Mike Lazaridis confirms RIM has plans for the PlayBook to come in different sizes

Research In Motion Co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis has just hit the stage at the All Things D: Dive Into Mobile conference and already he has confirmed to Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher that Research In Motion has plans to offer tablets in different sizes. When questioned regarding the current size of the BlackBerry PlayBook Mike Lazaridis noted, "We’ve got different sizes potentially coming". In addition to the size of the PlayBook being questioned, Lazridis was also questioned when the QNX operating system would be available for BlackBerry smartphones. Mike's reply still leaves us wondering when exactly but gives us an idea of what they are waiting for. Lazaridis stated when Research In Motions moves BlackBerry smartphones to dual core systems; we will then see the QNX operating system arrive and also noted the "next generation of BlackBerry smartphones will be great". We'll have more as the updates continue as well as video as soon as we can but, for now you can view the live blog over at the All things D website.

Can't wait for the new playbook to come out now. And now I'm more excited knowing they got some dual core processor smartphones coming out hopefully beginning or middle of next year. Go RIM! Finally catching up to the competition! :)

I'm also excited about the Playbook just like any other Blackberry user, however is anyone following the live blog? They're hitting Mike with some pretty tough questions and he's giving vague, B.S. answers to all of them lol, pretty amusing, although I will ultimately judge RIM by their actions in the following year.

gregorylkelly

This should shut up all the people saying the Playbook is too small.

jorGeorge

LOL...

Walt cuts him off: There’s a growing consensus that BlackBerry is “looking old compared to some of the other platforms.” So: If PlayBook is future of the BlackBerry, when does this OS get there?

Mike: Answers that BlackBerry OS is about multicore products. [?]

That's great Mike, but don't wait until everyone else is doing quad core before you bring us dual core!

Holly hell I just read the D blog you linked to...... it's bad for RIM ....basically the thing read like an ad for apple and android. And downright hostility to blackberry and RIM.
I really hope this playbook gets to the market on time and BB spends about a billion dollars (and not I'm not exaggerating) on marketing otherwise RIM is sunk. Very very disappointing to read the spin of the blog and the people on stage.

Reads like Q: Mike why is blackberry now a piece of shit, A: Mike responds but I can't understand anything he's saying. Q: Mike why are Apple and Android better than Blackberry? A: Mike says something but I can't understand him.

jeeezz .... baaaaaaad

Culex316

I don't see it as an ad for Apple or Android but rather an honest call out on RIM about their products, and why they haven't been up to par with the competition in certain respects.

jwmax

Sorry but I'm skeptical when a guy who writes a tech blog for a living claims as many times as he does that he can't understand what Mike is saying. That's downright hostility.

My prediction apple will come up with a somewhat updated iPad 2 and the media frenzy will kill RIM and the playbook. RIM better put on the biggest media blitz of their lives when this thing comes out.

I also hated to hear tracking first quarter which almost surely means it will not hit that target.

Culex316

You don't have to be sorry for anything, if the tech guy can't get what Mike's saying, it means he's spewing the usual "let's try to defuse attention away from this hardball question by spewing nonsense about our global markets, multicore, leaping into the next decade and other vague bullshit that no one will understand for jack shit"

Granted, he also can't directly admit his company has dropped the ball since that would negatively affect RIM's stock.

We'll see how the Playbook does against the iPad 2...I don't necessarily see it being completely defeated by the iPad 2, but not widely adopted either...the Playbook could still find a niche/market among RIM fans or people wanting an alternative to Apple's walled-garden system.

As for "tracking first quarter" lol, what the hell is that supposed to mean? Do I have to sign up for bullshitease lessons to understand what he's saying?

I sense a little apple fan boy in you. I feel bad for the hostility of RIM but you should understand that the iPad will ultimately tank like all of apple's products. Apple may have 100% of the tablet market now but steady state it'll be below 20% if even that, just as in PCs

Apple had it's chances with mac but they've blown it when OSX was leaps ahead of XP they should have put out market share grabbing products but they didn't now WIN7 has a far superior user experience. And in case you wonder I own 4 Macs but I am now transitioning out of them because they no longer hold an advantage.

Hey guys, the video is up and it apparently clarifies a lot more than what that blogger was letting on. Mike actually did indeed answer every question, even stated right off the bat that they were working on dual core cpu smartphones as we speak. For every question that was asked he did give a solid answer and really didn't beat around the bush if you listen to what he's saying. Some misinterpret his speaking of the new smartphones (hopefully storm3) for speaking of the playbook. But he clearly says the playbook multicore cpus are the way of the next generation of Blackberry smartphones.

Yes, RIM has been forcing the issue of becoming a Global company first, as most of the world is still 2g or just getting 3g. RIM firmly has their grasp on that market. Now with the new tech coming next year (if not sooner) RIM will be pushing the envelope to remain ahead of the game. If this dualcore Storm actually comes out next year, clearly RIM is ahead of the pack and officially takes back the smartphone market.

BlackStormRising

Two of the most incompetent journalists ever. The sum of their knowledge is Apple makes a phone, Android is a phone and "I used to have a Blackberry, and now I don't". And the world outside of the US is called Sumatra. Will they ask Steve Jobs when the Mac will take over the enterprise market, or can the iPhone survive the Android juggernaut, that threatens to become the VHS to Apple's Betamax? Not likely.

robertdusa

If the QNX OS can run so fluidly on the Playbook without being optimized for dual core, why do we have to wait for dual core BlackBerries? In fact, why would I want a dual core BB? Do I really want to worry that it's burning through my battery?

Give us a Bold 9080:

- QNX
- Touchscreen
- 1 Ghz CPU
- 1GB RAM
- OpenGL
- 802.11n
- NFC
- 3 or 5 megapixel front facing camera
- 5 or 8 megapixel rear facing camera *with* HD video capture
- Option to save apps to SD card

It's been quite awhile since I've seen BB news hit the blogosphere outside of CB.......of course there was hate. I will say what I came across GIZMODO, http://tinyurl.com/2fo9qwv, today had my bottom lip hanging in confusion.

I really wish there was some video footage out there of some "live blog" that RIM CEO, Mike Lazaridis, featured in a Q&A that took place. Of course GIZ didn't highlight so much the playbook, but Mike defending the use of "old technology" with RIM and the BB world. With some of the snippets provided by GIZ (they say it could be random journal notes) I'm also left a bit confused. Again, I would like to find some video footage of this to really anchor my own opinion.

I've been wanting to invest in RIM (RIMM) for some time and still have high hopes for them, but if what they say here is true then I better continue to do my research before throwing my money and ol' which-a-way. I really hope this Playbook pulls RIM out of the rut (think good thoughts, think good thoughts).

I love the way how Mike answered all of the questions without a direct answer... this guys is a freaking genius, think about it.

The reason why Walt and Kara and the public is so confused with the questions is because they were expecting, Mike to say, yes we're just going to copy Apple's and Google's business model and be the same. (Boring) so then you all can rave how RIM is just copying, on blogs sites and so on

What Mike is looking for is a paradigm shift in the mobile market and not just spends millions of dollars copying Apples and Google’s model. They want to be different.

RIM has a really big advantage for the following.

1. QNX - Nothing competes hands down, I won't be surprised if it makes it to desktops and laptops in the distant future
2. Documents to Go - This will grow big once it’s pushed to tablets for Business customers
3. Enterprise Security & mobile Security - a very must as I feel that in the future there is going to be a big issue on other mobile devices with security.
4. Email & Communication - The best there is.

The rest will follow for an example, gaming, multimedia and so forth... but at least RIM has laid the essential foundation which will take the competition a long time to replicate and by then RIM will be way in front.

Wow I don't know if it's just the blogger or if Mike just doesn't understand the questions. Or if he just tried to avoid them. It doesn't seem like he answered hardly any of the questions he was asked.

I sure hope they finish off QNX and get this to market and it be a hit. I heard today the new iPad 2 is coming Feb 2011. Possibly a launch in Canada April 2011. They should really beat the 2nd generation iPad to market. It would help sales.

GottaHateDizPimp

Mike understood the questions just didn't have any good answers for them. Check out the Engadget blog. I love when the writer for PCmag said I own a Torch and its slow and has a low res screen. And Mike responded with some BS. Seriously when will you people wake up and stop buying the same phones over and over again. Same os tad bit more memory same product. And Crackberry hasn't posted any of the recent market share results and sales. And what people intend for their next device to be. I wonder why ? Doesn't look to great for RIM and this is coming from a former Blackberry Tour user. Why would I upgrade to a Bold 9650 ? I moved on just like anyone who doesn't have a poster of Mike in their room. My gf had to use my blackberry for a couple of days before her new phone came and hated it. Said it took too long to do anything on it. I wonder if Blackberries even have good battery life. I didn't use mines unless I absolutely had to. And with other platforms upgrading security features in their mobile OS your starting to see iPhones and Android in business use. Ir RIM doesn't get it together they'll lose all but the highest level of security markets.

sf49ers

stop trolling, if other so called advanced platforms can't get my things done as reliably and fastly as BB then what's the point even if they have glossy screens or screaming processors. My wife has an iPhone 4 but I am more impressed with my Torch and it is fluid and does well what it is built for. RIM understands that the current generation mobile market is more about mobile computing than telecom and infact they pioneered the smartphone in the first place. Current day phones are a subset of mobile computing; they only solve a particular need, but no phone in today's market solve all or even most needs. All along RIM was looking for a right kind of hardware with power efficiency, and now hardware evolving and QNX in its armour it has a bright future.

GottaHateDizPimp

Actually I'm not a "troll". Why don't you guys stop being trolls and actually get some mobile news that isn't on bias ass Crackberry. Open your eyes and face the facts. Personally I don't like being behind in technology. When I could be at the forefront

can you please confirm SD/storage integration alongside the amount you get in-built. I mean Photo frames and mp3 players can do it. why can't the PlayBook.
