Indian Government Gets the OK From RIM To Monitor BlackBerry Network Posted in News & Rumors on 22 May 2008 15:42 by James Falconer |
News came out today that RIM has backed down and will be allowing the Indian government to monitor the BlackBerry network in India. The only concession RIM received from the Indian government was a promise that it won't be held liable if there's a leak of users' personal information. A promise? I certainly hope it's more iron-clad than that (I'm sure it is). No word yet on when the government will start monitoring the network, but I'd guess it would happen sooner than later. This has been going on for some time now, and now that the Indian government has 'won' this one with RIM backing down... They'll want to get crackin' on it I'm sure. [ via Engadget Mobile ]

The names RIM and BlackBerry are registered Trademarks of Research in Motion Limited. |

The saga continues?... or perhaps it is coming to an end.

Super Big Mistake on this move. This basically means that the Indian Government is tapped in at RIM's NOC in Canada. Bad move, this is why I don't like RIM's latest acts of cowering down just to make a sale. First it was carriers requesting GPS to be diabled, now it's the government requiring the monitor of network traffic. If India is in, there is now nothing keeping other governments from doing the same thing.
You all still think that you can say your BB is secure from prying eyes now? :whatajoke:
RIM and Mike L. needs to grow a pair and stand their ground.
They should now be kowtowing the the Indian Gov't, I say F>ck 'Em and send them to voicemail. If they have access to users data that is as mentioned above allowing other governments to demand that and much more. Its one thing for citizen's to say the gov't has direct access to your data (almost jokingly) it's another thing that they actually do.
If RIM gave the US Gov't access to our data (it would be a national secret and we wouldn't know about it) I would cancel my RIM account.
Also allowing carriers to dictate terms is BS, take a page from the jobs handbook and say this is it or we will sell unlocked phones at a lower price and screw you. Simple and easy.
That picture just about sums it up doesn't it? Too good.
Wow, the Indian Govt wants to monitor BB? Keep this in mind, the current population of India as of 2007 was 1,129,866,154, the US has only a quarter of that. Does anyone really think that their Government will sucessfully be able to monitor every individual that has a black berry? Granted not everyone in India would have a black berry but if even 30% of the general population did, they have their work really cut out for them.
Regardless of how people view this, we are all being watched, tracked, monitored in some way shape or form... if you have a credit card, SSN, utility bill, vehicle, etc, you are entered into a system, monitored and tracked. Not sure what the big deal is. As long as you aren't doing some illegal activity, why worry?
It's not about worrying about being watched if you don't do anything wrong. It's about being watched, period. It's the whole tyranical governement of the world thing. Did you ever read 1984? You should... that's basically where we're headed.
Also, I have a very hard time seeing terrorists BBMing back and forth on who and where they're going to hit next. Maybe instead of the governments watching it's law-binding citizens they should be working more on hitting the terrorists first. I'm not seeing that now... anywhere... regardless of what anyone says. The terrorist issue is a rat problem. You don't monitor a rat problem... you eliminate it with brute force.
