In Memory of Russell Shaw

Russel ShawThis is sad news for the BlackBerry World... I just found out tech journalist and BlackBerry guru Russell Shaw passed away on Friday, March 14th. He was on a reporting trip in San Jose, traveling from his home base in Portland, Oregon.

Russell wrote on a variety of topics, but in the BlackBerry space you could find him writing originally for BBHub and more recently for ZDNet covering The BlackBerry Beat. Russell was always the first to bring to the blogosphere word of new BlackBerry patents filed by Research in Motion. Searching back through CrackBerry.com, I don't think a month has gone by in the past year where we haven't linked to a story that Russell "broke".

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Russell and his family. He will truly be missed.

I knew Russell in Atlanta GA back in the late ’70’s, early ’80’s when he was still a well-known and respected music critic and journalist, prior to his move to the Left Coast. I ran sound for a local band, and Russell always used to try and get my goat by saying that I “had a pussy ear” (Russell liked BIIIG BASS!) He could always be found backstage talking and joking with the musicians and their entourages. Russell was a kind and gentle soul, who went on to become one of the elder statesman of Tech Revolution jouralism. After having discovered Russell’s Blackberry Beat blog several months ago, I emailed him and we were able to catch up on the past 25 years of our respective lives. I feel very fortunate to have had that opportunity and to have known such a grand fellow. Russell, you will be missed, but not forgotten….
