Mark Rigley of QNX and Thorsten Heins, President and CEO, BlackBerry took the stage at BlackBerry Live 2013 to give everyone a good look at the QNX Bentley GT and show off the power of BlackBerry 10. We've seen the Bentley before at CES when Dan Dodge gave the CrackBerry Nation a demo but this time around it was a little more advanced, as they were able to demo updating the software on the car directly through a BlackBerry 10 device. Of course, no demo happens without some fun being added so Mark and Thorsten gave Vivek Bhardwaj (who faked being on vacation) a call over BBM Video using the dashboard display. Awesome!

Considering their Mercedes sponsorship, it should've been a Mercedes. A Bentley is kind of arrogant and not relatable to most bb consumers (or most people on general)

You got a point there. However, Bentley spells premium and top of the social elite. Something most of us can't relate to but still admire. Good for marketing purposes I guess

I disagree. I have a Bentley GT, love it, and would love to see BB10 come to it soon. Mercedes is there partner but the Bentley test vehicle was around way before the Mercedes partnership.

camera531

Are they trying to market to the wealthy? Maybe they could've shown real world applications in a Mercedes, BMW or even a Ford, demonstrating the next big "mainstream" step for bb10, in the general consumer's world.

GeneralHerzog

It always starts with the high end vehicles and then comes to the rest of the market.

Having said that though, QNX also controls the media units in Hyundai so the wait won't really be that long.

Correct. I remember my Scorpio and 525i having useful features like the ability to estimate fuel economy and range on the fly, and they were both early 1990s models. These were premium features for the wealthy, but 20 years later, you can find them in Toyota and other "common" people's cars.

I guess I think of BlackBerry and their "mobile computing" initiatives to be more of a mainstream concept.

jinxednuance

They have been working on the Bentley well before they endorsed AMG.

This is nothing but a pure marketing stunt. Bentley = premium, whether you like it or not, so people will see this: Bentley = premium. BB10 working with Bentley, then BB10 = premium. Even though, obviously, this will be targeted to mainstream.

camera531

It makes it seem much more conceptual and expensive, and not close to primetime. That was my take from it.

axllebeer

Looking good. I want this in my current car. I suppose that's what the new BB10 phones and a windshield mount are for though.

ARWestenberger

This. I want a head unit featuring BB10 for my car too. I could always mount my Zee10 or PlayBook, but it wouldn't be the same thing.

Reminds me of the tech in the Tesla.

If this is what they mean by Mobile Computing, well, I guess I was premature and purchased my his and her's Bentley's last week without this option.

Really, isn't everyone racing out to get one now?

The Range Rover

Who cares what vehicle it's in! I wouldn't even mind if it was in a Lada. The technology is what is important. It's an excellent demonstration of how BlackBerry and QNX are looking way beyond the Hand held market to increase revenue streams. This will keep them competitive in such a fast paced, cut throat industry. BlackBerry Rocks!!!!!!!!!

Lada...now there is a brand I haven't heard for a while...lol.

Lada?? Where are from man? Good pick of a brand to make your point! (I don't think 50% of the users on this site ever heard about it)

Think bigger.....bentley is owned by volkswagen....who also owns audi, porsche, and lamboghini. how many more years before a vw golf has BlackBerry OS

VR6

so was that QNX or BB10 running in that Bentley? Thor said BB10 but it's obviously a custom interface.

scalemaster34

Think it was more mock up than real OS. Let's face it, if they don't have a Working version for the PlayBook and even the Z10 OS needs improvement.

I understand why that was the first video chat between a phone and a car... I can foresee safety concerns with video conferencing while driving..... :P

boldbalance

I was thinking that too!

If you watch the full keynote, they mention it goes to voice once you start moving.

joshua_sx1

James Bond got already this so called "mobile computing"... long time ago...

Anything else?

Until they fix the sound alert notification for text and emails while on a call (Z10), I don't care what car they put it in. As soon as business owners realize that they are losing potential customers because of the lack of the notifications they will jump ship. I wonder if that's the reason the stock isn't moving. This one business feature is a big deal that blackberry is hoping it get swept under the rug. I won't let them off the hook.

Cool... Let's hope however that it woks better than BB10 usb-media-music connection does in my car. Connection was flawless on BB7 but doesn't doesn't work with BB10. No more music :-( . Maybe, just maybe, making sure the current product is up to par would be a better product introduction practice. Otherwise love my Q10.

camera531

I'd love my q10 too, if I could actually buy one in the US...

drahcir61

I guess Hazader doesn't understand the importance of business customers.

Opening BBM to ios and android is starting to make more sense now

jgrzadka

If BlackBerry wants to lead the auto industry they should get on it fast. As of now android and iPhone have more car apps and patents than my z10. I wish crackberry would do a special coverage on the bb10 automotive workshop.

Moar plz! I wanted the vid to be longer. I guess I'll have to wait and see if CB releases more coverage. Bridge with the car UI? Who knows?!?

No one will going to beat BlackBerry 10. This is how BlackBerry control the world. Next time, BlackBerry will cook and do the laundry for us.
