How to install an Android app (APK) to a BlackBerry

If your BlackBerry Z10, Q10, Z30, Q5 or P'9982 has been updated to BlackBerry OS 10.2.1 or higher, you can now install Android apps directly onto the phone. Here's how!

BlackBerry 10.2.1 introduced the ability to install .APK files, which are the app files used in Android, directly to your phone. This throws the doors open to install a wide variety of Android apps on your BlackBerry 10 device, be it a Z10, Q10, Q5, Z30, or anything else. This used to be possible through a long, convoluted process, but it's much easier now. Basically, if you can't find an app in BlackBerry World, odds are there are other sources for your favorite app.

Step 1: Find your APK

We have a few sources you can count on

Step 2: Get the APK file on your BlackBerry

You can get an Android APK install file on your BlackBerry by visiting the source in your BlackBerry browser (which is the easiest option), e-mailing yourself the file, or moving the file directly from your computer to your phone by plugging them together with a USB cable.

Installing .APK files to BlackBerry

Step 3: Install the APK file from your BlackBerry

If you downloaded the APK from your browser, the Downloads window should have already popped up asking you where you want to save it and what the filename should be; just tap the file when it's done. If the download window isn't there, it's easy enough to get back up. Tap the overflow menu button in the bottom-right (three little dots), and tap Downloads.

If the file was moved to your phone in any other way, you can find it easily by tapping the magnifying glass icon from the home screen at the bottom in the middle and typing ".apk" in the search box at the top. Anything you've moved over should show up under the Documents and Files result. Just tap the one you want to install.

Your Android app should start installing after a short "Processing" indicator. Tap the Install button in the top right, and tap Accept on the pop-up window which informs you of the device permissions that are required for the app to run.

Extra information

The first time you install an .APK, you'll be prompted to turn off a safety setting which otherwise blocks installation of these files. The previous installation screen should return with a handy "Open" button replacing the "Install" button when it's done. At that point, the app will now show up alongside all of your other apps. Just swipe on the home screen from right to left a few times to find the icon and put it in whatever folder or home screen you like. Hold your finger on the icon for a moment to drag it around. Another thing you may want to do is hide the bar at the bottom of the screen. Just swipe down from the top when the app is open, and tap Hide bar.

Now, remember that there are no guarantees that these apps will function as advertised. BlackBerry does not run Android, it can just run Android apps. The Android app player in BlackBerry 10 is good, and should handle most of what you throw at it. Test things out and let us know what's working and what isn't in the comments! Having trouble installing something? You can ask for help in the comments too!

Dude, nice video, but really? How many people do ya think will have another phone as well?? Huh? C'mon! If you are going to make a video to show how to get Netflix, do it for people who have just one phone!!

Actually they both work. But only from the Web and not the CrackBerry app. Weird, I just figured this out.

Hi, I just updated and am trying to download and install apk files directly. The apk downloads fine but when I install the app it gets stuck on processing. Please help. Using q 10, software version 10.2.1.537

same version. same issue. and the previously installed android apps that were working perfectly fine like instagram, soundcloud, pintrest and whatnot stopped working.

I did a security erase for nothing, the problem still continue, lose all the free december apps.

I think maybe a security erase could solve the problem but no, still happend.

Telcel México, 10.2.1 on unlocked Int'l Z10. Pushed Jan. 28 OTA. Previously side-loaded apps close and otherwise no longer function. Can't install APKs. Hangs up for hours (let it run overnight) on "Processing". I've enabled the feature Settings>App Manager>Installing Apps> Allow Apps from Other Sources to be Installed>Yes. I've seen several other comments relating to this but no root cause/fix (assuming there is one). So, I'm not sure if I'm missing anything of if this is intentional on the part of the carrier/BB.

If your stuck at the processing screen running APK do the following IN ORDER :

1-wipe ur device from the settings in the phone
2-use blackberry link to reload your device
3-once your done. sign in with ur blackberry ID (BUT DONT RESTORE ANY BACKUP YET)
4-go to setting--software update to make sure ur still running the latest 10.2.1
5-go to settings--app manager -- installing apps -- turn allow apps to ON
6-REBOT

u should be able to install apks now.z

THIS WORKS FOR ME

Okay guys/gals, I got it working again!

What I did in order:

1. I downloaded the bars from @Dealz417 link: 10.2.1.1925 Upgrade Bars

2. Put phone in development mode from settings, then I opened the chrome app on my desktop (bb10/playbook app manager) to uninstall both android bars, easiest way I found this was to ctrl+f and type android.

3. When uninstallation is complete, grab both of the android files from the link above: they are called:
sys.android-10.2.1.108.bar
sys.android.shell-10.2.1.108.bar

and then drag these files into the top-right corner of the chrome app

4. Let the apps install

5. Reboot the phone by holding down the power button + volume up&down buttons.

6. Voila! The android apps should prompt for app permissions and then it should work!

All's well that ends well! Enjoy!

I had this same problem and tried many of the "fixes" posted on this forum to no avail. Including: Security Wipes, manually installing bar files (android and others), enabling external installs, rebooting, etc. I paid attention to the order things were done in. I had the radio turned off during OS install. I tried to glean from many posted fixes without success, UNTIL I found an App in Blackberry World in My World (it was an available app but had no icon on the main screen). The app was called "Android Runtime" I opened it and it showed a screen saying "Initializing" and then it went away. I ran Snap again and now I can download and install android apps.

I am running 1925 on an STL103 Z10. I used the files downloaded by Sachesi from Rogers 302/720. I opened the folder an let it install. As part of the process I had done a security wipe. This is less scary if you have a backup but all your apps (including paid) will show up anyway in Blackberry World and you can download them again. You will lose your settings if you don't have a backup. I also manually installed some of the bar files that had names like "android" but in the end none of it worked until I ran the above app. Note: you should enable "Allow Apps from Other Sources" but that setting alone did not solve any problems until I ran the "Android Runtime" app. There is no icon for this app. I found it in BlackBerry World as an available app. It is really easy to miss. I only ran it once and I have installed (and run) multiple android apps since. I suspect this app has its own bar file and perhaps it wasn't installed before. I don't know, but I have it now and it works (at least for me). It may have been due to a confluence of things that I did but hopefully someone else can build on what I did. I am not about to try to streamline the process into a set of 1,2,3. Take it for what it is worth. I am VERY happy now with 10.2.1 I love the picture based password unlock. It works sweet as long as you put your finger beside the number and not on it so that you can position it accurately. I can unlock first time 100% now and it is very quick to do - even in the middle of the night half asleep.

I can't uninstall the android apps! I tried in the BlackBerry way, the icon dissappear, but when I try to install it again, it says that the app is already there. And using BlackMart (android app) I managed to open the app that was supposed to be unistalled!

Anybody have the same issue?

Posted via CB10

Yep, this is one of the well-known shortcomings of this method. Both BlackBerry and Amazon are off the Google reservation, despite making use of Android. It means anything that needs Google credentials isn't going to work.

Much appreciated! I'm dying to get home and update. My boss for some reason won't let me leave to update then come back......

Posted via CB10

I tried to get Snapchat through one mobile but when I hit install it keeps saying there was an error parsing the package :( anyone know what's wrong?

Posted via CB10

Nobody talks about the " new" setting in the app manager -> allow installation from other appstores. (I know Google Play isn't covered that way). So what ist this switch about?

Posted via CB10

Change the setting under "Settings, App Manager, Installing Apps". Turn it on. If you don't, you won't be installing any APK files.

I used my Z10 to create this CrackBerry madness!

I am a longtime BlackBerry supporter, so what makes this so sad is that the apps are not made for BlackBerry. More and more of us will be switching to iOS or Android. So sad for BlackBerry.

Posted via CB10

Are you kidding? Can Android install both Android and iOS apps? Vice versa for iOS? You have a phone that can install both native BlackBerry 10 apps AND Android apps. Doesn't work the other way around. What you have is golden.

Can download and install APK files, but when I run it,it crash. Already uninstall and install it back but still the same. What should I do?

Sent via my Oreo Z10 BBM Channel C001BC43C

LOL, launch Google or your search engine of choice, type in "download instagram apk". Click a couple links and BOOM, install complete.

Posted via CB10

If your apk of choice is crashing, first restart your device using up down volume method. Try again. Did it work? Awesome. Did if fail? Try another version of the app. Sometimes an app simply won't work, lots of times it will work though. Keep trying.

Anyone out there that can help me with the inability to install APK files directly? I have tried almost everything but to no avail.

To clarify, I have already done the following:

Completely uninstalled my old unlocked Android runtime and Android apps before applying the update.
Did a battery pull and reboot
Allowed installation of outside apps by going to: Settings > App Manager > Installing Apps > Allow Apps from Other Sources to be Installed (ON)
Ensured that the app was not previously installed in any way.
Downloaded the APK file both directly to my device and onto my media card, tried installing from both of them to no avail.

It is just perpetually stuck on the Processing screen. Any ideas?

I am having the same issue as well. Can't figure out why. It almost makes the side loading process look easier than the direct install of the apk.

Posted via CB10

I had the same problem. I had side loaded an unlocked runtime previously and when I checked after the 10.2.1 update I found that it had not updated the runtime. I dug out the updated runtime and android shell files for the update (using Sachesi) and side loaded them onto the BB, then restarted. Everything is now working fine.

Hey guys,

I have solved this issue. Long story short, it looks as though I did not even receive an updated runtime upon the new OS install. I was running and uninstalled the 595 runtime before updating the OS assuming that I would get the new one no problem.

Not the case!

Review this thread: http://forums.crackberry.com/blackberry-10-os-f269/10-2-1-known-issues-8...

As it turns out, some people are missing a runtime all together. I was one of them. Using the links provided in that thread, I downloaded the two files: shell-10.2.1.108-nto+armle-v7+signed.bar and android-10.2.1.108-nto+armle-v7+signed.bar and loaded them using Sachies. I am now running APK files directly without problems.

Thanks. After doing a full backup, I did a security wipe, installed the two files over the old leaked runtime I had using the same side loading tool as for the bar files, followed by a reset. Then verifying if a BlackBerry World port would work I restored my data. Works like a charm now !

Posted via CB10

After doing this, i was advised by my friend to download and install an android port app in the appworld and run it (ex. flipboard). then, i just tried running again the APKs i downloaded using file manager. This solved the problem.

Yes. You need to Google search for sys.android 10.2.1.108 and sys.android.shell 10.2.1.108. Sideload both, hard reset using volume up and down at same time method.

Lol this is ridiculous, I have the same issue. I have the original OS etc (not used any leaked ones) on my z30, just downloaded the update, all excited that I can get android apps now, and not only do none of my old side loaded maps like Google maps not work anymore, but I can't even install any android apps because it's permanently stuck on 'processing' lol have they not tested this? Not sure what I am supposed to do now.

Followed the link to 1 mobile but nothing happens when I click on the download button, am I being stupid here?

Posted via CB10

I probably won't download android apps at least for a while, maybe when I start to get bored of the new os I will. I just can't wait for Verizon to get off it's bum and provide me with an update.

Keep The Faith  BlackBerry Q10 

I'm on Verizon and I got the update fine last night

VZW Z10 Where I get down >> ASCENDANT Music Channel C000B8970

seriously i've been the biggest blackberry defender and i work in the tech support of one of the largest Canadian telecom companies.. but if blackberry messed up this release and THIS RELEASE is all about android runtime, i will walk away from Blackberry and never look back

Music lovers such as myself - uninstall the native Slacker Radio app. Use Snap, download the latest version. Wow, what a slap in the face the native app was! Spotify is working perfectly as well through the same method.

Just wonder, there is an apk loader on the Amazon store site. This seems to obvious to work on a blackberry but is there a way for it to be used to install apps other than amazon app store apps? Wonder if anyone has tried?

Posted via CB10

i have a question , I just downloaded the 1Mobile Play store, everthing is okay
but I have an option toggle that states:
Installing Apps
Allow Apps from Other site sources to be installed ON/OFF
" when turned off you can only install from Blackberry world if On you can install from outside sources "
do I turn this " ON "

Hello. I've downloaded the apk file for Amazon but I'm stuck at "processing". So I restart my Z10 and tried again but still nothing. Then I thought maybe I should remove the android runtime I sideload previously together with all the android apps (Instagram etc. since they crash after the OS update so no points keeping them anyway I guess), so I did. I restart my phone and try again but it still stuck at "processing". Does anyone know the solution to this please???

Change the setting under "Settings, App Manager, Installing Apps". Turn it on. Same as above.

Thanks! But I've managed to get it running by sideloading the latest android runtime to my Z10. I delete the old ones and sideload the latest files and reboot my phone. It's working now.

Trying to run Chrome but it freezes upon launch. Haven't tried restarting the phone yet though to see if that helps the app "settle" in.

HBO GO and MAX GO apps working. Navy Federal CU app is also working for anyone who has an account with them and couldn't get it to work before. Instagram works, but someone already covered that.

Netflix up and running beautifully:) love this feature. Nobody can use the excuse that BlackBerry doesn't have enough apps available anymore!

I have Snap downloaded but I am unable to open Snap1_9_6_0.bar
I have my OS updated.
What do I need to do to let my phone open the .bar file?
Please Help

Should I use the updates suggested from 1 Mobile Market (for apps originally downloaded from BB World) ? To clarify, I originally installed Skype using BBW, but 1MM found an update. Should I use the 1MM suggested update? Thanks!

Snapchat installs, but then says I must install the latest updates to log in. Obviously I can't get it to update to the version it's directing me to on the Google Play store. :-(

I've been simply searching the apk file via Google on phone, downloading and installing. Both Netflix and Starbucks working flawlessly on my z10.

I received a message during the install of a couple of apps that I needed Google Services in order to run the apps. I deleted the apps. What does that message mean?

The safest way is to install the app on an android device, back it up and copy the backed up apk to your phone and install. It's worked great for me.

This is awsome!
I installed my favotite apps with the help of my old Android phone.
I backup my applications with app backup&resstore on my Android.
This software backup the apps(apk) on the sd card then copy them in my Z30.
They all work fine exept Firefox who crashed when launching it.

Prefer native or "Built for Blackberry" apps. Before use Instagram and Viber APK from 1mobile market. Now Instagram was deleted after Igrann installing. Soo only Viber from android mareket. Waiting for Viber for Blackberry ))) Keep moving Blackberry !!!

Redbox app does not work because of Google Play services requirement. Redbox Instant, however, works perfectly and is better all around.

I used my Z10 to create this CrackBerry madness!

So I have been waiting for the OS update thinking it will be a piece of cake to download almost all the android apps and what do I get after the update?
A big Nothing.
Just lengthy and difficult instructions telling me that if I ever manage to download an app it will most probably not work one way or another.
Very sorry guys. this is it for me. Bye bye Z10.

Hey man, why didnt you put Opera Mobile Market? they have a great store I used to download a ton of apps in my Z10.

Do you can say it does not work in BlackBerry Z10, but there's a trick a brazilian way that I discovered.. You change your device to Samsung Galaxy S4 and voilá.

This work for me, iwrote in other post

If I want the ability to install Android apps on my phone, I'd rather simply get an Android phone.

This Android nonsense from BlackBerry is the lazy way out. As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing better than having a native BlackBerry 10 experience.

Posted via the Android CrackBerry App!

This is totally not working for me. I have tried everything after the update to install Amazon App Store and 1Market, and these APKs will just not install. I did get Snap to install, however any app that I try to install will not install. I've tried Netflix, Candy Crush Saga, and Clash of Clans from the Snap App. I have Allow app installation from other sources enabled and I have factory restored several times to no avail. My device is Z10 running 10.2.1.537 and OS version is 10.2.1.1925. Any help would be much appreciated.

Installed SNAP as per previous CrackBerry guide and now harvesting a lot of Android apps which I previously hankered for as I am BlackBerry user until they are no more ( yep didt looked good a month ago') This give new life to my Z10. Today just saw a recorded segment of Fifth Gear auto show which hightlighted an app called DailyRoads Voyager which acts as a free in car video recorder and voila, searched for it at SNAP ,got it and now using it on my Z10.

IMO , for those who insist that we don't need Android apps on our BB, all I can say is ,just keep your head buried in the sand ! There are plenty of useful apps out there and now , we have the opportunity to use em without getting another device

As I hope to use Google Input method which is easy for me to sync with my computer Google Input method, after I installed Google Input method to my Q10, I opened it, next step is "Set up Google Pinyin Input", 1) Enable, and 2)Sellect, after I click the button of "Enable Google Pinyin Input", the next step is "Language and Input" under setting, but I can't find "Google Input method", I am appreciated your comments. By the way, I'm from China.

I'm able to download apps from Amazon store to my Q10 but the apps dont stay open, they exit out 5 seconds after opening. Any help please
Thanks

OK here comes the dumb question......sorry in advance.

I'm still using a BOLD 9900 but will probably upgrade to a Q device in the near term.

If I see an app at the bottom of a company's ad that has the Google Play logo does it mean it won't work on BB10 ? Do I HAVE TO go only to one of the (store) sources listed eg Amazon etc.

Does it also mean that it's unlikely that say my local (Australian) bank app and other corporates won't work because they don't have a BB app and the others are Android (via Google Play)and iOS ?

Right, so good work for sharing all these cool tips. I tried to get chrome browser for my Z10, it installed fine but will not open past the incomplete Google homepage. Anyone tried chrome on their BB10 handhelds yet?

Hello to all.

I already try to search everywere but i can´t find any particular user having my problem.

I have Os 10.2.1.2102.

I can install small android apps from Snap, 1mobile or appstore. But wen i try to install big games, like Need for speed or any big game, it only download a small amout of it, for install and after instalation, he try to conect to download the rest (the big amout of the file) and every single game say, can´t stablish conection or can´t find server, or need google acount, etc, and it won´t download the rest of the game so it can be played.

I have a google play acount, and all my emails on blackberry z10 are from google.

Does anyone know how to solve this? What i need to do more, or install more, so it can donwload the rest of the games ????

Best regards

I made an apk myself with Eclipse, and it runs fine in the simulator, API level 16. When installing the apk on a Z10 (10.2.1) and "Processing" starts, I immediately get a toast saying "Unable to install this app". What now?

Hi. I am running 10.2.1.2102 on a Q10. Stupid question: can the Q10 run "live" wallpaper? If you were to download a live wallpaper from the snap app, would it run on BB Q10? Or is it only able to run non live wallpaper. Also, same for ringtones/sms APK? If anyone could answer this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I've downloaded the spotify app and have an premium account with them. Bit my playlists wont stay downloaded! Every time I close the app the downloads are gone. I would be glad to get some help. Cheers

I can't download the flightaware app. I show as being registered in googleplay on my z10, and also on my computer but keep getting a message that 'you don't have any devices'.

My Cast fans will be quite happy it works well!!! I have others that work will test adblocker shortly. This is fantastic!

OK Snap Dragon BatteryGuru can see apps 3rd Android apps party and optimize the refreshing of those apps I don't think it can control the data (Not sure if it's worth the space and or what little CPU it uses that is unless you use social apps a lot) We gotta start calling these phones what they really are! Hybrids! That should raise quite a few eyebrows when some iphone and or Android user goes starts bragging about how many apps he can download.

OK I'm hitt'n the sack, I think we may need an android task killer to kill only the Android apps they are eating battery power, I will uninstall the one for that app store 1Mobile market. The BB CPU/Task killer can see it from I can tell in the foreground but not the backend of things. Good luck and have fun I sure as heck am! Oh one more thing AppMonster can send the apps to your phone by way of email from your old Android but not protected apps as far as I can tell I had some backed up tht were not but they may have been there from another backup app. You can also use the file app on Android but its a pain in the tail to find em they are listed as .com etc and trying to figure out the name causes confusion but it can be done.
I'm pooped!

Alright boys and girls just found out that I or we may end up hitting a wall and that wall is too many apps that run in memory and from what I have see you may need to keep em down so that only 50% or less average memory is running, No not just CPU alone should be watched but memory too.
I had a boatload for a minute too! All android apps will talk to each other but BlackBerry apps will not talk or listen to them it seems.
Some may run in the background I'm still waiting for WeatherBug to get its chance to work here in Texas when this storm comes through later today or tomorrow. And yes I got the original APK with that has the weather man segement just like on TV.
Tried to install the lightning alert for MYCast but because it has no icon BB said nope can't come in the door, Which I should also mention that you install an app that has a advertising pay to go away APK it will not install because it has no icon and unless you modify the APK to refuse all connections you will see ads I did find an app that don't crash it's called App Shield I had another will see if I can get it to work that spikes just the ads in apps but it crashes and the dev went away and so its only good for Andriod app on Andriod phones only and so pick out the cream of the crop and let the rest of us know what you know hopefull BlackBerry won't shoot out any updates that mess us up we are already on a thin line and wading in new waters where few would dare go in terms of great apps that work well as well as working with a new cell phone system that is truly great.

Hi, I downloaded the smartwatch apps from apk train website but are not able to install . Pls advise if there are any steps I missed ?

Just got my new Z30, followed prompt immediately to upgrade to os 10.2.1.2102, used app settings to allow apk install, installed Wunderlist2 task manager and all seems to work fine so far. Early days, but I guess I got lucky!

I have installed some android app on my BlackBerry z10 but now if I try to install any android app it shows the message "unable to open ngpay.apk" how can I solve this problem I have also turned on resources from outside the blackberry world

hiya
