Meebo, the web service that offers online instant messaging across multiple social networks has rolled out their BlackBerry client in beta form. Users looking for a better way to keep all their social network friends together can now download the free application to their devices to get started. The application, which uses a custom built UI allows you to access your Meebo account on the go. Since Meebo supports AIM, Yahoo, GTalk and more you shouldn't have to really worry about not being able to stay in touch again. You can learn more about Meebo via their website and if you're wanting to take the application for a spin, registration can be completed on your BlackBerry. I'm using a Storm 9530. 2.3 mb is a little too big for me, maybe when I obtain the elusive Storm 3, I might give this a shot.

Just set it up and Facebook chat works! This is the first app that I've been able to get Facebook chat to work on. Wicked! :).
XWolf Sep 21, 2010 at 3:17 am
Does BeeJiveIM not work for you?
Just curious.
ivanio Sep 21, 2010 at 11:52 am
I tried beejive and FB didn't work for me on it either.

I am been using Nimbuzz for a few weeks and the battery life of my 9700 is donE in one day even thought I don't use my phone so much. Love the facebook and skype chat. Just download Meebo and looks smooth, the only thing I don't like is that there's no Skype chat =(

Or no twitter chat :(
stoneland Sep 21, 2010 at 1:17 pm
What the hell is "Twitter chat"? Twitter isn't a chat application. Are you talking about posting to Twitter or something?
cvberry Sep 21, 2010 at 1:18 am
I use it all the time. Glad there's a BB app now.
Finch250 Sep 21, 2010 at 1:52 am

matyc Sep 21, 2010 at 1:55 am

mad_eyes Sep 21, 2010 at 3:07 am

honestly i'm waiting for an imo.im app for bb.
they have one on iphone & android that looks great.
XWolf Sep 21, 2010 at 3:31 am
It lists some IM services then says "and more". You have to supply an email address to get a link? I hate that! Anyway, have given an email addy but not heard anything as yet...
So anyway - does this do IRC?
XWolf Sep 22, 2010 at 5:21 am
Shame about the lack or IRC support, oh well I have an alternative IRC client, would have just been nice to have it integrated with the others.
Anyway - for those who haven't taken the plunge, here is the supported list:

Sorry for the lazy screenshot, was just quicker.

CONS:
- it doesn't have an alert tone.
- it randomly shows a tiny "mail letter" icon on my FB friends that somehow suggests that I have an on-going chat session with them when in actual there is NO exchange of message going on.
- the letters on the chat is so small. it's very hard to read. there's no setting to adjust it.
PROS:
- the interface is very nice and smooth.
babyboy5102 Sep 21, 2010 at 2:18 pm
Its not a mail letter its an away sign that tells you that your buddy is either away or idle.
cp3for3 Sep 21, 2010 at 8:38 am
Registered, signed on to AIM and MSN...buddies still not loading. Just lost half a bar from letting it load. It works on the desktop Meebo. Gonna wait this one out. The facebook chat seems cool. I just don't like how you have to "connect" to facebook. Beejive bypasses this. I hope it's stable though.
cp3for3 Sep 21, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Update: nevermind...it works now. I installed/uninstalled it a number of times. I even let it run for a while (and ate up my battery along the way). I do see the Meebo preferences on the options (ie vibrate, play sound, etc.). It looks good so far. Not sure about the battery drain.
Finch250 Sep 22, 2010 at 2:58 am
omggggg where do u see the preferences i cant find it at alll

Hi all,
Thanks for the great feedback! We'll be rolling out updates steadily in the near future, and we hear all your questions, concerns and suggestions.
gelaigurl05: Is the 'tiny mail icon' you're referring to actually the status indicator? If your friends are away (on any protocol) you'll see a little orange colored 'away' symbol over the corner of their icon in the buddy list.
To those not seeing notifications: check your Options screen (and look for Meebo in there) and turn on the notifications there (on the Torch it's under 'Third Party Applications'). We don't yet tie into the system notifications system or profiles (but it will come!)
To those of you who don't want to give your email address to receive an automagic download link, you can find downloads for all supported OS versions here: http://www.meebo.com/support/article/134/ (as well as fantastic help content!)
Let me know if I can help any more,
Cheers,
Paris (from Meebo)

Please support Cross-Platform Group chat soon. I, myself and many people I know need this feature.
Thank you
cp3for3 Sep 21, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Product looks great however communication between my Meebo web site widget and the Blackberry app doesn't work. Both sides can see each other however they cannot communicate to each other. Is it a bug? BTW, my website is at www.livingscrapbooks.com
g_sho Sep 21, 2010 at 10:25 am
Does the application support landscape orientation for text entry on the Storm 1/2? I don't mind typing in Portrait but this app would be even better if I could use the full keyboard (stretched out) in landscape mode.
FMB8900 Sep 21, 2010 at 10:35 am
it keeps saying "Sorry, Meebo is having trouble connecting. Try again later."
I have full 3G bars and im on wifi now, the Account is correct, ive tried 2 accounts the password is correct, and both work on the Meebo website. i even removed and reinstalled the application twice, and did 2 battery pulls.... and nothing works...
anyone else having issues with connecting?

I don't see any mention of meebo supporting push messages. The main reason I use beejive is because of it's push feature. Battery life is always a concern so this is fairly important.
Paris BA Sep 21, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Hi all,
Again, thanks for the GREAT feedback - you guys are awesome!
Regarding push notifications: we'll be looking into it as we progress through our beta. Right now we do not use push.
Battery drain: again, we'll be making it more efficient as we go.
For landscape orientation for typing with the software keyboard: it'll come! Thanks for expressing interest; that solidifies the fact that it's a desired feature!
If you're having trouble connecting, please let me know what manner of connection you're using? BES? BIS? WiFi? I can look into things.
Thanks!
Paris (from Meebo)

I'm using BIS + WiFi with APN turn off. Thanks
cgnovelo Sep 21, 2010 at 1:11 pm
It works with wifi, which is a huge plus for me :)
Also, the account I already had worked with no problems.
But I didn't like that if the app is minimized, it opens a popup on my screen and no sound or blinking led, so unless your full attention is on the chat, you'll miss any messages. No way to configure anything either.

I can get around the size of the app. However it's hard to know when someone wants to talk to you since it wont even pop an icon up on the homescreen for a new message let alone atleast have a generic beap or buzz or something when you recieve a mesage

sorry my home net lagged out sorry for the same message more than once
babyboy5102 Sep 21, 2010 at 2:22 pm
My only problem is that its not integrated in my message folder that would be the icing on the cake. This app is great works perfectly on my 9700 now all I need is the messaging integration and for berry buzz to start supporting it....
MacAlert Sep 21, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Anyone getting any home screen notifications?
miggles Sep 21, 2010 at 2:55 pm
I LOVE meebo but don't have unlimited text, am i going to end up paying a per-message charge if i use it? :(
tallazbubba Sep 21, 2010 at 5:42 pm
So yeah. You can add emoticons but can not add symbols like % or &...
odd... http://www.meebo.com/support/request/77021tqskug

I added the app today and it seems to run a bit slow. I am going to delete the app.
chrissyberry Sep 21, 2010 at 9:05 pm
It works fine on my blackberry tour. However, I did have to do a battery pull out before my list showed.
tomyt Sep 21, 2010 at 8:42 pm
> I LOVE meebo but don't have unlimited text, am i going to end up paying a per-message charge if i use it? :(
Meebo uses your data plan. So your sms limit won't matter here.
Paris: Thanks for your info on the push feature. Given it's the first release and it's in beta, it looks fantastic. Can't wait until push support is here and I can use meebo on the phone and on the computer full time.
It has been a long time since I've felt not neglected as a blackberry user from some of the cool apps folks (not that current bb apps aren't cool!) :) so thankyou.
chrissyberry Sep 21, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Pros: Free!, logs into multiple IM accounts, chat history, simple design
Cons: No led indicator, no push notification, does not have option to save Meebo user name and password during login, and adding Skype would be a plus
Please fix these problems! Thanks Meebo!
