Leaked: OS 5.0.0.1015 For The BlackBerry Storm2 9550
By
Bla1ze on 3 Nov 2010 11:23 am
Yesterday, we saw the onslaught of BlackBerry 6 leaks for devices capable of running it. Today, one device which will not be getting BlackBerry 6 at least has a brand new OS 5 leak. BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 owners, feel free to grab what has got to be the highest OS version number I have ever seen thus far. Remember, not an official OS as of yet so be sure to back your data up.
*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Cant wait to get it on my Storm!!
steveg22 Nov 3, 2010 at 11:36 am
Hope it fixes the issues with previous release and goes official soon
crashberry Nov 3, 2010 at 4:02 pm
I don't think there was ever a release with no issues. even if they do fix an issue there are many waiting to take it's place.
AJFSTORM Nov 3, 2010 at 6:37 pm
The only fix that really seemed to help my Storm was to buy a Droid Incredible. It's been fantastic ever since. Thanks RIM!
sk8er_tor Nov 3, 2010 at 8:43 pm
Yet you're still here. Now I need a fix for that!
sniickers Nov 4, 2010 at 9:29 am
nice one
corymcnutt Nov 4, 2010 at 7:57 am
Now you have a faster processor, more memory, faster browser, but a whole new set of O/S problems; they're always updating for flaws too!
gregorylkelly Nov 3, 2010 at 11:41 am
I was wondering how the numbering would work after .999
abtxpress Nov 3, 2010 at 11:45 am
Although I thought it would have went 5.0.1.xxx
thataveragejoe Nov 3, 2010 at 11:46 am
"I have ever saw thus far."
2nd grade grammar....see, saw, SEEN
abtxpress Nov 3, 2010 at 11:52 am
Really?!?!!!
ron 9530 Nov 3, 2010 at 11:47 am
:( what happen to storm 9530 i feel left out ???
Jai Manny Nov 3, 2010 at 1:50 pm
is the worst BB phone!!
btw. if you have 9530, and pay the extra insurance via Verizon, you can (if its broken) get a replacement 9550 phone instead of the 9530. as Verizon no longer supports 9530s.
My cuz has something wrong with her phone, and called in to get it replaced; they shipped her a 9550 phone.
she got a new phone, and no 2 year renewal. thats awesome!!
Agent00J Nov 4, 2010 at 12:21 pm
I traded in my super glitchy/broken 9530 for a brand new 9550 a week ago.
It's slow if you want to compare it to other brands, but... forget that for a second. The 9550's screen is much more responsive and the device is faster than the 9530. Seriously, get rid of the 9530. That phone was a JOKE! I can't believe I almost made it a full 2 years (would've been next month) with that thing.

The link wont load up
arist01 Nov 3, 2010 at 12:06 pm
Anyone install yet? Curious if the robo-voice bug from .713 and .895 have been corrected.
jsanders Nov 3, 2010 at 2:42 pm
The robotic voice issue was fixed in v.983
ron 9530 Nov 3, 2010 at 12:11 pm
i download it but i am not using storm 2 so am waiting for the leak for storm 1
Ifijay Nov 3, 2010 at 1:23 pm
If you have completedly downloaded it. I will be most grateful if you could send it to my mail box as an attachedment. I have a storm 2. My email box is ifijay@yahoo.com
ron 9530 Nov 3, 2010 at 12:12 pm

linuxdaemon Nov 3, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Here's hoping that the stuff that is broken in 5.0.0.983 is fixed without the re-introduction of the "robot voice" issue. I seriously can't believe that any carrier picked up .983 as a release, it is functional but has the build quality of the early 4.7.x releases for the 9530.
belanovanadademas Nov 3, 2010 at 12:30 pm
waiting the leak for storm 1 too!
ron 9530 Nov 3, 2010 at 12:41 pm

I have no problem updating but I still wish we had 6 on our 9550's though. C'mon RIM get us our OS6 since you canceled our 2.5 and won't confirm a 3rd Storm is in the works. :(
CODrules Nov 3, 2010 at 2:52 pm
I don`t really install leaked Os.. but I`m glad they kept upgrading and waiting for an official build :D
torano Nov 3, 2010 at 2:59 pm
Does this work good on the 9550?
ELoXL Nov 3, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Installing now.........never installed a leaked before, but everything is backed up so I reckon this will be interesting.

Everything loaded and booted in under a half hour, but it still feels the same. Going through photos, videos and yes the browser are all still the same as before. I have noticed the boot progress bar is thinner. If I do come across anything else I'll post under this comment.
arist01 Nov 3, 2010 at 4:07 pm
The last leaked OS had the ability to send text msgs with more than 160 characters...gets broken into multiple messages. Is that function in this version?
lockedtight Nov 3, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Nope, not there anymore.
ELoXL Nov 3, 2010 at 6:04 pm
Just attempted to do the over 160 character sms and its a no go.
gorith Nov 3, 2010 at 8:30 pm
160+ characters is a carrier specific issue. Im on Telus in Canada and they only allow 140. Even with .895 where so many others said they had up to 6 pages of 160 chars each, I still only had 140. found out later carriers control the limit of SMS. maybe if verizon(or whoever you are on) releases an official of this it might have the 160+ for you.
ELoXL Nov 3, 2010 at 6:06 pm
If anyone has any suggestions for me to tinker around with I would be more than glad to answer anyone's questions. I highly suggest to not hold your breath. Just looking at the version number I highly doubt there are any significant upgrades to this OS.
ELoXL Nov 4, 2010 at 8:52 am
1. Boot progress bar is thin and not as rounded at the ends. Boot time appears to have picked up a bit, but I could be wrong.
2. When hovering on any selection within the home screen (not the application screen)the icons, txt, or lettering tend to give off a quick shimmer or glow prior to remaining a solid blue. Previously hovering would just go straight to a solid blue luminescence.
3. I've had two app issues; one of which was annoying and the other a slight inconvenience. My dictionary.com app will just go fugly a bit and not hide the keyboard on demand. Scrolling through a definition is definitly not happening for whatever reason. I can't recall if there was a landscape mode for it, but there sure isn't under this OS.
My Twitter for BB app will not show a notification at the top of the display (you know the mini icon indicator). I actually had to scroll through my apps to see what had the red asterisk symbol above to find out what app had a new message or the like. That I found to be quite and inconvenience and just not cool.
Rest assured that the text, BBM, and mail icons do display at the top successfully.
4. This may be just a "it's me" thing, but I find scrolling through apps as well as entering and exiting apps or menus transitioning more smooth. Maybe I'm looking for things that are not really there, but I actually find the experience quite enjoyable when going in and out of stuff.
Well thats all I've noticed so far, but I will throw anything of significance up here if I come across anything else. Would love to hear what other's experiences are. I'm considering of going back to my previous release though if the notification issue with twitter cant get resolved. I reckon I'll try to reinstall it at least to see if that remedies the issue.
chuckh0308 Nov 3, 2010 at 7:00 pm
I made the dreadful mistake of loading 895, but then wasn't quite dumb enough for 983, so I skipped that one. I hope this one actually works correctly (or at least as good or better than, say, 517), because I don't want to fart around with another OS disaster. I'm downloading, but not installing until I find out what works and what doesn't! Go RIM....lol!
Mismutek Nov 4, 2010 at 2:03 am
983 has been best OS so far. Fixed the robot noise faster load time better response. Last leaked os crashed my phone luckily new DM fixes that unlike the old DM.
iMixProductionz Nov 4, 2010 at 6:19 am
I mean come on this is the only BB OS that ends in 4 digits...why us how come we can't have OS6 already ...and possibly some storm3 news plz
PossumPete Nov 4, 2010 at 7:41 am
What kind of loser spams comments sections? I know I came here to buy some Jordans. Is it 1987 still?
Allatoms Nov 4, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Been running this OS for a day.
Looks like a really great OS. its going to be a solid base for hybrid builders. No media issue, or robotic voices.
I would say the browser is a lil slow.
But once a hybrid comes out, its going to be a is really great version.
I reccomend Mark.Hayes hybrids. Hopfully he come out with one soon.
Trusouljar Nov 4, 2010 at 6:04 pm
hahahahahh no 0s6
njamison Nov 4, 2010 at 7:43 pm
No Robot Voice (infact clearer calls all around), New UI for bbm chats? I think so. my app memory is up from a regular 82.3mb to 98.5mb! By far the best I have used...
Only complaint is that the crunchSMS option is not in contacts anymore but still works from app.
Splendid.
ELoXL Nov 4, 2010 at 8:44 pm
I thought it may have been just me, but I saw a significant jump in app memory. I've been having some convenience issues myself with certain apps, but I found through re-installation my app issues were resolved.
It appears that BBM and App World are easier to select;selection areas are easier to press due to wider birth. I reckon you're spot on with your findings.
Cheers
ELoXL Nov 4, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Thank god - it just hit me now that there are no more status updates in BBM. Personally they were sooo annoying.
crush29830 Nov 5, 2010 at 9:13 am
Im using an unlocked Storm2 on Tmobile and I did get a memory boost and my web browser is much faster. I havent noticed anything else yet.
dgburns Nov 6, 2010 at 9:26 pm

bhill1976 Nov 11, 2010 at 10:14 am
Can someone post the leaked OS elsewhere?
hilarylynn Nov 23, 2010 at 6:00 pm
I'll wait until the official version comes out - I like the concept of the new platform a lot though. Keeps getting cleaner and cleaner :D
