It's fun doing this show with Rene. He just winds me up and let's me go!

The last podcast I did with him, on What Happened to BlackBerry, was his most popular Vector podcast ever (like 150k downloads), so will be interesting to see where this one goes.

Lots of interesting stuff in here.

edriss

Listening to it now. 18mins in. I like your input and open mindedness.

Fortunately and unfortunately BlackBerry has a lot of assets. This way, on the one hand it would be stupid to let such brand die. On the other hand, there's a lot of rumours in banking concerning even BBM.com as a new Twitter! Hope, new People in Waterloo do see how big power they have. Take e.g. BB10 browser into account. I said it once and repeat another time: give it a powerful name and release for other systems. There's no better mobile browser on the market. Smart marketing for BlackBerry doesn't have to cost much...

That's an awesome suggestion.

It is an awesome idea.

However it has to also offer something that other browsers dont. For example, 'Blackberry browser for iOS is the most secure iOS browser in the world'. All data should automatically be encrypted while in transit and at rest. Furthermore, all data should travel through BB infrastructure (BIS) so that it is secure.'

Or something like that.

Supa_Fly1

BlackBerry infrastructure is NOT BIS, it's the NOC!!

OMG! BID is just a small and consumer part. The higher end of the NOC security is via BES connections routed through. Hosted BES service is now available for BB10 devices and EMM services.

That said BIS is not something providers ever want to support again. Torch team that brought us the early beginnings of the BB10 browser back in BBOS6, had an internal proxy within that browser offering security and BlackBerry has a patent on this. Engineers really.

Brilliant idea. I was just talking to a friend about 'Reader' feature and how thoughtful the development team were when building BB10. Being that Safari and Chrome and Bing are HUGE, how can you win browser space?

Posted via CB10

Just an FYI, that feature has been on iOS for a long time.

Awesome. Downloading now.

When are you going to convince Rene to join team blackberry for his sexy podcasting skills

Really, the best combo is CBK and René

Q10 appears here in the UK on 17 January with 3 mobile.
£35 month plan, now that's great price compared to Vodafone

I wonder... and hope they survive and overtake all

The_Merovingian

As do I. But I just saw a bad omen, I went to T-mobiles website and the only blackberry for sale was the Curve 9315. What happened to the Z10 and Q10??? I will take this as no Z30 coming either. :(

Observation Junkie

Carphone Warehouse has bought back z30 and 3 mobile is releasing q10 on 17th. Q10 can be purchased under the EE brand

BlackBerry is "signing up" new BES10 corporations around the world.... India is the latest iteration of this - all over the papers today.

Are NEW multi thousand seat BES10 deployments worthless?

Also, you mentioned nothing about BlackBerry being the "preeminent MDM solution on the planet" with more clients than all of the competition combined....

Lastly, BYOD is being presented as "employee choice" - the "fact of the matter is" that companies will gladly let people bring their own phones to work... why?.... c'mon why?

That's "right" so the company does not have to buy them for the employees.... also, speak with any CIO and ask about people whining because "Johhny got the newer version of X phone and I want one too".... phones "disappeared" in companies, were broken and met all kinds of "untimely deaths"... so some millienial could get the newest version... Muy Expensivo for our Spanish speaking friends....

BlackBerry's Death has Been Greatly Exaggerated... because it just came out of a coma under Dr. Chen....

I speak Spanish and your language mocking skills are remarkable! Good job!

Learning curve complaints are for weak people. If you can't adapt, you suck, and need to step up your game. BlackBerry 10 is the best.

Posted via CB10

crumbonthefloor

C'mon! BlackBerry 10 is too easy to use. People are just lazy to learn. That's just my point of view

mkmilan

Thanks for calling me lazy ! I rely on my intelligence to ascertain what meets the way I live and work, and obviously you use yours to be insulting. Ease of use does NOT mean worthwhile. Just MY point of view .....

crumbonthefloor

If you felt offended by my comment, I'd like to apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone by my lack of proper wording

freddysrevng3

"Learning curve complaints" + no marketing + no Instagram/Netflix = Very Few Consumer Purchases.....

freddysrevng3

Equals ... what CIO is going to "go to the mats for BlackBerry" and buy them for their company so Fanboys and Android Heads can whine about "how uncool they are"...... Answer... Apparently, not many...

i went from Bold 9700 to the Z10 and it wasn´t the end of the world, it was´nt difficult to move over so i don´t agree when ppl say it´s soooo hard to go from OS6 to OS10 ... please

i think it´s excellent and i love my Z10 ....

so what´s all the whining about?????

edriss

I went from 9900 to Z10 then got a Q10. I think I know what those people were talking about.

I kept looking for a track pad and escape key. So that was annoying as hell so I would just use my Z10 and eventually I sold my Q10.

I also found the icons very big. On the Q10 it should have smaller icons.

So I get it

Posted from the Zed 10 on the CB10 app

Halifax Guy

Spoken like someone with younger eyes. I like the larger icons ... as do my old(er) eyes.

Posted via CB10

edriss

Haha! Fair enough it's a personal preference

I do tend to like smaller fonts and icons.

Posted from the Zed 10 on the CB10 app

Olha Zemts

Yes, that's the first thing I thought about q10- icons should be smaller or screen should be bigger, that would made it work

freddysrevng3

Kevin

Why would a "US or Canadian Carrier" push BlackBerry when it uses, probably, 60% less data than an iPhone or Android phone?

Also, why would they push a BlackBerry when it requires "retraining" all of their reps to be able to understand/use/teach swipe gestures on BB10?

Answer to both.... they haven't been....

huungryshark

Yeah, they wouldn't the gestures when nobody train them. How many BB10 Users know all gestures? How Do you you know how to use them when nobody tells you that you have to swipe 4 times from up right corner to the middle of the screen to reload the Hub for example?

Ericsson GF198(GSM900) im D2 Privat Netz

RiceBerry89

Wow I didn't know that lol

Black Panther Z10

GeneralHerzog

Resetting the hub isn't 'generally' an issue for 'normal' users.
That's more a power user trick.

Having said that, reps should know that sort of thing, but most reps today just finished grade 8 for the third time so I'm not surprised.

Swiping really isn't that hard to learn.

The problem is change. People don't like change.
Swiping is obviously the new thing as Apple is now using it sooooo......

From my Vader Zed

freddysrevng3

Guy on Boy Genius Report - reviewing Z10 - said it took him "4 days to learn the swipe up gesture"....

4 DAYS!!!!!

And this kid lives reviewing phones for a big part of his meager existence.

Nothing "Intuitive" about BB10 and if you don't have someone in a store showing people how to "use it" they walk up, try it, get confused, put it down..... go to Android section.... simple... "Thanks, Francois Boulben"...

Prem WatsApp

Can't really blame people, if BB Marketing only tells them what BB10 "can't do" in 30 secs. ;-)

Have you revisited the Super Bowl commercial that has the intro by "CMO" F.B.? Pathetic.

My name is Prem, I'm using BBM ... from my QuZe10 ...whatarhyme...

playpen007

I think BlackBerry will sale like hot cake if it comes out with physical keyboard and bigger screen real estate. Or bigger screen with slide out keyboard. People seem to shift toward bigger screen now.

freddysrevng3

Bigger screen - some sort of "home button" like on 9900 - people loved that phone..

Prem WatsApp

I personally wouldn't want a home button on the Q10 successor, BB10 works fine without it, but I agree, if that is what the market screams for, give it to them for the sake of market share and BBRY's survival.

My name is Prem, I'm using BBM ... from my QuZe10 ...whatarhyme...

freedomx20a

i could never go back to the dated concept of the 'home' button. Its just so annoying to use it.

Soeasy

Sell like hotcakes? What number does hotcakes signify? 10mm? 20mm?

d.roc

Can't wait to hear it. I hope BlackBerry will be around for a long time. BB10 is a real good experience. It should definitely be in the hands of more people.

Welldone. I finally saw 2 other Z10´s (like mine lol) over here in PORTUGAL.
BB needs to push more and i think the route JC is taking seems good, i do everything i can to promote BB over here but it´s clearly a very, very difficult battle.

but ppl i show the Z10 r actually surprised and impressed, so there is huge potential, the message has to get through!!!!

Vamos BB!!!!

I have a (probably stupid) question: how do I download directly the Mp3 from a BB10 device?
If I click on the "download directly" link or if I use the option open it in the browser the Mp3 just start streaming but I do not see the option save as.. anywhere. I would like to download the file now and listen to it once I travel (without network). Thanks for your help!

Great podcast Kevin! Long but worth listening to.

Attending a conference this week in DC and, as usual, mostly Android and iOS users.

When asked about my device, I was happy to report is was a new Blackberry Z30 and I could get 10 hours of heavy use easily without recharging.

There was no response other than "oh" as some left in search of an a/c outlet.

I used my Z10 to create this CrackBerry madness!

alan510

Mow that was a good discussion. René is a good interviewer - the smarts to listen and logically follow the conversation. Kevin made some excellent points, still a little fixated on new hardware because new phones are always exciting I guess. Where I am getting excited is with the type of software BlackBerry is developing. I look forward to BlackBerry Express coming out of beta, the latest improvements in the BlackBerry 10 OS, more goodness from TAT and BBM. For me, 2014 is looking exciting even without much new hardware.

i got my BBQ10 the previous day..it was obsolutely lovable with its design.. when i got my BBQ10 i was eventually get started as usually everybody does connecting to wifi and sigining to BB account and after that i updated my BBQ10 to BLACKBERRY OS 10.2.0.424 and after i was checking all my features and i was thrilled by the performance of camera..it was not so effective and the snaps look to be noisy and it was like a 2MP camera..i went up to my nokia lumia720 and took a snap and compared to my BBQ10 snap..extreme differ from nokia lumia720..the camera was not good in my BBQ10 and also bit freaky jerk in my speaker when i'm listening to music..i wish it was the only problem with my device i got or due to OS update.. what can i do to get my camera more effective..here i was not talking about comparision from nokia lumia720..but my BBQ10 camera at any cost doesn't seems to look like an 8MP camera.. so please give your suggestiions to remedy this problem..shall i go to exchange of my BBQ10 with another BBQ10(i think it was manufacture defect in terms of camera part only in my device)....now what i've to do?

Great podcast, guys!

I particularly appreciate the discussion around the announcement, timing, and impact of the board’s decision to seek “strategic alternatives” in the middle of the first year of a huge (arguably make-or-break) product launch. As you correctly noted, that one decision essentially to put a ‘For Sale’ sign up on the business killed momentum for all the reasons you discussed. So you have a situation where traction is critical… and the board does the single most destructive thing it possibly could to kill all momentum. Outside of the positive shifts in structure and culture within the company, your discussion about Thorsten's (and Frank's) results ("BB10 didn't sell enough", "they overbuilt inventory", "it's his people that didn't go to plan", "he hadn't yet pivoted on strategy") becomes almost irrelevant in the face of the magnitude of the board’s actions that neutered their efforts (after what was a successful launch to positive reviews). To criticize management for poor traction in that situation is comparable to criticizing a runner who falls on his face after his coach tied his shoelaces together. No coach would be so stupid but I would argue that BlackBerry’s board exhibited a level of idiocy in 2013 that is unparalleled (to my knowledge, excluding illegal activity) in history.

As someone once said, "I try to buy stock in businesses that are so wonderful that an idiot can run them. Because sooner or later, one will." I think we've just seen the worst for BlackBerry. Now the shoelaces are untied, the runner is dusted off, it is 2014 and there is ground to be made up. Onwards and upwards from here. It’s a good thing it is a marathon and not a sprint.
