Does not work on a Tour 9630 VZW
GPS unsupported on your device...java error

Posted by smccloud Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Probably need a Bluetooth GPS reciever since VZW locks the internal one :(

Posted by onlineaddy Saturday, Jul 25, 2009 931 days ago

My gosh, where have you been?

Posted by smccloud Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

I am looking at this as a way to make sure the speedomter on a car is accurate. Because of that I need a way to force it to display imperial units (MPH & feet) and use an external Bluetooth GPS (i.e. one more accurate than the assisted GPS in my Sprint Curve).

Also doesn't seem to be a way to actually save the data directory you want to use :(

I am getting the same error message on my Storm. GPS unsupported on your device...

Verizon UNLOCKED the GPS in the last firmware update. Where have you been? GPS works like a charm in Google maps now. Pinpoints to within 2 meters!

This app is NOT working right with the GPS on the Storm.

Posted by smccloud Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

I don't have a Storm ;)

I have a Sprint Curve 8330

Posted by milrtime83 Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Then why tell 2 people that VZW locks the GPS?

Posted by aciddevil Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Yep, same error message here on my Storm 9530. Uninstalled

Posted by Sidithicus Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Works on my bold, seems to be sensitive enough for foot/bike use, only wish it could display in MPH instead of KM/H, as it would make it far more useful while biking here in the US

Posted by xanatos1 Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Nope. Not working on my storm either. Verizon strikes again.

Posted by NeoDinian Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

I have 2 issues with this app.

First, the GPS is not working. (Storm, updated to latest firmware, GPS works on other apps, like Google maps, etc...) This app is telling me GPS is not allowed on this device.

I'm wanting a (Free) simple GPS app that will show Coordinates. This one looked promising, but is not working for me. :(

Second, the Icon color is BLACK. So if you have a DARK theme, the icon disappears.

go with BlackStar.

Posted by rs67ss Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Yep. No go on my Tour also. And it's not the internal GPS. Its turned on and not locked out by verizon. I have 6 other apps that all use the GPS info and they work just fine, including Berry Locator, GPS Golf,Trapster, Google maps, Poynt and others. Even have one that I use 50 60 miles from shore to mark fishing areas ...Your guess is as good as mine

It's like it don't even TRY to get a signal... As soon as I tell it to get a signal, it errors out. Getting a signal takes a few seconds normally.

The OTA .Jad file link is not working from my BB Bold. 404 error on browser. Guess I'll have to do PC install... when I get around to it ;~(

installed OTA on my 9630.. java error and crash when i connect to GPS.. and can't "select" a data folder.

Works like a champ on my Sprint 8330. I even found a few park trails from my area online, already mapped out. A couple have the barcode scanner to load onto my curve.

Those of you having trouble with this app might want to try GPS Logger, http://www.emacberry.com/gpslogger.html, another free GPS tracking app previously reviewed on this site, which works great with my Bold on several mountain bike rides in remote areas, and: does not require cell signal, has the ability to display imperial units, and can save and export (by email) files which can be viewed on Google Earth.

Posted by petes99 Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

tried that one yesterday.. doesnt want to do anything for me either :(

I use this and absolutely love it! Works great on my Tour.

I have a Verizon Storm 9530.. keep getting an error that says that my GPS is not supported..

Downloaded this on my 8330. Looking for something like this. Played with it some around the house. I like it but, its metric only. Theres no customization or additional settings. Other then that, its good.

Hi smccloud,

thanks for trying out nogago ! We never used an external GPS instead of the internal, but in theory this should work by
tethering the external GPS via Bluetooth and switching of location based services in the Blackberry options
(depending on the model (we don't have yours), somewhere in the options...

Options/Location Based Services/GPS services switched to off will change your notification icon and turn GPS off,

(2) we will add to the next release somewhen due Mid September, this one will also feature free world-wide maps along with
global elevation data and charting speed and height. We will also enable to measure minutes per km / mile instead of km/h (as this is usual for running)...

(3) The data directory you choose should be saved in the options and be available when you start nogago the next time.
unfortunately we have not found a way to select a directory, so you need to select a file instead and it takes the directory in which the file is stored.

Thanks for your feedback, (2) will be on our release plan.

Best

Raphael

Hello,

I just downloaded the Nogago app for my BlackBerry Curve 8330 and am wondering a couple of things.
1) How do I force it to use an external GPS when it can access my phone's internal GPS?
2) How do I get it to use Imperial units (I.e. MPH & feet)?
3) There does not appear to be a way to actually save the data directory I choose, am I just missing something?

Than you for any help you are able to provide,
smccloud

Thanks all for your fast feedback. We did our best to test on all BlackBerries and (German) carriers to geld hold off, so please bear with us that our first release does not work on all devices.

The next release will provide imperial units as well as some more very nice features (think free maps!). Please let me know if you want to become an alpha tester such that we can improve the device support.

Cheers

Raphael

Btw. it would be nice, if you would fill our download survey such that we can better plan for additional features that we might support in the near future: http://78.46.135.11/limesurvey/index.php?sid=92123&newtest=Y&lang=en (we will not spam you ;-))

Thanks !

After i installed and tried to use it i got the error message everyone else is talking about and then my storm decided it didnt want to work at all. had to quikpull

Posted by PhuFighter Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

.. now, to go outside and actually try it. But given that there are other apps that give similar info, and probably done better (e.g. gpslogger), I am not sure if I will bother keeping this on my Bold.

Is it me or do most of the problems that people have are with the CDMA blackberries?

I can't wait to use this on my hikes and hunting trips.

Guess I'll have to stay with Shape's GSPed.

Posted by stevebtx12 Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

It didn't recognize that my 9530 Storm even had a gps in it.

Could not complete the setup on my Curve 8310. Not compatible?

Posted by jrod.65 Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Doesnt work on the storm. Interface looks primitive....

Posted by loffenauer Friday, Jul 24, 2009 933 days ago

Hi - we tested it on the 9500 here and have no issues (T-Mobile Germany branded phone).

We kept the interface simple so that you concentrate on your outdoor activity and to maximize battery life (with GSM/3G off) we could go trekking for >8 hours without any issue...

Perhaps it's because VZW just recently started opening up access to the device GPS or because I'm using a 9630 and the software is not yet compatible but it appears that the software thinks GPS is not supported on my device. If I attempt to (re-)Connect to GPS I receive an error message: "GPS unsupported on your mobile." followed by a JAVAX error. It doesn't display long enough for me to read the whole thing before it closes the app.

Posted by camarojones Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Between BlackStar and GPSed...this isn't even needed.

Posted by loffenauer Friday, Jul 24, 2009 933 days ago

that is what we want to do with nogago, track logging is just another feature.

Posted by Keepster Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

Just an error message saying that the GPS does not work. Tried reconnecting and it says GPS not supported ?

Uninstall

Works great for me - grabbed it OTA for my Bold and tested it out comparing it with speedo in my veh and GPS simultaneously (I was the passenger) and speed was dead on . Picked up a signal after just a few seconds of launching. Metric is good for me being in Canada.

Posted by mattywin Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 933 days ago

those that get that message on the storm should check and make sure that the GPS in not in 911 only mode. I had the same message with gpslogger and that fixed it instantly. just a thought.

Like every other GPS I have tried I get GPS not available on device

Posted by Xopher Friday, Jul 24, 2009 933 days ago

Looks like this company is in Europe, so they only tested with GSM devices. It sort of makes sense why all the CDMA berries have the same problem.

No go on Curve?

Another APP that does not work with Verizon Blackberry 8330

Posted by loffenauer Tuesday, Jul 28, 2009 928 days ago

We are unfortunately not the only application falling to Verizon policy for 3rdparty apps trying to use GPS, see http://forums.crackberry.com/f61/gps-verizon-8830-update-1279/index90.ht...

Posted by TvTechGuru Sunday, Jul 26, 2009 931 days ago

This app is terrible. It couldn't establish the GPS signal and I couldn't get the "data directory" setup. What gives?

Posted by loffenauer Tuesday, Jul 28, 2009 928 days ago

To set the data directory please select a file in the directory you want to use (see http://groups.google.de/group/nogago/browse_thread/thread/9b6328c9e6704f...).

The GPS signal should arrive within one minute.

Does not work with the storm. It can not get a GPS signal.
