Leaked OS: 5.0.0.681 For The BlackBerry Bold 9000
By
Bla1ze on 16 May 2010 01:17 pm
If you're still rocking a BlackBerry Bold 9000 you get the pleasure of updating your OS today. OS 5.0.0.681 has just showed up in quite a few places. Of course, it's not an official OS so you'll want to make sure you back your data up before loading this one, should things go wrong.
*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Why does the article start with 'if you're still rocking a bold 9000...'? Seems like people are trying to big up the bold 9700 for the stuff they added and ignore the stuff they neglected like the size and feel of the 9000. Like an old posting, there's a whole load of people that believed the proper upgrade to the bold series was to put in the new goodies in the 9000 body. I like my 9000 series, just wish there were good stuff in it :p

Gained 2.5 MB of Memory.. and well... I guess the performance has gotten better? haha
I love when these leaks come out and there is nothing new to report... I haven't gone deep into the menus, but i will; be doing that shortly!
AH!
SHIT!
Word mole and brickbreaker... they have gone... need to get those back. now.
No wonder i gained memory! haha
josearnulfo May 16, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Dowmlanding ... I hope gaun memory and better performance
tourjet May 16, 2010 at 2:26 pm
Does this work on a Tour 9630??
NightShade00013 May 16, 2010 at 2:52 pm
No
kllaus May 16, 2010 at 2:31 pm
Very slow booting
xBBGirlx May 16, 2010 at 2:49 pm
Upgraded from .610.
28mb to 34.4mb! nothing out of sorts so far. had to re install app world. no problems logging into the bb twitter client like previous leaks. so far so good..we'll see how the battery holds up.
CarlSandbag May 16, 2010 at 3:36 pm
Looks great. Memory went up to 300mg free. Phone is spitting out $20 bills. No charge for any apps. Miley Cyrus home phone was placed in contact list. Lady Gaga too. Web cam installed in Larry King's bedroom. Now THIS is an upgrade!!!
Madness87 May 16, 2010 at 3:46 pm
Nearly everyone where I go to school or work are still rocking Bold 9000's or Curve 8900's. It's only been 1 and half years since it came out. There is nothing the Bold 9700 does that it cannot do. My trackball is still working great and I love the bigger keyboards/screen.
My bold is going to keep me occupied until at least the next generation of OS 6.0 devices.
Jerky223 May 16, 2010 at 6:09 pm
I've had mine for a year and 6 months, the longest of any phone I've kept.
There was a poll here last week and I think the majority of people like the 9000 size but want the usual improvements (newer screen, trackpad, more memory, etc.).
I really wish there was away to convert the 896MB on-board memory to application memory (1024MB - 128MB application memory). I have an 8GB card and don't use the on-board.
Madness87 May 17, 2010 at 12:53 am
Wait till the Bold 9650 and Pearl 9100 3G and Bold 9800 or Bold clamshell come and people will start complaining wishing their Tour 9630's or Bold 9700's had the newer features.
Bold 9650 = 512 MB App Memory
Pearl 9100 3G = First BlackBerry with Wireless-N Wifi
Bold 9800 = higher res touch screen
Bold Clamshell = 5 megapixel camera
While I would love to have at least 512 mb app memory, a higher res screen and trackpad, I'm happy with what the bold 9000 has right now.
lachmi May 16, 2010 at 3:48 pm
.610 was really piece of shit. I hope this leak will be much better because I had to downgrade to 545, which is the most stable OS leak in last few months....
Finch250 May 16, 2010 at 8:12 pm
musta had a yucky bold =P .610 was so stable and barely any mem leaks
lachmi May 17, 2010 at 5:30 am
Good for you :-) Me and my five friends had same problem as me. Mostly with memory leaks..
Matt J May 16, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Just upgraded from .610 to .681. No differences noticed so far. Memory about the same. Will report back tomorrow.
Matt J May 16, 2010 at 4:11 pm
oh... and .610 was an amazing build for me (except for very slow, but sure, memory leak)... if .681 helps with that, I will be very happy.
jamesshami May 18, 2010 at 10:48 am
Any news on the differences between .610 vs .681?? Battery, memory leaks, App mem?
Justino21 May 16, 2010 at 4:21 pm
I Had a problem with .610 that whenever my battery got low like 20-25 percent my phone would shut down while I was working on it. Let's hope .681 fixes that for me
sweetlittlehugs May 16, 2010 at 4:40 pm
Uhg I have that problem too
yomandenver May 16, 2010 at 8:30 pm
Anyone know if the autolock app is disabled in this build, too? I had to revert to .238 when I found out that autolock was disabled.
nimocone#cb May 16, 2010 at 8:52 pm
I'm happy these are posted, but are they really leaks? I see videos on this site taken down in a nanosecond but never these "leaks".
yomandenver May 16, 2010 at 10:31 pm
If you were wondering if AutoLock, or any other third-party apps would be disabled with this build, they still are.
gregmcmillan May 16, 2010 at 10:33 pm
I just went from .610 to .681. To date, .610 was by far the best OS my 9000 has ever seen, till now. Every version of 5.0 I've tried failed to show the icons for Docs 2 Go in their true form. This new leak shows the icons as they did in the original 4.6. Beyond that, I installed the new OS leaving all my apps, settings and files in check and I still have 21 MB of free memory. That's stellar for the 9000 in my opinion.
One other thing I like about .681 is, as in .610, the mute button locks the keypad. The new leak still has the Lock icon on the home screen but .610 did not.
So, to sum it all up, if I can have twelve applications on top of the Docs 2 Go premium app and still have 21 MB of free memory that takes forever to trickle down, .681 is one awesome update.
lachmi May 17, 2010 at 5:56 am
Heh, .610 was my worst OS leak (my 5 friens have same feeling)
vulfadli May 17, 2010 at 8:09 am
you mean that u upgraded to 681 on top of 610 without wipe?
And it still gives you all of the above? That's awesome I'm gonna try it tonight then. I gotta say backup then clean wipe then upgrade is the best way to get 'real' results rather than upgrading on top of current ver then complaints. Hmm. Sounds like a steady built.

Have been running AE's .662 hybrid for few days now & really happy so far. Will try .681 out and report back shortly... :)

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate that I can help out a bit. . . if I got the files or notice there of right away I would get them posted faster. And one of the best ways you can help me out is if you are going to buy something online anyway from one of my advertisers click the link on my page before doing your order. Most of them pay about 1% so it's not much but can be used multiple times. I use the newegg one a ton myself, gives me free shipping basically, LOL.
BTW it takes me about 20 mins to download the file and another 60 to upload, so if a file does come out I will try to get it online asap but I don't always catch them and it will take me at least an hour and a half to get it up and running.
i8bal May 17, 2010 at 11:50 am
"Still rocking?" - You seem to suggest that the 9000 isn't one of the most advanced phones out there. It still beats the whole BB line, unless you want the small improvements (and smaller keyboard and screen) of of the 9700.
greggag May 17, 2010 at 12:10 pm
Can you explain to me the difference on how to do these. Last time I followed the tutorial on this site. currently running 5.0.0.464

I just downloaded this, and it was oddly enough my first crack at 5.0 on my bold. The only problems i have encountered so far are that 1. it wont let me delete voice mails in the visual voice mail. Or rather, it lets me click "delete" but then that voice mail just doesn't go away. and, 2. I when i went in a told the "messages" icon to only show my emails, it ignored me and continues to show bbm's, sms messages, etc. when i click that icon. Other than that, great. If anyone else is having these problems or found a way around them, let me know. Thanks.
sweetlittlehugs May 17, 2010 at 5:09 pm
On the last 2 leaks I've had trouble keeping wifi connected. The wifi symbol kept greying out, on .681 however my wifi seems to be holding strong.
SpoiledRottenAppleGuy May 17, 2010 at 6:52 pm
Are there any differences from 5.0.0.610?
eduardo.objio May 17, 2010 at 8:34 pm
it leaks like crazy! not worth the d/l
captain_tinker May 17, 2010 at 9:45 pm
Yeah, I installed fresh this afternoon, after a reboot, it was on 24 mb free, not touching it for several hours, it's now at 17 mb free. Where did the 7 mb go? Seriously, that doesn't make sense. I've not noticed anything better or worse yet from 610. At least there aren't any NEW problems that I've seen.
jfs101 May 18, 2010 at 9:38 am
Did you do this in the name of science??? heck, I can't go 10 minutes without fiddling around with my BB!!!
Csgmarc May 17, 2010 at 8:53 pm
610 was so bad, I had to go back to 509 to get wifi and unit stability back. Can anyone report on the unit stability and wifi (and not just state you're downloading and will test...) Thank you.
greenii May 17, 2010 at 11:04 pm
Installed this afternoon on Bold 9000 - after wiping Willyboy's .662 Hybrid. Until the .681 leak, I have NEVER started my Bold with memory of more than 28-29MB. However, after installing the .681 - I started with 39MB!!
Been checking memory after opening apps and closing - before, it would drop 2-7MB. Didn't happen once I installed the .681! Is this the fix I was looking for?? I hope so!
Checked later in the evening, after a battery pull - Still seems to take about 4-5 minutes to start-up completely. 38.9MB...HOWEVER - Battery drops 10-15%!!! Prior OS's only dropped about 5%.
Flipped thru the various menu's, options, settings, etc., and nothing jumps out as "different".
So - short review - For me...Seems to be about 10MB more, but alot more battery loss when a battery pull is done.
BBBAbuser May 18, 2010 at 2:55 am
Thanks a lot greenii! I have some memory leak issues with OS 5 and was hoping .681 would solve the problem... Pls report more after few days? Many thanks.....

nope the megaupload just worked
:)
minasoprano1 May 19, 2010 at 8:31 am
i downloaded this, and so far so good. the only thing thats messing up is app world, and i think that's because of internet issues, everything else is awesomeeeeeeeeee!!!
and "still" rocking a bold 9000? the bold 9000 is one of the best blackberry phones out there, the 9700 sucks, it's way too small and I just hate it. the bold 9000 is perfect, has the trackball, a nice big screen, awesome keyboard, etc.

Does Wireless Audio Streaming through Bluetooth work with this version?
gnm313 May 20, 2010 at 9:37 pm

No, it's still not an option yet!
Maloy May 20, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Dowloaded and installed. No issues in operations. Noted some improvement in speed and additional memory. Free memory running about 24 mb. Before 0.681 installed, memory stayed in 8-10 mb range. Third party apps working without problems. Very satisfied. On AT&T, who is making an art to staying behind.

Is this update leaking memory like crazy or is it just me??
By 24hours I'm getting a loss of about 12-15MB. Can anyone report their findings and confirm?

@ NightShade00013, thank you for the link!

Since updating to the latest version, everything is fantastic.
With a few downside;
- speaker volume is low
- my contacts name doesn't shows up during incoming calls
- I can't access all of my txt messages
- camera view is a grainy, even in a well lit area
- have 4 applications with the same planet earth icon
Other than that, I'm content with my Bold 9000!!!
