January 28th 2014 saw the global rollout of BlackBerry 10.2.1. It brings a lot of nice new features to the BlackBerry 10 experience that many have wanted for a while, one of which is the ability to have apps run in the background so it doesn't have to be kept open in an Active Frame. An app that gets the ability to run in the background is called "headless" and must be granted long running permission by BlackBerry. Headless permission is great for apps like wallpaper changers or LED notification apps.

Many have apps were released with headless permission even before BlackBerry 10.2.1 was officially released. With 10.2.1 leaks around many have been enjoying these apps for a while now. We have mentioned a few of them before but now is the time to get a list going. Without further ado, here are the apps currently available with headless permission.

FlipShush

Flip Shush

Flip Shush is a nifty little app that allows you to pause media or mute phones calls by simply flipping your BlackBerry device over. Flip Shush was one of the first apps to go headless and is a great app in certain situations. While there is a free version, you will need the full version to get headless ability. The full version also allows you to mute notifications and phone calls too.

Profile Changer Pro

Profile Changer

Profile Changer Pro is an app I use daily. It allows you to set custom profiles for whatever situation your are in. You can even set up a profile for upcoming calendar events too. This is a great app for those who attend meetings or events regularly and you need to put your device into silent mode. Just set up a profile and it will automatically change. I love this app even more since it has gone headless. It even has geofencing capabilities to automatically change profile when you're in a location set by you.

Hub++

HUB++

Hub++ is a popular app LED notification app but it does a lot more than that. You can set up missed call notifications per contact too. The app is very customizable. Hub++ is an app many users really wanted to see go headless and I’m very glad that it has.

Phone Tap

Phone Tap - Call Recorder

Phone Tap allows you to securely record phone calls. You can record calls automatically or on demand. Then you can add tag recordings with colors and labels. There is also the ability to password protect the app. Please note that there are laws in some countries regarding the recording of phone calls without the knowledge of the other party. That is why the app is not available in some countries including the U.K.

Battery and System Analyzer

Battery and System Analyzer

BaSA for short, this is an app that lets you see everything that’s happening under the hood. You can monitor usage of the battery, CPU, RAM, storage as well as cellular and Wi-Fi. All the information is presented in a graph form. You can tweak the settings to get a better view of things too.

Learn more / Download Battery and System Analyzer

Aerize LockPic

Aerize LockPic

Aerize LockPic lets you use a different wallpaper for your Homescreen and your lock screen. Natively, BlackBerry does not allow you to use a different back for the lock screen. While for most, like myself, I don’t mind, there are some who like to have something different. Aerize LockPic is the app for that.

Learn more / Download Aerize LockPic

Power Tools

Power Tools

Power Tools is an app that packs a lot of different functions in one place. You can block messages with it, schedule times to automatically turn on/off Bluetooth, shred files, have an automatic wallpaper changer and lots, lots more. It also has a nice Active Frame that displays a lot of useful information, even though it's now headless, that feature is still there for those who want to see device info at a glance.

Color LED Message

Color LED Messages

For those who like to set different LED colors for different notifications that come into your BlackBerry device, Color LED Message is another app does that and has been given headless approval so that it doesn't need to run in an Active Frame.

ClipMan Clipboard Manager

ClipMan Clipboard Manager

ClipMan Clipboard Manager is a powerful clipboard manager to use on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone. It monitors the device clipboard and will save all entries found. You can then carry out a search to find things you previous wrote and need to write again. You can create templates too. A great app for those times  when you forget to save something.

Watcher

Watcher

Watcher is another one of those multi-tool type apps that give you a few functions in one. Like setting the LED color, blocking phone calls and creating notification profiles. There's also the option to set a vibration for when calls connect or disconnect. I feature I quite like.

Call Alert

Call Alert

Call Alert is a phone utility app allowing you to tweak things related to the phone app on your BlackBerry 10 device. You can record calls, block calls, even automatically hang up calls. It also offers an LED notification option. You can also set a vibration for when a call connects, disconnects or fails to connect. There is even the ability to have the camera flash light up when a call comes in.

On Location Headless App

On Location Headless App

OnLocation is a geofencing app that allows your BlackBerry device to perform certain actions when you’re within a certain area or even when you leave a location. Such as have your BlackBerry device turn off the Wi-Fi connectivity when you leave your house or send a message to someone when you arrive at work or other venue.

SMS Blocker

SMS Blocker

SMS Blocker is a great to keep those pesky text messages at bay. It automatically blocks SMS messages from unknown numbers but you can tweak and add legitimate ones to a white list. Extra features include the ability to customize LED notifications and vibrate alerts, as well as to password protect the app.

Wallpaper Changer

Wallpaper Changer

The name of the app says it all really. One of the first apps to go headless, Wallpaper Changer allows you to have a rotating wallpaper. It was an app that many wanted to go headless and perhaps put people off it due to it not being headless. But it’s time to rejoice as it can run headless on your BlackBerry 10.2.1 running device.

SayIt

SayIt

SayIt has been a popular app here in the CrackBerry community. A voice recognition app, you can now activate it using the media keys on your BlackBerry 10 device. You can search the web, map locations, YouTube and even Wikipedia. It also currently offers text-to-voice in 44 languages and voice-to-text in 18 languages.

Blaq

Blaq

Hugely popular Twitter client, Blaq received a big update recently that added Hub integration as well as background permission. It's top Twitter client that is in my top 5 apps. It allows multiple accounts, real-time Twitter streaming and is just a beautifully designed BlackBerry 10 app.

Call Timer Ext

Call Timer Ext

Call Timer Ext is an app that allows you to set a vibrate alert when a predefined call duration has been reached. Not everyone has unlimited calls and this is aimed at those who don’t want to run over their call allowance or even to monitor it better. You can set your phone to vibrate once the call connects and then set it to vibrate after a certain time has gone by. You can also set reminder vibrations if you continue the call.

Voice Recorder

Voice Recorder

The name of the app says it all. This is a voice recording app. With it now headless, you can just set a button to activate the recording, without having to open the app. You can record in three different formats - AMR, M4A and WAV. There is also a voice-to-text option too.

Learn more/Download Voice Recorder

Call Recorder + Voice Recorder

Call Recorder

Another recording app, this one can record calls and voices notes for you. Like many other call recording apps, it does need to have the speaker on in order to get the full call recording. You can use the media keys as shortcuts to start the recording process.

Call Vibration

Call Vibration

Just as the name suggest, this app allows you to set a vibration for when a phone calls or disconnects. There are many of these apps around in BlackBerry World with a few of them going headless too. Use cases for apps like these would be for when you’re on the move or perhaps trying to multitask and you just want to pick up your phone once the call connects. As the time for connecting a call can vary.

PhotoUploader

PhotoUploader

One of my favourite apps has gone headless. PhotoUploader is an app that let’s you directly upload photos to your Dropbox or Box account. Probably more useful for Dropbox users as the native Box app will do this. It doesn’t upload immediately, it’s more of a polling app that you can set to pull new photo additions every so often but it does the job it needs to do. Uploads photos directly to Dropbox.

Data Usage Counter

Data Usage Counter

This is the type of app many have been wanting to go headless. For those who do not have an unlimited data allowance, this app will monitor your data usage. Having to have it open in an Active Frame was quite annoying as sometimes you’d forget and so you couldn’t monitor your usage properly. Now that it has gone headless, it is definitely a lot better for data monitoring.

Geo Profiles

Geo Profiles

Geo Profiles is a geofencing app that lets you predefine things you want your phone to do whenever you’re in a particular location. You can change your notification profile, wallpaper or BBM status once you enter a preset location. It’s free to download and you get a 20 day trial to give it a whirl.

Paper Changer

Paper Changer

Paper Changer is a simple wallpaper changer app. Just point to the folder or photos you want to rotate as your wallpaper and then set it to rotate every 1 minute to 24 hours. There are plenty of these apps around but it’s all about preference and choice.

Mail Call

Mail Call

Mail Call is an app that will send an email to a specified address whenever a call comes through. Not quite sure what kind of situation you would use such an app but it’s available in BlackBerry World and has headless approval.

Color ID

Color ID

Color ID is another LED notification app. Letting your define the LED notification to a set colour for certain messages or contacts. This was an app that was made available for free during the 25 day giveaway during December 2013. Another LED notification app to go headless.

Profiler

Profiler

Profiler is an automated profile changer app. Much like Profile Changer Pro, you can schedule your phone to change profiles at a certain time or during a calendar event. Apps like these do have more appeal when they can run headless and Profiler has that ability.

Phone Assistant

Phone Assistant

Phone Assistant is another call recording app. It also includes a vibration alert after a predefined time. Again, this does need the speaker on during the all to be able to record the full conversation. And as usual availability and usage would be dependent on local laws.

That's definitely a nice list of available headless apps. Have we missed any? Hit us up in the comments. We'll be adding to this for a while so keep coming back as we see the list grow.

A list of headless running apps currently available for BlackBerry 10.2.1

I'm using 3 of them and find they mostly work very well. Hub++ is my most useful. I use it for the obvious alerts but the hidden gem in it is the ability to write email and SMS triggers to take some action.

I use and appreciate SayIt but I don't use it headless.

I just got On Location and wish it did a bit more. I hope future versions add the few little features I feel it's missing. The biggest one is the ability to send a BBM. I try to never use SMS when BBM is an option.

Was all set to get On Location, then I saw it will only SMS and not BBM or email. Very limited functionality. Go to supermarket it can turn change antennas, SMS and/or notification profile, but not open up a Note/Reminder with my shopping list? Almost there, but not quite.

I would love the integration with remember as well. What I'm really waiting for is BHIVE tasks to pick up the slack and put back all its usefulness from BBOS. It had geofencing tasks and was wonderful. Dev won't respond though, even though in the app description he states it's missing features and needs good reviews to continue development. He's got nothing but four and five stars and plenty of requests for the features of old. Anyone else missing BHIVE? Contact the Dev please.

Just downloaded the Phone Call recorder. $1.99 seems reasonable. Hopefully quality is super.

Profile changer has been on my list headless makes my decision wanting it more.

Posted via CB10 on my blazing fast Z30 running 10.2.1.1925

I'm not sure if the BlackBerry API's allow it or not, but what I'd love in a headless app: automatically set my BlackBerry to call forward to the landline when I'm home. The geofencing part isn't a problem, I know, but not sure if an app can change forwarding sections. If so, I'm happy to pay for it.

Search in Blackberry World if its there then your device supports it .Also you require 10.2.1 update to enjoy headless feature

I guess I can answer my own question. I purchased Profile Changer Pro and it looks like it can't turn on/off WiFi. So, I had to purchase On Location to be able to do that.

I still like Profile Changer Pro. It does more stuff than On Location.

OnLocation cannot turn off WifFi.

I have the app and it says "Currently turning WiFi off is not allowed to 3rd party".

Well that's disappointing. I know it turns on the WiFi because I set it up to do that when I left my workplace, where I turn off WiFi. I guess I'll have to still remember to turn it off when I get to work. I hope they update it to be able to do it.

Sadly BlackBerry needs to do this using a firmware update. They currently only allow apps to turn it on. But off is not allowed. Sadly.

There is nothing special about blaq. I hate using 3rd party apps there's always limitations

Posted via CB10 for Z10

Not always. For instance, gReader for Android (which runs without hiccups in 10.2.1) easily surpasses the official Feedly app. It does depend partly on how restrictive the first party is with its API, of course. Twitter's official app will always be ahead of its third party counterparts in functional breadth.

I do agree that, even as a third party app, Blaq isn't yet fully there as a $2.99 app for power users in comparison to what you can get for free with Falcon Pro or Tweecha for Android. One thing Blaq does really have going for it is its aesthetics. The overall design of its UI is, I would say, something special, and I think there's room to tweak it a bit more for power users without compromising what I would argue is its biggest strength.

Hopefully BeBuzz will soon be on the list as well. Loved it on the Legacy devices and I hope to on BB10 as well. I know there are other options, but after a good experience, I'll wait for them to pick up headless support. I know they are working on it.

Posted via CB10 via the power of " Q "

I'm not surprised. I'm waiting for BellShare to make the update then ask me to purchase it again... Having bought a few of their products before, they're probably working on making the feature an in-app purchase.

They better not because in the app description it says that it will be a free update when they get it done.

Posted via CB10 via the power of " Q "

How is the say it app headless? If you have physically press something to activate the app that wouldn't be a headless app. Or maybe I'm wrong on the definition of a headless app.

Being headless means you don't have to first open up the app in order to then press the record button to give your instruction, instead, it can be closed and you can just use the media keys.

Does anyone have suggestions on the best phone call recorder - preferably one that does not require use of the speaker? I just noticed today there a few options available.

Not so perfect for me; it failed to recognise my Bluetooth profile in its geofencing component. I might be doing something wrong but I tested it, having followed the instructions in good faith. Nada. Bluetooth still on half a mile from home. Will drop email to support.

Posted by the inimitable Z10 handheld system

In Blaq, I don't see any toggle for background running in the settings. Is headless on by default?

ZZwiped up on my Z10!

Thx DJ! As it turns out I did have it on. Just didn't know that toggle was I'm the permissions.

ZZwiped up on my Z10!

I'm using so far FlipShush, BaSA, Power Tools, ClipMan, Blaq and Wallpaper Changer.

All 6 apps are working very well together but ClipMan is the most genius app I ever used! Extremely simple concept but it changed the way I use my whole device. And I find every day a new useful usecase.
I'm composing in the meantime all kind of SMS and BBM messaged within this App. It extends all kind of apps on my device in a extreme useful way and saved my day already countless times. Kudos to the developer. Most useful upgrade for my Q10!

Thanks for this list DJ! I was thinking I needed to dig thru old reviews for apps I was interested in when they went headless.
As already requested, can you keep this updated with dated entries so we only need to go thru the most recent? Thanks.
Another great article might be a list of apps only working on 2.1.1. Several times recently I have gone to buy an app after reading a review then discovered I couldn't until an update. I still consider it an absolute miracle Verizon rolled out the update, and feel for those that do not have it. So updating would help current and future users.
I know these lists are time consuming & really do appreciate it!

Posted via CB10 with "Z" best

Yeah I am formally submitting a Stickie Request. Sounds a bit dubious but go with it please.

Posted by the inimitable Z10 handheld system

So many great sounding apps, so little time! (Not to mention memory space.) Seriously, no one with a BB10 phone and seeking productivity apps should complain about an app gap.

Posted by the inimitable Z10 handheld system

I think fire chest data very well may be headless. May want to contact the Dev to make sure tho

Posted via single-finger-flickin fun on the best damn virtual keyboard in existence....The BlackBerry Z30 Everybody!

Hi, I'm the developer of BaSA and ClipMan.

It is not especially a Data Monitor but you could use BaSA for this usecase despite the fact it is not created especially for this usecase. But you have in comparsion to a normal Data Monitor always to select manually the timeframe you're interested in and the calculation needs a few seconds if you let it calculate the usage for a whole month. But in comparsion to a simple data monitor it let you know with up to 10 seconds resolution how much data you have used in a certain timeframe. (At example while watching a YouTube video) - But take the results always with care. It is explained in detail why a Data Monitor fails in the most cases if it is about billing and data traffic usage. Your provider has it's own rules.

Only available for T-Mobile and Congstar users in Germany. At other providers or regions this doesn't work. Sadly. It provides so far the most accurate solution and runs also headless.

I keep hoping ShaoSoft gets their Wallpaper Changer HD app to go headless. I like how it will display weather and battery information across the top.

Power Tools looks like an interesting app. I'll have to check that out. It might make up for the Z10 not having a holster mode.

Posted via the Android CrackBerry App!

I use watcher and the Dev is beyond quick in addressing problems, very happy.

I had to remember when changing my profile (was at the dentist) to silent had to do it from watcher app and NOT settings

If there is anything I would like to see is fully integrated choice of clocks meaning bedside mode, alarms would work too

Digicel Jamaica Official10.2.1.1925 release

Toysoft team has done a very good job here, i'll go & purchase the Profile Changer soon! seems that's interesting one and I need it at most rather than switching profiles back & forth everytime I enter the office..

Is there something that one needs to do to run headless? Or do you just close the application?

Posted via CB10

Hmm, if that's the key permission, that means the headless protocol ( for want of a better term) doesn’t need 10.2.1 to work. I do not have 10.2.1, but I have noticed some apps I have installed can be granted said permission. Go figure.

Posted by the inimitable Z10 handheld system

Scrub that, I was unintentionally lying. What I mistook for a permission setting was actually an in-app setting. E.g. 'update in background' as per CB10.

Posted by the inimitable Z10 handheld system

I would like one of my data apps to become headless ,Fire Chest Usage or Data Monitor.

Posted from my Z30 via the CB app

You forgot the mileage tracker, TrakUrMiles! It just came out with automatic bluetooth gps tracking using a headless application.

Posted via CB10

Now that device monitor is there in 10.2.1, I'd be much more comfortable trying out headless apps so I can see which app is eating up my Z10's already mediocre battery.

Posted via CB10

I guess finishing the device monitor was one of the reasons why we had to wait for the 10.2.1 firmware to get headless apps to our devices.

True and I hadn't noticed your avatar before. But now you draw my attention to it, yeah it's pretty nuts too, in a good way!

Just downloaded 'on location '. Been looking for an app to turn wife on /off like the old 'smart wifi'.

Posted via CB10

At the moment, BlackBerry does not allow 3rd party apps to turn WiFi off. That's why OnLocation only allows turning WiFi on when entering or leaving location. It does support turning Bluetooth off and on as well as changing profile (Normal, Vibrate Only, Silent, Phone Calls Only, All alerts off). In addition you can configure sending emails or/and sms upon arrival or leaving. Contacts to notify and text of the messages can be configured for each location.

Yeah a little disappointed in that. I purchased this app specifically for that feature and its not available. Should make this a little clearer in the description. It is a nice looking app and has nice integration. Hopefully this feature will be available soon.

Also looking for an app to turn my wife on.

One thing which comes to mind with the advent of this latest significant update to BlackBerry 10, but also in terms of the OS in general: the gap between what bbos 7 (legacy) did by default and what bb10 was capable of at least on its first iterations (and still to an extent now, even after the latest software update) was so great that I often wondered whether BlackBerry had deliberately left features off with the intention of encouraging developers to create apps which would fill those gaps. A risky strategy (in terms of the end user) but one which has arguably been a success in getting devs on board. Possibly because these developers realise there are functional needs which are not being met by the OS but which can be fixed profitably, with readily available API. Maybe too far fetched a supposition. But I did wonder...

Posted by the inimitable Z10 handheld system

Good thought, but ouch, that would hurt. Hate to play app-puzzle to get a feature-complete phone.

Maybe another way of getting people on board is to provide a feature complete phone, in the style of:

"We do not need that many apps. Our phones have it all built-in. So grab one today and keep moving".

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

More than half the posts on Crackberry.com are useless for me until I get the 10.2 update from T-mo US. No, I am not interested in breaking my WiFi calling by installing the leak.

Power Clock (in background it monitors when the device is plugged in and delivers an instant preview to launch Power Clock)

Phone Recorder(works in background to record phone calls)

It would have been nice if the writer of this article mentioned that we have to pay for these apps rather than having us click every link to find out so...
