Hackers have gained access to the personal data of up to 2.4 million Carphone Warehouse customers, the UK-based mobile retail giant has today admitted. The breach is said to have originated in the systems related to Carphone Warehouse stores, as well as the OneStopPhoneShop.com, e2save.com and Mobiles.co.uk websites.
The data potentially breached included names, addresses, date of birth information and bank details of customers, along with encrypted credit card data of 90,000 customers. According to an executive quoted by The Telegraph, the company will be informing those who may be affected.
Sebastian James, chief executive of Dixons Carphone, said: "We take the security of customer data extremely seriously, and we are very sorry that people have been affected by this attack on our systems." "We are, of course, informing anyone that may have been affected, and have put in place additional security measures," he added. The company said that the customer information of Currys and PC World, and "the vast majority" of Carphone Warehouse customer data is held on separate systems and has not been affected."
