iGrann - a full featured native Instagram client coming soon for BlackBerry 10

By Alicia Erlich on 28 Sep 2013 07:15 pm EDT

One thing we've all been eagerly awaiting for is the release of Instagram for BlackBerry 10. If you had a chance to read through our BlackBerry 10 apps forum today you'll be pleased to know that one developer, Gaspertrix, has taken up the gauntlet of coding his own native version.

As he says, this is not just a viewer for Instagram, but a full featured application with a variety of features so that we no longer have to side load the Android bar file. A full list of current capabilities and those that are planned are shown below.

What you can do with this app:

  • Register
  • Login
  • Recover Password
  • Edit Profile Information
  • Browse Feed
  • Browse Photos
  • Explore Popular
  • Search Users
  • Search Hashtags
  • View News
  • Upload Photos
  • Comment
  • Like / Unlike
  • Follow / Unfollow
  • Browse Profiles
  • Share

What you can not do with this app:

  • Apply filters to photos (planned)
  • Browse Videos (planned)
  • Upload Videos (planned)
  • Receive push notifications

While it is still a work in progress, the developer is currently working on the design via a simulator and is open to suggestions. He has even stated the application will be free upon launch. Based on the initial screenshots I for one am looking forward to using it. You can follow the progress and participate in the discussion at the link below. Also, be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.

iGrann - a full featured native Instagram client coming soon for BlackBerry 10

Hit comment too early, but the apply filters to photos function is already taken care of by the native editor. I'd think it'd be redundant to double-filter one's lunch.

True, but it adds simplicity to the equation as well. You know some people can't be bothered to look in two places, lol.

Posted via CB10 on my white Z10 & lovin' it!

Is it possible to just 'call up' the built-in filtering/editor directly from an app? Might not be perfect, but it would do...

Posted via CB10

Thats what I used to do on iOS. Its more logical to snap photos in the moment quickly through the native app then upload through instagram later on

Posted with my Q10, the best damn phone on this planet.

First... port was good, sideloading is a pain though, especially when installing leaks then re sideloading everything over and over again. Native will be much better!! Id pay top dollar once video is included.

To avoid action from Instagram, the dev said he'd make it free anyway so no worries about that.

Posted via CB10 on my white Z10 & lovin' it!

It's amusing people think making the app free will keep them safe from having it removed.

Sadly I expect this to be removed within 1 week.

Come we are Prosumer Blackberry users , we pay premium for apps, if this is going to be Instagram native to BB my $1.99 is ready !! Next is Netflix if it can be done !!

I think we have to accept that we'll be paying for apps that might be free / ad supported on other platforms.

I won't pay for an app that also has ads though... but if it brings more apps that I want onto BB10, sure I'll pay $2 bucks. I think we've all lost sight of the value we place on these apps, and just expect everything to be free (have you ever clicked an ad in Angry Birds INTENTIONALLY? I know I haven't).

Plus we have free apps that other platforms have to pay for. Hype Machine is free on BlackBerry 10 but is $3.99 on iOS.

+ 1. I am with you. My wallet is open and ready to pay for a native Instagram app that I can download from BlackBerry world instead of side loading it.

Wow, that was fast. That thread started only a couple hours ago.

--Q10 and Canadian all the way! Posted via CB10 on #IChooseBlackBerry10

If Instagram isn't making a BB10 app, are they likely to try to shut this down?

I known they've been picky about allowing third party apps in the past.

"In vino veritas, in aqua sanitas."

Was wondering same...

I haven't read the forums thread on it yet. I'm sure it's been discussed there.

This is how you CB10, son!

All I know is from reading that thread linked to in the article. I know there's one on Windows Phone that they haven't shut down and one poster even said that they said explicitly they will allow it on WP (Instagram doesn't provide an official application for WP either). As long as the application doesn't use any part of the name Instagram, according to that thread, it should be good.

It's all speculation I think.

--Q10 and Canadian all the way! Posted via CB10 on #IChooseBlackBerry10

Windows Phone has 7 Instagram apps, with 2 apps having official nod from instagram team, basically they don't care unless you use the name "instagram".

6tag is one of them that had to change their name before (was too closely named to Instagram); it's the one I have on my 1020. But yeah, they don't really care otherwise which is good for us.

Here is what bugs me.... nobody knows BB10 better than Blackberry and nobody knows the Instagram APIs like Instagram....yet a completely independent 3th party jumps up to the task and manages to weave together something that is apparently very acceptable (I don't know, don't give a rat's behind about Instagram).

Knowing this, wouldn't a company like BB with, I dunno ...3 BILLION buttons on its shirt, been able to fund the development of a kick-tushy application in a few months? What is it I'm missing? How did those guys from huh... *scroll up to get that name*....Gaspertrix manage to this with most liketly 300,000x less money in their bank account manage to do it????

U guys complain you wanted instagram it's coming soon now u guys complain " why now "? ....

Because contrary to popular belief, Blackberry is not dead... It is regrouping and condensing to a more solid and resilient core, and that will still require apps. Plus there are millions of devices out there which still work and people who want to enjoy them with new apps. Kudos to devs like this one who are working hard to bring us apps, even knowing the state of BB and the worldwide market share.

+ 1. I concur with your comment. BlackBerry needs to continue improving the BB10 platform and getting more of the big named apps.

Posted via CB10 from my spectacular Z10

BB is death. Don't mean to be a troll or to mess with you guys but comments like this are just sad. Instead of recognizing the reality you keep dreaming that BB will be back... Sorry to break it to you but it is not going to happen.

It is a good thing that BB is still fighting. But the inevitable is coming...

Better late than never. Some good news despite all the negative news on the site enjoy it

Posted via cb10 from my Z10.2.0.1725

I don't care for instagram, but I'd be willing to make a donation for his efforts.. Hopefully BlackBerry is going to as well.

Posted from my Zed10 via CB10, follow my channel C00121C1B

Curious, why don't we already have this via an app like Instago? How do we know Instagram will let this fly?

Posted via CB10

We don't. But if they allowed it on Windows Phone, they might allow this. Either way, it doesn't make a difference to me.

--Q10 and Canadian all the way! Posted via CB10 on #IChooseBlackBerry10

If they allow it on WP but not on BlackBerry (especially if THEY aren't even supporting it) then it's just them being childish and vindictive.

Would say a lot about them.

Posted via CB10

Don't worry, Windows Phone has 7 instagram apps and they have not banned any app, so be positive.

They actually supported the instagram app "Instance" on windowsphone. They had the dev send the file over and they checked it over.

Ahhh thanks! :) I guess I won't need to sell my girlfriends Z10 anymore. She kept bugging me about this and finally I decided to just get her an iPhone! Not anymore! super overjoyed.

(less stress on me) haha

Posted via cb10 from my Z10.2.0.1725

Totally, don't get the appeal, Instagram is like Facebook - a waste of your life.

Now let me get back to posting messages on CB!

My teen want something like this so she can hold her z10 with pride and not ask for a iPhone or droid because of apps.

Posted via CB10 / Z10

Don't care about instagram. But hopefully it will shut down some if these people who can't wait to see a 1k pics of food or whatever.

Posted via CB10

You'll only see food if you follow people who post food. You can always choose the right people.

Posted via CB10

Not to be cynical on things but IF INSTAGRAM will shut this down, it will only be because they see this as a slap on their "picky" face.
I'm glad we'll have this soon! :)

Posted via CB10

BlackBerry should have done this months ago instead of lying to people. I don't use Instagram but for those who've wanted it great news.

Posted via CB10 from the BlackBerry Z10

Just a ridiculous comment. How does this have anything to do with BlackBerry and how did BlackBerry lie?

Get over it man, your negative perception of BlackBerry is based on "promises" generated by crackberry people that have put promises and guarantees in the mouths of BlackBerry Employees. Nothing has ever been promised, we just take it that way and then get passed when something isn't delivered on time( again the time we decide is a "promised" timeline)

The only thing you have an argument with is BB10 coming out a month later than hoped and the BBM fiasco this passed weekend.

BlackBerry going private can't happen soon enough so this type of entitlement bull crap stops

Posted via CB10

Suggest it in the forums, developer is taking all requests into consideration and asking for your opinions.

Posted via cb10 from my Z10.2.0.1725

Depends on API limitations, but yes the dev is trying to make it as fully-functional and integrated into the OS as possible. SayIt has "Share" integration though so I wouldn't be surprised if he was able to achieve it as well.

Posted via CB10 on my white Z10 & lovin' it!

I 100% agree with you. And if he isn't charging for it- Kevin should allow a donate button.
I don't see myself using this but I will download it and play with it for no other reason than the dev took the time to make it
Big thanks!!!!!!

Dev should make a donation option. I'll gladly donate to anyone who is working to fill the gaps in the missing apps on bb10!!

Posted via CB10

People need to understand BlackBerry did everything they could to get an official Instagram app on BB10, offered money and offered to build it themselves. Instagram said no. This type of thing is all on Instagram. So cool, i will support this developer for working his but off to bring a version of an app everyone wants. I really have no interest in supporting Instagram in any way though.

Posted via CB10

Maybe give the Dev some credit. Unless you've contributed something worthwhile besides juvenile comments?

Posted via CB10 from my Z10

This is awesome! I'm glad somebody is stepping up and allowing us to have full availability of this app! It may start out with missing features but with time it will get better because I know everyone on BlackBerry will download this!

What happened to the "I promise Instagram is coming to bb10" statements? What was the source and what changed?

Posted via CB10

Read the post. Still in development. Give him some credit bro. I don't see you trying to code a native Instagram app

Posted via Vader10

Why be a jerk? Can you develop a worthwhile native app? Nobody is stopping you from sticking to your sideload

Posted via CB10 from my Z10

The only perk I see to this over the side load is the ability to use the keyboard but once video and push notifications are implemented, this will probably be my go to for instagram.

Hopefully it stays free too. It'd be nice to tell people that they can get BB10 with an instagram client that they don't have to pay for. (Some people are stingy)

Posted via CB10

Man I'm happy we are even getting a a NATIVE app that can upload to Instagram (and I don't even use or plan to use Instagram).

Posted via CB10

Exactly. We have a native client coming to BB10 yet people are still complaining. What is wrong with you people? I for one will be very happy with a native ig. I hardly use the filters now anyway.

Posted via Vader10

Hi I'm not sure if you know how to use your BB10 but the native camera has filters built-in.... pretty sure no one would die from having to use it that way until the Dev adds the function

Posted via CB10 from my Z10

This is awesome in a way, since a fan will bring (maybe) a great instagram experience to BlackBerry 10. However it is demonstrative of some issues at BlackBerry. If an isolated person is able to build that client why didn't BlackBerry think of it and hire like 100 devs to have the top apps whenever possible instead of trying to convince instagram to develop their own. Doesn't make any sense to me. But it is pretty crazy that now Michael clewley asks for the dev contact at BlackBerry !!! Am I missing something?

I am Zeeing things. There I Zed it.

That's what windows did to fill the app gap and it hasn't helped them

Posted via CB10 from my Z10

Michael Clewley just asked On Twitter if CrackBerry could hook him up with the Dev, so hopefully this means he'll be getting a phone to test it on.

"In vino veritas, in aqua sanitas."

Good move, hope after this people will be calm and start realising that instagram is a less useful bored app.

Posted via CB10

Gaspertrix, thank you much for doing this. The app looks really nice in the photos you shared. I am looking forward to using it.

This may be off topic, but I was outside an Apple store in the York dale mall in Toronto...it was full all afternoon. It is like a blind cult. You can't compete on the consumer side of things with that kind of blind fanaticism. BlackBerry should market it's devices as corporate and professional devices. For people that want to be exclusive and differentiate themselves from the crowd. Like a Rolex watch, Mercedes, Audio etc. Don't chase mainstream. When I get the z30, it will be the best....the Rolex of smart phones.....love it!

BlackBerry will survive in the Corporate and Government Sectors! My Z10 is so much better than an iphone!

Would Love to be able to crop the whole pic without having to go through hell to edit it because it can't fit within the instagram box

Posted via CB10

Michael Clewley has just posted about this on his Channel let's get this rolling

Posted via CB10 with my Z10

Me too. I would never never leave BB for instagram. Hell No!!! But I dearly support the IGrann Developer. If this really happens. Good initiative. They think we will go away. No way, they are actually bringing the genuineness in us. Damn shoot!!!! :)

This is an heroic endeavor. This should work and the developer would have a lot of success on the condition that Instagram would never come to BB. If however, Instagram decides to join the party, Igrann might be pushed out of business, just like OpenWhatsApp.

I love you developers especially when you are loyal to BlackBerry I will pay whatever you ask for this app

Posted via CB10

Mhmmmm interesting please do continue. This will stop the ppl complaining about the lack of instagram on BlackBerry 10

9000 > 9800 > 9900 > Z10

with the Apollo client for Pandora, I've wondered for quite awhile why someone hadn't thought of the same type of work around for Instagram....weird name but good job! BlackBerry should hire developers who DO support us, and then fund their projects while flying a big middle finger towards Instacrap and Netdicks

Yup, this could force instagram to come onboard, then the developer will be asked to drop the app just like OpenWhatsapp. What ever, we are here to support lGrann. Go for it!!!!!! All the way.

I always give the guy full support till they give me a reason to doubt them. if you always doubt them from the beginning thats a little messed up

Where can I donate? Well done dev! We need more quality apps in BB World, let's bridge that gap!!!

Posted via CB10

Hate to be a wet blanket, but Instagram will kill their developer API key as this goes against their terms of service/use:

"You shall not:

Use Instagram APIs for any application that replicates or attempts to replace the essential user experience of Instagram.com or the Instagram iPhone App"

Read the thread they've allowed 7 different apps on windows phone, the app just can't use the instagram name. Let's research before we try spread something as fact

Posted via CB10 from my Z10

As someone who actually has a Windows Phone, uses Instance and a bunch of other instagram apps on WP, I can tell you that instagram wasn't deleting pics only uploaded from instance. This was happening because they changed some things with their API (it even says it in that article!). Also, instagram won't kill their developer API key because hes reverse engineering the official apps not using the public API. If this app gets enough attention, the only thing instagram will do is ask to test out the app before its published, just like they did with 6tag for Windows Phone. If you think anything I've said is a lie, you can ask the developerof 6tag via his Twitter (@RudyHuyn) and he let you know that all of this is true.

First off, it's bad for PR for Instagram/Facebook to admit their restricting open access to a small time third party upstart who wants to write a free client for an under served yet small demographic.

If the third party app ever gets real traction. They will kill it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow.

What happened to twitter's Instagram integration? Killed.

If this wasn't the case, BlackBerry would have written their own in-house version, like they did with Facebook, Twitter, Google Talk, etc

None of those app are written by their respective owners. But through strategic partnerships and use of sanctioned APIs.

You need the sanctioned API to upload photos. For viewing you can screen scrape through http.

Let's all get to get her and help find this guy. I am not sure how to reach out to him or how we should go about it. Can someone find if he has a PayPal account? Five bucks from each of us will show that we support these guys. Putting our money where our mouth is. He could be coding and working on other items but he #choseblackberry10

Posted via CB10

I am more than happy to put at least $5. And the funny thing is I'd hope this app gets better than Instagram with even more features just so that we can throw it in the face of Instagram.

Posted via CB10

I probably wont use it, and as much as I have been saying it is not "needed" I would certainly give $5.00 to the developer as well. Great idea.

Dev if you add video and the not included features I would put aside a 2.99 usd just for this app he deserves something for the efforts open a donation page you will definitely get some of my $$

Posted via CB10

Will keep my side load because I can watch videos......but will most definitely love if they add that capability to record and upload our own

Posted via CB10

Bring it on can't wait. Something is better than nothing. Plus no side loading Sweet!!!. I won't be picky but let's get it up and running Asap! Lol

Posted via CB10

All I know it that this guy app is going to blow da he'll up!!! Might go as the most download on the BB10...?

Posted via CB10

I'v actually given up on a native Instagram coming to BB10 and just content myself with sideloading. This is the best workaround I've heard ever!

To the developer of iGrann, keep up the good work. You probably do not know how much you've made lots of people happy and excited today. Thank you!

Posted via CB10

I hope this isn't another "deals for groupon" app failure. I have a feeling this won't be happening.

Posted via CB10

Props to the Dev! Thanks for supporting the BlackBerry community

Posted via CB10 from my Z10

Now I can get rid of the sideload, which has to be loaded twice anyway, ( two different versions, and don't delete either). Thanks.

Posted via CB10

I never use instagram before but I will download it when ready. Do your best dude, Instagram won't terminate your app. My girlfriend own a lumia and tease me with her itsdagram. It makes me sick. LoL

If this is free, I sure hope the Dev will take donations for his work.

If he does, I strongly suggest we all donate something. Even if you don't use it.

Posted via SmackBerry 10

Whoop! Can't wait! Filters would be cool but I can use z10 native ones for now or filters from another app save the picture, then use it in his app. Happy to pay for it too. Doing the happy dance now

Posted via CB10

I'm personally not an Instagram user. But for the dev's efforts, I will become a user of Instagram and his iGrann.

Also Tweeted Kevin about getting a "Donate" button for free app's.

We need something like 6tag on Windows Phone 8, it allows you to take advantage of the full suite of features and filters that the original Instagram app does

Posted via CB10

I love BlackBerry but not having certain mainstream native apps for social media being developed side by side with iOS and Android is symptomatic of the wider issues BlackBerry face. I long for the day that BlackBerry is mainstream again and it's heading in the right direction. Until then these apps will help. Keep up the good work

Posted via CB10

Well guys, we can use Photo Studio which has great filters meanwhile iGrann gets an update and add filters too, as iGrann will be native i'm sure there's gonna be an option from Photo Studio to 'share with' iGrann once the photo is already edited. I wish the camera app also gets more filters when 10.2 finally arrives...
OMG... this is exciting!!! I'm very happy for ourselves the BB10 family!

Posted via CB10

Even though Instagram is a free app, I'd pay money to support this dev. I use a sideloaded IG port. It's ok. But Crackberry Nation needs to support these devs to show these companies how great BB10 is to develop on. I hope we all download it whether you use IG or not!

Posted via CB10

In the meantime, we can use the BB10 filters and upload these to IG. Their quite good. Love the Sixties filter!

Posted via CB10

Tha's what I say, probably those Cam's filters will get better in the 10.2 and alsothe great filters available in Photo Studio....

As little as I can care about Instagram or an Instagram type app, I feel this fella deserves a Dev unit more than anyone at this time. If I had one I would send it.

Nice work kid. Get this out asap and let's put an end to the complaint that we haven't got Instagram.

Netflix will be your next challenge!

Posted via CB10

Well, sideload work well for me. If the developer is able to accomplish the list of "can not do" I'm willing to pay for the app.

It's a shame that we can't apply filters to the pictures but hey, let's be thankful about what we've got! When will this app be out?

Posted via CB10

Seeing ios7 version of updated ig on my friend's iPhone is blinding. Too bright. Hopefully the dev will consider to make this native have options for...'The Black Theme'

Posted via CB10

Why the name "iGrann"? This is not Apple it's BlackBerry. I think the name is stupid on this platform.

I gues it's to stand for IG the problem here is the little 'i' at the beginning... But although I would change it for BBgrann, believe me, my friend, we should be thankful no matter whatever name the app has...

It amazes me that one developer can code this yet it's so difficult for FB or Instagram to put this out themselves. Great job and will definitely donate!

I've been waiting for devs to rise up and help the BlackBerry community tell all those big names that consider the platform not worth their time to go **** themselves.

BlackBerry has gone above and beyond to get those names on board so there are no good reasons to not develop for us.

I can honestly say that with a full featured(i'm sure this will be eventually), compatible and NATIVE app like this one, I and most if not all the BlackBerry community would be willing to download and contribute. If the dev can't charge for the app let's put a donate link on CB.

This man deserves a medal!!!

Posted via CB10

Kudos Dev!! You are the best. Action speaks louder than words; BlackBerry management should emulate you rather than all talk but no action, lately.
Thanks again!!

Should be renamed to bbGram. Igrann sounds an iPhone app.

Posted via CB10 ~ visit my portrait channel C0011B779

This is exactly what BlackBerry needs to have done. If the major programmers won't develop for BlackBerry get a third party full app. Would love to see this happen for netfkux

Posted via CB10

This is the one app not having is hurting BlackBerry 10 so far It's nice to see something coming!!!
