Inst10 out of beta and now available from BlackBerry World

After a short stint in BlackBerry Beta Zone and a few name changes, third party Instagram client Inst10 has made its way to BlackBerry World. It's a fully featured client with a lot of extras too. The app will take a freemium style model. To give you a feel of all the pro features, there is a 7-day trial available.

If you have been trying out the app whilst in beta, you'll agree with me that it's a pretty good Instagram client. You're going to hear people ask why do we need it when we already have iGrann. But isn't life better with options? I welcome more variations, it keeps developers on their toes.

Instagram has to be the biggest photo sharing/social media app out there at the moment. Although we don't have a native BlackBerry 10 version yet, thanks to OS 10.2.1 it's real easy to install Instagram on your BlackBerry Z3.

You may notice in the image above that I used my Z30 for the photo. The only reason I did this is that getting Instagram onto your Z3 is done just the same with all other BlackBerry 10 handsets.

You can choose to send private images and/or videos to your friends where they'll show up in their private inbox.

We're not totally sure that it's an alternative to sending files over BBM or even just plain old MMS, but it's always nice to have options.

One thing we've all been eagerly awaiting for is the release of Instagram for BlackBerry 10. If you had a chance to read through our BlackBerry 10 apps forum today you'll be pleased to know that one developer, Gaspertrix, has taken up the gauntlet of coding his own native version.

As he says, this is not just a viewer for Instagram, but a full featured application with a variety of features so that we no longer have to side load the Android bar file. A full list of current capabilities and those that are planned are shown below.

Have Instagram sideloaded on your BlackBerry 10 device? If so, chances are you've noticed there is a bit of a keyboard bug with the app though that clearly hasn't stopped folks from using it. If you've held off loading it though because you can't appropriately comment, there's actually a fairly easy fix for it.

It does require some prior knowledge of sideloading apps but if you managed to get Instagram loaded already then that shouldn't much of an issue. Check out the video above for a quick run through of it or jump below to read through the written out guide of it all.

Over the past few days there has been a lot of hoopla surrounding Instagram and their apparent shutting down of third-party applications. Windows Phone users had issues with their third-party clients like Instance and for BlackBerry 10 users using the sideloaded Android version, the situation was much the same with images randomly disappearing after having been uploaded.

For their part, Instagram stated they weren't intentionally blocking any apps but rather just improving their spam filters to better improve the services and apparently they were tuned a little too aggressive. Now, it appears as though whatever change Instagram made to their API initially, is no longer the case and images uploaded via third-party apps are once again working.

Jul 02, 2013 Instagram coming to BlackBerry before Google Glass

Instagram

In a recent interview, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom was prodded about getting their photo (and now video) sharing app onto Google Glass. His response?

"We're not yet on Blackberry or Windows Phone, so I think those will come before Google Glass. ... I'm not saying those will come anytime soon. I’m just saying that in order of priority, the way we evaluate where to expand to is really simply where our users are, and where the growth is. It took us a very long time to get to Android."

Saying we won't get it anytime soon is a pretty big caveat, but to me the question now is if Instagram will come to Windows Phone or BlackBerry first. These two platforms are duking it out for third place, and Nokia's high-quality cameras are going to be hard for Instagram to ignore. It took a year and a half for Instagram to make the leap from iOS to Android, and a similar wait for a BlackBerry version following a Windows Phone launch would be less than ideal.

At the very least, Google's gimmicky eyewear won't be budding in line. How many of you guys are looking forward to Instagram on BlackBerry? Is the Android sideload good enough? How much of a dealbreaker are things like a native Instagram app to potential new users?
