* Update: Oct. 7, 2009 - BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 has been officially released. DOWNLOAD HERE. Check out our full BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 Guide for full walk-through. *
We have all gotten a good look at the new BlackBerry messenger on numerous occasions. Now, you can download an unofficial release (leaked version!) to your device and check it out hands on for yourself. All versions have been posted at BlackBerryOS right down to a compatible version for 83xx devices. The Storm, Tour, Bold and 8900 are all there. Be sure to check it out and remember, these are leaked and NOT official - if you lose all your BBM contacts we cannot be held responsible so back up your data before you try these! Only play around with this if you're comfortable in doing so.
To install via standard method, download the zip to your pc and extract. From there you open Desktop Manager, then Application Loader, browse to the folder containing the file and continue on. If that doesn't work, you can try copying the files to where your OS is installed and overwrite the existing ones. Then run and load Desktop Manager it should now show as 5.0 BBM.

I am trying it for my 8900.. it says 'application is not compatible with my device and cannot be loaded'
i am on .250, anyone else have this problem?
dwain77 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:05 pm
I'm getting the same issue here...don't have time to try and fix it now though. Guess I'll mess around more when I get home in a bit.
I have an 8900 with .231.
princesuperstar1226 Jul 17, 2009 at 5:46 pm
i'm having the same issue :s ... i'm on .250 also ...
soundium Jul 17, 2009 at 5:51 pm
In this case you have to use javaloader.
Just replace old .cod files with new.
princesuperstar1226 Jul 17, 2009 at 7:23 pm
how do I do this?
the only cod files on my computer were the ones in the BBM 5.0 folder ...
soundium Jul 18, 2009 at 4:53 am
1. Create folder for BBM2
2. Copy files:
net_rim_bb_qm_peer.cod
net_rim_bb_qm_peer_resource_en.cod
javaloader.exe
3. Start CMD and go in created folder for BBM2
4. Plug-in your BB
5. Type:
javaloader -u erase -f net_rim_bb_qm_peer_resource_en.cod
once done type next one:
javaloader -u erase -f net_rim_bb_qm_peer.cod
Now device will reboot. After reboot type:
javaloader -u load net_rim_bb_qm_peer_resource_en.cod
once done type next one:
javaloader -u load net_rim_bb_qm_peer.cod
done. good luck.

KILLER!
Dave12308 Jul 17, 2009 at 3:19 pm
VZW's latest device to get absolutely no love at all..... Does the Curve 8900 4.6.1 version work at least, since it runs the same OS? And why the total lack of Pearl Flip love on CB? I don't think i've heard mention of the device since it launched.
Kevin Michaluk Jul 17, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I'll make sure it gets some love. Not intentional - that's for sure.
Dave12308 Jul 17, 2009 at 3:26 pm
It does kind of show that the Flip has VERY few issues out the door on the official OS (If I find an issue, i'll be sure to let everyone know *LOL*)
The only problem is, it works so well leaks are unnecessary.... And the 4.6.1.236 for Bluegrass Cellular doesn't load on the VZW Flip for whatever reason.
Jared DiPane Jul 17, 2009 at 3:32 pm
YES PLEASE on the 8230 love, that would be amazing Kev!!! :)
MUSHU Jul 17, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Does not work, copy the files to where your OS is installed...over write the existing ones...THEN run and load desktop manager it should now show as 5.0 BBM.

Alienware_51 Jul 17, 2009 at 3:40 pm
well I have it now, it's just that BB desktop manager doesn't think it is a new update. Do I have to update to desktop manager 5.0 or something?
jsanta11 Jul 17, 2009 at 3:41 pm
WOW..Major improvement .
Devilsmed98 Jul 17, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Where is the love for us with the 8350i?!?
nodron Jul 17, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Working nicely on my Storm 9500. Some great added features on it, now I just need contacts LOL
Alienware_51 Jul 17, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Is this correct? I have it downloaded. I extracted the files (mine it for a Bold) so do I have to place the folder called "BBM_4.6.0" somewhere special? My desktop manager sees nothing new to update to.
cacorrales Jul 17, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Het did it work?? I couldn´t downloaded it! It says it not there anymore!!!! Could you send it to me via email??
thethrillofit Jul 17, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Working perfectly on my 8310. LOVE IT!

Anyone else get this. Only came into one of my accounts, despite the fact I've got five on the BIS. Never seen one like it before!
av8ryxx Jul 17, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Got the same email. Wondered if it was spam from Megaupload or part of the copy we are all "evaluating"
Jabb Jul 17, 2009 at 3:53 pm
No love for the pearl 8110? :(

applejosh Jul 17, 2009 at 4:00 pm
I tried adding the .alx file in the "remembered" folder, and DM (4.6) reports nothing new to install. Bummer. (Bold on OS 4.6.0.266 soon to be 4.6.0.247.)
nodeuces Jul 17, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Doesn't seem to work on Verizon 8330. Just constantly reboots.
Serpent1189 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Have any brave souls tried it on 82xx since it and bold are the same OS?
Dave12308 Jul 17, 2009 at 11:28 pm
however, the 82xx part is technically incorrect, since the 8230 runs 4.6.1; same as the Curve 8900
xplode Jul 17, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Just a heads up for all you Bold 9000 users, it so far has not worked loading it the traditional method when you browse and find the ALX file. it will display and error of "no additional applications designed for your device were found"
Alienware_51 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:02 pm
that's exactly what happened to me! no one seems to care.
blacksocialitexx Jul 17, 2009 at 4:17 pm
me too
Knockz Jul 17, 2009 at 4:13 pm
The install worked fine on my bold through DM5.0. Just simply browsed for the install and it installed it. Now running nicely. Running OS 4.6.0.282.

alyssaspiering Jul 17, 2009 at 6:18 pm
I have the VZW 8330 but it says "No additional application was found for your device" or something like that. What am I doing wrong?!
bigjman Jul 17, 2009 at 4:04 pm
No love for any of the pearl models? Not a good look!
fdrive Jul 17, 2009 at 4:04 pm
It amazes me that BB is suppose to be one of the most secure phone/data devises on the market yet they can't keep their software/OS development files secure from leaks... *shaking head*
Alienware_51 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Anyone with a Bold get the download to work? I'm running 4.6.0.282 and NO luck with the traditional method.
JaeKar99#CB Jul 17, 2009 at 4:06 pm
This is nice. Easier to read and follow conversations. Love the interface. This is HOT!
mrplep Jul 17, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Does the •Download for Curve 83xx, OS 4.5 work on the 8130? Since the os is 4.5 and all.
ahyougotme Jul 17, 2009 at 4:08 pm
this looks so much nicer! finally RIM figured out that the messenger isn't "all business" and actually made it look like something ppl will want to use. I'm so happy
Arsonist Jul 17, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Installed and running on my Storm (.151)
pntless Jul 17, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Installed on my tour as a regular app, DM saw it as an update and went with it. New version is excellent. TY.
xlikewolvesx Jul 17, 2009 at 4:11 pm
There's a chance I'm doing this wrong, but I can't get it to work on my 8320.
Caminyx Jul 17, 2009 at 4:11 pm
It's not the newer one with threaded sms support :(

I may get it to work on my Bold. I'm doing it the super dangerous way. I really hope this works! My Berry may die during surgery! ;)

jamigraham Jul 17, 2009 at 4:29 pm
I'm really excited to see RIM updating things such as this! My Storm is really shaping up to be what I had wanted all along!
wojtas25 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:29 pm

83xx Verizon users can look forward to heartache on this one. Awful.
Xopher Jul 17, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Will this work with the 8830WE or other 88xx devices?
Maybe with the .160/5.0 hybrid??
wojtas25 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:37 pm
See my post above

BBBM Jul 17, 2009 at 4:39 pm
"no additional applications were found".. i guess it's why it's a "leaked" version...
BB_Addict_09 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Just loaded up on my .151 Storm 9500 and its working great...
One Q though, right after the install I received this email from RIM (bbadmin@eval.blackberry.com):

pinklipgloss Jul 17, 2009 at 4:42 pm
I did everything right, all the way to using the Application Loader. It found the program and said it installed the new bbm. But when my phone turned back on I have no bbm at all! Not a huge deal I did backup my phone before installing just incase. I went into my applications and it shows my bbm is still loaded. Any suggestions?!? I am super excited to try this new bmm!!! :) thanks!!
wojtas25 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:44 pm
This same on my 8800
nodeuces Jul 17, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Same problem I and many coworkers had. It stinks
rrrebo Jul 17, 2009 at 4:43 pm
My 8300 is soaking in it. Contact pics! Availability status you can understand! Been wanting something new for my BB, but I'm not a huge fan of changing my theme, so this works for me. Sending the link to all my BBM n00b friends.
Firedawg654 Jul 17, 2009 at 4:47 pm
So it installed perfectly on my storm, not so much on my wife's 8330 Curve. It showed as installed, but there was no BBM in her menus. ( even tried to set it as a convenience key) Any help, PM me please.
562curve Jul 17, 2009 at 4:49 pm
can you add pics to contacts ???
HotCelica Jul 17, 2009 at 4:50 pm
If DM fails then do this. Go to where your OS is installed on your PC example: C:/Program Files/Common Files/Research in Motion/Shared/Loader Files/(Insert OS install name)/Java
Copy the .alx file to that folder and then copy and replace all of the .cod files over to the Java folder.
Next open up Loader.exe and the program should show that BBM is going to be updated. Let it do its thing and you are all done!
rizzzzoooo Jul 17, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Where do I find the loader.exe file?
papachango1313 Jul 17, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Thanks - the post helped out big time and worked.
Just wanted to say thanks
562curve Jul 17, 2009 at 4:51 pm

So far so good!
Update: This is Frigg'n Bad a$$! Did not loose any contacts works great, looks great...Conversations are cool...this is the shizat...now all we need is 5.0 for the storm.
applejosh Jul 17, 2009 at 4:59 pm
So by overwriting existing files, I got it to install. But I'm getting that BBMADMIN email message on all my accounts, which makes me a little nervous as I do retrieve work accounts via my personal BlackBerry (just so I don't have to carry my brick of a work phone everywhere). Anyone know what the deal is with these notices? (I'm still thinking about the Etisalat thing from earlier.)
rizzzzoooo Jul 17, 2009 at 5:00 pm
States that it is not compatible with my device so cannot load. What can I do next to get this up and running on my BOLD.
idlattr Jul 17, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Installed on Tour using DM 5.0.
> Downloaded zip file to Windows
> Unzipped zip file
> Launched DM 5.0
> Updated using "Application Loader"
> After Tour reboot checked Applications and sure enough "Blackberry Messenger 5.0.0.8"
Using it now without any problems.

AsosaYoung Jul 17, 2009 at 5:22 pm

I went through desktop manager, as the instructions were on the front of this site. Then as the phone reset, the BBM icon was completely gone, and looked in every folder - still nothing. I did a battery pull with no help. ANY IDEAS??? HELP!!

flamingkitties Jul 17, 2009 at 6:00 pm

copy and paste the ALX file into the main OS folder (contains the CMDA, JAVA and other alx files) then copy and paste the CODs into the JAVA folder, then run APPLOADER.

mshawn11 Jul 17, 2009 at 6:19 pm

SoBroPR Jul 17, 2009 at 6:21 pm
I feel nervous to upgrade my Bold
ksc6000#AC Jul 17, 2009 at 6:21 pm
I'm thinking about doing it, but did it erase anybody's contacts on their 8900? I have quite a bunch, I don't know how to back them up either...
boostnek9 Jul 17, 2009 at 6:22 pm
installed with no problems but for those with issues:
Goto C:/Program Files (x86) if you run 64 bit/ Common Files/ Research In Motion/Shared/Loader Files. Then open the OS you are running, put the ALX file in the first screen, then enter the java folder and copy and paste all cods in there.
this is for the ones with the issue:
"no additional applications designed for your device were found" issue when loading it through desktop manager..
princesuperstar1226 Jul 17, 2009 at 8:47 pm
THIS WORKS FOR 8900!
maddmaxx308 Jul 17, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Does work well using the apploader.exe option. I did NOT lose my contact list. working well.
Used DM 5.0
Used this method as posted by HotCelica:
"If DM fails then do this.
Let it do its thing and you are all done!"
brindaarnold Jul 17, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Had to replace the .cod files but no problems otherwise! Thanks Kevin!!! Did I mention that I LOOOOVE Crackberry?!
brindaarnold Jul 17, 2009 at 6:30 pm
a BIG thanks to Bla1ze for the post!
steevereeno Jul 17, 2009 at 6:35 pm
So what are people doing who have downloaded the new BBM successfully but don't have a viewable icon after the phone resets? I confirmed that it uploaded as it should have because version 5.0.0.8 is listed in my Applications list, but how do I open it or add the icon to my main screen???
lainsauto Jul 17, 2009 at 6:36 pm
seems to work sweet...
Wood_doowk Jul 17, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Working great, first attempt. Bold running 4.6.0.282 via DM 5.0. Used the first method: unzipped folder to desktop -> DM -> Application Loader -> Add/Remove Applications -> Browse to folder, click on alx and it was all good! (Didn't get 'that' email, either) SWEEEEEEEET!!
mshawn11 Jul 17, 2009 at 6:39 pm

Sinneronezz Jul 17, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Yngpapii916 Jul 17, 2009 at 6:53 pm

Will it work if I install it on my 8700g with OS 4.5?
steevereeno Jul 17, 2009 at 6:59 pm
I guess I have to go back to the old BBM until the official release comes out. Obviously there's problems with getting this to work on Verizon's Curve 8330 at the very least. I tried re-downloading and the same problem...no ICON, no way to open it, yet it shows up in my App list. FRUSTRATING!!
ramzi188 Jul 17, 2009 at 7:03 pm
The new BBM is soooooo HOT
jgfan1972 Jul 17, 2009 at 7:07 pm

ksc6000#AC Jul 17, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Just tried it and it works fine on my 8900. I'm running .250 OS. Didn't delete my contacts or anything. I have an icon and everything. It's basically prettier now...that's all really.
princesuperstar1226 Jul 17, 2009 at 7:25 pm

Crazydude1405 Jul 17, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Can someone please explain how to do it !! pleaseeee
Boise IT Jul 17, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Installed on 2 Bolds running .282 and a Curve 8310
Used DM 4.7 and DM 5.0 (Different Computers) as long as you follow the instructions.... FLAWLESS on both! (Curve was easier than the Bold and for that one I used DM 5.0. For the Bolds, I had to use the method of copying in to my installation folder first but for the Curve all was perfect.
Oneshortsleeve Jul 17, 2009 at 7:29 pm

On past devices ive been pretty good at slight hacks but on my bOld and due to my being on Mac ive been hesitant. I could not resist this BBM 5.0
I installed Desktop 5.0 on my old Vaio, downloaded BBM 5. 4.6 for Bold, copied the english COD file and the Blackberry alx file to a new folder, started desktop manager, went to add programs, browsed to the new folder with the alx and english cod files and voila!, it found them. I clicked to open the alx and it put the BBM 5.0 on the files to be installed list. I hit next and it rebooted and its there, 5.0.
Im running .282 on ATT and all is well. It is really cool but I need peeps to PIN me 20 CEA 7F4
EDIT: I just see on a new Tweet that the files can be had now OTA, great...
