Google Talk for BlackBerry 10 gets updated with a dark theme plus more

By James Richardson on 28 Oct 2013 05:17 pm EDT

Since BBM went cross platform I'm sure the amount of people using Google Talk has shrunk. However if you are a user, you'll want to pick up the latest BlackBerry 10 update which adds BlackBerry 10.2 support.

Although the amount of new changes are not huge, it's great to see the dark theme introduced to save some battery life. With the dark theme already available for BBM, contacts and calendar lets hope BlackBerry continue this trend for their native applications.

New features in version

  • Bug Fixes
  • Support for instant previews and direct actions for 10.2 supported devices
  • Landscape support
  • Ability to switch between light and dark theme.

Google Talk for BlackBerry 10 gets updated with a dark theme plus more

Hopefully it stops the issue I was having where it would disconnect and not reconnect when switching wifi networks, or from wifi to mobile data.

Having to force close it constantly was getting annoying.

"In vino veritas, in aqua sanitas."

Doesn't seem to be available for the Z30. I get the message "Not available for this device. "

Still, it does mean I have an excuse to get everyone on BBM.

Why? google talk?
Who uses it?
(Likely there will be a lot of folk who say "it's me!". Congradulations)

I use if to talk to my sister in another city. She has an android and mainly uses Voxer or whatever that voice App is.

Did I win anything?

Are you serious?

Google Talk (now Google Hangouts) is more widespread than BBM. Yes, BBM has finally gone cross platform, and it's nice there's now 10million more BBM users than there were before, but Google Talk/Hangouts has been very popular ever since they introduced it because it's part of Gmail. That means every user of web Gmail is on Hangouts/Talk UNLESS they explicitly turned it off.

The most popular IM protocol amongst my friends is Facebook and Google Talk/Hangouts.

I just wish they'd make a full blown version of Hangouts for BlackBerry 10. While Talk has served me for years (on my laptop that is) I want to have Hangouts on my phone now.

You must be kidding me. I don't know of a single person who uses Hangouts. Also, if you look at the ratings on Android, it's not a well done app.

Just because you do not know people who use Google Hangouts does not mean it is not popular. My office and a large portion of my friends and business acquaintances use Hangouts on a daily basis. Also, because Google announced today that Hangouts now incorporates SMS, it may very well be a contender to start taking over as people's default messaging app across the iOS (less likely) and Android (more likely) platforms. Hopefully Blackberry regains some traction and Google will create a Hangouts app for them as well.

Perhaps the arrival of BBM as a new arrival to the communication scheme is good.
BBM vs the many contenders like Hangouts vs ya-da-ya-da.

There is going to be a shake-out much like Acrobat becoming the de-facto document sharing method.

In the end the main thing will be which company is able to make enough money on their way to dominate the market.

We still have a long way to go (in current tech that means less than five years) before the next pony comes along.

I find that Google Talk has become unreliable since my friends updated to Hangouts on their Android devices. I assume this doesn't actually address that transition. But with BBM out now I can try to get them to switch and it becomes a non issue.

Seems to fix the logout issue (at least for a few hours it has), but on the Z10, I can't seem to find a way to enable instant previews. Running

Posted via CB10

Same here, no instant previews. Will try a fresh app reinstall once the announced BlackBerry World update has completed.

Posted via CB10

Happy to stick with my secure BBM. I don't think BlackBerry is monitoring my messages to to try and sell me something.

Posted via CB10

I have no problems with ads. Maybe if there were ads BB would could actually earn some money.

stupid ques... where is dark theme setting for bmm... google talk is in settings as expected but cant find for bbm...

Posted via CB10

Are you running the BBM version with beta BBM Channels? If so, I don't think there is a currently an option to select the dark theme.

Posted via CB10

When in BBM...Settings» Visual Theme» drop down menu...choose between light and dark theme. I'm not using channels atm.

Not using it now that bbm is cross platform. I'll keep it on my phone in case any of my contacts are WP users. But I'm bbm all the way (almost).

Amen to that - NSA can hack anything, but I'm not going to leave the keys in the car to make it easy to steal it. I'm in the US and distance myself from Google free stuff even if it is for "ad" purposes only.

I have seen where my government has gone in the past 5 years and think I trust the Canucks a little more at this point in history.

Funny how all the messaging apps are releasing updates now that BBM has gone cross platform. I hope BlackBerry keeps the updates coming for BBM.
Competition is always a good thing

Except the gtalk and yahoo are coded by BlackBerry so... maybe they finally got some time off from fixing cross-platform BBM... lol

Posted via CB10

Not true for Skype Viber WhatsApp and BeChat...didn't know BlackBerry did Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk...if so that explains those ones

Posted via CB10

Never used this app... always BBM or WhatsApp... and my WhatsApp usage has shrunk considerably since BBM 4ALL...

Posted via CB10

How come it still doesn't support two step authentication?!
The need to add this as a manage app password is annoying!

Same problem here. It doesn't work with Google 2 step authentication.

Since BBM went cross-platform, I am using BBM more and Google Talk less, but I still use GTalk a lot since I use Google Apps for Business. Thanks for the update!

I'm thinking of using google apps for business. What has been your experience with it? My use case is a small one person startup. Thank you

Google Apps for Business is great, especially if you like using Gmail and Google Calendar. I've been using it for years. I have a small law office, and it's perfect for me. Your other option would be Office365. If your prefer to use Outlook for email, then Office365 is the way to go, in my opinion.

Dang, I've been waiting for the z30 to drop but everytime I see somebody's Q10 in a blog photo like this it makes me second-guess myself . . .

This is a great update. The dark theme looks great on my Z10.

Hopefully it will be possible to implement conversation sync in a future update as I use Google talk/hangouts on multiple platforms.

What the heck is Google Talk? Serious question. I know Google Hangouts, but what is Google Talk?

Well, according to Blackberry World, it's the actual name of the app. Google Hangouts used to be called Google Talk, until very recently. I imagine that since Blackberry develops the app, and it's not a full-blown "Hangouts" app, they continue to use the Google Talk name to more accurately describe it's IM function, since it does not have video or voice capabilities, similar to Hangouts.

It's only going to get worse. BBM all the way!

Posted via the best phone ever. The white Z10.

Let's get people to stop using Google services so their revenue can go down abit,
They are too big of a monster company.
We need to level the playing field abit, too big the company more greedy the company like Walmart.
Let's try to use other services to help more players in the market.

White Rogers Z10 10.2 Dark Theme

I was just about to say look at all these devs scrambling to improve their apps in response to the BBM release, then I realized that BlackBerry was the developer so never mind :p

Has anyone else got this spam!!! I guess some people fall for anything...

I'm sitting in a coffee shop and I'm surrounded by BlackBerry phones, mostly Z10's and Q10's...uhh this is a sight to see...and at the table in from of me one guy with a Z10 is showing his friend who had a Galaxy S4 how ti download BBM...always nice to see friends helping friends..LOL..Oh yeah and he is using the Crackberry site for instructions...

So there you go, something more positive than the usual...

Posted via CB10

you are in another galaxy?
lol don't get me wrong, I'm BB all the way
but, where I live the only BB I see are mine and wife :D
but that's ok, it make us different, apart of the masses,

Too bad I wants no part of Google, I use them when I have to that's it.

Photos captured using BlackBerry devices - C00016D81

I uninstalled Google talk...almost never used it. From what I see, it isn't even a Google app, rather than one made by BlackBerry. Let Google make their own native BlackBerry apps.

Posted via CB10

The app is the worst I have ever used. Keeps signing out intermittently. The gtalk app on OS 7 was classy though it lacked a lot of features which would have been otherwise desired

Posted via CB10

Agreed. Gtalk on BB10 is much better than OS7, from my experience. It's gotten even better since Google rebranded it to Hangouts.

@dunaway - Posted with TMO Q10 via CB10

I'm happy to see an update to this app. I'm BBM all the way, but my son has an ipod touch, and when we tried to download BBM on it, it said it couldn't because it did not have a GPS. Which really sucks, because he was so excited to use BBM like his dad does. So we are sticking to Google Talk to chit chat when he's not with me. Other than that, I'm BBM all the way. If someone texts me, I reply with a link to download BBM. :)

I clicked the Remember password. That way it just activating the app and I'm signed in.
