Following the announcement earlier this month that Instagram was working on a way to let users export their data from the platform, the service called 'Data Download' is now available on desktop and coming soon to the Android and iOS apps.

Once you request your data, Instagrams servers will compile it all up for you within the next 48 hours and you'll be able to download it, review it and do whatever you wish with it after that.

We'll email you a link to a file with your photos, comments, profile information and more. We can only work on one request from your account at a time, and it may take up to 48 hours to collect this data and send it to you.

How to download your data from Instagram

  • Go to Instagram from your computer
  • Click on your profile and then the gear icon
  • Choose Privacy and Security
  • Scroll down and click Request Download under the Data Download section
  • Enter your email and click Next

Arguably, this should have been available long ago to users but alas, the European Union's GDPR privacy laws that kick on May 25th helped push Instagram into compliance. In any case, it's great to see it available. Just do me a favor and don't freak out if you download it and find out they have a lot of info about you, unless it's something super fishy that they shouldn't have.
