Leaked: OS 5.0.0.841 for the BlackBerry Storm 9500

Something for all you BlackBerry Storm 9500 owners out there. Driphter.com has posted up OS 5.0.0.841. This has been one of few leaks to filter out for the BlackBerry Storm 9500 so finally nice to see something arrive. You all know the drill, standard disclaimer applies. Take note, this version is slimmed down and lacks some of what would normally be included with an OS ie: BlackBerry App World, some preloaded files etc. Keep that in mind as you may have to re-download a few apps you'd expect to be preloaded.
*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

That someone is nice enough to give the curve 8330 one last leak too, at least its users will be appreciative :P

Seriously, why bother?
misnreg Aug 2, 2010 at 8:12 pm
Yeah why bother.....Storm 2 wont see the new OS6 so I about had it with this blackberry. So sucks for us who just cant get up and spend a few hundred dollars on a brand new phone. Android here i come.
bradbogy Aug 2, 2010 at 9:52 pm
You can't spend money on a new phone yet you are going to Android and spending the same money.. wtf kind of logic is that?
Big deal if the S2 doesn't see OS6. It's part of the progression of technology get used to it.

It never makes sense to me when people complain about stuff like this. I own a Storm 9550, I bought it brand new at the end of February. Sure, I am a little disappointed that it won't run 6.0, but I am still happy with it, and I am still likely going to purchase a Blackberry next year for the same reasons I bought this one.
Also if I can remember correctly when Android 2.1 came out there were a lot of devices that were not supported, and were never going to be supported. It is not like this is a RIM only thing. Due to the long stagnation of the market there is huge growth potential, which means as you buy a phone, a month from later a better one will be out, no matter who you buy it from.

Oh boy 3 months back got my sis a 9500 and she loved it. Had .484 on it, finally did a 'brid of it. Let's hope there's still fun in thinkering this device.

Anyone actually try this yet?

I also own a storm 2 and I'm more than likely going to stay with blackberry. My why bother comment was directed at the Storm 1. Even RIM knows it was flop and no amount of software will make that beast any better. Kill it already.
brainZ Aug 3, 2010 at 8:23 am
If you own Storm 2, why do you care whether Storm 1 will be killed or supported in the future? Mind your own business, mate.

WHAT!?STORM 2 WONT RUN OS 6!?IS IT POSSITIVE?F*^K I BOUGHT THIS SHIT ONLY FOR THAT!

can i use this update on my 9530?
keith7120 Aug 3, 2010 at 10:20 am
I once had the Storm 1.. That device was horrible. I have the right to my opinion because I actually owned one.

Your opinion will change. I hope

I upgraded to 713 when it came out back in June for my 9550 and it sucked overall. There were so many bugs in that version. While the GUI was far more fluid and typing flowed much better than before, the nagging audio problem on voice calls made me want to slam the phone against the wall. After a few weeks, I backed out and downgraded back to 607--much more stable and audio issues gone. So, I'm definitely eager to find out how well 841 is working for folks.
I understand the complaints about OS6 not running on the Storm 2. When you buy a device you expect to at least have updates available for a year. Sure, yeah, technology needs to keep moving along, but for something to become obsolete in a year is a little ridiculous for the money and contracts we're signing up for. There needs to be some balance here. Hell, at least give us folks who bought a phone in the past 6 months a discount or something to upgrade to newer hardware.

It will continue to get updates, just not the one you want.
IrishHurricane Aug 3, 2010 at 11:14 am

I upgraded my Storm to OS 5.0.0.841 from the earlier mentioned link by ckeins - http://www.vodafone.de/business/blackberry-support/
blackberry-storm-9500.html
few quick updates:
- feels very smooth, almost flawless
- Improved keyboard
- better memory usage
I did not get a chance to explore anything more as yet. will post more as we progress.
I know there are few Storm 1 users left but with regular upgrades since .484 onwards the device was as good as other and with the new one it will even feel better. Just upgrade it if you haven't.
Cheers

Guys,
today (07/08/2010) I have encountered two bugs:
- received a call and on ending the call, the speaker activated and made engaged type sound.
- Then I tried to browse but the alert message came that you have an active call and the request can't be performed at this time. same thing happend to my face book client too.
- I did a battery pull and it came back to normal
Did any of you encountered this, Is there any fix, please let me know.
Cheers
