More BlackBerry Messenger Barcode Oddities

Ever since BlackBerry Messenger 5 leaked, users have been playing around with the barcode system and finding some strange and not so strange things about it. This one however has to fall under the strange category in my opinion.

We got a tip from JJ that if you scan the barcode shown in the example of how to use the barcode system, it comes up with a rather omnious URL from a quite popular site. Go ahead and try it out and let us know what you think. I'm not going to give away where exactly it takes you - but you can see that for yourself. I will say personally, I think someone at RIM who was on the BlackBerry messenger dev team might have insomnia. Thanks JJ!

I also was the first person to comment on the forum post for the "9" barcode on the movie poster like 2 months back.

I went to this site that you have listed and tried scanning the code. Dang then shut my phone off. Was this suposed to be a prank/joke? Because it sure wasnt funny.

This is nothing new. Here in Toronto, Canada i see tons of ads where a company has a BBM bar-code on huge banners or displays across the city, pretty neat actually

is there a way to bring up the scanner option without having to go into Blackberry messenger and "adding a new contact"...?

once i installed this new messenger this bb Group added to my calendar, i always delete similar from the CICAL thingy but not this time, pls help cos this annoying me very much. all the calendar notes moved to this new group, cannot invite properly etc.. :((

How can I do a screen print or get my barcode sent to an email so I can print it out or put it on business cards?

You'll need to use an app that takes screen shots off of your phone. There are a few here on crackberry that range from a few bucks to free, check it out at the app store.

When viewing your own barcode to "display to others", press your BB Menu button. There is an option in the menu to save it as a file. Once saved, transer to PC over USB, email, IM, etc.

you can email your barcode to to your pc email not your bb and print it out or save it. when you go into bbm5 my profile go to display my barcode and just save it.

Don't forget to read the alt text by hovering your mouse over the image and letting it idle there.

Love the site and I'm not the least bit surprised that a Blackberry software guy is a fan as well, lol

There is! Its called edocrab, "Barcode" spelled backwards lol where have you been?? lol but its not as sensitive as the BBM but its a GREAT app u can scan everything and it finds it at a cheaper price

thank you anonymous BBM coder who burnt the midnight oil to deliver us some great BBM features! see how productive you can be with insomia?

So, how do I go as to making my own barcode(s)...
I like the 5.0 I had the leaked version of it. It was pretty cool. I liked that you could post a pic of what you liked instead of the regular ol' generic face. Now just gettin the word out to the customers.....btw...i still want to know about the barcode creator = ^ _ ^ =

Maybe it's just me, but I think that along with contacts, we BB users, are only able to access url's with the bb code scanner. I've tried different sites, and different types of data: SMS, plain text, even just phone numbers, and each time it continues to try and scan or it kills my phone, as if it had powered down or reset itself. Any other opinions out there or someone who's tried a qr code creator that actually works for the BB? Oh BTW I'm using a Storm1.

I had the same problem when I created a barcode on that site someone on here added the link for my phone froze and restarted itself and I panicked! I thought it gave my phone some sort of so I won't be doing that anymore..Oh I have the Tour but I scanned Kevin's barcode with no problem

the scanner works on my storm..i've tried it on 4.7 os and and it works great...i'm not sure whats going on with your phone. someone posted contact addy bbm info and my phone scanned that barcode no problem..i didnt add the contact...i just wanted to make sure it worked. and i just made a bar code for my cell number and it pulled right up.

One of my favorite sites for a laugh! I figured some of RIM's coders must be pretty cool, but a particular geek (or group of geeks) definitely gets even more cred with me for that one!

...hmmm, I shall create a barcode of my own, why, I'll even give it a name. It shall be called, the code for my abode. Wow, that has a slight ring to it, don't you think? Oh, dear, I'm ranting. Well, carry on then, I have added my opinion where I saw it was needed. Good Day!

Ok, hopefully no one will ostracize me for having too much time on my hands or being for lack of a better work, anal retentive. I just needed to know why the code reader wasn't working like we all wish it would. Well I made a little discovery and someone one else has probably figured it out too, but I haven't seen it posted yet. So go here to scan the barcode and see what I'm talking about.

O K, wtf! its cool that it can recognize and scan but ANYWAYS, waste of time. Thought it'll be something cool, yet its OMG, stupid!

Surely I hope you mean the BBM, if you haven't read the rest of the post, then you'd know that the app is severely limited with what it can read, at least for now. It amazes me the amount of people who always criticize, well shut up and go do something cool, then we could be amazed by you. Did you even read what you scanned? If you had then you would've understood the purpose of the post!

my phone (curve 8320) will read every barcode i make that contains numbers only. The second I add even one letter, it fails to read it whether I choose phone number, text, html etc

Basically being bored at work I used this website to test barcodes that I created.

So far the ones that I got to work on my Tour is the location (which opened bb maps and pulled up the location), the email (which opened a new email to the address), the phone number (which dialed the scanned number), and the url (which opened the website).

I couldn't get the calendar, contact info, or the SMS to work. Hope this feature advances to include these functions because it's pretty awesome.

Man I know that since the first day the BlackBerry Messenger BETA was leaked. Old stuff and boring, next time I hope you come with some real good news (NEW Please)...

I have the same problem where a group calendar is created once you join a group in the new Blackberry messenger. there are no service books created for this Group unlike emails (CICAL) and facebook. Calendar entries are moved to this new retarded group which cannot be deleted.

if anyone has a way to rid this calendar. please post it.
