the OTA upload and now my BB is stuck on the black screen that reads BLACKBERRY and has the little white bar underneath. My red light is also blinking. I did a battery pull but it made no difference. Suggestions? Help?

Sorry I have been at work all day! 1st I hate the lock key not being on top...I used that everyday! 2nd my screen takes time to turn on when I use my phone! Some times 30 sec! I have done the update 3 times. And my cell service hasn't got any better! Said it would but in OC it drops more calls now!
when i updated i was having problems with my internet, bbm, and dropped calls (like you i was having a lot of dropped calls) but i just turned off the phone pulled the battery out put it back in and everything was fixed i even got my bbappworld back and 4mb more then i originally had of internal memory
No worries. And yes, I'm having similar issues -- that wakeup time delay, getting temporarily locked out of certain SMS threads (until I do a soft reset or something), dropped calls due to the 3G/UMA switch, and "phantom scrolling" on my trackpad. -_-
I did an OTA this morning. Said it would take several hours. But being on the fastest 3G network ;-) it went by pretty quick. I haven't noticed much change. It seems to run a lot smoother speed wise. It did mess up Bing so I had to re install that. My phone also shows no programs in my app world. And since I had just updated to the newer app world this kinda makes me upset. Cuz after I had done that it messed so I reset my phone restored it got my apps back. But hey at least the app are all on my phone and running well just with the exception of Bing. If I do notice more I will add more. And if anyone else notice those items let me know. I have now also noticed my ticket master app icon is missing. And I can't get it to show.
When using DM, download the desired OS, deleted the Vendor.xml file if its a non-carrier issued OS/leaked, then disconnect your Internet Connection and DM will find the new OS.
After trying to load OS's through DM 5 times, I decided to try using the OTA Download. The download didn't take but about a few minutes download and it took about 45 mins - an 1 hour for the backup and load process. I started this at around 1 o'clock pm yesterday and the Restore Process has been running all day long. Here it is Midnight and the over all progress is only at 19%. I have a few groups and about 20 or 30 BBM contacts so I figured it may take a while, but holy hell this is getting a little annoying. Is there anything that I can do, or should i just let it sit and hope like everything it finishes?
No issues here. 45 Mins OTA to get up and running.
Like I say i figure because I have as many groups and contacts that I have it might take it a while for restore all of it, so all i can do is wait. The elapsed time timer is running still so at least its active. Glad I have my iPhone.
My phone has been out of commission ever since i have tried this upgrade. I have been on the phone with RIM for HOURS. I have a corrupted file and i cant get my phone back.
THE KICKER----the ONLY thing in this upgrade was the addition of japanese language. THATS IT!!! nothing else.
These guys on crackberry make it seem like these updates do SOOOO many things and 9 times out of ten all they do is add a language. Dont waste your time.
I did the update thru DM not OTA, went pretty smoothly I have to say. I had been on the original build .296 that came with the phone and was kinda nervous about doing a "leaked" update and wanted to wait for an official one from AT&T - finally! I hope I'm not jumping the gun but this build made some improvements in my phones performance that I hope last. For starters my free memory had been hovering around 55mb and now with out deleting anything its hanging around 95mb. Again hope that holds up. Just a few other comments - had a problem where about every third call would appear to go thru and the other person answered but I couldn't hear them and would have to hang up and try again - that hasn't happened yet since, also alot of time when I would hang up from a call, it wouldn't disconnect right away, I'd get the timer icon thingy in the middle and it would take a long time to actually end the call - that hasnt happened since, and also it seems pictures load up on my screen when I go to view previously taken pictures ALOT faster than before. Thats all so far but this update has made my phone seem new again and taken away some annoyances for me. Again - hope these improvements last! Thanks for reading!
How much time did you spend downloading and installing through DM? I'm doing it right now.
UPDATE: I installed it using DM, but took longer than expected because when you are in the "backing up data" phase and the "restoring data" phase, you need to re-enter the password on the blackberry device, then the data will back up or restore. I was waiting forever during the "back up" and "restore" phase, so I entered my password on my BB device to see what would happen. This was my first OS update since I became a BB owner in January. Future OS updates should take less time now that I've done it once already!
I have BB 9700 for ATT with v5.0.0.405 I'm wondering if it's even worth upgrading when I new 6.0 is on the way sometime this summer? Is this update just to fix a few patches or what?
its just an applications update nothing really exciting, also! this OS update made my phone restart several times. i never had a problem with any other OS update that would randomly make my phone restart.
I did a Soft Reset while the Update was running. The restore process restarted and then it was down within like 10 minutes. So far i've noticed an increase in memory. I went from about 80mbs up to 100mbs. Gotta see what the battery life looks like.
It seemed to install ok, but it wiped our all my licenses for purchased programs, as well as my configuration for QuickPull. I tried restoring from a backup I made just before the upgrade but no joy. :(

Can't get facebook to work since the upgrade. It tells me I have no permission to post things. I can log in and read, but cannot post, comment, etc.
Backup apps backup data to external disc - remove micro sd -
install new os to DM install os to device - remember this is for AT&T devices you may have issues with devices from other carriers - Crackberry has a very good post on how to backup 3rd party apps using device switch in DM

So far i noticed a few things with this OS. I just noticed that when i tried to send a pic to twitter the option was not there, it usually has MMS, email and facebook or PIN, i just noticed that the twitter option wasn't there, other than that i did notice that i did also have some more memory, with my current apps i had about 100 to 109, and after i had 115 right off the bat.
It does run smoother and frees up about 20 megs. I guarantee that so called late summer release is going to slip into an early fall release and then be rescheduled as your Christmas gift from RIM.
How is the battery life on .602 compared to .405?
I am always all for software upgrades, but whats the point. What gets changed for us on this one?
I load the .602 OS to my 9700 the day after it came out for ATT. Now I find my blackberry freezing while I am writing a text message, but only for a brief few seconds. I also hate the fact on any OS download you have to re register all your applications...pain in the arse!
I had problems with the new 5.0.0.602 update, so I reverted back to the 5.0.0.405 version.
Google Maps 4.2: It couldn't find my location, using the GPS. The closest it ever got was 1100 meters. Reverting back, Google Maps is able to find my location.
Ticketmaster (ECOE) 1.1.1.9: It couldn't sign-in and it would retain my location preference. At the top of each page, it stated that I needed to turn on the javascript and turn on cookies. In the Blackberry Browser, it was all checked. Reverting back, I do not have these problems.

I have a question, how did you revert your bold back to it's original OS? I am having problems with v5.0.0.680. It has removed my GPS, notepads, games that came with the phone. The lock key at the top is messed up. Can you please get back to me as soon as possible, I would really appreciate the help. :)
