Three UK release BlackBerry 7.1 for the BlackBerry 9900, 9360 and 9810

Yesterday we saw O2 UK become the first UK network to update their BlackBerry 7 devices to 7.1. Today, Three UK has followed suit and announced via their Twitter account that they have released the update for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Curve 9360 and the Torch 9810.

Taking a look at the Three UK BlackBerry downloads page, it seems that the Torch 9810 is for 7.1.0.342, the Curve 9360 is for 7.1.0.336, while the Bold 9900 doesn't look to be showing a 7.1 update yet. So keep checking back as I'm sure it will be there soon.

If you prefer to install official updates then head on to the Three UK download pages and get installing now. Don't forget to backup before you do, even if it is an official update.

If you're on Bell and own either a BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9810, you'll want to go ahead and grab your USB cables if you've been waiting for BlackBerry 7.1 to drop. Bell has now posted OS 7.1.0.267 to their BlackBerry download page, though previously leaked and not as far ahead as T-Mobile's version -- it's still nice to see they got around to releasing it.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 OS 7.1 updates now available

After a few false starts, T-Mobile has now gone ahead and announced the official availability of BlackBerry 7.1 for both the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9810. With them officially supporting it now, they're making use of some of the great features built into BlackBerry 7.1:

The new BlackBerry OS 7.1 has the following features.

Wi-Fi Calling: Allows you to make calls over a Wi-Fi network. Does not support handoffs to cell network, so calls will drop when you leave the Wi-Fi coverage.
Mobile HotSpot/USB tethering: Allows you to connect up to five devices to the internet through your BlackBerry device.
Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS): A personalized emergency alert system designed to alert people of nearby threats or emergencies.
BBM Music: A new feature that lets you download 50 tracks when you sign up and up to 25 tracks per month.
Bing search: Device searches also uses Bing to provide additional search results.
BlackBerry Device Analyzer: Lets you perform diagnostic tests to check for errors or issues, which can help you resolve device problems without having to call Customer Care. Check out the What is the BlackBerry Device Analyzer to learn more.

It’s safe to say that the more moving parts there are on a BlackBerry smartphone, the greater the chance you have of dropping it. Think about it; say you’re running to a meeting-You have your bag or coffee in one hand, and your BlackBerry in another. Suddenly, you get an urgent email from your boss. I am not a big fan of cables – I try to avoid them when I can. I have a wireless mouse and keyboard, I have a Bluetooth speaker phone in my car and I have a stereo Bluetooth headset for when I’m taking the heel-toe express. The one cable that seems to keep me tied down is my BlackBerry charger. I know, it seems petty, but it’s not so much when I’m half asleep, in the dark, fumbling with the charger and charging port. Anyone with extremely active kids knows that the less time you take to plug in your phone, the less time they have to do things they’re not supposed to do (like playing hockey IN the house).

That’s why I like a wireless charging system from the good folks at Powermat. No wires, just power and convenience. While not available for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, it is available for other BlackBerry smartphones, including the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and 9810. For simple charging in a not so simple lifestyle, Powermat is a must have.

If the commercial above looks a bit familiar, it's most likely because it's essentially the same ad used for the BlackBerry Torch 9810 last year. It seems that RIM just recut the spot to show off the BlackBerry Bold 9900 this time around. It does make it hard to believe that our buddy Diplo is using a Bold 9900 now and you would think they'd just shoot another ad to change things up. Tisk tisk RIM for being lazy :-)

If you've been thinking about grabbing a BlackBerry Torch 9810 or Torch 9860 from AT&T, you may want to think a bit harder next week. AT&T is offering up both devices for just a penny as part of their holiday promotion. You'll have to sign a new 2-year contract as an upgrade or new line to be eligible for the promo price, but you'll save a bundle on the device itself if you do so. The Torch 9860 will be available for $0.01 on Sunday November 27th and the Torch 9810 on Monday November 28th. Sadly no love for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 as it will still run you full price. T-Mobile holding a Magenta Saturday sale November 19th

If Black Friday sales aren't your thing, T-Mobile is giving you the option of doing some shopping a bit early with their Magenta Saturday sale. This one day only sale is being held November 19th in-store only and you can get some decent deals on a BlackBerry with a new service agreement. Some of these deals include a Bold 9900 for $49.99 down payment after $150 mail-in-rebate, Torch 9810 for $49.99 down payment after $100 mail-in-rebate, and the Curve 9360 with no down payment after $50 mail-in-rebate.

Confused by the term "down payment"? Well, it appears T-Mobile has switched up the way they sell devices, and instead of subsidizing the cost and giving customers free or reduced cost phones, they do a down payment and monthly payment after that for the term of the contract.

The phones listed above actually work out like this:

BlackBerry Bold 9900: $199.99 down & $20/mo., total: $599.99; $150 MIR avail.
BlackBerry Torch 9810: $149.99 down & $20/mo., total: $549.99; $100 MIR avail.
BlackBerry Curve 9360: $49.99 down & $15/mo., total: $349.99; $50 MIR avail.

So, if you're planning on getting a smartphone from T-Mobile, you end up paying more money by taking their monthly plan, vs just paying full cost for the device up front. If you don't have $600 to shell out for a new BlackBerry though, and plan to do the monthly payments, you might as well take advantage of the sale, and get the down payment money back via the mail-in-rebate.

I'm a big believer that RIM and carriers can always do way more when it comes to advertising. I feel they never really show off the truly great features of BlackBerry phones and that is something on which they are missing the mark. The latest commercial from AT&T shows off not the newly released Bold 9900, but our good friend the Torch 9810. The ad runs through a few of the device features and capabilities with an amusing tone (and of course draws consumers in by stating it's "4G). Tank Recon 3D first popped up over a year ago for the BlackBerry Storm2 and after a long overdue update is now available for the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, Torch 9810 and Torch 9850/9860. This first person tank shooter features real-time 3D graphics that make it one of the most fun games on the platform.

Piloting your new advanced tank, code named Alpha, you will be shooting it out with various units such as tanks, planes, AT guns and more. Fire your main cannon and watch as the enemy explodes into pieces. Use your guided missiles to bring down enemy planes or anything else that needs blowing up!

Tank Recon 3D allows you to choose between Mission and Survival mode. Jump right into the action with Survival mode and see how long you can survive. The longer you last the harder the enemy units become. When you're done, submit your high score to the Internet for bragging rights.

T-Mobile announces the BlackBerry Torch 9810 - Available November 9th

We knew it was coming one of these days and it looks like November 9th it is. T-Mobile today annouced that the BlackBerry Torch 9810 is expected to be available in stores in just a weeks time. Business customers will be able to pre-order the latest Torch as of today, but regular Joe's will have to hang out until next week when the device will be made available in stores and online. The Torch 9810 will run you $249.99 with 2-year activation after a $50 mail-in rebate. Keep reading for the full press release.
