Leaked: OS 5.0.0.895 for the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550

Wow, been a while since we seen an OS leak for the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550. I'm sure those of you out there still making use of the device will be happy to see it. No idea what this OS brings to the table so, be sure to make a backup before you load it just in case things go bad.
*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

"I'm sure those of you out there still making use of the device will be happy to see it."
Haha. I know there are bigger and better blackberrys in the world.... but the "still making use of" part just cracks me UP!!!!
AjStone Oct 11, 2010 at 12:00 am
It actually particularly angers me.
victoriak68 Oct 11, 2010 at 1:38 am
As a Storm2 owner, it angers me a bit as well. The Storm2 isn't anywhere near obsolete. I know of many people right here where I live that own one and love it.
Salomon Oct 11, 2010 at 3:02 am
i agree ... this is a very good blackberry
Mario_Brewed_For_Thought Oct 11, 2010 at 11:34 am
Anyone who was a former Storm 2 owner that's currently using it as a paperweight interested in parting with their 9550?
luikid16 Oct 10, 2010 at 11:09 pm
weres the 9700 leak ? :( come on its 10/10/10... i wish for the leak lol
MILLYBLICK Oct 11, 2010 at 12:19 pm
Two more weeks or so... lets all be patient.
AjStone Oct 10, 2010 at 11:14 pm
Finally I get to reload my phone. I'm looking forward to it.
ffac789 Oct 10, 2010 at 11:26 pm
On it! See you guys on the other side!
RHChan84 Oct 10, 2010 at 11:42 pm
Finally, about time this came out. Will have to upload it later on tonight. :( can't do it now...
arist01 Oct 10, 2010 at 11:56 pm
Tomorrow night will be the earliest I can do the upgrade. Looking forward to first impressions from early adopters, particularly:
Phone module
It sucks on .713, so bad that I've been looking to downgrade back to .607. That digital echo is driving me nuts.
SMS Bug
Wonder if the keyboard bug in the SMS function is gone?
Browser
Nevermind, if it's not webkit it doesn't matter.
Official OS Apps
MobileBanking and DirecTV claim to only work on official OS versions. Anyone use them on .895?
I'll post my notes once I upgrade and check out any changes.
Might be the last OS upgrade we see on 9550.
chuckh0308 Oct 11, 2010 at 12:15 am
What is the SMS keyboard bug? I'm just finalizing the install, but I never noticed anything wrong with SMS in the .713.
arist01 Oct 11, 2010 at 12:22 am
Quote below is from one of the forums. This is an intermittent bug that I see on occasion.
Sometimes when you click in the text window to type a message, the menu screen comes up at the same time as the keyboard.
chuckh0308 Oct 11, 2010 at 12:27 am
OK, thanks! I send quite a few texts and I've never encountered that (or I thought I did something...lol!). I probably won't give any reports until tomorrow, but I will definitely check for that. In related news, someone posted int he forums that we can now send long texts over 160 characters and it will divide them up. I hope that's true!
dewnay67 Oct 11, 2010 at 12:16 am
Anyone has a forum link on how to install the new OS with the new BBdesktop software? Use to be install the new OS and load up BBdesktop and it was auto from there.
No more of a need to delete vendor file etc? Thanks!~
chuckh0308 Oct 11, 2010 at 12:28 am
FWIW, DM6 crashed when I tried to install that way. Everything worked fine using AppLoader via BBSAK though.

Wow, I'm shocked I'm seeing another leaked OS for my phone. I thought they'd be done for... Where could i go to see updates on how people are liking the leak? Just come back here later or check the forums?

Findings and fixes

mcfisher1980 Oct 11, 2010 at 2:05 am
this seems ok. boot time seems to be a tad bit faster. other than that, i really havent noticed anything thats going to make me jump for joy.
youngjei Oct 11, 2010 at 5:59 am
i downloaded the latest link and started updating my bb. and then at the midle of installation i got a message saying it cant connect to JVM. from there my phone didnt boot up. i disconnected my device.
pterok Oct 11, 2010 at 10:26 am
I got the same problem and now my phone will not even turn on. Just hourglass and red led. Hourglass and then red led. UGH!
How do i fix? I tried connecting to bbsak but it never starts long enough to recognize. Help.
bobalooski Oct 11, 2010 at 9:31 am
Installed and got robo phone real bad. Never had it before with any other OS. Dropped back to .713 for now.
ba_hamilton Oct 11, 2010 at 9:57 am
Installed it last night. Honestly, .713 worked fine on my phone. Can't tell much difference in this version. Reboot time took 6 minutes vs. 8 or 9 before. I forgot what a PITA it is to download and re-register all my apps. Too early to tell about battery life and signal strength yet.
Transitions seem vary fast. Accelo-thingy (going from landscape to portrait) is very quick.
If you are happy with what you have right now, I would say skip this one.
dbaci3 Oct 11, 2010 at 9:52 am
Yes it is confirmed! Now you can send long SMS messages. If you go past 160 Characters it will automatically divide it into new pages up to a total of 6! :)
IrishHurricane Oct 11, 2010 at 1:54 pm
can anyone confirm this?
Robert Calhoun Oct 11, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Confirmed! WOOT!
lazydogrex Oct 11, 2010 at 10:14 am
Ever since I upgraded to .713, occasionally when I use speeddial or contact dialing, there's no audio. The screen shows "dialing", "connected", but I can't hear anything. Anyone else have this problem with the .713 upgrade, and if so, does the .895 leak address this issue?
Techno-Emigre Oct 11, 2010 at 10:36 am
Speed dial is a problem for me w/ .713 as well. Plus sometimes the number pad comes up and sometimes not. Anyone seeing better functionality? Also had problems locking my phone. Think it is the OS or tired phone? I really want this phone to last until I know what they are doing about the next Storm as I love it.
arist01 Oct 11, 2010 at 10:50 am
I too have encountered those problems. Holding a speed-dial down shows connected but it didn't actually dial. I know when it works only when I hear the DTMF tones...no tones means it didn't dial and I have to start over.
I think it's .713, never had that problem with .607. I'm going to try this one and see, although a post above says the ditial noise with the phone module is still around.
DTritcakDST Oct 11, 2010 at 11:35 am
Rebooting device now its finished installing, I'm actually excited I a performance boost and by all the good comments in the Findings and fixes the update will surely be good:)
juju705 Oct 11, 2010 at 11:55 am
"I'm sure those of you out there still making use of the device will be happy to see it."
Rude.
Storm 2 may have been effed over when it comes to OS 6, but it's still a decent device and nowhere near obsolete.
Kryngle Oct 11, 2010 at 12:02 pm
Sweeeeet. Finally got a new leak. See y'all 8 months from now when we get another leak LMAO
GabrielEF#AC Oct 11, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Downloaded and installed last night. It had a hiccup saving/loading 3rd party apps, but the phone loaded everything else fine. A few of my apps work now, as before they were useless (BBMaps not downloading maps, UrbanSpoon not connecting) but all is well. Need to put all my apps back to see how fast it really is. No complaints though...
almuazin16 Oct 11, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Installed it last night, and havnt really noticed a difference in the overall processing speed. I did notice that we can now send long txts now! YAY us! Able to send up to 6 pages of 160 characters. I also noticed that the startup screen status bar is a little bit nor streamlined. SMS keyboard bug is gone, and hasn't been locking up on me as often as before. Go blackberry leaks!
arist01 Oct 11, 2010 at 2:00 pm
The robot/digital echo on the phone module is unbearable. It was present on .713 but only on occasion. I've made several test calls...all performed the same.
I am downgrading to .607 which I think is more stable than .713. Too bad, I was liking the extended SMS function and slightly faster boot speed.
Can anyone recommend a hybrid?
scungi Oct 11, 2010 at 2:51 pm
Same here with the digital echo, cant use the phone at all for calls...........going back to .713..............had issues but nothing too unbearable..........they really need to get there stuff together
PossumPete Oct 11, 2010 at 3:01 pm
This loaded BBM automatically. I don't want that crap. It's in the Core Functions and can't be deleted. How can I get rid of this?
Sanch0 Oct 11, 2010 at 3:45 pm
@PossumPete: Use Shrink-A-OS to remove BBM. Usually comes with Lyricidal hybrids. Google Shrink-A-OS to find the program.
PossumPete Oct 11, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Thanks for the tip! I usually only use that for loading hybrids. Now I know better.
RedBank Oct 12, 2010 at 7:21 am
Its actually BBHybridTool now...and is better than ever now.
I loaded this OS with zero hiccups...but my phone is no longer active so i cant comment on call quality. the sms split feature is nice though
Kryngle Oct 11, 2010 at 3:42 pm
I would like to know why everybody else got the upgraded 160 character from the 140 and Im still stuck with 140 characters??? I have also noticed that my phone did a serious of reboots and it finally worked but all of my apps are gone even after backin up files. Dunno what's goin on here.
crush29830 Oct 11, 2010 at 3:46 pm
It was really easy to upload, I dont really see any difference between it and .713
I am just glad that RIM does recognize there are still Storm II owners out here who really do like this device.
DTritcakDST Oct 11, 2010 at 4:45 pm
The browser is a year faster!
imsorowdy08 Oct 11, 2010 at 6:05 pm
i have noticed if you send a text to someone with non smartphone that is 160 characters that they will not receive it!
Gimmily Oct 11, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Better be worth it on my bold 9700 and im dying to go back to my storm 2 :'( its a shame that the 9700 still hasnt gotten a leak for os 6 its starting to piss me off peace hommies ^^
uflac1105 Oct 11, 2010 at 9:12 pm
Loaded this up on my storm. Everything seems to be working real good. Surepress seems to be Snappy, faster browser. Only bad thing is the robotic voice is worse than it was on .713
Time_wazter Oct 11, 2010 at 7:56 pm
just loaded .895.
noticed i have pinch to zoom now.
also that loading is a bit quicker.
lhsbound06 Oct 11, 2010 at 11:17 pm
Does anyone else notice that with this new operating system it gives you 6 pages of texts to work with. As opposed to the old only 160 characters per text, I noticed earlier it said 160 1/6, which for sure is the best thing to ever happen to my phone considering I text alot. However, I did notice that this operating system has some sort of horrible buzzing noise during phone calls. Damn, we can't just have a perfect operating system!!!!
deputydog2003 Dec 1, 2010 at 12:11 pm
I had the same buzzing noise problem when I upgraded to 5.0.0.713. The only fix was to roll back to 5.0.0.607.
Did you resolve your issue? I heard that there is an even newer operating system that just came out. Do you know if this is meant to resolve the buzzing sound?
Chris money Oct 12, 2010 at 1:21 am
Keep 607 and use crunch SMS. Nuff said.
R_Zee Oct 12, 2010 at 2:35 am
I was so excited with this OS.
But the robotic voice makes me crazy!!
Mismutek Oct 12, 2010 at 3:12 am
I'm still annoyed that even though they changed the emoticons the Straight Face still shows they Whew picture and Whew shows Straight Face
Robert Calhoun Oct 12, 2010 at 7:53 am
I sent a couple of over 160 character texts to the ex-wife who is on a Droid... It came out garbled.
kylewalker Oct 12, 2010 at 9:56 am
The bar at the bottom of the phone log is back!
crush29830 Oct 12, 2010 at 12:47 pm
"noticed i have pinch to zoom now.
also that loading is a bit quicker."
Are you serious or just wanting to get people started?
imsorowdy08 Oct 12, 2010 at 9:21 pm
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
cornflakeboi1234 Oct 12, 2010 at 10:13 pm
I cannot hear anyone on phone calls. Going back to previous version.
Jai Manny Oct 19, 2010 at 10:45 am
this is a bad leak version. so many good things yet so many bad things.
i reverted back to .713 with Mark.Hayes0338 v2.4 hybrid.
Phone is awesome again.
