Netflix on BlackBerry - Let's do this thing!

And so the Netflix on BlackBerry drama series continues....

In this episode, we have a BlackBerry fan asking Netflix in their support forums why Netflix is not available on BlackBerry 10.

Jeremy, a Netflix employee, replies that the reason is because there is not a commercially available solution for streaming protected content on the platform. Wrong answer.

A movement started earlier today in the CrackBerry forums... pissed off BlackBerry 10 owners are canceling their Netflix services over their lack of support for BlackBerry 10. Will it help? We're not sure. But it sure feels good.

It seems these days, we can't manage to go a day without hearing about some app that may or may not be coming to the BlackBerry 10 platform. It's understandable of course, people want their apps and they want to know if they can get them on BlackBerry 10. If not, they want to know if the apps will ever be available and more importantly if they'll never be available, they want to know why.

Making the headlines once again is Netflix. Over at AllThingsD they've done some digging with their sources and they've proclaimed 'Netflix isn’t developing a version of its app for BlackBerry 10 — native or port.'. Although Netflix gave them no explanation why, AllThingsD's John Paczkowski has concluded what has pretty much been said before, that there is no incentive for Netflix to build the app and that their user base wouldn't grow significantly if there was a Netflix app for BlackBerry 10 so therefore, there is no interest in making one. Netflix

Some images of Netflix running on the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha have shown up and are flying all over the net. The CrackBerry forums are buzzing with more than one thread on the topic, most users asking if they're real or fake. While we can't confirm that Netflix is indeed up and running on BlackBerry 10, we can say that faking shots like these is pretty darn easy (especially coming from an unknown source). All it takes is a few screencaps and some crafty camera work as shown by the image above that Bla1ze made. It takes no time to make a fake.

Hunger Strike for Skype and Netflix!

Here's the deal. When BlackBerry 10 launches later this year, it's critically important that there is no major app gap on the platform. We don't need 500,000 apps (of which 400,000 are crapps), but we do need to have all the major ones there in good functioning order.

Two of the biggies that we still do not have confirmation on are Netflix and Skype. CrackBerry Nation has been very vocal in wanting these two services on the PlayBook/BB10. Heck, we've even done an email petition campaign to the CEO of Skype.

There are lots of good theories as to why Skype and Netflix are not committed to BB10 yet (will save those for another post), but a few days ago RIM's VP of Developer Relations Alec Saunders took to twitter in addressing a question which clarified that it's not RIM holding up the Netflix train. If Netflix asked... RIM would have a team of BlackBerry developers at Netflix's door within 24 hours to get the app built. I'm sure the same would hold true for Skype.

So Netflix... and Skype... let's get with it here and confirm you're coming to BlackBerry 10. Just do it.. or else I'm going to have to start getting desperate and sacrifice myself for the cause . And that's blood (and bad PR) that you don't want on your hands. CrackBerry Kevin to go on a Hunger Strike for Skype and Netflix?? You know I would do it. Don't make me.

Netflix BlackBerry PlayBook

If you've been holding out for a Netflix app for the BlackBerry PlayBook, Flix is here to save the day. Flix is an app that allows you to easily stream your Netflix content to your PlayBook. The app works by transmitting the stream from your PC to your PlayBook over a shared wifi connection. It does currently have some limitations however:

  • Your BlackBerry PlayBook must be on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
  • Flix requires approximately 5 Mbps transfer speed between your PC and BlackBerry PlayBook.
  • When you are watching a Netflix movie on your BlackBerry PlayBook, the computer's audio is redirected to your BlackBerry PlayBook.
  • Windows PC only. (Mac is not supported)
  • There are no player controls such as pause or rewind on the BlackBerry PlayBook at this time. I hope to improve this.

While it's not an official Netflix app (it has no affiliation) it is a great alternative. If you want to give it a go, you can grab it now in BlackBerry App World for $4.99.

Netflix

We've heard plenty about Netflix on the BlackBerry PlayBook already with Netflix having already confirmed they have no plans to offer the services to the device. PlayBook fans spoke out, took to Twitter and posted plenty on the CrackBerry forums aplenty and Netflix eventually noted that while they don’t support Blackberry today, their plans can change.

That seemingly wasn't good enough and now there is a petition posted up started by @PCWHITTLE. Will it help bring Netflix to PlayBook for those that want? Maybe -- but in order for it to work people need to sign it. So if you want it, hit the link below and sign the petition.

Netflix

Those were the words spoken by the official @NetflixHelps account on Twitter earlier. While we've known for quite some time now that Netflix had nothing in the works this was one of the first times the information had come from a Netflix source outside of emails replied to where users had requested knowing if the service was coming. After that Tweet though, it managed to catch the attention of a lot of BlackBerry users who began their own personal boycotts of Netflix letting others know they would be cancelling the service.

Needless to say, if you search on Twitter now for @Netflixhelps you'll see a lot of comments from BlackBerry users. If you're upset about it as well, by all means send them a tweet and let them know or use their contact us page to reach out to their customer service department. Netflix seemingly needs to be reminded they provide a non-essential service. People use Netflix because they offer something they want, if Netflix refuses to offer what they want then Netflix becomes irrelevant and people will cancel their accounts. While you're at it -- let @Skypesupport know you want an app as well.

Movie Vault for BlackBerry PlayBook

We may not have Netflix or Hulu for our BlackBerry PlayBooks yet, but there are some alternatives out there. One of these alternatives is a new app that was released today, called Movie Vault. While connected to wifi or tethered to your BlackBerry smartphone, you have access to over 900 classic movies, with more being added all the time. The movies are arranged by genre but you can also search by keyword, actor, title, director, and more. Movie Vault is integrated with IMDB for cover art and movie information including ratings, plot summary, and other details.

I like this app. It's laid out really well and is easy to navigate. I would like to see a children's category added just to make it easier to find movies that would appeal to my kids, but that's just me. All movies contained within the Movie Vault application are Public Domain works as classified under Creative Commons. You can pick up Movie Vault for $2.99, so why not pop up some popcorn, hook up the HDMI cables, and settle in for some good old fashioned family fun?

I truly enjoy the fact my BlackBerry is connected to the Internet. In theory that means the entire World Wide Web is accessible right from my phone. But unfortunately, most of the web sites are not designed to run on mobile devices. Web masters usually optimize their pages to run on large screens. Even with the most recent BlackBerry devices such as the Pearl, you only get 320 pixels width. Add to this some advanced scripts on some web pages and you can not even access some sites from your BlackBerry. But don’t worry; there are a bunch of sites around there specially customized to run perfectly on your browser. Here at AllBlackBerry.com, we’ve decided to launch a new series of articles about BlackBerry friendly web sites. Today, we are taking a look at the movie space and we’ll give you the absolute “must have” list.
