Quick Tip: How to enable and disable Universal Search on OS6 and OS7

How to disable Universal Search from the home screen on BlackBerry OS 6 and OS 7

Whether you recently updgraded to a new device, or are a first time user you may find Universal Search to not be for you, and would rather have your application shortcuts back. Universal Search is helpful to some, and a pain to others, but luckily changing from one to the other is quite a simple task, and can be changed in just a matter of seconds.

To take control of this, from your home screen you will want to press menu then go to options. In the options you will notice the first option will be "Launch by Typing" and by default it is set to Universal Search. Simply click the drop down and change it to Application Shortcuts then save your changes -- just like that you are now able to launch your favorite applications via their shortcuts from the keyboard. If you want to switch back to Universal Search, just do the same and reselect the option, no reboot needed to save the changes so you can easily manage this at any given time.

Bell Mobility releases official OS 6.0.0.615 for BlackBerry Bold 9700

Today from Bell Mobility we have OS 6.0.0.615 available for download for the BlackBerry Bold 9700. What's new in this OS? After you install drop a comment or hit the forums with your findings, since no change log was included. Even though this is an official OS, be sure to use caution and do a back-up before installing. And if you're not on Bell Mobility, make sure you delete that vendor.xml file. Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

Virgin Mobile Canada now offering the BlackBerry Pearl 3G for $150 with no contract required

Although the BlackBerry Pearl 3G may not have gained the same consumer love the original BlackBerry Pearl 8100 did in its day, it's still a great device especially if you're looking to get a new BlackBerry without breaking the bank. Right now, Virgin Mobile Canada is offering the BlackBerry Pearl 3G for only $150 and that is with no contract required. Even if Virgin Mobile isn't your carrrier -- you can have the device unlocked for a few dollars and use it on any GSM carrier you wish.

Official OS 6.0.0.600 released by GCI for the BlackBerry Curve 9330 and BlackBerry Style 9670

Some more official carrier OS' have been updated, this time around the BlackBerry Curve 9330 and BlackBerry Style 9670 are getting the love. If you own either devices, you'll likely just want to ahead and load these up rather then waiting for your specific carrier to update. Just remember, make sure you delete the vendor.xml file first and you'll be good to go.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 OS v6.0.0.600 officially released by AT&T

Though we've seen this OS before in leak and official versions for the BlackBerry Torch 9800, we thought we should go ahead and let you guys know that AT&T has officially released it as well. I'm sure there may be a small group of you out there waiting for this from AT&T so if that's you, then here you go! If you installed the leak or the official version from Vodafone DE last month, no need to re-install this, as they are all the same OS. As with any OS, be sure to do a backup of your device before installing.

Considering the last official OS released by Sprint for the Bold 9650 was that of OS 6.0.0.415 you'll no doubt wanna fire up BlackBerry desktop manager and get OS 6.0.0.600 loaded up. Just in case you thought AVEA was done, they weren't. They also went ahead and released the official OS 6.0.0.576 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300. Although all of these OS' were previously leaked, it's pretty awesome that AVEA just unleashed them all at once for everyone who either may not have had a chance to grab them yet or prefers to stick to official OS releases from a carrier. OS 6.0.0.570 is now available for the BlackBerryBold 9780, BlackBerry Torch 9800 and finally, the BlackBerry Pearl 3G (9100/9105). If you're not on AVEA just remember to delete the vendor.xml file before installing and you'll be good to go. Thanks @rr_yy!

BlackBerry 101: Importing picture folders on BlackBerry 6

Whether you are upgrading your current device from a 5.0 OS to a 6.0 version, or you upgraded to a new device completely which is running BlackBerry 6, odds are that when you made the change not all of your picture folders were showing by default. When I made the switch the same happened to me, and I was rather nervous thinking the information was lost, but it wasn't and once the device is plugged into the PC it is all visible. Instead of moving the media into a folder that is showing, getting these additional folders to show is quite simple.

Open your pictures application
Press menu
Scroll to import pictures
Select folders which you want to show
Accept the changes

Pretty simple process, and then all your folders will be showing again. If at any point you want to hide that entire folder you can simply do the same process except this time you will remove the check mark which will remove it from public view. We have previously taken a look at how to hide and show single pictures, but this is an easy way to do it for the whole folder now. Enjoy!

BlackBerry Bold 9700 and 9780 get an official update to OS 6.0.0.546 from Taiwan Mobile!

Taiwan Mobile has released OS 6.0.0.546 for BlackBerry Bold 9700 and 9780 owners bringing them up to par with the BlackBerry Torch 9800, which recieved the same update last week from Vodafone DE. This isn't a huge jump for either as the 9780 was previously sitting at .534 and the 9700 at .526 but an update is an update. Web Browser Shootout: BlackBerry 7 on the Bold 9930 vs. BlackBerry 6 on the Bold 9780!

Following up our BlackBerry Bold Touch Hands-On and NFC Demo videos, we decided it was time to put the newly-announced BlackBerry Bold Touch up against the good ole BlackBerry Bold 9780 to see how things stack up in the web browsing department.

With its 1.2GHz processor and running BlackBerry 7, RIM tells us the browsing experience is approximately 30% faster than the BlackBerry 6 browsing experience on current in-market devices. Part of this is performance is obviously due to the increased processing power, but beyond that RIM says they have done a lot of work on the browser to further enhance it and it's just going to keep getting better. One of the things they have worked hard on is to really minimize the "checkerboarding" or "tiling" that can occur on mobile devices when scrolling down a web page. It definitely appears like RIM has succeeded here. Once a page is fully loaded on the Bold 9930, it's actually really difficult to get any sort of checkerboarding to happen - the scrolling is fast!

During our shootout we definitely saw the 30% improvement to hold true. Check out the video above to see the comparison for yourself. All I know is that as much as I love my Bold 9780, I can't wait to ditch it in favor of the 9900.

It's only been a short while since BlackBerry Pearl 3G owners had some official OS love. Last update being, OS 6.0.0.481 from Telus made some users happy but now, Rogers has gone ahead and released OS 6.0.0.526 for all. You can hit up the Rogers BlackBerry download page to grab the update and of course, if you're not a Rogers user -- just simply delete the vendor.xml file and you are up and running. Only to fair to note, this update works on the 9105 as well. Thanks, rroyy!

While BlackBerry OS 6.0.0.448 for the Bold 9700 has been out in various forms for a little over a month now, T-Mobile is finally officially releasing it to their subscribers. We've had a few reports of people receiving emails from T-Mobile over the past couple of days stating the following:

The new BlackBerry 6 operating system software is now available as a free update for your BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700 smartphone. BlackBerry 6 includes many enhancements including a rich new browser, expanded messaging capabilities, enhanced multimedia and a redesigned interface that's powerful and easy to use. From your computer, go to www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade and follow the on-screen instructions to get the software update.

So if you are a T-Mobile customer that hasn't installed BlackBerry 6 on your device yet, either because you don't like installing leaks or you were waiting for the official from your carrier, head on over and check it out at the link below. Official OS 6.0.0.448 for the Bold 9700, 9780 and Torch 9800 available from Rogers

Just in case some of you all out there missed out on the leaks, missed the update notification -- or simply just forgot, Rogers has updated the Bold 9700, 9780 and Torch 9800 all to OS 6.0.0.448. They are continuing to send out SMS messages to customers so depending on which device you have you may get one sometime soon. If you're wanting to go ahead and download the install falls you can grab them from the Rogers BlackBerry downloads site, or just simply fire up BlackBerry Desktop Manager and install from there. No matter how you decide to do it, best to get it done when you have a chance as the later OS for all those devices are leaps and bounds above the launch OS'.
