Looking back: History shows BlackBerry is no Henry Ford

A few weeks back we ran a poll asking what color options you'd want to see for BlackBerry 10 devices. While a good number of you said you'd want to see many color options, most people simply want black and white. There's a famous quote by Henry Ford - "You can have it in any color, as long as it's black." While RIM has mostly stuck to that with their devices over the years, the Curve line is the one big exception (okay, I'll give you a few Pearls too).

While other models don't stray too far from black, silver or white, the Curves have been all across the spectrum when it comes to color. All the way back to the Curve 8310 and 8320 did RIM provide various color options for consumers -- everything from Sunset Orange to Saphire Blue to Ballet Pink. Personally, I'm a fan of black devices, while (as you all know well) Kevin loves his white. I'd love to see a bunch of great colors for BlackBerry 10, I think that we'll most likely end up with black at launch and maybe white will follow a few months later.

It would be awesome to see some fun BlackBerry 10 devices in blue, orange, silver, white, purple ... you name it, but I think RIM will stick with what works and keep the "black" in BlackBerry. We haven't heard anything that even hints at more color options, so it's a pretty safe bet that we won't see anything crazy at launch.

Keep reading for a look at just how many Curve colors have come and gone over the years. It's quite a big list (and took a while to get it all together) so if we missed anything be sure to leave a comment letting us know so we can fix it up.

BlackBerry Curve 9220 Unboxing Video

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is probably overshadowed by nearly every other BlackBerry smartphone on the market. Its brother the 9320 is the 3G variant but the poor old 9220 gets left with 2G. However, the Curve 9220 may well be one of RIM's best selling smartphones. The device was initially launched in India back in April and just a week or so after it was released to the Indonesian market. Both of these launches were hugely popular and there weren't enough phones to meet demand if my memory serves me right. A few other countries have now been added to the list where you can pick up a BlackBerry Curve 9220 and I am sure that the roll out will continue for some time.

This just goes to show that there is a market for a 2G BlackBerry. We won't see the 9220 for sale here in the UK or in North America but in certain markets they are selling like hot cakes.

This new ‘king' budget BlackBerry smartphone is a huge leap forward in terms of progression from its predecessor, the 8520. The BlackBerry Curve 9220 runs BlackBerry 7.1, the latest version of RIM's operating system, so gone are the days of the Curve freezing and lagging. With 512 ROM and 512 RAM under the hood things really are so much smoother. Combined with a nice big battery (1450 mAh), FM radio and a dedicated BBM key the 9220 is looking good.

We will have a full review of the BlackBerry Curve 9220 coming soon so if you think this may well be your next smartphone keep your eyes peeled.

Nicki Minaj performing exclusive concert for BlackBerry subscribers in Manila

Buy a new BlackBerry Curve, get free tickets to see Nicki Minaj perform in an exclusive concert? Sounds like a great deal to me. That's exactly what new Globe subscribers in the Philippines can look forward to when they purchase a new Curve 9220 or Curve 9320. If you're a current Globe subscriber in or out of a contract there are options for you as well.

This will be Nicki Minaj's only stop in Southeast Asia on her Pink Friday Tour, with the concert taking place on July 11, 2012. “Globe is very excited to partner with BlackBerry in bringing Nicki Minaj up close and personal to her Filipino fans this July. Flying an international artist for an exclusive concert in the country as the only Southeast Asian destination is something we’ve never done before. As part of our continuing efforts to further grow our postpaid business, we are making Nicki Minaj’s concert party as our biggest freebie ever, making it exclusive to subscribers getting the new BlackBerry Curve 9220 or BlackBerry Curve 9320. With these two new BlackBerry smartphones, users can join the conversation and share a great concert party experience with each other, only from Globe and BlackBerry,” said Martha Sazon, Head of Globe Postpaid.

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 comes free with My Super Plan 499 plus a P99 unlimited BlackBerry Chat subscription while the BlackBerry Curve 9320 is free with My Super Plan BlackBerry Unli Surf Combo Plan 999. For as low as P598/month, Globe subscribers can get the BlackBerry Curve 9220 complete with a P499 monthly consumable amount for calls and texts, unlimited access to BBM and 2 freebies, in addition to the one free concert ticket. On the other hand, subscribers can enjoy the BlackBerry Curve 9320 for only P999/month with unlimited surfing, P400 monthly consumable for calls and texts, and 1 freebie, in addition to the two free concert tickets.

Malaysia and Thailand introduce the BlackBerry Curve 9320 and Curve 9220

The new Curve models are certainly making their way around the way quite fast. Being the last BlackBerry 7 devices before BlackBerry 10 launches, RIM wants to get these out to as many places they can. Next stop on the Curve train ride are Malaysia and Thailand. Both the BlackBerry Curve 9320 and Curve 9220 will be available in both countries.

It is pretty clear who these Curve devices are aimed and we have had many discussions on this here on the blogs. They ship with BlackBerry OS 7.1 installed and both come with an FM Radio. The Curve 9320 has a few more specs on it than the Curve 9220 but both include the dedicated BBM key.

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is already available to buy in Thailand through authorised partners and distributors. The BlackBerry Curve 9320 has no release date yet but this will be probably be around mid-June.

In Malaysia, the Curve 9220 is scheduled for release on June 4th 2012 and Malaysia carrier Tune Talk will open pre-orders for it on May 25th 2012. Again, no information on the release date for the Curve 9320.

We got a great look at the round of Curve series devices for emerging markets not too long ago but the devices have no once again popped up confirming their existence. The BlackBerry Curve 9220, BlackBerry Curve 9320 also known as the "Jazz" series of device have no recieved UAProf documents on RIM's servers meaning they are one step closer to release. The BlackBerry Curve 9320 will be an HSPA device while the Curve 9220 will be EDGE but something is missing here, there is three devices that make up the "Jazz" series - Davis, Armstrong and Wynton - there seemingly appears to be one missing unless RIM is just playing around with names.

Since we first posted our 2012 BBX BlackBerry Preview some new info has come to light that changes things up a bit. For the most part we knew what was coming device-wise but our timeline was a bit off. Now some other devices have come into play and some dates have been shuffled around a bit. We can expect to see some new BlackBerry 7 devices in the Curve line, a new updated BlackBerry PlayBook as well as at least one BlackBerry 10 (oh yeah, RIM changed the name of BBX to BlackBerry 10 too) phone hit before the end of 2012. Keep reading and we'll take a look at what to expect in the coming months.
