CrackBerry.com - BlackBerry 10 Apps

BlackBerry 10 heralds a new dawn for apps on BlackBerry. Prior to the launch, BlackBerry employees tirelessly worked with the developers, both established and new, to bring the applications to their next generation platform. The result was been nothing short of outstanding. Rich, smooth, and fast 3D games populate the central marketplace, BlackBerry World. Functional apps are also available in a wide variety of categories, including finance, location, news, photography, health, audio, social, and plenty of others.
BlackBerry 10 apps are developed in a wide range of ways. For one, Android applications can be run on BlackBerry thanks to a dedicated runtime. Tech-savvy end-users can even sideload Android applications onto their BlackBerry 10 device. Popular middleware solutions such as Marmalade enables developers to bring their apps into BlackBerry 10 easily, while partnerships with major 3D engines such as Unity enables game developers to bring their creations to the platform. Those more familiar with CSS, JavaScript, and HTML 5 can produce apps through the BlackBerry WebWorks, plus the Cascades user interface tools can make apps very handsome with minimal effort. Of course, developers willing to go all-in with BlackBerry 10 can write apps in C++ within a familiar framework.

First Look: Pebble smartwatch working with BlackBerry 10

While we still have plenty of content to come from BlackBerry Live 2013, we're breaking things down and getting ready to head back home. We've had plenty of great chats and interviews with a slew of developers and BlackBerry fans, and while we certainly didn't get to talk to everyone, we did get lucky that Ritesh swung by the CrackBerry Live stage before we left. Even though we had it mostly dismantled we fired up the camera for one last video.

If you remember waaaay back in 2009 we got the first look at the InPulse Smartwatch and it's BlackBerry integration. The watch has been through a lot since then and most recently was released in a totally new version dubbed the Pebble Smartwatch.

Today, Ritesh showed off some pretty cool BlackBerry 10 action which involves the Pebble smartwatch. While the Pebble isn't working with BB10 off the bat, Ritesh hopes to have a completed app soon that will allow for email, SMS and music playback and more from a BlackBerry 10 device. It's not totally full-featured (for instance it doesn't support any time functions) but it's still pretty awesome as it is.

Check out the video above for more and hit up the comments with your thoughts!

CrackBerry Live: AIO Remote promises ability to control Android devices from BlackBerry 10

Soon you'll be able to do a lot more than just control your PC from your BlackBerry 10 device.

Here at BlackBerry Live 2013 we met up with Hisham Hassan Bakr, an Egyptian developer in charge of a PC control app called AIO Remote. For some time, All In One Remote has been offering the ability to seamlessly control your PC, Linux, or Mac computer over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, complete with native BlackBerry 10 keyboard, presenter slide control, media control, mouse movement, and file system access.

One of my favorite features was the ability to custom program your own virtual buttons which would activate set keystrokes on the computer. Hisham then revealed his intentions to expand functionality to be able to remotely control Android from the app, or to control BlackBerry the other way around. This could be very useful for users that regularly plug their secondary devices into the big screen but still need the ability to access it. As Hisham put it, "this is the first of its kind, to control the world." To be fair, he didn't have anything show on this front just yet, but considering how well the original app works, I'm eager to see Android remote control once it's available.

Personally, I've always stuck to Luko Remote for these kinds of capabilities, but it's great to see someone else having their hand at it, and more importantly, trying to do something different. Find a download link below to this award-winning app, and be sure to check out CrackBerry Live on Thursday for more outstanding interviews and demos.

Tonight at BlackBerry Live 2013, our own Marcus Adolfsson won the BlackBerry Developer Community Award for Best Built for BlackBerry App! Okay, awesome, yes, but really - how many of you guys are surprised? CB10 is the most awesome app on BlackBerry 10 for a reason. It brings all of the latest, hottest BlackBerry news right to your device, operates smoothly using the native look and feel, while also being rich in functionality.

Mad props to Marcus for working his Swedish behind off on the app, and there are still plenty of more features yet to come. If you're curious, you can find out more about the winners over here. We'll be following up on our fellow winners shortly. As a prize, maybe we can get the name changed to CrackBerry at some point...

If, for some silly reason, you don't already have CB10 installed on your device, go get it! If you already have and you love it, leave a gushy five-star review, will ya?

I hooked up with the creator, George Burgess, at BlackBerry Live to go hands on with the app for the first time on BlackBerry 10.

As you will see from the video the app runs like a dream. With it being exam time in the UK, Education Apps could well be the perfect solution for helping you pass your exams without being tied down to a text book or computer.

The app is free to download and then it's just a case of purchasing the content you need - which is all very reasonably priced.

During BlackBerry Live we had Paul Dumais stop by to show off IT Manager. The newly released BlackBerry 10 app is a simple tool for BlackBerry Server admins to easily manage their BES on the go from a BlackBerry 10 device. While the option for admins to use a web interface is always there, IT Manager cleans things up and allows for creating and deleting users, remote wipe of devices, setting IT policies, server status and more.

We got a quick demo of the app from Paul that you can check out in the video above.

We'd heard last week that Endomondo might have some news for us during BlackBerry Live, and though I haven't seen an official announcement, Endomondo is now available for BlackBerry 10 devices in BlackBerry World. Endomondo is ideal for running, cycling, walking and any other distance-based activity. You can head on over and download it from the link below.

At this time, the Endomondo app is an android port, but for those of us that were waiting for it, it's good news regardless. I know a lot of you don't like the ports, but go ahead and give it a download anyhow and let's show those developers that we want their apps! As we've already seen, if companies see the demand for their apps, they will put the time into making a native app for BlackBerry. We just saw that happen with Songza, and I'm sure we'll see it again with other apps.

harmon.ie Office 365 and SharePoint client arrives for BlackBerry 10

If you're looking to access Office 365 and SharePoint on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone, you can now dive into the harmon.ie client. Built as a native app for BlackBerry 10, the harmon.ie app provides full-featured Office 365 and on-premise SharePoint functionality, including secure connectivity and offline document access. Collaboration efforts get updated in real-time and activity streams are built right into the app, so you're able to follow along with coworkers on the go.

We are thrilled to strengthen our partnership with BlackBerry as they continue to enhance their enterprise app offering,” said Yaacov Cohen, CEO of harmon.ie. “Users demand the same productive experience from their applications wherever they are, and on whatever device they are using. With these newest BlackBerry 10 smartphone apps, harmon.ie is targeting the busy information workers who want to actually ‘use’ their device and not just ‘bring’ it to work. Now, these workers can securely and efficiently access, edit and share documents from the cloud and collaborate in real-time in a social environment.

The app is available as a free download and is live in BlackBerry World right now. In addition, if you're attending BlackBerry Live, harmon.ie will be giving hands-on demos. If you're looking for the full details or need more info, we have the full press release posted below.

Web Splitter for BlackBerry 10 is probably one of the strangest apps I have used to date. That's just what Web Splitter does and it comes with a bunch of features and tweaks that can be made.

It seems that the Twitter and LinkedIn updates go hand-in-hand as they have once again been updated today for BlackBerry 10 devices. The new updates ring in at 10.0.3/10.1.3 for each (depending on your OS) and bring along some updated features and various fixes.

It's always good to see updates for big apps like these and we'll take them any day of the week. Both will be populating in BlackBerry World over the next 24 hours, so if you don't see the updates available just yet then check back a bit later.

Toshl brings friendly financial management to BlackBerry 10

Some of you may be familiar with Toshl as they have an app for legacy BlackBerry devices. You may also know that back in August of 2012, development of the Toshl BlackBerry app was discontinued. Though the app was still available and worked fine, no further updates were planned. There were several reasons behind that decision, all reasonable and really not anything we hadn't heard before from several other companies. Fast forward nine months, and to our surprise, Toshl has released a BlackBerry 10 app into BlackBerry World! I was curious what brought about the decision to resume development for BlackBerry and reached out to Toshl CEO Matic Bitenc for some insight.

The easy porting from Android was a large factor since there's a lot less overhead in supporting another platform this way. We've also had quite a lot of feedback from BlackBerry fans around the world wanting the BlackBerry app and even porting themselves once we provided the Android APK. The Slovenian BlackBerry representative was also helpful in providing a testing device so we could do some testing on our own.

For a long time, Endomondo has been a favorite app for BlackBerry users to track duration, distance, speed and calories for just about any outdoor sport they participate in. However, since the release of BlackBerry 10, many of us have been left out in the cold regarding whether or not Endomondo will be supporting our new devices. In fact, it seemed for awhile that even the Endomondo team didn't know if they'd be supporting BlackBerry 10 or not, with conflicting statements from Endomondo Co-Founder Mette Lykke and their Community Manager.

CrackBerry regulars will already be plenty familiar with CB10 - our unabashedly awesome app for cruising the CrackBerry blog, forums, and store.

We recently updated the app with a fresh round of bug fixes and, most notably, the ability to see nested comments (that is, replies to existing comments that show up right below them).

Our previous update optimized everything for the Q10, including a dark theme, keyboard shortcuts, and a bottom bar that hid after a bit.

You can drill down into specific sections using the left-side navigation pane - accessories, apps, editorials, reviews... whatever you're in the mood for.
Give your messaging needs a boost with Hub++ for BlackBerry 10

Back when I was using BlackBerry legacy devices, I was a huge advocate of the app Email++. It allowed me to configure some email accounts with a pop-up so I could essentially read the email or at least get a preview of the message from the pop-up. It made things a lot easier when important emails came through.

The developers of the popular Email++ app are back with the same kind of thing for BlackBerry 10 - Hub++.

Hub++ allows you set up email accounts to include a message pop-up preview so you know whether or not you need to continue to open it or not.

You can customize exactly how much of the message you want to see beforehand. For example, you can choose to see just the first 200 characters or even up to the whole message. You can also set how long you would like the preview to show for too, from 5 seconds to indefinitely, where it will just wait for you to choose an option.

You can create filters too, so if you only wanted to preview emails with a certain word in the subject or from someone or a group of people, you can set that up too. Filters are my favorite feature as I don't want to preview each and every email that comes through. When you have important emails coming through throughout the day, this helps to weed those out and I can get a glance at them without even going into the Hub.

Get your cowboy boots and hats ready for the gunslinging RPG Six Guns

We recently saw the popular western RPG, Six Guns land on BlackBerry 10 and it wouldn't be CrackBerry if we didn't bring you a video demo of the game play. I don't often play RPG games but the free game from Gameloft was too awesome to pass up.

There are many missions to keep you busy, ranging in difficulty and occasionally encounter some supernatural enemies. You collect coins and stars after each completed mission that you can use to buy more gear to equip yourself and your horse. You can even get XP points and healing elixirs.

There are 40 missions to discover, you can roam the wild west to find them. The missions range from stopping robbers, defending sacred lands and forts, and as stated, there will be the occasional supernatural baddies to tend to.

The gameplay is smooth, it's awesome and truly is the bomb duffa. What's more is the game is available to download for free. So there is no excuse no to load this up onto your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone. You can check out the video above for a quick demo.

Here's one for you cooking fans - Chef's Recipe Box for BlackBerry 10

We've seen a few cooking applications arrive for BlackBerry 10 and I recently stumbled upon Chef's Recipe Box which is quite a beauty. The application is a native BlackBerry one, which always pleases me. Not that there is anything wrong with the Android ports - but I just prefer native. The UI of the app is kept pretty plain and simple with black writing on a white background but the features it offers are pretty sweet.

Taking BlackBerry Maps for a test drive

BlackBerry Maps has been available on BlackBerry for years, however it never quite did the trick for most users. While it did work - it wasn't loaded with features worthy enough of making it a "must have" app. Over the years it has evolved and thanks to the new BlackBerry 10 platform it's finally and app we can be proud of. Keep in mind here that I did most of my testing on a BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 both running OS 10.1, so some features may not be available to you if you're still running OS 10.

The new BlackBerry Maps is simply awesome. It works extremely well and, while it doesn't have a ton of features, has just enough to get things done and that's fine by me.

BlackBerry Maps not only gives you great mapping (obviously) but also provides voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation that rivals many stand-alone GPS units.

When you fire up the app it first shows you a map of your current location (providing you have location services enabled). From here you can either search for an address or view your favorites. Favorites consists of addresses you've saved in the app, recent searches and contact addresses that are pulled from your contact list.

When searching for an address, simply start typing and you'll be shown a list of locations that match your search. When you find what you're looking for, tap it and it will be shown as a pin point on the map. You can pan around and zoom to your hearts content here, or tap the arrow to start navigation.

There are a few options within the navigation including route options, night mode and navigation audio. Again, not too many options but still enough to get the job done.

So here's the breakdown: Search for an address, start navigating, get where you're going.

We go hands on with Poynt for BlackBerry 10

Poynt has been a huge app for BlackBerry for many a year. We recently told you that it is now available for BlackBerry 10 (Z10 & Q10) and as a free download it really is one of those 'must have' apps on your device.

The app is currently an Android port but seems to work just fine for me. The only downside I can see is that when you select to view a location on a map it opens up Google Maps in the browser. It would be nicer with a native version so we can jump into BlackBerry Maps and have access to navigation if required.

But as you will see from the above video the app serves it purpose and serves it well.

Full features of Poynt include:

Poynt was always one of my favorite apps on BlackBerry OS and for a while there, I was really beginning to wonder if they'd make the jump over to BlackBerry 10. If you're not familiar with Poynt, then you may not know exactly how valuable of an app it can be at times or the features it offers so here's a run down of its offerings for you.
