BlackBerry will make money on phones again one day

Tell me if you've heard this question before. Why is BlackBerry still making phones? You've heard it before, right? Of course, you have. Every blog, media outlet and armchair CEO that questions how BlackBerry is still alive resorts to asking that same tired question though they never provide an answer to it because an answer can only come from the top. Right now, the top is BlackBerry CEO John Chen and a new interview with Business Insider sheds some light on why exactly BlackBerry keeps on building phones once again.

BlackBerry Chief Security Officer David Kleidermacher

Despite having joined the company back in February, we've not heard a lot about what BlackBerry Chief Security Officer David Kleidermacher is working on at BlackBerry. As we know from the announcement of his arrival, his main focus, according to BlackBerry CEO John Chen, is to 'help extend BlackBerry's gold standard of security as we work with customers to meet new cybersecurity challenges' and more specifically, 'securing the Internet of Things and embedded systems'.

That's the company quote of what Kleidermacher does and why he's at BlackBerry but a new interview with the man himself from German site Elektronik Praxis sheds some light on his daily activities and where he sees BlackBerry in the context of embedded systems and IoT.

John Chen speaks out against Shafiq Qaadri, the Ontario MPP, who wants legislature to drop its BlackBerry-only policy

Last week, Etobicoke North MPP Shafiq Qaadri, introduced a petition asking the Ontario legislature to allow members and staff to use a variety of smartphones instead of sticking to the BlackBerry-only policy but did so in a rather terrible way. Qaadri called the assembly's policy "handicapping, retarding and penalizing MPPs" to which many, including, Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris found highly offensive not only for the language used but also the 'anti-BlackBerry' sentiment behind it as noted by The Record.

Assuming the handle @JohnChen, BlackBerry CEO John Chen is now on Twitter. His first Tweet? A mention to T-Mobile CEO John Legere, of course, who earlier took to Twitter to show himself wearing a BlackBerry T-shirt.

John Chen teases 'something brewing'

In an interview with CNBC, John Chen hinted that BlackBerry may have another strategy up its sleeve when it comes to the future of apps on its platform. During the interview Chen says "I am not at liberty to say what we are doing beyond the Amazon apps, but we are working hard at it." Exactly what the plans could entail, or when we could see any changes come are unknown, but it is good to see that BlackBerry has not just become complacent with their Amazon partnership.

Be sure to watch the full interview, to see all of what Chen had to say to CNBC. What do you think he has in store? Sound off in the comments and let us know your thoughts.

BlackBerry earns 'most improved' Net Promoter Score

While BlackBerry has had a bit of a rough go competing against Apple and Android over the past few years, the sentiment surrounding the company has begun to change for the better if only ever so slightly. The road ahead is long, twisty and full of hills but at least BlackBerry is still on the road and one of sign of that sentiment change I referred to has come by way of a new report coming from Satmetrix wherein BlackBerry scored the largest overall Net Promoter Score increase for the year and earned 'most improved' among U.S. consumers.

BlackBerry is cash flow positive and growing the software business

Earlier this morning BlackBerry reported Q4 results for fiscal 2015. Revenue dropped from $793 million in Q3 to only $660 million in Q4, but that's mostly hardware related. On most other metrics things are looking up for the company, which explains the stock market's mildly positive reaction to the results. The stock is up about 20 cents as I write this, to US $9.52 per share.

The biggest one arguably comes by way of their unveiling of the company's plans for cross-platform services via what they're calling the BlackBerry Experience Suite. The suite was noted to be 'a major company-wide initiative in BlackBerry's commitment to build out its robust software portfolio' and that includes bringing some beloved, and thus far BlackBerry 10 only, features to other platforms such as iOS, Android and Windows.
