Gowalla launches BlackBerry beta to take on Foursquare in the BlackBerry realm

We've known for a while that Gowalla was ramping up their efforts for the BlackBerry platform. Although, that information was based strictly on it being an eventual web app. Looks like things have changed in that area. Considering the war that is waging between Gowalla and Foursquare a dedicated BlackBerry app is certainly needed if they want to capture BlackBerry users. The Gowalla BlackBerry beta is now available for download via the Gowalla website. If location based services are your thing, check it out.

The big let down with gowalla is that anyone with a blackberry that doesn't have GPS won't be able to use it as you have to be at the exact location that the first created user created the spot (which other non GPS phones can not do, only the closest mast), sounds like a way of preventing cheating but it also limits people who don't use GPS from using the service, foursquare does let you use it without GPS and I've never had a problem.

Does this work for everyone anywhere or for US users only? I'm asking as I'm a Foursquare user and happy with what is available from them and not planning to switch unless its worth in. Being non-GPS is really negative as I'm outside the country and roaming now using free wifi which works on Foursquare and saves me money on data charges. Now that's a +ve thing for Foursquare!

Apparently, the app works on every BB model EXCEPT for the Storm. It surely doesn't work on my Storm 2 9550. The login screen doesn't allow for typing, and the keyboard just stays up but doesn't type anything.

Oh, well. At least Foursquare has got it right.

amirk

FunkyDog - it does work outside US

hankychief - have you disabled compatibility mode? I do the thing for my 9500 and it works fine.

Not a lot of people know that Yahoo recently acquired Indonesian social site of Koprol (www.koprol.com). It has also BlackBerry version.
Try it out!...

sjafri

I don't know that yahoo acquired koprol
last time I log on to koprol even the blackberry client not ready yet.
Well I think I will used koprol again.

demeanor76

I'm using it. It's way so much fun than other geo-tag games ;)

yoga Wibowo

Have you tried Koprol? Feel it! Choose it !

FunkyDog

Foursquare rocks. That's my final verdict. I'm sticking to it.

Erievon

I have tried both, I much prefer foursquare. And Hankychief, turn off compatibility mode, I had the same problem.

Sorry Gowalla, but Foursquare is just the best.

its all about android phones fuck every other phone. i use to to have a lame bb but i am now a droid owner and happy about it. i'll put my droid up against your bb any time and watch me utterly destroy you lol.

i know this is wackberry.com but i don't give a fuck, my only reason for coming here is to laugh at you dumb ass bb users and talk shit about how much better android phones are lol. i will continue to come here and preach the word of android simply because i can and because i know you all hate that lol.

but the truth is the truth, get a android and you'll forget all about a bb. the list of things androids can do that a bb can't is just shamefull, it use to be cool to have a bb now its just sad lol. i know some people have to have a bb, their job requires it but if you're not one of those persons and you have a bb then you're a clown.

the droid alone is better than every single bb out and lets not even talk about the nexus 1, droid incredible or the new evo 4g and the list is growing. just wait until you see the line up of phones that android are getting ready to release, its going to blow your mind.

R.I.P RIM and iphone, its a new king in town lol. p.s. im aware of my typos and poor grammar but this is a commet on a internet website and not a college essay, im not being graded on this so spare me the various "you have poor grammar comments" android is the best, what else can i say? haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

go here to check out the top 10 smartphones of 2010 and this list is up to date blackberry does make an appearance at number 7 but the top 4 are androids with the iphone sitting in the 5th spot and 6 of the overall 10 are androids

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/collection/1671/top_10_cell_phones.html

1. HTC Droid Incredible (ANDROID)
The HTC Incredible is one of the most impressive Android phones available with a gorgeous display, slick user interface, and lightning-fast processor.

2. HTC EVO 4G (ANDROID)
The speedy HTC EVO 4G packs in some powerful specs and a variety of multimedia features into a stylish, minimalist design, but not everybody will get to enjoy one of its best features--4G connectivity.

3. Google Nexus One (ANDROID)
The Google Nexus One impresses with a stunning AMOLED display, speedy performance, and cool tweaks to the Android OS; but some network issues prevent it from being a superphone.

4. Motorola Droid (ANDROID)
The first Android 2.0 phone impresses with a strong suite of Web features and a stunning 3.7-inch display, but some users might have trouble with the shallow keyboard.

5. Apple 32GB iPhone 3GS
Performance enhancements distinguish the otherwise evolutionary step-up iPhone 3GS from its previous iterations.

6. Motorola Cliq (ANDROID)
The beautifully designed Motorola Cliq is a social butterfly's dream phone, but others may find the MotoBlur user interface overwhelming.

7. BlackBerry Bold 9700
The best BlackBerry available, the Bold 9700 packs a multitude of features into a sophisticated, slimmed-down design.

8. Palm Pre Plus
With expanded memory and new software capabilities, the Pre Plus is definitely an improvement over its predecessor, but it still has some quirks.

9. Palm Pre
The Pre's webOS software is touch-friendly and fun, but the cramped QWERTY keyboard detracts from the phone's usability.

10. Samsung Behold II (ANDROID)
With a gorgeous AMOLED display and an excellent camera, the pricey Samsung Behold II will appeal to multimedia junkies with deep pockets.

its fun to come are and tell the truth about android being better then bb. you won't see a bb user/owner in the android forums talking about "how much greater black berrys are then droids" because that's not true and everybody knows it and if someone actually did that they would look extremely stupid. i'm not talking out of my ass here, i'm a ex-blackberry owner i use to have a storm so i know the differences between the 2 and the differences GREATLY favor android. i promise, if you switch from a bb to an android you WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED, its a whole new and better experience.

i know this is wackberry.com but i don't give a fuck, my only reason for coming here is to laugh at you dumb ass bb users and talk shit about how much better android phones are lol. i will continue to come here and preach the word of android simply because i can and because i know you all hate that lol.

BONER STABONE

app doesnt seem to be working on my bold 9700.
when i click on check in, it shows a list of nearest spots that i am near.

i find the place i am located at, on the list.

click on it and all it does is show a list of people that have checked in at the location.

it wont check me in.

i check my activities and nothing.

blured2000

At every startup it tells me a new version(v.80) is available and then opens the browser to the same version(v.08) I already have.

I have a blackberry bold 9000 and cannot create a new spot using the mobile site (using the bb browser or bolt or opera mini), the sub category drop-down never appears and the site wont let you create a spot without a sub category... in the gowalla app you don't even have the option to create a spot;

no mention of items anywhere!

at 8:46am this morning from a hidden IP address Gowalla sent out invites to all of my contacts including my other email addresses. I specifically denied the request when i signed up to send out invites. I will never use it just for that reason let alone the fact that it doesn't even work. Gmail contacted me and requested that i change my password so i did. Don't trust this application, its bad news.
