How to get Android apps on BlackBerry from the Amazon Appstore

Amazon offers lots of great free and paid Android apps which can run on your BlackBerry Z10, Q10, Q5 or Z30 - here's how to get started!

The Amazon Appstore promises to be a premiere source for Android apps on BlackBerry, and odds are you want it now that it's so easy to install Android apps. In addition to hosting a lot of content that isn't available in BlackBerry World, Amazon has the added bonus of offering a free app every day. If you want to get started, just follow the three easy steps below.

Step 1: Download and install the Amazon Appstore

Go to the Amazon Appstore download page in your BlackBerry browser (http://www.amazon.com/getappstore). Tap the "Download the Amazon Appstore" button. The Downloads window should pop up asking you where you want to save it and what the filename should be; just tap Save in the top-right, then tap the file when it's done downloading. If the download window isn't there, tap the overflow menu button in the bottom-right (three little dots), and tap Downloads.

The Appstore should start installing after a short "Processing" indicator. Tap the Install button in the top right, and tap Accept on the pop-up window which informs you of the device permissions that are required for the app to run.

Step 2: Run and log in to the Amazon Appstore

Find the Amazon Appstore icon on one of your home screens and tap it, or simply tap the magnifying glass icon from the home screen at the bottom in the middle and type "Appstore" in the search box at the top. Tap the Appstore icon in the search results.

Enter your Amazon e-mail and password, and tap the "Sign in with my Amazon account" button. If you don't have an Amazon account, tap the "Create account" button and follow the steps.

Step 3: Download and install Android apps

From the Appstore home screen, you can swipe up and down to view featured and recommended apps, tap the magnifying glass in the top-right to search for something specific, or tap the menu button in the top left (three dots) to browse categories.

When you tap on an app you want, tap the button in the top right of the entry listing the price of the app. If it's a paid app, you'll need to tap the button again to confirm the purchase before the download begins.

That's it!

Enjoy everything the Amazon Appstore has to offer, but keep in mind that BlackBerry isn't officially support. Many apps will work fine, but some others won't. Proceed with caution and let us know about your experience with the Amazon Appstore on BlackBerry in the comments!

The official version and the latest leak are pretty much the same. If you can't wait, I'd suggest going that route. That's what I've been running for a while.

I read somewhere today that T-Mobile USA won't be rolling 10.2.1 out till mid -February. (apparently T-Mobile Europe released it today though.)

According to this list on BerryReview T-Mobile UK, USA, Hungary and Germany rolled it out today so maybe there is still hope.

1. Are you on 10.2.1?
2. If yes, go to settings / app manager / installing apps and make sure it is checked on.

For anyone else experiencing this, I had the same problem but instead of using the link in this "how to", I had to long press on the link until the copy feature came up, then I hit copy, manually opened my BB browser and long pressed again into the address bar until the paste icon appeared and whala!, it worked like a charm. After being notified that I needed to change my settings to allow non BB world apps, I hit the settings link and switched from no to yes and it installed perfectly.

I had that turned on already, None of my android based apps are working, even the ones from Blackberry World like Skype, ebay, flipboard, kobo.. reinstalling app didn't work. I tried putting on a different runtime and that didn't work either.. Restoring the phone now to see if something just got corrupted as some things were acting weird, wasn't reading my sd card right either

jojo beaconsfield

Proceed with caution,I love that,Thanks

Andrei Vesselovski

Just realised how outdated and aged Android apps look and feel compare to BlackBerry native. And that I don't need _more_ apps. Another funny thing is that media reporting on the update focusing on FM-tuner, rather than the fact that there is no app gap.

Posted via CB10

adam_h

There is still a big app gap. I installed the Amazon app store and have yet to find an app that actually works properly. My sample size is admittedly small, but I'm not all that optimistic about the new Android runtime being all that useful except for official Android ports.

Posted via CB10

HaberNik

Hmm, I have had some not work for me, but most do just fine. The ones that everyone always roll out as an examples of why not to get a BlackBerry like instagram and Netflix worked perfectly on my z30.

Tapped and flicked from my BlackBerry Z30!

HaberNik

I should add I have deleted most apps that I downloaded because in the end, I really don't need them and what's with not being able to say no to the permissions??? Why do we want so badly to give up all this personal info. Yikes!

Tapped and flicked from my BlackBerry Z30!

THBW

No kidding. Anything that requires contacts, GPS information etc, I just turn off. If the App doesn't run, well then I don't need it and it gets deleted. Further, I have completely eliminated any and all use of Google products as it is clear that they have a very close working relationship with the NSA. Sorta of creepy.

Advantage from Amazon App Store is they look over the apps before approved in the App store. 1mobile and Google Play Store do not as far as I know. I could be wrong but that's what I heard.

No snapchat? This android app thing is really starting to lose its luster...

Martin Green

Found it on 1Mobile in about 5 seconds.

Posted via CB10

EBTTReal_KS

I downloaded it from there but have had no luck at all installing Snapchat. I keep getting "There was a problem parsing the package." Whatever that means.

Martin Green

I already had SnapChat installed but I did it again and something has changed from.a month ago when I last downloaded it. The APK is supposed to be about 2MB but 1Mobile is only listing it as 168 bytes and when you download it file manager shows it as 1KB. I still have the good APK and it installs fine in 10.2.1 without sideloading, but the one currently available on 1Mobile is no good.

Posted via CB10

Martin Green

I see that the current version is supposed to be 7.4 MB, but only 168B is downloading right now.

Posted via CB10

Martin Green

Ok very strange, it looks like the link 1Mobile uses to download SnapChat is broken. Instead of downloading the correct APK it instead downloads an HTML file (with APK extension) that contains the following:

<html>
<head><title>404 Not Found</title></head>
<body bgcolor="white">
<center><h1>404 Not Found</h1></center>
<hr><center>nginx/1.2.5</center>
</body>
</html>

Martin Green

UPDATE: Just tried downloading SnapChat with the full browser from APK Train and the result was the same. Seems like all the links to SnapChat are broken right now, not just 1Mobile.

Snap downloads from Google Play. How much more real do you want?

BobPepe

I don't want to sound stupid... but what is SNAP??? Is it a app from BBW or what???

green_ember

There is a post in the forums with a download link. The app gives you direct search and download from Google Play. It used to require an ID from an Android device, but now it makes its own. You'll have to sign in with a Google account which means providing the app with your password. To get around that, I made a separate account on Google just for use with Snap. It doesn't track updates for you, but that's the only downside I've come across

aloushka37

Use a different way to download

Tatwi

Do android apps still force location services to run in the background even though it is disabled (and the toggle remains disabled in the settings)?

Magnificently composed using CB10 on my BB Z10!

Tatwi

To answer my own question, after downloading the 17mb update to go from the leak to the current version, Location Services now runs in the background at all times even when it is turned off in the settings. And that is without any Android apps installed and after rebooting.

OK, so at this point we have no way to know if apps are spying on our activities despite denying that option and turning off location services.

Any chance we can get an answer from BlackBerry on this? Where would one even ask?

Magnificently composed using CB10 on my BB Z10!

green_ember

When I turn off location services and open Google Maps, it tells me I need to enable them. Not sure why it's any different for you

Posted via CB10

Draggy38

Do you have to sideloaded 1mobile? Or is there a browser download like Amazon?

Posted via CB10

GeneralHerzog

So far, I'm leaning towards 1mobile. I really like the ease of use and the update notifications.

qpro

True, but it also detects upgrades from Android ports that were installed via Blackberry World, but then you have to uninstall those ones first.

Martin Green

If the Android versions run fine on 10.2.1 there is no practical reason anymore to use the ported ones from BlackBerry World since those are usually a few versions behind the true Android ones. I have been running a sideload of Waze for months because it has much better features than the version on BlackBerry World.

danfrancisco

Loving it but... how do you go "back"? Since these are Android apps, there's no swipe gesture integration in the UI. And since I'm using a Z30 there's not "back" button! How do I go back without having to hit the Home button and start all over?

Martin Green

I guess you haven't ever used a sideloaded Android app before. There is indeed a "back" gesture. Swipe diagonally upward from the bottom-right corner of your screen (at about 15-20 degrees). Alternately, drag the app screen downward from the top and tap "Show Bar", but this will eat up a little of your screen real estate.

Posted via CB10

Martin Green

I should point out that this is a BB10 gesture that has been around forever when running an Android app. So many people didn't know it however that BlackBerry introduced the "back" action bar with 10.2 (IIRC), then after an outcry from everyone who knew the gesture and didn't like losing screen space they made it optional in a later release.

BobPepe

I'm in the US and I can't get it to load either..

Martin Green

Ever since 10.2 I have had to sideload a very old version of Netflix. Newer versions worked fine until you wanted to stream the show, then just froze. With 10.2.1 I deleted the old version and loaded the latest off 1Mobile and it works PERFECTLY!

This is pretty brilliant. Would have been really nice if BlackBerry has this functionality out of the gate with BB10 launching. Might have helped spur sales of some more handset because the so called "App Gap" would have been virtually non-existant!

Better late than never though. It's pretty cool stuff.

Question is: is 1Mobile safe? Where do the APKs 1Mobile has come from? Are they straight from Google Play or can they be uploaded by anyone off the internet? Who runs 1Mobile?

Same question goes for MOBOGENIE, aptoide, and all the other random APK stores people are using.

I've heard people say that when they compared an app taken from Google Play and the exact app (same version etc...) taken from 1Mobile, the file sizes were different. Why would 1Mobile APK not be identical to the one from Google Play? I don't know if this is true with all 1Mobile apps but it seems odd...

This is very worrisome. I will be sticking to Amazon and Google Play (via Snap).

Martin Green

1Mobile seems to be well respected and many prominent developers post to 1Mobile at the same time they do to GPlay and Amazon.

As for MOBOGENIE many many reports online of it behaving like a virus such as bypassing firewalls without permission and having rootkit capabilities. Do a Google search on "MOBOGENIE virus" to see what I mean.

Many of the APK downloader tools out there are just a proxy for GPlay and as such require you to provide them with your Google log in credentials. I don't know about you but I'm not willing to give that up to a service I don't really know.

Posted via CB10

NOT happy! I downloaded 10.2.1 today which went without a hitch. After reading how I could download android apps I installed 1mobile. This detected that I had six updates for android ports that I had bought from Blackberry World. I have not side loaded any apps. I downloaded the updates but it said I would have to delete the original and then install the android version. I did this for one app but this was the free version and had ads. It didn't seem too different from the BlackBerry version so deleted this and reinstalled the original. Which then asked me to pay £1.50. Which I did as I needed it. I deleted the 1mobile app and run a MaxSecure virus scan on my phone. After 4 hours 50 minutes it has detected 28 threats and is only two thirds of the way through the scan. I'm going to have to leave it running all night! I've never had a threat detected before. I will not be loading any android apps unless through Blackberry World. So so disappointed!

Wow this is amazing and very unexpected. It's a bit sluggish but better than nothing.

So I think I've seen only one other person that is stuck on the initializing app store screen when we launch the Amazon App Store. Is there something either one of us is missing in terms of setting up the phone or app correctly?

drfever

I can't find instagram there.. anyone have luck finding it in the Amazon store?

Posted via CB10

Martin Green

Neither Instagram nor SnapChat are on Amazon but they are both on 1Mobile, although 1Mobile is not serving up the SnapChat APK properly right now. Looks like the link 1Mobile is using for the download is broken.

App store keeps crashing...any suggestions?

Thanks Simon. I can't believe how easy that was. It took me about 7 minutes from the start of your instructions to having Netflix working fine on my Z10. The only thing that confuses me is how they made this happen? Great day for BlackBerry 10. Thanks again.

What's the difference between the apps in the Amazon store and the Google play? Are they the same version?

Posted via CB10

Martin Green

Not necessarily. Amazon often has slightly older releases, even for major apps. My experience for the past month however is that 1Mobile seems to be at the latest revision for everything I've tried.

I am having same trouble.. all that I try doesn't matter im always stuck on processing page. I'm on a Q10.

2-use blackberry link to reload your device (imp)
3-once your done. sign in with ur blackberry ID (BUT DONT RESTORE ANY BACKUP YET)
4-go to setting--software update to make sure ur still running the latest 10.2.1

Mate no one wants to wipe their device after updating to 10.2.1

By any chance, anyone can confirm if the store also has regional restrictions? i mean apps available in Europe but not in the Middle East? of course aside from Netflix, Hulu, ... etc

tg1

So far very amazing. Easily installed Amazon app and then downloaded my first app. So nice to not have to 'side load '. This is awesome BlackBerry. Not a fan of non-native apps but until BlackBerry is back on top- I guess I have to make a few sacrifices.

I don't it. Can someone show me how to get android apps thru amazon app stores. Somehow when I press the yellow bar to do step1 "download" it stops there...

Posted via CB10

Real Estate Appraiser

You can download amazon because you have pop ups off or are trying to access it within the crackberry app. Change setting in crackberry app to open links in browser or cut and past link into browser.

This will complete what blackberry 10 needs to survive! Let's just hope their marketing team uses this new option to get the blackberry name back on top!

Posted via CB10

Not sure if it has been mentioned but I would suggest 1Mobile over Amazon. I've downloaded apps from Amazon that haven't worked, the same apps from 1Mobile do. Also Amazon doesn't seem to have the same amount of apps.

Hi,
I just loaded this and then downloaded Viber and it is all working well.
Thanks very much for the article and thank you Amazon :-)

g2kott

So I installed the amazon and 1mobile app sites and worked well. Loaded candy crush saga and it works very well even syncing with my Facebook game. Also loaded micoach app from 1mobile. Also downloaded golflogix from amazon and it looks great (won't know how it works until the snow goes away). A few cautionary notes I learned about the hard way :
1. Don't try to install an app that already is installed through BlackBerry app store, it caused my Amazon store to crash requiring a delete and reinstall. I suggest if you want to try the android version, delete first then install. Tried this but the app looks the same and loaded the info I had on the BlackBerry loaded app so I don't know if it revwrted back or the apps were the same version (both were android versions).
2. 1 mobile will provide updates to all android (non BlackBerry native) apps regardless of where you downloaded from. I get notifications whenever it finds updates. I forgot that I installed sugar crush from amazon and when I tried to upgrade from 1mobile it didn't work anymore requiring a new install. Thank god I didn't touch my BlackBerry app downloads.

Otherwise everything so far runs smooth and isn't very complicated nor time consuming. Now to remember all those apps I wanted but couldn't get.

Can't believe how easy that was! Now I can download all these Android apps without sideloading, how handy is that? Love it.

Can't get past the processing screen on either Amazon or 1Mobile. AND I'M NOT WIPING MY DEVICE. No one else with this problem should have to wipe either

Posted via CB10

For those who can't install, don't use the link from Crackberry. I was doing that and the app would never download; the bar would appear and disappear in seconds. I just googled the app and downloaded from the site, no link from this forum. I haven't tried to install other apps yet but at least I'm one step closer

Posted via CB10

Awesome! Just downloaded it and everything works flawlessly

Are the apps safe coming from snap, 1mobile market and the amazon store??

Don't want to find out later that we gave up on security for android apps and that NSA now have our bowel movements on file.

What a bout the disclaimer from Amazon app store, will it screw up mt bb10 if i download the amazon app?

Does this not work for people without the latest update? Because I just click it and nothing happens whatsoever, I've checked downloads and everything. Frustrated!

Amazon app store is for limited number of countries. Most countries where BlackBerry still has some following are not supported.

Posted via CB10

It said 'Download Complete,' but when I try to open it, an error message comes out that says, "Unable to open file." What am I doing wrong? The same thing happened with 1MobileMarket. Ugh!

Exactly... Same thing happened too me

Just installed Amazon and downloaded/installed Netflix. Easy peasy and works like a charm. Great job, thanks for the instructions!

Oloyejawnson

I keep getting a prompt to check me country settings & I've done all necessary with billing address and payment method. Is Nigeria nor UK address not supported 'cos I've tried both?

PGC1990

Just download ESV Bible app. Works fine (a tiny bit of lag). Great to have this, as its not on blackberry app store.

I'm experiencing a problem with the Amazon App, I can download any app in the store, trying to launch that app is the problem. I launch the app, 5-10 seconds after launch it closes out automatically. Does anybody have an idea on how to prevent this from happening again? Thanks
