Official OS 5.0.0.438 for the BlackBerry Curve 8330 from Boost Mobile
Yesterday we noted that the Curve 8330 from Boost Mobile was shipping with OS 5.0.0.438, and now it looks like its officially available for download. 8330 users can jump over to the BlackBerry Software Downloads page and snag the latest update. If you're not on Boost, just remember to delete the vendor.xml file before upgrading and you should be good to go. Glad to see that the 5.0 updates are floating in from various carriers, but as with most of you, yes I'm still wondering when we'll see another official release for the Tour :-)
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 11:53 am
I know all the 8330 users are gonna be happy
chochopr Jan 23, 2010 at 5:41 am
we been through this already with the same 8330, cause when it came out for I believe it was Sprint or Nextel it had around the same version but when ppl got it, the phone was the same old platform version as the other ones, and the only reason why I think the OS is a higher version for this BB is because it's a Walkie-Talkie type phone. I mean correct me if I'm wrong.
But I do remember reading something like this b4 a while back from crackberry and of course ppl was still whining but little did they know that the phone needed that upgrade but the same old platform because of the walkie-talkie app/button on the side.

Tour whiners in 3...2...1...
wcmarchese Jan 22, 2010 at 11:56 am
hahahahahahaha
But the Tour whiner, me, came after a legit 8330 comment.

All the Tour owners should be happy we have the .419 leak and its official as well. I am very happy my Tour is like a whole new phone since the upgrade from 4.7 I hated my Tour then now I'm back in love with Blackberry
tavella Jan 22, 2010 at 11:54 am
Will this work on both the 8330 and 8330M or just the 8330?
W1nks Jan 22, 2010 at 11:55 am
I was wondering the same. I don't think it does though.
wcmarchese Jan 22, 2010 at 11:55 am
That's funny, I remember when I was waiting forever for the 4.5 for the 8330, now the 5.0 comes out and for that model before the TOUR???
Hilarious.

qwiksilver Jan 22, 2010 at 12:02 pm
I thought MTS released the 5.0 for the tour a couple days back. I even downloaded it from blackberry. is there something more official than that? nice about this for the 8330. will it work for the 8330m?
devil24 Jan 22, 2010 at 12:05 pm
8330 and 8330m are different beasts.
Dominick079 Jan 22, 2010 at 12:05 pm

josh_johnson11 Jan 22, 2010 at 12:22 pm
Is Boost Mobile a GSM or CDMA network? Will this download work with my Sprint 8330?
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Yes it will. Boost actually is IDEN not CDMA or GSM from my knowledge. Uses sim card but still runs off CDMA if you will.
joshua.worth Jan 22, 2010 at 10:14 pm
If you have the 8330 or the 8330m
K9LEE Jan 25, 2010 at 6:57 am
YES IT WILL WORK ON SPRINT, WITHOUT CHANING ANYTHING OR ALTERING THE OS
Cobra46 Jan 22, 2010 at 12:44 pm
Boost is a CDMA network. My guess is that all Boost Curves are of the 8330M variety. Sprint stopped selling 8330's around a year ago andthe 8330M came out. This was due to a patent infingement that forced RIM to use a different chipset. If your BB has a MEID instead of ESN, you have the new chipset, which all new CDMA BBs have.
CybermatriX Jan 22, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Literally a slap in the face for Sprint customers. I think Sprint is never gonna release it for us 8330/8330m owners. My reasoning behind this is, there's a new Curve out, they want customers to upgrade to that so they lock us into another 1-2 year contract. 'Cause if they released if for the 8330/8330m it would probably delay their post-paid customers from upgrading for sometime.
jmlowes Jan 22, 2010 at 1:01 pm
I have been so looking forward to this for quite some time.
Anyway, for some reason the desktop manager won't install this OS for me. It sees it and if I select it I get a "No software update is required for your device." message in AppLoader.
My CDMA Curve 8330 is currently running 4.5.0.169, which I installed previously using this same method.
Any ideas as to why this isn't working for me?
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 1:11 pm
Did you delete the Vendor.xml file?
jmlowes Jan 22, 2010 at 1:14 pm
I did delete the vendor.xml file.
The update appears to be installing now. I ran the Loader app instead of going through Desktop Manager and it looks much happier.
Thanks.
Cobra46 Jan 22, 2010 at 1:13 pm
and is your 8330 an M model or not?
jmlowes Jan 22, 2010 at 1:15 pm
Not an M model.
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 1:16 pm
Make sure there is no other OS installed on your computer. And use AppLoader insted of DM. Apploader is found where you found the vendor.xml
AllEyezOnD Jan 23, 2010 at 2:32 pm
ok so i have apploader open, and clicked on the add button, but were do i find the os at
jmlowes Jan 22, 2010 at 3:27 pm
Yippeeee! I got it installed and everything is working great. Now I need to reinstall some apps.
K9LEE Jan 25, 2010 at 6:59 am
ARE YOU RUNNING ON A SPRINT? IF NOT DELETE THE VENDOR.XML IN C:/PROGRAMS/COMMON/REASERCHINMOTION/LOADER
THEN RUN THE LOADER.EXE ICON IN SAME FILE
mdalgart Jan 22, 2010 at 1:15 pm
No Idea why, with a 5.0 OS already seen by Boost, but Verizon has an OS update to 4.5.0.175 posted yesterday.
Does this make sense to ANYONE???
natescurve Jan 22, 2010 at 1:35 pm
This will seem like a stupid question I'm sure, but what are the benefits to upgrading to the new OS 5.0.0.438?
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:26 pm
better features. Go to blackberry site for details
K9LEE Jan 25, 2010 at 7:01 am
MAINLY THREADED CHAT AND AS TIME GOES BY, VENDORS WONT WRITE FOR OLD OS. ALSO THERE ARE SOME MINOR CHANGES, LIKE GENERAL SETTINGS THAT ARE EASIER TO USE, AND ONLY ONE "INBOX" WHERE ALL YOUR EMAILS GO
agaldo81 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Which file is that?
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:25 pm
which can be found after you install the software on your PC under computer/c:/program files/common files/research in motion/apploader.
agaldo81 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:28 pm
thanks going to give it a shot now
agaldo81 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:34 pm
Just ran the install and nothing happened.
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 3:11 pm

lphil24 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:06 pm
is there any danger or issues with downloading this OS on a sprint phone? do i have to do anything differently?
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Make sure you delete the vendor.xml file. which can be found after you install the software on your PC under computer/c:/program files/common files/research in motion/apploader.
benpierce Jan 22, 2010 at 2:11 pm
I don't know enough about OS's - does anyone know if this OS would be compatible with an 8320, or is it strictly an 8330 OS??
Thanks!
tae_254 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:26 pm
its only for the 8330
sudbury78 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:27 pm
I am not very tech savvy so is this possible or worth using on Verizon? thx!
Cobra46 Jan 22, 2010 at 2:38 pm
This all depends on whether this version is for an 8330 or 8330M (can someone verify) and which version you have.
benwkh Jan 22, 2010 at 2:37 pm
does this come with the game word mole?

I installed this on my friends VZW 8330 successfully, unfortunately it has no Tour/Curve2 theme, it looks no different than any 4.5 phone. It does have threaded sms and other features im not thinking of, but the old theme is really throwing me off right now. Will prob go back to the hybrid 5.0 for the curve
charlierh2 Jan 22, 2010 at 3:33 pm
I'm loading this on my Sprint 8330 now... I'll report back once it's finished.

mdmitchell13 Jan 22, 2010 at 4:05 pm
That's exactly what I figured
raider220 Jan 22, 2010 at 4:11 pm
loaded it on my verizon 8330 and is working good, a few new things that are pretty cool!
Hey_Daniel Jan 22, 2010 at 4:29 pm
How can you try and tell me that the Blackberry Curve 8330, has a higher release number then the Blackberry Curve 8900 and the Blackberry Bold 9000... That is a joke to the nation...
What are RIM playing at here
MrShawn Jan 22, 2010 at 4:36 pm
If I load this on a Verizon one does it look like 4.5 or like then newer ones?
jbenrn Jan 22, 2010 at 4:47 pm
All you whiners need to get a life. Who cares if Sprint doesn't release it on their network?! I have a Sprint Tour and added the MTS 5.0 OS. It works beautifully and I have no real complaints. My wife still has an 8330 and I'm going to load this up tonight. I could really care less who is releasing it. It won't really make that much of a difference, if any, anyway. Now stop crying and get over yourselves.
Flawson Jan 22, 2010 at 5:23 pm
Kinda hard to call others whiners for not getting ice cream when you have a cone in each hand...I feel pretty valid in being disappointed about the fact that I have an 8330m and will apparently (so it seems)not get my ice cream...as far as getting a life, we are all here posting on and reading crackberry.com, so...
:P
kraziebeast Jan 22, 2010 at 6:30 pm
thank you. i just recently acquired this 8330m, and its been hell waiting to get and update. if any one has the RIGHT to whine.. it is us. flawson ftw.
blcole666 Jan 22, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Ok, i downloaded the update, however i cannot locate it on my computer to remove the vendor file, feeling kinda dumb, where am i going wrong?
jwmedic Jan 22, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Just wondering if its cool to do ? I did just backup everything just in case.
charlierh2 Jan 22, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Loaded up and running great. Some 3rd party apps are less responsive than on 4.5 but nothing has been incompatible. I'm sure it can only get better from here.
This is an official release, so I don't see much reason not to update if you would like the new features, etc.

I was wondering if someone could help me. I am a verizon customer and have an 8330 curve. I downloaded the os 5.0v from the blackberry site and deleted the xml file. When i run blackberry desktop manager the software sees the new os 5.0v but when I try to install the software on my phone it wont process. Does anyone have any ideas?
thanks so much!

Seriously the 8900 should've gotten the update by now and I still have 16 months on my contract I'm only 1/3 of the way done
TonyNJ13 Jan 22, 2010 at 6:38 pm
I must be missing something.
I deleted the vendor.xml now what is my next step(s)?
penspuck14 Jan 22, 2010 at 6:47 pm
I got the os installed and everything seems to be fine, except for I heard some beeps while on a call and now I cannot set the alarm clock. I am using a vzw 8330. Anybody have an idea about the alarm clock issue. All the rest of the clock features work as fine.
sylvio13 Jan 22, 2010 at 7:43 pm
Installed on pc great. Used app loader to install on device, went fast and smooth, App loader completed. Device started to load and is now frozen on the start up screen, at about 65%.
Any suggestions?
penspuck14 Jan 22, 2010 at 7:53 pm
This can take a little bit of time mine took about 20 min to boot up the first time. I suppose if it takes longer than a half hour try a batt pull. Hope this helps.
sylvio13 Jan 22, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Just be patient. I am not. Loaded very slow. Now is on and working.
Spaceheater Jan 22, 2010 at 7:49 pm
I installed this on my vzw 8330 and the GPS doesn't work in BB maps. It worked fine before. Location is on, does anyone have any ideas?
gdubb22#cb Jan 24, 2010 at 12:57 am
Any luck with getting the GPS to work with os 5.0.0.438 on the verizon 8330? I have the same issue.
j.p.hatfield Jan 22, 2010 at 8:01 pm
slow loader...give it time...
mrpaulc Jan 22, 2010 at 8:04 pm
I just updated my Verizon 8330 and it works great! I was a little scarey for a while when I first installed it. I got a fatal error on my PC and the status bar took close to 30 minutes to complete. Then my Blackberry restarted and it was good to go.
It seems faster, though that could just be my imagination, and the threaded SMS is great! It has a much cleaner look and feel IMO.
penspuck14 Jan 22, 2010 at 8:15 pm
How did you install it? I see some trouble with the gps and i have had trouble with the alarm clock not being able to be set. Any info will be of help.
edit-- my gps doesn't work either got not unable to aquire satellites
mscann Jan 22, 2010 at 8:23 pm
Blackberry is soo slow, and my bottom dock 8900 style theme doesnt work on the homepage. Might go back to 4.5
geekpro Jan 22, 2010 at 8:41 pm
This OS installed fine on my Sprint BB 8330. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate. I ran the Loader.exe after deleting the Vendor.xml file. Took about 35 minutes, worked like a charm. I have Sprint Navigation, which uses internal GPS and it's also working fine. All I needed to add was the Precision Zen Theme, which I mentioned in an earlier post. Sweet!!
TonyNJ13 Jan 22, 2010 at 8:51 pm
I have Sprint too, but I am not sure what to do after deleting vendor.xml. I have tried using the Desktop Manager and the App Loader by itself, but neither picks up anything. Any ideas?
geekpro Jan 22, 2010 at 10:08 pm
Well, I had folder named AppLoader before I started, which I renamed to AppLoader0 before opening the new OS exe file that I downloaded. Maybe you need to either do that first or delete it before opening the OS file.
TonyNJ13 Jan 22, 2010 at 10:52 pm
Then what please?
geekpro Jan 22, 2010 at 11:12 pm
Then, I just ran the Loader.exe inside the new AppLoader folder, with the device connected via the USB cable.
TonyNJ13 Jan 22, 2010 at 11:27 pm
Ok thank you so much!!!
Unfortunately nothing happens when I do that.
Oh well.
geekpro Jan 22, 2010 at 11:34 pm
I suggest you try the whole process from the beginning on a different machine....
penspuck14 Jan 22, 2010 at 8:43 pm
I decided to try a total wipe of the device using bbsak and I used crackmem to clean up the os. I will report how well this works for my vzw 8330 and if I still have the issues I was having.
penspuck14 Jan 22, 2010 at 9:38 pm
I tried the total wipe of my 8330 and after reloading all my apps (bbsak) and my actual back up I am still in the same boat. so I am going to wait for the official vzw update unfortunatle i am downgrading to there newest os :(. If anybody else has any luck please post with how you did it. Thanks in advance!
sg4real76 Jan 22, 2010 at 9:29 pm
im having trouble trying to download this for my 8330 curve. i went to the bb site and downloaded the 5.0 update for boost mobile. now what do i do next? email me sg1ofakind@hotmail.com
penspuck14 Jan 22, 2010 at 10:25 pm
You have to install the os on your pc then conncet your blackberry and either use the desktop manager/apploader or a 3rd party app to install the os on the phone. So far I have had no luck with my vzw 8330, alarm clock cannot be set and no gps so hopefully u have better luck than me.
-STALKER- Jan 28, 2010 at 8:55 pm
Im on Sprint and was having the same problem with the alarm. Turns out my theme wasnt compatible with 5.0. Once I changed the theme it worked just fine.

Irish0317 Jan 23, 2010 at 1:44 am
ok when it says update browse for the file. you have to find it. go to the file Research In Motion. then go to shared/loader files, then your version show be there click it. scroll down and find the blackberry ALX file. double click that and it will find the rest for you. I hope that works for you.

I have the most up to date version for the sprint curve, then i heard about the boost moblie having a 5.0 verison for the 8330. i downloaded it and then I did what everyone has been saying about the deleting of vender.xml file. So far everything worked great.I even got as far as the apploader finding in my comp and ready to upload, but when i go to upgrade it tells me ERROR I'm missing a file. " net.rim.platform.ecmascript " Please if any one could help i would love that.

yes boost mobile is now selling blackberry's but still boost will not let you rome like the other carriers do. So is it really worth going to boost mobile? can we take poll see how many people would go to or go back to boost mobile.

I installed this yesterday on my Curve and so far I love it. The improvements are nice and browsing the internet is definitely faster.
Someone mentioned above that they just installed it and the phone is sloooooow and hourglassing lots. I found this to be the case for the first little bit but now it is faster than it was before with 4.5. I think it must have still been doing some stuff in the background for a little while after the install. Give it some time before you judge the speed.
Anyway, I am thinking that 5.0 uses a fair bit more memory than 4.5 did. It stands to reason that it would, but it seems to use way more. After installing some of my favorite apps, I already have a low memory warning and need to remove apps to make room. This does truly suck as I still don't have all of the apps I would like.
Looking around I see that BBM is by far largest of all apps I have installed. I will remove it as I don't use if often and it takes the most space. However, this was never an issue in 4.5 and I had way more installed.
Anyway, this is just a heads up to those app junkies looking at running 5.0. You might be better off sticking with 4.5 unless you can keep your BB fairly lean.
The 3rd party apps I have installed are:
BlackStar
Google Maps
Google Mobile App
Google Sync
MaraTick
Mobipocket Reader
Nav4All
SocialScope Lite
WeatherEye
Update: Things are a little whacky. After a battery pull my free space went up to 20mb. This might signal a memory leak somewhere or something. I will have to investigate further.
Bold_until_Hybrid_Comes Jan 23, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Why is there an official 5.0 for this ancient/antique phone on a no name carrier while I have a Bold 9000 and there is still no official 5.0 for rogers for my phone? I will be upgrading to an android device shortly
studiorat Jan 23, 2010 at 1:26 pm

i have no clue were the apploader folder is,i have somthing that says application_loader.dll, but that is all, i do not see anything that says vendor.xml, i have a sprint phone
gtixpress#cb Jan 23, 2010 at 2:18 pm
Does the GPS still work on the phone? I know that was one issue with the hybrid 5.0 OS that is out there.
jmlowes Jan 23, 2010 at 2:41 pm
GPS is working perfectly.
CharlestonBB Jan 24, 2010 at 2:37 pm
mine didn't that's the main reason i switched back to 4.5. I couldnt do anything to get it to work in BBMaps. Although I don't use it often it has come in handy quite a few times when i needed directions somewhere.
autobrokerdave Jan 23, 2010 at 2:40 pm
Just got off the phone with Blackberry Technical Support for Sprint. I asked them why there is a OS 5.0 for Boost Mobile and not for Sprint and he told me it's a Network problem and there is no ETA. I guess it's just a waiting game for an official Sprint OS 5.0 to be released...
Dru Dizzown Jan 23, 2010 at 4:13 pm
I just downloaded OS 5.0 and everything seems to be working well. The only problem I have is that I can't get my wallpaper to load properly. When I set a pic as wallpaper, I can only see it on the top strip where the status bar is. The rest is still the original blackberry wallpaper. Does anyone know how to fix this?

i installed it on my verizon bb and it works fine. i lost all my contacts somehow and couldnt restore it but thats alright lol
jleffc Jan 23, 2010 at 6:47 pm
I downloaded the update, and deleted the vendor file, when i go update it on desktop manager, it says the device needs no os update. Please help me!
SpaceMonster Jan 23, 2010 at 6:53 pm
go back and delete the vendor file again. I had to keep redeleting it out. Oh yeah and disconnect from the internet. I kept getting the same problem as you and those two things fixed that. I have verizon too.
jleffc Jan 23, 2010 at 7:34 pm
Im still having no luck with it, i downloaded and and deleted it aswell the vendor file many times.
jmlowes Jan 23, 2010 at 7:59 pm
You should run the AppLoader instead of desktop manager. It is in the Program Files/Common Files/Research In Motion/AppLoader/ directory and is called Loader.exe. This is what I did after Desktop Manager let me down. It worked like a charm.
K9LEE Jan 24, 2010 at 8:18 am
YOU HAVE TO GO TO C:/PROGRAMFILES/COMMONFILES/RESEARCHINMOTION/SHARED/LOADER
THERE YOU'LL SEE A LITTLE ICON THAT SAYS LOADER.EXE JUST CLICK ON THAT. BTW, THIS MAY CASUE ALOT OF ISSUES ON THE VZN CURVE, AS ITS BUILT AROUND SPRINT NETWORK
doveberry8330 Jan 23, 2010 at 7:03 pm
HELP! i thought it would load with the desktop manager "update your device software" but it doesn't :S
cameron4789 Jan 27, 2010 at 2:08 am
Just run the AppLoader. It's a lot simpler
justcallmed Jan 23, 2010 at 7:53 pm
I've downloaded it to A Bell 8330. It took forever to complete the update, almost 2 hours. The only thing I notice is that it deleted my BBM. It seems to be clocking a whole lot. I'm gonna give it a chance for a couple of days to see. I may be going back to my official OS.
robr21 Jan 23, 2010 at 9:36 pm
I'm with you... none of my themes work, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they get upgraded. But there's an awful lot of hourglasses showing up. Slightly frustrating. But it'll get better as time goes on I'm sure.
justcallmed Jan 23, 2010 at 10:27 pm
Did the install delete your BBM? I love the speed of the browser and the threaded SMS but I can't live without my BBM. When I try and download via App world it just gives me a message that the download failed
paulms308#cb Jan 23, 2010 at 8:27 pm
so will this work on the 8330m? getting confused..
CharlestonBB Jan 24, 2010 at 2:41 pm
no, it will not work for the 8330m.
darylschneider Jan 23, 2010 at 10:27 pm
I finally installed it on my Alltel/Verizon 8330 this afternoon. Took hours to put back all the apps and when I finally got it done…….its slow as **** and GPS does not work. I’m too tired to put the old opp sys back on today but I will do it tomorrow because I cannot stand sitting and waiting every time I request something. Seems to be plenty of RAM left so that is not the issue. I’m thinking that RIM has screwed up. There is no sense in having 5.0 if its going to make all the apps this slow. Browswer is some better but got frustrated at waiting so long for everything so I just stopped playing with it. Anyone else had similar experience?
SpaceMonster Jan 23, 2010 at 11:55 pm
Works great for me. Everything on my phone seems to be running faster, even rebooting it is faster. But I did a total wipe on my phone before I loaded this OS. I have a Verizon 8330 curve.
gdubb22#cb Jan 24, 2010 at 1:33 am
Is your GPS working in bbmaps?
SpaceMonster Jan 24, 2010 at 3:03 am
OS 5.0 has a problem with gps anyway. But gps works fine on my Poynt and other apps.
K9LEE Jan 24, 2010 at 8:21 am
AFTER INSTALLING THE UPDATE YOU HAVE TO GO BACK IN AND TURN ON GPS. OPTIONS-ADVANCED OPTIONS-GPS-TURN LOCATION ON NEXT TO GPS SERVICES
OTHERWISE YOU GPS SOFTWARE DOESNT RUN
CharlestonBB Jan 24, 2010 at 2:43 pm
mines not. i went through every option to turn the gps on, and set all of bbmaps permissions to allow, but it still wouldn't work a bit. it kept saying that it couldnt locate any satellites, and i was outside in an open area without an obstructions.
SpaceMonster Jan 24, 2010 at 10:48 pm
I had the leaked version of the OS before this and gps did not work with bbmaps. I guess they never fixed it for the official release. Lame.
K9LEE Jan 25, 2010 at 7:05 am
DELETE BBMAPS, RESET PHONE BY ALT-RIGHTCAPS-DELETE AND REINSTALL BBMAPS BLACKBERRY.COM/MAPS GO INTO OPTIONS-ADVANCED OPTIONS-GPS-TURN LOCATION ON
Dru Dizzown Jan 24, 2010 at 12:16 am
Did anyone find a reason to why the alarm clock does not work? Is there a way to fix this problem?
justcallmed Jan 24, 2010 at 12:54 am
My alarm is working fine.
robr21 Jan 24, 2010 at 6:17 pm
The alarm works, but if you are a theme that is not updated for 5.0 then it will not display. We'll have to wait for some updated themes for this to work. If you go back to the default theme that game with your device, the calendar will work.
gdubb22#cb Jan 24, 2010 at 1:17 am
My alarm is working fine, but my GPS is not working in bbmaps. It is a great update. I admit it was slow when I first put it on, but it is working faster now especially with the imagining theme from the app world. Not having GPS is really frustrating though. Anyone have a clue how to fix this on a verizon 8330?
K9LEE Jan 24, 2010 at 8:14 am
GOT THIS UP AND RUNNING, WITH NO ISSUES ON MY SPRINT 8330 MEID MODEL. HAVE NO ISSUE WHAT SO EVER. AND SHOWING 24MMB AVAIL. A FEW INCONS ARE LARGER THAN NORMAL, BUT I BELEIVE THIS IS BECAUSE THE RELEASE HAS SOME 460X320 FILES IN IT. THE INET IS A LITTLE SLOWER THAN PREVIOUS RELEASE, BUT SEEMS TO RUN SAME SPEED AS WIFES 8520 5.0/SPRINT. THIS IS WHAT I DID:
DELETED ALL PREVIOUS OS FROM PC
DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL 5.0 FOR BOOST, RUN EXE
USED SHRINK OS- PER INSTRUCTIONS
DELETED ALL LANGAUGES (LEAVING ENGLISH ONLY)
DELETE HELP, VCAST, VZ NAV, VONDAPHONE, ALL IMS(YOU'LL HAVE TO REINSTALL ANYWAYS), THERE WAS NO VENDOR FILE
INSTALLED USING APP LOADER (NOT DESKTOP) DO THIS BY GOING TO C:/PROGRAMS/COMMONFILES/RESEARCH...MOTION/SHARED/LOADER
ALL THINGS SEEM TO RUN APPROPRIATELY, AND I ONLY NOTICED THAT QUICKPULL DOESNT WORK WITH 5.0, AS CAUSED ERROR AND I DELETED IT. (YOU CAN RESET BB BY HITTING ALT-RIGHT CAP KEY-DELETE ANYWAY, SO I DIDNT NEED IT)
MEMORY LOSS OVER 24 HRS WAS ONLY 2MB SO NOT BAD. OVERALL PRETTY IMPRESSED.
li2327 Jan 24, 2010 at 10:01 am
The Tour .419 works great. I hope the 8330 owners enjoy the 5.0 just as much.
dewaynef Jan 24, 2010 at 10:34 am
Why should I go to the hassle of upgrading to 5.0 on my Verizon 8330? What are the advantages?
NORE Jan 24, 2010 at 12:16 pm
ok so i intstalled 5.0 the day it was posted on crackberry it ran slow @ first now its on point lost bbm but reinstalled it via blackberry.com now my only issue is my folders i create folders and move my icons in to them well its not allowing me to do this any suggestions or just plain feedback is anyone else having this problem
NORE Jan 24, 2010 at 12:18 pm
lol i figured it out that quick
darylschneider Jan 24, 2010 at 12:20 pm
Looks like you found some instructions I did not. Can you post them here? How does one " shrink os" ? I did not see that instruction. Did delete the vendor file and I never install the other language items because they take up room and I don't need them.
Thanks!!
K9LEE Jan 25, 2010 at 6:56 am
http://forums.crackberry.com/f132/how-shrink-os-348769/
ALSO IF YOUR INSTALLING ON SPRINT 8330, I DONT THINK THE VENDOR.XML NEEDS TO BE DELETED. BOOST IS SPRINT AND THE VENDORL.XML ONLY TELLS THE PROGRAM WHAT TO INSTALL. SINCE BOOST IS A SPRINT PHONE, IT DOESNT MATTER.
IF YOU WANT MORE SPACE, YOU CAN DO THIS ALSO:
http://www.stinsonddog.com/optimize-your-bb-s-memory
(DO THIS BEFORE INSTALLING ANYTHING, AND SHRINK AN OS WILL REMOVE ALOT FOR YOU...NOTE THAT WHEN EDITING IN TEXT, YOU ARE CHANGING PROGRAMMING SO BE CAREFUL...IF YOU MESS UP, EXIT OUT WITHOUT SAVING OR DELTE AND REINSTALL THE OS ON YOUR PC. ALSO NOTE THAT YOU HAVE TO LOAD THIS OS WITH LOADER.EXE AND NOT DESKTOP MANAGER. THIS IS BECAUSE THE VENDOR.XML WILL DETECT YOUR PHONE AS OTHER THAN BOOST.
ptlafferty Feb 13, 2010 at 8:25 pm
K9LEE, you are the only one on this board I've seen with my specific situation that has claimed success. I've tried every iteration listed by everyone else (with/without vendor; with/without DM; with/without the stand-alone loader). I've got your same phone, but I can get no love from this official Boost release. I also saw a post that suggested that it won't work on x64 systems, so I tried it on an XP SP3 x86 machine running both the standalone loader and DM 4.5: no love in either case.
In all situations, the loader/DM inevitably only shows my installed apps. If I then select the "blackberry.alx" file installed by the boost exe, the list is populated with 5.0.0 apps, but when I make my selections and hit next, I end up with the following error: "The application "Blackberry 5.0.0 Core Applications" cannot be loaded because some required files are not available."
The loader files show as 83.8 MB on disk after installation. The downloaded exe file is 90.3 MB. Is that correct AFAYK? This is my first OS upgrade, but I'm not a tech noob, so I am a bit perplexed by this seemingly unexplained problem.
The only other glaring thing I can find is the difference between my experience and what is expected in this tutorial (http://www.berryreview.com/2010/01/31/how-to-upgrade-your-blackberry-ope...)
In this screenshot (http://cdn.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/ScreenHunter_11Jan...) it shows Blackberry 5.0.0 System Software AND Blackberry 5.0.0 Core Applications. My experiences thus far have ONLY included menus that show "Core Applications" and NEVER "System Software".
My best guess is that these are the "required files" that are not available. So my question, after all of that, is did you see both of those entries when you had your success? If not, any other ideas?
I'm running Win7 Pro x64 as my primary system, but as I said, I have access to a XP SP3 x86 machine if I need it.
Much thanks to you (or anyone else) that can unravel this mess for me!

Almost bought a new phone the other day. When I came home and logged on to CB, I found the new upgrade to 5. It works great on my Verizon 8330. It will give me more time to evaluate which phone I might want to get next :)

I have Verizon and have loaded many OS on my 9530 but for the life of me I cant get apploader or device mgr to recognize 5.0 on my wife's 8330. I have no other OS installed on my pc. Any help??
melharris0214 Feb 4, 2010 at 10:05 am
i had the same problem. make sure u delete the vendor file and disconnect from the internet cause the new bb desktop manager is made to keep u from loadin other carriers os. so if u arent connected the dm will pick it up.
bradlovesu Jan 24, 2010 at 2:21 pm
Any one know if there is going to be a update on the OS? i have 4.6.1.313 seems kinda old compared to the 5.0 for the 8330..
papaavi Jan 24, 2010 at 2:37 pm
First off... never installed an OS without my provided update from verizon. Having said that... I ran into a few headaches on my Macbook pro. First of all... DO NOT DO THIS UPDATE VIA VMWARE WINDOWS. Trust me. In the end after doing that... I had to wipe my memory with bbsak and restore the new OS 5.0 onto my phone with a native pc. VMWARE's hardware response time is too slow for the trick described on many forums to get your phone working again after its been "nuked". So if you're going to update, back your information up (thank god I did!).
The AFTERMATH:
OS 5.0 works just fine. I sense it working a little faster, but I've noticed that when adding applications in appworld, the memory gets very low a little time after the installation. I can only attribute this to a memory leak because when I do a battery pull, the memory comes back. Although the memory leak doesn't seem to slow down the phone, which is strange. And the phone does have a MUCH quicker response time when navigating through the phone.
Desite the headache of being lazy and not installing this thing the way described here on a NATIVE PC (or bootcamp partition), it was definitely worth every minute of trouble shooting. I'm sure you can install it on a virtual windows, but I am never doing that again.
SUMMARY: I did a clean install of OS 5.0 from boost and I am using a blackberry 8330 from Verizon. Everything works so far.
sexdog9 Jan 24, 2010 at 3:30 pm
IS your GPS working with BBMAPS?
sexdog9 Jan 24, 2010 at 3:56 pm
I like the new OS much more responsive then 4.5.175 but no GPS in BBMAPS:-(. By now Verizon should just unlock GPS on the 8330s
MrShawn Jan 24, 2010 at 5:05 pm
I put this on my VZW curve and it runs like my PPC6800 that I used to have, and that is most certainly not a good thing. I am getting rid of it, I can't do anything on my phone, it locks up and I am not a fan of this threaded SMS either. Maybe I am doing something wrong.
MrShawn Jan 24, 2010 at 6:15 pm
every time I try to put 4.5 back on it, it locks up, so I have had to wipe it with BBSAK, wow, this is a pain in the ass
RedBank Jan 24, 2010 at 9:21 pm
i put this on my moms VzW 8830 (without a problem btw) and it hour glasses for a few secs on everything.
the 8330 processor doesnt handle 5.0 too well. i even shrunk it b4 install. no 3rd party apps used either except for facebook.
gotta drop down to 175...
oh well
sexdog9 Jan 24, 2010 at 10:40 pm
All my apps work.
sylvio13 Jan 28, 2010 at 11:34 am
My third party apps work except my google mobile app is slow. My browser is very slow.
But I agree that the 8330 just isn't powerful enough for this OS. I too will likely revert to 4.5
I want to hear from Boost users how their Curves are working, with this OS preinstalled.
timtones Jan 24, 2010 at 11:42 pm
for some reason after i installed this, and put the precision theme on, i get 4 extra application icons, and they are labeled music, video, pics, etc. when i click them it opens up the respective media programs just like my media folder does. why is this? i dont need the extra shortcut, and it didnt have them on the stock 4.5 themes with this 5.0 os. what gives?
sexdog9 Jan 25, 2010 at 1:43 am
If you have the stock theme on, the media icon is now a folder with those icons in it.

Hey guys. I am trying to get MMS to work on my curve 8330 but it isn't working. It says that sending failed. I know it works on my carrier. I use to have a samsung m510, but since I switched to BB, I never used picture messaging. So I don't know if it's the 5.0 or my service books that are missing. I have the option in my settings menu and everything checks out in the messages menu. There is compose MMS.
Please help me out. Thanks

SpaceMonster Jan 25, 2010 at 7:56 pm

i'm trying to install this on a sprint 8330, and i KEEP getting the: "Net.rim.platform.ecmascript cannot be found" error when i'm trying to install this. i get it on dm and on apploader. i have deleted dm and reinstalled, i have deleted the 5.0 install TWICE and tried reinstalling. i don't know what else i can do, oh and i have deleted the xml file everytime. what am i doing wrong? what else can i try?

I have a Alltel/ VzW 8330 and the upgrade worked great. GPS with BB maps. It also kept all my contacts, my connections, and almost all my 3rd party apps.
I did notice that some of the icons are big. Any words on how to make these smaller?

Has anyone got this boost mobile 5.0 to work on a U.S Cellular 8330. I have tried it wit the app loader, deleting the vendor file and all that comes up on the app loader screen is the app that I already have on the phone minus the core os. Does anyone have any ideas?
Realtalkofny Jan 26, 2010 at 7:05 pm
Hello people , i have no idea how to do this i have a sprint 8330 4.5 at the moment i would like to install the 5.0 but i need help if any one is available to help me let me thanks i have desktop manager on my pc and i downloaded the 5.0 already
masterscat Jan 27, 2010 at 3:03 pm
All you need to do is delete the vendor.xml file under the Program files\common files\research in motion\appLoader.
Another thing I ran into was I tried to do this with Windows 7 64bit. It doesn't work, and will not work within VirtualPC. I ended up doing it with Windows XP 32bit. That should do the trick, I have Sprint also. Goodluck
steve_k_37801 Jan 27, 2010 at 9:01 am
i looked on the BB web site and the latest version is said to be 4.5. I already have 4.5.0175 or some number like that. Is this update throughsome one else?
sylvio13 Jan 28, 2010 at 11:31 am
This is an official OS 5 release that comes with th Boost Mobile 8330 Curve. It seems to be installing fine on other curves as long as you delete the vendor.xml file (See previous posts for instructions).
But you are right that 4.5 is the latest official carrier released OS for most other Curves.

Help! I am not tech savvy
sylvio13 Jan 28, 2010 at 11:24 am
Installed OS 5 last Friday. Deleted the vendor file (though don’t know if I had to, I’m on Sprint w/ an 8330). Went smooth.
Performance seems ok with everything EXCEPT that my browser crawls, especially when loading pages not formatted for mobile phones. I get the hourglass for long periods of time. Also my Google Mobile app is slow. And memory seems low.
Also, the themes that come with this OS are 4.5 like, which is boring.
I would like to know how performance is with this OS preinstalled on the Boost Curve. Are there any Boost users out there that can comment on this?
I am considering reverting back to 4.5, though I will miss the new clock app and a few other features. But I need good performance for my browser.

I've deleted the vendor file and i launch the apploader (c:program files, common files, research in motion, apploader, loader) my test phone connects but I still receive an error message saying it (the 5.0) is not compatiable for my phone. My question is this, what is the proper file (in the shared folder)to use in order to install the update? Funny thing is that i have performed this on another vzw 8330 but I dont remember what I did...please help
melharris0214 Feb 5, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Disconnect your computer from the internet and make sure only the os u want is installed. Plug your bb up and then start the desktop manager. The new desktop managers block u from using different carriers OS's if it is online.
Dilbert Feb 4, 2010 at 8:19 am
Loaded OS with no issues at all on my Verizon 8330 but it was definitely SLOWER, less memory available, no GPS in BB Maps and worse of all, my favorite 3rd party Today theme with docking icons doesn't navigate the same. Today themes with docking icons usually let you scroll up/down to navigate through the messages to calendar and then to the icons, plus if you scroll all the way to the right you can select the profile icon (if your theme has one). Well, with the OS 5.0, it's completely different and very unintuitive. I'm going back to the faster and sleeker 4.5.0.175.

My Hubby is getting the 8350 and I'm thinking it may be easier to have the same phone...especially for BBM purposes.

Thanks for all the great posts and tips. Basically a newbie but I followed from page 1 and updated my Sprint 8330 without a hitch. Now using it for more than just making calls and having some fun.

I just got my Blackberry 8330 sprint phone back from the police station AFTER SEVEN MONTHS WITHOUT IT! I am eager to download the 5.0 for Boost Mobile. First I am downloading the Desktop Manager, because I lost my disk, and then what do I do? Do I delete the vendor.xml file before or after I download the Boost mobile update. And, should I take out the Micro SD card or what. I don't want to lose the pictures on it.

Installed this OS on my MTS 8330 without an issue the other day. Re-loaded all my apps and all went well. A little less memory on my device compaired to OS v4.5, but no big deal and no real big change to the look and feel of the phone. Used BBSAK to wipe phone clean and backup my apps. Used DM to load new OS. Make sure to delete vendor file before loading OS to your device. Happy with the outcome and will stay with this OS and device till MTS launches it's new HSPA+ network in April 2011; then will upgrade!
