How to use animated emoticons as your BBM avatar

BlackBerry Messenger 6.1 brought along some cool new features, one of which is the ability to use animated icons for your avatar. While you can download them at various places on the web, not many people know that your BlackBerry already has some animated emoticons waiting for you. You can easily choose one of the nine included icons to use as your own animated emoticon avatar.

  • In BBM press the Menu key then choose View My Profile
  • Press Menu again, then choose Change Display Picture
  • Scroll down and select Avatars
  • Choose one of the 9 emoticons to use as your avatar

The icons won't look animated at first, but if you select one you'll see a quick preview of it's animation. Choose one, save, and it will be set as your new BBM avatar. When your friends highligt your name in their contact list they'll see the animation.

^ you beat me to it. Go to that site they have tons of great avatars to select and they add more every couple of weeks.

I have BBM 6.1.0.71 but I don't see an Avatars folder. Is it on device memory or card? What level?

Not seeing on mine, either. I notice the pic above is an OS7 phone, will this work on 5 or 6?

Go to the site listed above. Find the avatar you like and save it to your phone. Then all you do is click on your profile picture and it will allow you to change it. The avatar you got from the site will be in your photo library (on my 9900).

The article says

That makes it sound like the OS creates a folder called Avatars. Is this something that I create myself and save those into it?
