And people have the audacity to say this can't/won't compete with the Iphone.... Yeah right...
JRSCCivic98 Oct 2, 2008 at 11:23 pm
GPS is open on the iPhone, you think Verizon will man up enough to leave it open on the Storm? Hummm, we'll see...
JRSCCivic98 Oct 2, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Actually, let me rephrase that. Will RIM man up enough to NOT let Verizon cripple their handset?
Anonymous Oct 3, 2008 at 7:52 am
Well If you have been paying attention to the leaks...you would already know that the Storm has GPS on its own and VZ Navigator as well. Verizon is opening up its network in December(appearently) to any phone that has Verizon capable specs but not locked down. So you're going to see them stop crippling their phones here soon. Verizon is really turning things around with their no contract...etc. I applaud them.
JRSCCivic98 Oct 3, 2008 at 8:05 am
No offense, but I'll believe it when I see it. This and higher price are the two biggest gripes for VZW you'll see from people.
ilikephonesthatwork Oct 3, 2008 at 11:00 am
ummm if you will look at ATT and VZW prices they are identical! This price thing gets OLD... Check the facts before posting... Face it we should ALL be happy, we have two great phones to choose from: Storm and Iphone.
JRSCCivic98 Oct 3, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Who said I was comparing prices from Verizon with AT&T? I think you made what's called an assumption here, which obviously isn't correct. Point is, price is a bit high and with the introduction of the open network plans, the prices on that are expected to be higher due to the "open" policy.
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I can't wait!
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 4:21 pm
The question begs to be asked - what song is that?
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 4:25 pm
I just opened Shazam on my iPhone and hit Tag and spit back that the song playing in the video is by Sam Sparro, the song is called Black And Gold, and the label is Modus Vivendi Music.
And if I want to, I can click and buy the song right now from iTunes.
Will the Storm be able to do that?
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I'm sure... Then I can copy and paste the info into a MMS and send it to all my other Blackberry loving friends, who can open it instantaneously.

Brent K Oct 2, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Verizon does the same thing...so yeah it will be able to. Not sure about Vodaphone.
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Who cares? In fairness I am sure some people do. The only real concerns I have are how well does it handle typing (a blackberry that is hard to type on is as useless as a "boar pig with titties", and is the internet browsing any better/faster than my 8330? My 8830 handles e-mail and sms plenty good enough, better than my Mac or PC.
As far as the i-phone it's VERY cool, but as long as it's ATT only, the i-phone will remain a toy. I really do like my cellphone to get calls and hold them, in my neck of the woods ATT and Sprint are not reliable and don't even get me started on the pipsqeeks like t-mobile.
tech42er Oct 3, 2008 at 11:22 am
I'm not sure about the typing, you'll have to ask crucial. but the browser will be the same kind the iphone has and the speed will be much higher (because it uses EVDO Rev A instead of EVDO Rev 0, like the Curve). That said, if you like qwerty keyboards, definitely stick with the Curve. It's a great BB!
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 4:56 pm
If Shazam decides to create a third party app for the Storm (which I'm sure they will - just like they did for the iPhone), then yes, it will. I'd also like to see you download that song when not in range of wi-fi.
Rob B Oct 2, 2008 at 4:56 pm
The majority of the phones on Verizon can do that with VCast Song ID... that's nothing remarkable... In fact, it's pretty ordinary with today's phones...
/Epic fail
strhessed Oct 2, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Well iDork, since the Storm will be V-Cast enabled which also contains Song ID, I don't think we will have any problems. And I'm pretty sure that V-Cast Song ID was around before the iJoke even came out, so put that in your iPipe and smoke it !!!
(Disclaimer - I realize that the iPhone is a good device, I just love to talk smack and get everyone all wound up ;)
Anonymous Oct 3, 2008 at 12:22 am
I am as in love with this phone as anyone and think the iPhone can kiss my ***...but, I do think it's funny that this song was a free download on iTunes a couple of weeks ago. iPhone killer debuted with an iTunes free download. Yeah, that's funny.
ilikephonesthatwork Oct 3, 2008 at 11:02 am
Will the iphone send that video with an MMS? Step out of the crystal house...
AlsoAnonymous Nov 14, 2008 at 2:44 am
Probably, since Verizon has had a song identifier application available for well over a year. And it also allows you to download the full song, ringtone, or ringback tone if you choose.

Is the guy getting ready to do a hands on demo of the phone? At the very end it looks as if he is holding up one of the Storms in his hand.
I wonder if the rest of this video might pop up later :/

Achronas Oct 2, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Okay people, this phone is everything anyone ever dreamed of from a touch screen blackberry (at least from what we can see and know about it so far).
So, with this said, why do you guys still want to compare it to the Damn iPhone.
You are an absolute jackoff if you say the iPhone isn't a sweet ass phone, but I have to say I think this phone is going to be the next best thing, just like the iPhone was when it came out... and I hope that it is going to be in my hands soon also.... cause I just can't wait any longer!!!
Valace2 Oct 2, 2008 at 5:11 pm
My local corporate VZW store manager said Thanksgiving. Would jive with the Black Friday craze. She also mentioned that things get "leaked" and to check online. I think she was misleading. BGR mentioned a press conference for the Storm on the 9th of October. I am betting on Oct 23 or 24. Storms are unpredictable.
Oct 3, 2008 at 1:40 am
Releasing a cell phone on Black Friday actually doesn't sound like a smart move With all the other advertising and rush to buy presents a cell phone would get lost in the mix. Not many people will want to wait in line at a cell store when they also want to be at numerous other stores getting the deals of the day. Verizon isn't going to be discounting this any differently on Black Friday or during the holiday than they plan on doing the rest of the year.
A better move would be to launch a couple weeks before Black Friday. They are early enough to take advantage of the full holiday buying season while not having to compete with Black Friday deals & advertising for the launch.
Any reason you are guessing October 24th other than Storms being unpredictable?
Valace2 Oct 3, 2008 at 11:34 am
Just a hunch based mainly around the name and the rumored press conference on Oct 9. Why have a joint RIM/VZW/Vodafone shindig in NYC of all places just to say here it is, we don't don't know when you can have it, but here it is. They have put alot more meaning into the naming of this device. It's not a Curve or a Pearl or even a Bold, it is a Storm. Storms take people by suprise, storms are powerful. Every video and picture I have seen has led me to believe that this thing is ready, it's just a timing issue now. How long had they been working on it before what was it August when everyone started talking about it? Another thing is the carrier, VZW does things a little differently which is why I think you will see tv time for this thing before it's released. How cool would an army of Verizon zombies look in the middle of a storm, and the VZW pitch man whips the thing out. The Storm is a blackberry first and foremost but it will be a multimedia machine and I think the demand, if it is in fact ready and everything I have been led to believe is true will be a monster seller.
Valace2 Oct 3, 2008 at 11:42 am
I think Black Friday would unfortunatly be ideal for the release of a phone the caliber of the Storm. Have you ever seen a VZW store open at 4 or 5 in the morning on Black Friday? Also I think that while they might not discount the Storm that day, they could discount alot of their other devices, thinking that the masses. who turn out to buy the Storm might bring along a friend or two who might be interested in getting a new phone, or phone accessories. The Black Friday craze is getting bigger and bigger and the types of items that get discounted is increasing. I bought a 42" flat screen last year for 550.00 that is still regular price today for 700.00.

Does anyone have any hints on how I can get out of my ATT contract? I've been with them since 2004 and have a full year before my current contract is up.
I've been a happy Curve 8310 owner. It's time for a change and ATT isn't cutting it. Verizon here I come.
I'd appreciate any feedback.

But like some of us who have been holding out for the Storm for quite awhile now I feel that "Our Day" is just over the horizon. I have already sent the URL for CrackBerry to many of my "other device" carrying friends!!!

So wait ... does this have streaming video? I was told BlackBerries didn't have streaming video capabilities. That's the one thing I don't like about my Curve.
mike1981x Oct 2, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Hmm, both my Curve & Pearl (Verizon) can do streaming video on YouTube and Vcast (m.vcast.com). Possibly more sites, but I never bother trying. I think you need v4.3 or later though, because my dad's AT&T Curve has v4.2 and he cannot watch YouTube.

During the segment where a phone call is answered, it shows the user actually switch menus and send what looked to be a text message or email or something during mid-call and then return to the conversation..awesome! So like, if you've got someone calling you for a file you forgot to send you can tell them to hold a sec and send it immediately! Is this a standard blackberry feature or is this new to the Storm?
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 8:17 pm
This is a standard BB feture. I don't know about sending an e-mail or txting while on the phone, but you can definately check your e-mail, contacts, calendar, and etc. while talking to someone. You don't even have to put them on hold.
someone Oct 3, 2008 at 9:05 am
Not on Verizon it isn't. Data "stops" while in a call.
JBDizz Oct 2, 2008 at 7:13 pm
It also looks like you can snap a picture and then "print or send". Is it referring to actually plugging into your print via USB, or is it referring to some different method?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but I think it is because of the functionality with Rev a - data and voice at the same time
Anonymous Oct 2, 2008 at 8:24 pm
I believe you can only do that with Vodafone's network. I do not think Verizon's network will support data and voice simultaneously.
Xopher Oct 2, 2008 at 8:36 pm
EV-DO can handle voice and data at the same time.
If you are in an area where you only get 1X, then you can still switch to other applications while in the phone call, but it won't transmit data until the call ends.

I'm going to have to go with an iPhone if not (everyone at work is getting an iphone for this)
RIMmy Oct 2, 2008 at 11:38 pm
The device will support Exchange, but it will have the standard mandatory $30.00 (or $45) data pack. I believe that's the same pricing as the iFone, so it should be a moot point. There would be no additioonal fee beyond the regular BlackBerry data fee.

A touch device video without anyone touching it?! This baby will live or die based on the usability of its touch-based interface and the buttery smoothness of the UI elements (scrolling, etc.)
To have a video that long, with no actual device interactions, is either a straight-out tease, or worrisome moving forward.
Sigh. Guess I'm still waiting on Kevin's hands-on!

looks like rim needs better ad agency and creative representation. millions of people got conned into buying an iphone as a result of savvy pr.
at least if storm purchasers are conned into their purchase by savvy marketing they will hopefully be rewarded with a well thought out and superior product.

I saw the video and I contacted Verizon regarding the possible release date for this phone. The customer service rep stated that it could be released in November and that the early price point was $299 with a two year contract extension. Good news for crackberry fans!
Oct 3, 2008 at 1:44 am
Boy genius is reporting a November 9th launch for vodafone, if I'm not mistaken that a Sunday?....Highly doubt this phone would be released on a Sunday??? Also, the US version is rumored to be released Nov 1st or 2nd which is also a Sat and Sun?? So who knows...........

TheJust Oct 3, 2008 at 5:25 am
Am I correct that it's saying you can use it as a 3G modem for your laptop? I hadn't heard that before, and that'd be a big plus for me. At least if Verizon 3G is as good as I've heard.
Anonymous Oct 3, 2008 at 11:40 am
You can indeed use it as a modem for your laptop. I'm currently doing that with the VX8700 I'm using until the Storm comes out. One cool aspect is that, because my laptop has built-in bluetooth, I don't even have to "connect" anything. Just install VZW access manager and as long as I'm signal range (very easy with Verizon), and my phone is within bluetooth range, I can wirelessly connect to the internet at reasonable speeds.
amofiav Oct 3, 2008 at 6:52 am
Let me answer a few things real quickly.
I'm not sure who you talked to about the price of the phone but they are wrong. There is NO pricing for the phone yet. When you put the product code into an order it is still coming up as "on hold". Other than that there is no E-Guide that a normal rep can get to. I even tried a little URL hacking to see if that would get me somewhere.
Voice and Data at the same time. If you are in an EVDO area when you place a call the you're phone will drop the EV and be strictly 1X. You will be able to send sms while on a call but absolutely nothing else. But you can already send a sms while on a call in a 1X area. The only way you would be able to email/web/mms while on a call is if it is supported by EVDO Rev-A.

OK, I'm fed up with hearing about people complain about phones being similar to the iPhone. Tired of it!
When Ford made the Model T, that was THE shit, no one else bothered making another car, if that remained constant, we'd all be driving Fords!
I enjoy driving my Benz. I love the competition, and I can't be thankful enough that this BB is on Verizon, only! Because, unlike iPhone users, our BB's will actually hold calls, connect, and stay connected to the network! Totally shocking, I know!

Cover Flow Oct 3, 2008 at 11:22 am
The feature that allows you to flick through pictures or album art is called Cover Flow. I think that if the LG Dare can do it. The BB will do it as well and with style.
I cant wait for this phone to come out. I got so amped when I saw this video. I went and downloaded that Sam Sparro's whole album.

Looks Nifty. I'm (almost) disappointed I bought a Curve from Verizon last week - as a First-time BlackBerry owner, I'm very much liking my little 8330, but this Storm...Wow.
I will be holding off on rushing out and getting one, until some reviews are in and I can have a little "hands-on" time with one in the store, of course. I'm probably concerned like a lot of you, about JUST how good a job RIM has done with that touchscreen... is it tactile enough & easy to input & retrieve data on? I mean, the reason why I bought a BlackBerry was because I can fly around on the thing, eMail and surf, and all manner of other stuff.
I'm sure RIM knows its predominate user-base is going to want to keep that same "designed for productivity"-feel to the device, while throwing in a few new twists & frills to the BlackBerrys abilitys.
I'm excited about it - but cautious at same. Not having a keypad could be great, different or disaster, depending on how well RIM has designed this thing.
Totally wanting to get my hands on one!
Anonymous Oct 3, 2008 at 2:24 pm
If you want the storm, you can always return the curve and wait for the storm. Or maybe it will be out within 30 days of your purchase and you can just swap. The caveat is that if you purchased in the store, there is a small fee (I think $20ish...sort of a re-stocking fee). In reality, I'm sure the fee is to discourage people from swapping phones every 29 days. They tell me no activation fee, but I think that is only if you purchase online. If you purchase online, then you don't pay any fees, but you'll have to cover shipping (and be without a phone while you wait I suspect).
