If you haven't discovered it yet, Research In Motion is posting updates on the status of BlackBerry service at RIM.com (and on UK.BlackBerry.com). Here's the timeline and where things are at:
Wednesday 12th October - 9:45 (GMT-5)
BlackBerry subscribers in the Americas may be experiencing intermittent service delays this morning. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and we apologize to our customers for any inconvenience. We will provide a further update as soon as more information is available.
Wednesday 12th October - 12:00 (GMT+1)
We know that many of you are still experiencing service problems. The resolution of this service issue is our Number One priority right now and we are working night and day to restore all BlackBerry services to normal levels. We will continue to keep this page updated.
Tuesday 11th October - 21:30 (GMT+1)
The messaging and browsing delays that some of you are still experiencing were caused by a core switch failure within RIM's infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to many of you and we will continue to keep you informed.
Tuesday 11th October - 16:00 (GMT+1)
Some of you are experiencing messaging and browsing delays. We are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.
Monday 10th October - 20:46 (GMT+1)
Our sincere apologies to all of you affected by today's BlackBerry service issues.
Monday 10th October - 15:00 (GMT+1)
We are currently working to resolve an issue impacting some of our BlackBerry customers in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region. In the meantime, we apologise to you for any inconvenience, and thank you for your patience.

Come on guys! We are paying for what???
diegonei Oct 12, 2011 at 11:55 am
We're paying for 99% uptime.
Firewalker96 Oct 12, 2011 at 2:20 pm
99% uptime means that it can be down for 3.65 days.
El Platanero Oct 12, 2011 at 10:58 am
Well most of my phone works so I can wait it out.
daveshiz Oct 12, 2011 at 11:53 am
hope youve not got another 2 days to wait like most of europe !
archpopoy Oct 12, 2011 at 11:58 am
It will be epic if this drags till the 4S release....
archpopoy Oct 12, 2011 at 11:00 am
How often do you think iPhone and Android users have to deal with outages like this?
How about NEVER?
FCK YOU RIM.
theonlyjrod Oct 12, 2011 at 11:24 am
How often do iPhone and Android customers loss their cell service in Quakes, Hurricanes and just plain old windy days...? All the time! Do BlackBerry's loose BIS services, no! When Irene hit, EVERYONE I know lost cell service... Not ME! Thanks to RIM! So shut your face, and just bare with them while they fix the issue!

Was just voicing my opinion, not really asking for yours, thanks.
diegonei Oct 12, 2011 at 11:58 am
Nobody asked for yours either so he might as well voice his. Deal with it.
Fact is, every platform has issues. Complaining about it and being rude on comments will nothelp anyone.

+1. Right on
archpopoy Oct 12, 2011 at 12:07 pm
I didn't know I was being rude. I was simply frustrated with RIM's service like everyone else.
ifarlow Oct 12, 2011 at 1:57 pm
Stop backpedaling. It's too late to try and save your dignity.

kojita Oct 12, 2011 at 11:58 am
Whether you ask for it or not, you ll get it...
lnichols Oct 12, 2011 at 11:40 am
They haven't had anything equivalent to BIS. Give iCloud some time and outages will happen at some point. Google gets more "Cloud" stuff and the same will occur. Fact of life with any service as nothing is every guaranteed to be 100% available. However RIM does apparently need to invest in infrastructure.
So far I haven't lost service so the outage isn't getting everyone.
kojita Oct 12, 2011 at 11:58 am
Outages happen, if you can't live with it, drop it and get a droid or an ithing. Just sayin'
2_BCs Oct 12, 2011 at 12:08 pm
This is just one of the reasons that I am going to Android when I upgrade my phone.

+100
ifarlow Oct 12, 2011 at 1:58 pm
Why, because Google never goes down? Really?
pipotobe Oct 12, 2011 at 11:01 am
I'm guessing the BIS 4.1 update didn't go to well hun???
This is a major problem now. I just can't believe RIM is not on top of this already.
Delays what delays ? nothing related to BIS is not working on my blackberry. This is not a simple delay....
ifarlow Oct 12, 2011 at 1:58 pm
How is RIM not on top of this?
pipotobe Oct 12, 2011 at 10:48 pm
Well I'm not experiencing delays. I'm not receiving anything except for the BBM spam?!?
nomi1978 Oct 12, 2011 at 11:12 am
This is the worst timing, with IP4 launch around the corner and things like that. I think it may have to do with BIS 4.1. But other people seem to believe updates for PlayBook and preparing for DevCon.
RIM needs to get their act together and do better testing before implementation. I understand issues happen. But you can't afford to have a big outage every year.

What pisses me off is this has happened a few times here in Canada this year. I've been a subscriber since 2006 and outages weren't as frequent as this before.

And to think a few years ago there were no cell phones. Now we can't live without them for a day or a minute. No big deal, they'll get it going. In the mean time, adapt and overcome!
mud314 Oct 12, 2011 at 12:22 pm
We are Borg!
You will be assimilated.....
Anyways I agree with you 100% so no BBM, no email, etc etc....so now we get our real work done.
have a good day man. nice to your positive attitude :)
ifraser Oct 12, 2011 at 11:16 am
You don't pay for BBM its an extra service. You pay for your phone contract and texting. BIS is usually the only thing that's added on.
Outages can be forgiven but 3 days is going a bit too far. From someone who works in the business continuity industry they should and could have servers hosted outwith slough that are ready for failures like this. Even if they were abroad somewhere.
kojita Oct 12, 2011 at 12:01 pm
During last outage, I was on BES and it was repaired more quickly...I guess BIS is after BES in terms of networking priority, which makes sense.
2_BCs Oct 12, 2011 at 12:12 pm
Well, that isn't entirely true. You pay for a special Blackberry data package (at least with most carriers) and BBM is sent as data. I agree that you don't pay EXTRA for BBM, but you do pay for it in the long run.
BENZ_O Oct 12, 2011 at 11:16 am
At least they advised everyone of the problem. Not like when PS3 went down and I received an email 2 weeks later.
shebmiller Oct 12, 2011 at 11:16 am
This is annoying. Not only do I have to sort past al the cry babies jumping ship, but now that my employer sent out a mass email about the BB Outage, EBERYONE at work will come and talk to me as I am the #1 BlackBerry fan boy here.
Oh well, time to do my own PR and damage control :D
moyjoy Oct 12, 2011 at 11:17 am
well... at least i can tell the time.
heroldc Oct 12, 2011 at 11:24 am
Please hire me to work your MDFs. I would do a better job!

RIM will weather the storm ... and with DEVCOM next week ... things will be very exciting!! ...
... so stay calm ... don't panic! ....

They make their bed ! and they lay in it
kojita Oct 12, 2011 at 12:02 pm
Hopefully, BIS will be back for devcon...otherwise they might as well quit the industry...
HorseVu Oct 12, 2011 at 12:06 pm
For those who are complaining, there's more to life than looking at your phone every single minute so woosa. Like Alex Baldwin said in Glengarry Glen Ross, "If you don't like it, LEAVE."
Otherwise, like Kevin Spacey said in Glengarry Glen Ross, "GOTO LUNCH!"
123berryaddicted Oct 12, 2011 at 12:22 pm
Will this work on my 8530? Hahaha... Ok... Just pretend you have an iPhone and send txt messages.... Ouch... Txt is lamo compared to bbm... Can't wait to get my bb back :)
chiefbroski Oct 12, 2011 at 12:58 pm
BBM is back for me after being out for a few hours. Work email is working fine too. It's just BIS now.
GeorgeRussos Oct 12, 2011 at 1:01 pm
This is just unacceptable. It really is.
sam81#IM Oct 12, 2011 at 1:01 pm
I can BBM and getting emails. Just can't connect to the net for some reason. Thankfully ATT has media net and its working. Truly odd!!!
m_warden1 Oct 12, 2011 at 1:26 pm
Lifeeeee it has life again... Slow but its there and speeding up. How much I missed you :-p
undone Oct 12, 2011 at 1:40 pm
Its a ploy to get the stock as low as possible so the insiders can buy up as much as possible prior to QNX as well as prior to sales numbers being released.
Sounds better then the lack of detail we are getting about core infrastructure being FUBAR

RIM Update: Service is expected to improve on Friday as many BlackBerry users switch over to iPhone...
Bullet 1 Oct 12, 2011 at 2:19 pm
Did they send out a new reconnection Code of some kind?
endik Oct 12, 2011 at 2:25 pm
I had to switch to cha cha, just to keep in touch with people. So missing blackberry. Can't wait to have service back and put htc cha cha back into draw. Funny is that I was thinking recently what will happen if blackberry servers will go down someday, so now I know. Hope never again...
