Bla1ze on 5 May 2010 12:50 pm
Alright, BlackBerry 9700 owners. It's your turn, here is the leaked OS 5.0.0.656 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700. As it was posted in the CrackBerry forums earlier today, you can check that thread out and share your thoughts on it. As always be sure to back up your data before you load this release up folks.
*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

KaneHusky May 5, 2010 at 2:11 pm
T-Mobile's official update on May 11th is 5.0.0.586
mi_canuck May 6, 2010 at 2:38 pm
who cares, .586 is already out of date by a couple revisions... LOL
veii May 5, 2010 at 1:01 pm

AnneO May 5, 2010 at 1:58 pm
ok, what else do you have for us?????
amirnabilkamelsaad May 5, 2010 at 2:02 pm
Since you are one of the first to install, mind if I ask you a couple of questions to help us all out?
1- Restart time, is it under 5 mins or still hovering around 10 mins?
2- Apps you are running normally and what's not working if any.
3- Pictures, do they load quickly or is there a noticeable lag?
4- Any unusual restarts?
5- Down the road, how about dropped calls? I've been nagged a lot the past few weeks from that problem..
Any/all answers would be very helpful. Enjoy your new OS pal.
mi_canuck May 5, 2010 at 2:53 pm
1) restart still only about 2min... same as when i had .593
2) berryweather, meterberry, FB, UT, google maps, flixster, google voice, bloomberg... that's about it... nothing much
3)seem to load fine... maybe a bit faster
4) zero restarts so far (never had much with .593 either... this 9700 is solid)
5) no idea yet obviously... but i've never had an issue with .593 so i'm not expecting any with this... i have excellent 3G in my area and UMA works flawlessly for me...
amirnabilkamelsaad May 5, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Thanks a lot for your input...just installed it too
mi_canuck May 5, 2010 at 4:38 pm

nkauchak May 5, 2010 at 2:32 pm
only running since this morning, had .593 before this, but this one is very problematic thus far.
already had to reboot (which takes tediously long) 3 times from freeze-ups.
don't have time to rollback now, but if you're on .593, I suggest staying. haven't noticed any monumental changes and certainly buggy.
ricotjioe29 May 5, 2010 at 2:46 pm
don't upgarde wait may 11 until official. booting so long, 15minute restart...... no good
mi_canuck May 5, 2010 at 2:47 pm
no freezes or battery pulls yet here... not noticing any bugs thus far, except a bit of contact sync issues that I'm not even sure are related to the update... i think from the apploader backup process things got screwed in my contacts, and it's fairly minor... only a couple of 'em...
mi_canuck May 5, 2010 at 2:48 pm
booting takes no longer compared to .593 for me.... takes about 2min or so still with .656... same
rrbela May 5, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Can I do this OTA?
ianig9 May 5, 2010 at 5:04 pm
No, I'm afraid not. Only from computer via USB.
bry1377 May 5, 2010 at 3:17 pm
What are the chances that on May 11th TMO will release OS 6 for 9700??? Not pretty good :(
ronnymes May 5, 2010 at 3:31 pm
Flashed it, and using it now for a few hours but it's feels faster than .593
But not much of a big different, it's a keeper for me.
Unless the battery drains faster, but think it's draining the same as .593
msweet#CB May 5, 2010 at 3:36 pm
does 3G wireless location work on this release?
sweeterman85 May 5, 2010 at 4:46 pm
No problems yet, all my apps work, got a memory boost, and reboot time seems the same.
vod332 May 5, 2010 at 5:17 pm
1. As stated in this thread already, the release by TMO on May 11th, is .586.
2. The 9700 will not be receiving a full version of OS6 because it doesn't have the RAM for it. 512 needed and 9700 only has 256. Rumors of a version of OS6 without some key features may be possible for 9700.
3. Don't expect to see OS6 until late in the year. I wouldn't even start thinking about official versions from carriers until October/November, if not later.
samsnz May 5, 2010 at 7:17 pm
Where did you get this information seeing as OS 6 was demonstrated on a 9700? I have not seen ANY hard numbers for hardware requirements; just speculation.
cyndiy777 May 5, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Everything running faster
foursquare good
facebook good
weatherbug good
socialscope good
poynt good
wifi good
slacker radio good
Vlingo good
Enjoy everyone Cyndi

Twitter for BlackBerry® is not loading on 9700/5.0.0.656. Any success and/or advice?
parmijo11 May 5, 2010 at 6:19 pm
I've tried on WIFI, 3G, and EDGE. No dice...
darkstar954 May 5, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Its not the OS, its the app it self, mines was having issue, and once I log out, I'm unable to sign back in.
robarias May 6, 2010 at 12:22 am
Weird, i did a roll back on my 9700 and it does not connect either
parmijo11 May 5, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Just tried sim and battery pull, issue persists. Damn.
carlosg2002 May 5, 2010 at 6:48 pm
has anyone figured out how to fix the twitter app. and also when u place a call is the "my number" 555-555-5555 is it complete of chopped off?
parmijo11 May 5, 2010 at 6:53 pm
Mine shows my number except last two digits. Good find.
carlosg2002 May 5, 2010 at 7:00 pm
yea i am not updating it then i hate that problem it happened before with some other builds its annoying. what else did u find?
berryfreak310 May 5, 2010 at 8:26 pm
The T-Mobile My Account app does not work with this build.
However, Shazam does work on this build.
Could not locate the Blackberry App world icon after installing the OS, even though the app showed up in the "Add-On" application list. Had to download again to get the icon to appear.
Font size of 3G/EDGE/UMA is now the same on the home screen and app screen.
Have ~15-20MB more application space on this build!! Had 132MB free after install before loading apps.
Scrolling through my pictures folder freezes the phone for a couple seconds after almost every swipe of the trackpad. Takes a lot longer for the thumbnail images to render on screen than the previous build I used. Scrolling through the pictures folder on build .586 was flawless. This version behaves like most of the early 5.0 builds - when it comes to viewing your pictures.
That's all I have to report for now.
mi_canuck May 6, 2010 at 12:34 am
T-Mobile My Account works just fine with .656 for me... no issues
I'm noticing scrolling through pics is fast... noticeably faster than on .593 (which wasn't bad in itself)...
Odd how there are such a wide range of impressions with this leak... I have yet to find a single problem... yet some others have nothing but problems...
Patkennedyjr May 5, 2010 at 9:08 pm
$2.99 or free? If its for free its for me!
ibzrg1570 May 5, 2010 at 9:45 pm
Does it fix the review bug? I'm running .593 and when I try to read reviews it shuts down the app.
presean May 6, 2010 at 12:21 am
Do not install this OS twitter don't work even you back to .0.593
mi_canuck May 6, 2010 at 12:37 am
Ubertwitter works perfectly fine... no issues
nolhayes May 6, 2010 at 12:31 am
Could this possibly be the TMO OS update that's suppose to occur this Tuesday? :-/
either way does anyone notice any changes?
mi_canuck May 6, 2010 at 12:36 am
No
plo May 6, 2010 at 1:30 am
The official release by T-Mobile for the 9700 on May 11th is gonna be the .586 build.
Black90404Berry May 6, 2010 at 2:14 am
Ever since the 5.0.0.586 update, the AOL and Yahoo! email icons are no longer available, just the boring white mail icon with the globe at the bottom.

Better not upgrade to this version if you using Native Twitter
lycan666 May 6, 2010 at 5:48 am
works fine for me
leftajarandy May 6, 2010 at 4:54 am
Logged in straight away?
Some people are posting that the app was not working in general at the time so maybe it was just co-incidental bad timing?
gerry702 May 6, 2010 at 6:42 am
everything works perfectly, i se uber twitter and BB twitter both are fine all apps load up and work greaet the one thing i did notice is my GPS works better with poynt and other apps
Danno_999 May 6, 2010 at 8:47 am
I get an uncaught exception error with net_rim_bb_phone_app(52) at boot up. The Twitter will not login as others have noted. All my other apps seem to be ok so far. I have lots so I won't post them all. At this point I'm pretty sure I'm going back to .593 shortly going to try a few battery pulls first.
Just a side note. Why do people even bother posting a comment telling us they are downloading the OS. Just in case you are confused silly people, nobody cares!! You don't win a prize for the fastest download. We only need to know the good or bad about the OS. It's so annoying.
msliggins May 6, 2010 at 10:17 am
I installed yesterday and have not had any issues so far. I have noticed that movement on the phone has speed up. I have not noticed the lags of .593 either. I will keeping it for a while :)
presean May 6, 2010 at 10:18 am
Ladies and gents there is a solution for twitter from ya boi presean from France, so listen: if you have some problems with logging, you must unstall your twitter app then install the leak version here http://ota.bbtweeps.com/ the old leaked then upgrade.
mrakifa May 6, 2010 at 10:18 am
Why so serious?!
maiia May 6, 2010 at 3:18 pm
I'm not having any problems with my apps, they're all working well. But I can't seem to connect to 3G. I can connect to 2G just fine .. But not 3G. Anyone going through the same problem?

So far no issues. For the Win of it.
ReyRey305 May 7, 2010 at 10:43 pm
I'm still having issues with the Media Player.
I have to stop playing a song before I unplug my headphones or the app freezes. It did the same on .593. This sucks!
ladyodin May 8, 2010 at 2:10 pm
I have done OS updates to my BB Bold 9700 before with no problems. This latest update, OS 5.0.0656, won't install onto my bold 9700. I have no idea what I did wrong. Can anyone help.
tfung May 8, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Is there an eastasian or alllanguage version yet?
scpineda May 9, 2010 at 12:07 pm
I am with T-Mobile, and the upgrade process went relatively smooth with the exception of duplicate entries being created in my Calendar afterwards. I had to go through and change the duration of some All Day events to "0 Days". I am not sure what I could have done prior to prevent this. Any suggestions?
There are two noticeable improvements that I have seen so far since upgrading this morning.
First, I have noticed an improvement in speakerphone volume. Prior to this upgrade, speakerphone volume when listening to messages through Visual Voice Mail has been low even on the loudest setting. I can now clearly hear the voice mail messages via speakerphone while I sit in my living room with the television on, whereas before I had to hold the phone up to my ear to hear messages with the speakerphone activated. The same holds true with audio in video playback in the Media Player.
Second, picture thumbnails are appearing lightning fast in the Media section, whereas there was a noticeable lag before.
So, I'm happy that these two issues have been fixed. What other improvements have you all seen? Are upgrade features ever listed with these unofficial releases?
jayrezny May 10, 2010 at 4:13 pm
facebook didnt work for me
SheeB May 10, 2010 at 7:55 pm
I got the duplicate calendar entries (typical for me it seems when doing an OS update) and all I do is a battery pull and things return to normal.
I also installed Facebook and it works fine.
Snowblind2010 May 10, 2010 at 11:37 pm
I seem to be getting better battery life with this update. Could be just me though, perhaps a placebo effect???
J-MIKE May 11, 2010 at 2:03 pm
I have a bb 9700 on the Telus network. First thing I noticed after I upgraded from my last update is ubertwitter can not connect on the 3g network. What I mean by that is I'm getting all the notifications on tweets and stuff normally... but if I try to open web link from the uber app. I get this message " this is a WI-FI service.please ensure your device has an active Wi-Fi connection and try again." I have full 3g connection and my setting for uber is set the right way for auto detection. I did battery pull and its not working (only when trying open weblink to a tweet).
all other applications works perfectly and smoother.

I noticed a increase in the battery life...and I can quote that I am a heavy user. I'm not sure about this one... could be just me... but when on a call... I put the sound volume at max to heard properly... any body notice a difference? Speaking phone is clearer.
If anybody notice the uber problem... let me know if there's a fix for it... it's kinda annoying..
Great leak OS as I'm also getting less drop calls(First I thought it was the network)
Thanks
ibzrg1570 May 12, 2010 at 10:51 pm
You have your default browser set to "Hotspot Browser" which connects to the Internet via WiFi.
Go to Browser Options>General Properties>Default Browser>Internet Browser
It should work after that.

A bug I am experiencing on Rogers Wireless running this OS is whenever I delete a new voicemail, I get a sms notification alert. I understand that Rogers must send a sms to the handset to deactivate the voicemail waiting indicator but I have never actually received a sms alert for which there is nothing in the sms inbox.
gordonzhao May 12, 2010 at 9:40 pm
Everything else works fine, haven't had any drop calls since I updated this morning. Though I'm on T-Mobile and the 3G is running around 700kbps when I ran the test on http://i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html. Small minor problem with Facebook, the app sometimes freezes from scrolling, I have to hit back and then re enter the page I was looking at in order to scroll up and down. The second problem is the lock button, it works, but it puts the phone in stand by and isn't utilizing the lock function it is suppose to. The Standby/Mute button doesn't do anything from the home screen, it actually mutes during a call though so that works as it should. Anyone else experiencing this? I may update to Turkcell's official release. But I read something about deleting a vendor.xml file? Can someone tell me where this is located?
gordonzhao May 12, 2010 at 10:02 pm
I take that last part back, I should have posted the past part in the Turkcell Official Release.
